Obligatory Episode 4 Trivia: In the manga, whenever a character dies, the author ends the chapter with a quick drawing of them ascending to heaven as angels no matter who they were. Shou Tucker is the sole exception; at the end of the chapter that became this episode, he was shown burning in hell.
og anime went harder\
That's a consolation that Nina and Alexander moved on to heaven while Shou went straight to hell!
Interesting side note; in manga/Japanese dub, it wasn't specified that it was "human souls", just "two souls"... which correlates so well with that drawing.
@@Hoenhime344 Cool story bro, haven't heard that one in LITERALLY EVERY REACTION TO THIS EPISODE
Yeah, when Scar said to grant these SOULS everlasting peace and salvation, he meant Nina and the dog

"WE ARE THE SAME! WE'RE THE SAME! YOU'RE JUST LIKE ME!" Lives rent free in my head. VA portrayed someone so sadistic.
this dude is super talented, he also plays saiki's dad in saiki k, and the fact that he can be so goofy in that while sounding like a psychopath in this was throwing me off for the whole episode
Android 17 and Emperor Pilaf killed it in that scene.
These two episodes go perfect together.
The first one shows how bad it is to blindly follow faith. The second one shows how bad it is to blindly follow science.
This is the worst understanding of episode 3 that one can have lol. But I understand the motivation for this interpretation and why it is so popular. The second description is coherent, although it deals more with the "lack of morality" and the "failure of authorities" (scientists, military and paternal) than with "blind faith in science".
The first episode has more to do with the denial of the gift and human self-sufficiency. Edward doesn't even care about the issue of "blind faith" (he says, "religion doesn't interest me"). He only sympathizes with Rosé because her motivation is similar to his.
@@martasilva8036 Fullmetal Alchesmist is all about not following anything blindly. That's one of the main themes of the whole show.
Spoilers I guess, but the brother's arc is literally about finding the middle path.
The two "first episodes" come hard on this theme (I call it first episodes, because 1 and 2 are filler and flashback).
Although episode 4 does have some elements of failure of authorities, is not the main point by far. Tucker's relantionship with his daughter is barely shown. Tucker doesn't do what he does for lack of supervision, or because an authority told him to do it. He did it because he could, because he saw the possibility (he quite literally says that). The whole point of this plot point is science going too far.
And Rosé abolutely shows the other side. It shows faith going too far. That's literally what Edward means by "you have your own legs".
It's not a coincidence that both episodes end with the opposite viewpoint being shown as "right".
Episode 3 ends with the temple in ruins and Edward talking about doing things yourself and not relying on God.
Episode 4 ends with God's mercy.
@@leonardocerqueiradias6168 Again, I repeat, the first episode is solely about self-sufficiency, blind faith is a mere artifice. As I told you, Edward himself said he didn't even care about it; he was surrounded by religious people who were being deceived and didn't say a word in their favor and he would certainly ignore Rosé's case too, if it weren't for the case that she had a motivation that mirrored his. Edward even proposes a deal with Cornello (lol), proposing that he give him the philosopher's stone and in exchange he won't explain the fraud. At the end of the episode, Edward just leaves without caring about the state of things, whether or not Cornello will continue deceiving people (Envy continues). In fact, Alphonse himself will ask for forgiveness for the way they handled it. So "blind faith" is actually a totally tangential topic.
Edward himself gives that lecture to Rosé before finding out whether Cornello used alchemy or not. In other words, he didn't even care if it was a question of "faith is going too far" (lol) or blind faith, but rather that religious faith is simply something that cannot be trusted - such a stance he does not have with the science.
Tucker, unlike Rosé and the inhabitants of Cornello, is not deluded and is aware of the results he will have. That's the point: Tucker is a moral monster!!! It has nothing to do with blind trust in science, Tucker knows very well what he is doing. His story is a negative allusion against the brothers' story, not against Liore's event: family breakdown, military corruption and success in the Faustian action. To interpret it otherwise is to pay attention to the lowest layers of the show, which are merely apparent.
@@martasilva8036 I disagree. And I know a lot of people agree with my interpretation, because there are multiple video essays about this topic. I don't have an interest in argueing with you to infinity. I'm good.
But... I question how good can your interpretation be when you got something COMPLETELY wrong. This - "Edward even proposes a deal with Cornello (lol), proposing that he give him the philosopher's stone and in exchange he won't explain the fraud - never happened.
Edward just pretends so Cornello will say outloud his schemes and he can broadcast it to the entire town. COMPLETELY negating your point btw.
@@leonardocerqueiradias6168 Yes, this interpretation of yours is very popular, but the average is often wrong. Most impressions don't even notice the summary subtext that exists in episode 3 for the general panorama of the series (even those who have some anime repertoire don't notice it), in addition to other basic errors motivated by poor translations from Japanese.
In fact, Edward's proposal to Cornello is not in the anime, but it is in the manga, further highlighting his intention there (obtaining the philosopher's stone) and highlighting his deviation (helping anyone), after all, Edward's selfishness is a pertinent topic at the beginning. In fact, unlike what happens in the anime, it is Edward who will demand Mustang's help for having helped Liore, further highlighting his selfishness.
However, in the anime we also see that Edward, initially, had no intentions of revealing Cornello's fraud, Alphonse even draws his attention because he prolonged the conversation with Rosé, but Ed initially intended to talk to him briefly (probably proposing an agreement, just like in the manga), but this only changes when he is attacked. The fraud is revealed only because it is necessary to combat Cornello, as this would prevent him from using the population against his brothers; If that weren't the case, they would probably just leave, after all, Rosé is the only one to be enlightened there (due to her insistence), the others are not even warned by the brothers and many of them even return to Leto's cult.
I love how these episodes both demonstrate the need for unity between faith and science.
A person of faith still needs logical application in their reason and thinking.
A person of science still needs something unscientifically pure to believe in.
Character: Kills someone in their first scene.
Rana: "oh, he cute, though." LOL
well, scar is cute)
Episode 4 is when I knew I would like Scar as a character. Ed would have held out too much hope that he could change Nina back and there's no knowing how much pain she would have gone through in order for them to even attempt it. You need that balance of child like hope and adult like understanding that giving up is sometimes the best option.
Except later Zampano and Jirso end up working with Al to try and get their original bodies back. So a method likely does exist, the difference is the life Nina would have to live until it was found would have been awful
@@TheJjcczz except we don't know if they did and they were not monster animals. Honestly I don't even think they have a right to complain they still look, sound and act like humans.
@@AttackRunRepeat That also applies to Ed, with automail he can live a perfectly normal life if he wants. That isn't the point.
The chimera's had their bodies and DNA fucked with in ways they don't want, it's completely reasonable that they may want to reverse those changes.
And besides, Greeds chimera friends had animal traits and urges even in their human forms, so it's reasonable to assume that Zampano and Jirso also have that issue.
These two episodes really show how Ed believes in Alchemy over humanity and compassion. Like sure, he has compassion and human values, but it is warped in his own ambition and his blind belief in Alchemy, as he states himself, he believes Alchemy will solve anything and is the response to every human problem, including death or suffering. That's why Scar is such a good counter-part to that, with Alchemy being basically the basis of all his suffering. In my mind, Scar and the Nina incident are what humble Ed the most (along with... spoilers).
@@TheJjcczz Their story isn't so much about whether or not they find a way to have their bodies back, but rather finding hope and purpose in your beliefs and values. It's like Rose, but in a less twisted way. Basically it's the point of the entire show tbh. It's also "normal" for someone who does not believe in Alchemy like Scar to believe that Alchemy or States Alchemists or the Government, could never save Nina. At this point, the story isn't about giving hope of fixing Nina, it's about taking away all the brothers' beliefs in Alchemy, dismantling them and making them question everything they've relied on so far.
And this is where you find out what this show is
You guys are misunderstanding alchemy a little bit. It's a science/magic of breaking down one object/substance and turning it into another, it's not quite so simple as having power over a certain element like earth or fire. While there are alchemists who study certain specialisms (like the water alchemist you saw in episode 1), they can still do things like turn a metal pole into a metal spear or take all the parts of a broken clock and 'rearrange' them to make a working clock. Which is why equivalent exchangeis such an important thing - all the parts of what you're making need to already be there, you just break them down and reform them into a new shape.
They are not the brightest, they will first figure that out by about episode 40 i think
🤣😂🤣
@@leguan278 Given how the anime hasn't really delved into it, I don't see a reason for this assessment besides "I have already watched the anime and have more knowledge".
@@leguan278 i want to defend them but i cant, this is result of what happens when you get a bunch of people with single digit IQ together.
Don't know why I've never "heard" it before but Shou's actor is also Hiei and Android 17.
Ed's line to Rose in the French manga version I read as a kid stuck with me. As she asks what to do, Ed just says "Get up and walk. At least, YOU still have both your legs."
The strength and the irony, I never forgot it...
Thats the correct line, its the same in the japanese version, its the english dub the one that changed a lot of lines,as always.
@@lexzeyfercronusbecause there’s a difference between adaptation and translation. Manga’s goal is typically about translation. Dubs are about adaptation, because pure translation would often lead to certain things not making sense, not fitting mouth flaps, or overall coming off stiff because while we can translate languages into other languages often times the nuances culturally or verbally can be lost in translation. So English dubs often have to change things in order for them to be satisfying. That’s not to say every change is perfect, after all adaptation is still subjective based on who’s doing it.
Fun fact: in the manga any time a character died the mangaka: Arakawa would draw a little picture of that character going into heaven no matter who they were, however shou tucker was the only character who the arakawa drew going to hell (for obvious reasons).
One of the few things I like better in the first FMA adaption vs. Brotherhood is that the early stuff got much more time there. The Tuckers' story was a two parter, for example.
I agree, the early story is better in the original, even though I prefer Brotherhood in every other way. But also, as someone who watched the original before Brotherhood came out, I kind of appreciate that I didn't have to spend too much time rewatching stories I had already seen.
I always recommend watching FMA and changing to Brotherhood at a specific episode. The beginning in the 1st adaptation has much more time to breathe and make us care about everything.
definately agree here. everything🎉 up through Ed's interaction with Scar in FMA was fleshed out better than in FMAB. I liked that it was not as apparent with Tucker's deeds in FMA and it made it all more horrific.
Let's use The Fire Alchemist Roy Mustang as an example for alchemists. As an alchemist what they can do is limited by there knowledge Roy's knowledge is focused on manipulating the gases in the air to gather them to a single point then using his Ignition gloves (that create sparks when he snaps his fingers) to ignite the gas and cause an explosion. So technically he's an Air Bender not a fire bender. But as an alchemist he can still do some basic alchemy thats common among all alchemists outside of his expertise. The same can be said about all alchemists they can all do some basic stuff outside there field of expertise.
Fun fact: the whole speech about what it is to be human (and 'ingredients' to human body) is one that often starts 101 philosophy courses in colleges, at least where I live, I was audibly excited, since I just watched couple of first series of original FMA, and then my professor starts with the ingredient list lol/
God, in the 03 series its the deaths in "night of the chimeras cry" and a future one that made me actually cry as a teenager. Still do, bravo to the mangaka
It's a terrible day for rain...
This will always be sad to watch... But I think the 2003 FMA is even heartbreaking that FMA Brotherhood. The Elric spend multiple episodes with Nina, so we get even more attached to her, and the way they found her after Scar kills her, this image of the bloody wall... It's horrible.
Yeah he exploded her ass it was pretty brutal and honestly for those first 15-20 episodes the original did a great job of adapting the material and with Brotherhood they assume most have already seen that series or read the manga and just skim those parts
@@DanielGonzalez-vo5niBrotherhood adapts at a normal rate of roughly a chapter and a half from the start to Hughes Death. The original adapted at a rate of roughly half a chapter per episode from the start to Hughes Death with most of it being complete filler. Brotherhood restructures some of the plot points that were unnecessary to achieve a better narrative flow
@@DanielGonzalez-vo5ni So I used to believe this as well for some reason, but it turns out memory is a fickle thing. Out of the first 20 episodes, 7 are either complete filler/Anime Canon (Meaning they help move the Anime's original story such as "The Other Elric Brothers", but they weren't in the Manga). The Anime becomes fully original after episode 28. (by that point 9 episode are Filler/Anime Canon).
And that's even being nice and excluding Episodes like the Alchemy Exam and Fullmetal vs Flame. The first of which is heavily extended in the anime and the second is a small short comic in the back of one of the manga volumes which is also heavily extended.
Brotherhood also skims a lot less than you may realize. It certainly still skims quite a bit. But the pacing of the Manga is just faster than 2003 to begin with.
2003 still has its merits and some of the parts it did take from the manga I do feel it did better (a lot are equal though), but it's really not as faithful in the early episodes as people remember.
@Max465 I know this is an unpopular opinion but I actually like the '03 version a little more. The story being more character focused with the slower pacing, the tone being darker overall both in the story and the art (I also prefer the way the characters look in '03), tbh I LOVE the anime original second half and the way the humunculi are born gives and even heavier weight to the sins of the alchemists... man I gotta watch it again!
The Nina event has been kind of spread a lot as a meme so if you're in the anime community I think it's good that you get to it and it ends quickly, that way the most shared meme about the series is gone p early on. Having to wait that many episodes for the people that have known indirectly is not very well paced nowadays. Sure it's not the series's fault, but I think this is ultimately better for that.
Welcome to the club, y'all. Episode 4 is the initiation.
It's fun to see the theorycrafting and guesswork. It'll be a long, wild ride and you won't be disappointed.
Rana doing her best Aussie “nauuurrrrrrr” 😅😂🤣
When I introduce friends to Fullmetal Alchemist, I tell them that they have to keep watching after the Tucker episode, even though they may want to stop. It’s the biggest hurdle in my opinion because of the sheer emotional weight they manage to place in a single episode.
At least if they quit after episode 4 they can say first hand that cartoons aren't just for kids
"Can we play now? Can we play now? Can we.. play now?"
Guys idk if anyone mentioned this but in manga author gives angel wings and halos to every diseased character in the end of chaps, nina and alexander(dog) included too.
However we see shou tucker falling in hell
Rana after episode 3: "I hope they don't get this dark in this show" famous last words
Ah yes Tucker the guy on everyone's top ten worst anime dad list
Such brilliant early 2 episodes back to back with great philosophy and adulthood way of life.
Name a anime character more hated than shou tucker
You can’t.
Mine from Rising of the Shield Hero and Rachel from Tower of God are definitely up there
@@nico-v113 oh, yes I totally forgot about her, she was the absolute worst, I’m still a bit salty she didn’t die.
yes Rachel, although I don’t hate her as much as mine and shou tucker she is on my most hated anime character list.
18:03 fun fact, this episode is actually the first story told in the manga so Cornelius quickly figuring out they committed the taboo was probably kept from the manga storyline.
I have a coworker named Ed who's also seen fma and sometimes I'll go "Ed..ward" in the ninander voice in the headset when I'm talking to him
Yall fear for Tucker was warranted
In the manga Cornello claims to have brought Rose's fiancée back to life and that he's not in the best shape so he must stay in a bed with a curtain in front of it but that turns out to be a chimera iirc
Brotherhood did a good job with this episode but I remember literally shedding tears for the 2003 version
I kinda hate that they made it so obvious in Brotherhood.
In the original FMA anime this episode hit you like a brick because up until the end they never really played Tucker as a bad guy.
Alchemy not magic lol but I’m pretty sure some 100 people already told you 😂 no hate , love all of you guys!!
As soon as RWBY got some real budget behind it, Rooster Teeth went in hard scooping up FMA actors to be in it;
Qrow - Edward
Oscar - Al
Amber - Lust
Winry - Willow
Jinn - Hawkeye
Watts - Armstrong
Klein - Scar
Mustang - One random Atlas officer at the end of Volume 3
And then you get a one-two punch of trauma. First with Rose and her desperation to return her fiance back to life, the demonstration of manipulation with power, and then Tucker - the infamous Ninalexander chimera - desperation with power. And in the end, a man with red eyes killing alchemists
Alright, alright, we did the kid stuff, introduced all the cooky characters with jokes and muscular posing. Now time for the dark stuff, the messed up stuff of this series
Episode 3 depicts extreme of religion
Episode 4 depicts extreme of science.
Also, now you'll get all the Shou Tucker Father's Day memes floating around the net each year.
Interesting to know you can only look into one of the great apes eyes
Genuinely surprised Rana didn't cry.
it's a good thing they had 3 people that didn't see this and also don't care, I don't think it's possible to care even a little and NOT take that scene like a full on punch the the face. no emotion? Really?
This trio kinda sucks
@@endless013to be fair, I think this aspect of the story was handled way better in the 2003 anime. It’s not nearly as obvious how messed up Tucker is, and we spend more time with him and Nina in the original anime. So it hits harder. Brotherhood lays it on thicker that Shou is sus.
Good choice pairing these two episodes together. Both show the extremities of beliefs. Religion and science may be polar opposites, but both risk zealotry and exploitation.
Now the show really begins
Yes the most kid episode from the most kid show ever
So, I know the original FMA gets a bad rap for some reason, but I REALLY preferred how it did Liorre and Shoe Tucker.
In the original, Liorre starts the show as a full mini arc and is what introduces Ed and Al. Rose's story... it is SO much darker in the original, and I'll leave it at thst. It really doubles down on the tragedy of wanting to do anything to bring back a loved one and makes you sit in it for several full episodes, which makes the eventual reveal of the Elric Brother's trauma hit extra hard and relatable.
Tucker is a two parter and is kept completely light until the pivotal reveal. There's basically no hints that something terrible is about to happen, no glint in the glasses or dark looks, just references to how important his certification coming up is. Especially with the overall darker tone in the original up to this point, Tucker's first episode is a welcome breath of fresh air that relieves the tension as you finally see the boys experience a loving home as they bond with Nina...
And then the second episode hits... and Tucker earns his rightful spot in hell.
This is generally true for most of the original vs Brotherhood; Brotherhood is more palatable because it keeps a generally lighter theme and moves at a more reasonable pace, but the original... hits you, hits you hard and doesnt let you go until you FEEL the lesson its instilling.
Me and whoever made that title need to have a chat 💀🤣
Ya'll should release 2 episodes a week. This a repeat reaction afterall.😭
I'm impressed they saw it coming, and were still shocked when it happened.
Welcome guys to the anime trauma club XD
I think the tattoo is oroborus
I find it a little sickening out Shou’s VA is also voiced by Stein from Soul Eater, which makes me uncomfortable but it is wild how they’re essentially the same person
Lol 'City of Hearsay' that's the first time I've heard heresy called that. 😆
Episodes 3 shows the extremes of religion brought low by a scientist
Episode 4 shows the extremes of science brought low by a religious man
Religious people in general just need to remember that its belief and not fact. Religious beliefs have given countless people and governments a free pass with atrocities
I know everyone has explained it to death, and by this point on Patreon you have hopefully figured it out.
But think of Alchemy like a science, everybody has some general knowledge from middle/high school, but then you go to college and major in specific fields.
You made a good observation.
Traitor as in traitor to the country, he’s never been part of the military
Even though I watched this first all I hear is obito uchiha 😂
The one big flaw of the dub is the mistranslation of Scar at the end.
He clarifies "Two human souls" whereas in the sub he only says "Two souls" heavily implying(supported by the manga) Nina & Alexander
Dear Lord rewatching this now, it's astounding how arrogant Ed was at the beginning of the show lol

Highly recommend watching the original 2003 version of this part of the story. It hits 10x harder (though to be fair it also spans more episodes, really building the relationship). Only if you want your entire life to be ruined by watching one of the most traumatizing moments in anime though :)
I have not yet watched the reaction, but when I saw that title I had to come here to say...
How dare you! Too soon!
There’s no fillers because this anime is technically a reboot of the 2003 version, whose story completely diverges from the manga. The manga was likely completed by the time this anime started.
It wasn't finished, but Arakawa wrote really detailed scripts for the manga, and so they were able to coordinate the anime and the final chapters of the manga really closely--the last chapter was released in June 2010 and the last episode of the anime was July 2010.
I take no pleasure in your despair, Normies.
I personally prefer the original anime's "Night of The Chimera Cry" episode, only because we spent a little more time with Nina, Shou, and Arthur. And Shou Tucker having a dark secret wasn't made obvious from the beginning in the '03 series. Don't get me wrong, I fully understand that the creators were well aware that most of their audience had either watched the 2003 series or read the manga and just wanted to get passed the first few chapters the first anime already covered so they could get to the stuff we hadn't seen yet.
I'm totally here for the DBZA action keep em coming plz!

Y’all did NOT do that in the title… yall wrong for that
I thought you already reacted to this series years back?
A different subset of the Normies did.
Xiao or Scar. Who did the worse thing?
I’d argue that’s the problem of Brotherhood. I prefer brotherhood over FMA 2003. BUT….the way the original anime handled certain things just cant be topped. Tucker is one of them. It’s too obvious in brotherhood he’s gonna be a suspicious person. But in 2003 there’s more time to develop things and his weirdness isn’t apparent nearly as early. To the point even the normies could call it out. If THEY called it out this early, that’s how I know 2003 did the Shou Tucker bit better
theres no trauma like nina trauma
