    I just tried this and it worked like magic. High heat black mat paint came
    Off in 5 minutes off my exhaust pipe.

    Man, awesome tip! I just used DOT 3 with some Scotch pads to strip off the temp paint. Worked great!

    This is a great idea! I'm about to start prepping new headers I bought for my truck for painting, and I never would have guessed to use brake fluid but it makes perfect sense - the stuff absolutely destroys paint and as long as you wash em good when its done the metal beneath the surface will just fine.

      Yeah, made the mistake of bleeding my brakes on my asphalt driveway without anything to catch a spill. It ate a damn hole in the driveway.
      I’m thinking of spraying them with some degreaser and the washing with dish soap before I start to paint them.

    I’ll try on my pacesetter headers tomorrow and let y’all know
    Edit: I actually put in a spray bottle, sprayed the headers came back 5 to 10mins it was coming off by itself lol I used a toothbrush on the first one but by the time I got to the second header you can literally just wipe it off, I used engine degreaser to clean off the dot 3 let dry for like half an hour to 40mins and sprayed them with high heat header paint that I got from autozone I coat it two times but whatever floats your boat, nice hack thank you.

    I just did this on some shorty hedman headers for my mustang... It worked! I had to brush the brake fluid a few times and ended up leaving it soaking for like an hour. It had a super thick coat of paint. So I had to really use some elbow grease. Wire brush and scouring sponge. Lol.

    After the brake kleen hit it with mapp torch to outgas the oils from the metal and burn off lint from the rags then blow off with clean dry air then wipe with bare hands to feel for junk left on the metal then paint.

    Didnt work for me. Bought some flowtech headers from summit and they were supposed to just habe the cheap temporary paint on them but im having so much trouble getting it off. Tried sand paper, paint thinner, paint stripper, torching it and now brake fluid. Nothing had worked but the torch and it uses a lot of gas. Im just going to throw them in the campfire tonight and paint them with VHT Hight temp header paint tomorrow.

    I just tried an industrial strength can of paint stripper and didn't do squat. Going to give this a shot tomorrow at the shop. Looks a hell of a lot easier than paint stripper plus stock alot of it at work

    It didn't work with my new Flo-tek headers. I was surprised it didn't even turn the cloth I used to apply the Dot-3 black at all, not even a black tint.

    • @josephplank1203

      Do you think maybe you got them pre-coated with high temp?

    • @SuperDave227D
      @SuperDave227D 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didn’t work on my Flow Tech headers either? They must use a different paint? Maybe harder? I didn’t order the high temp paint option, so I’m sure there’s no special paint on them. Heck, these were the cheapest outside frame rail Chevy/ Jeep headers on EBay, so you know they won’t waste money on a quality paint! Lol! I’m going to let them soak overnight, snd keep applying to see if it eventually breaks through. Don’t want to wire wheel them! That’s a PITA!!!

  • @shortattentionspangarage1312

    I appreciate the idea here, but this didn't work on my headers. I bought some "high temp painted" black headers off eBay for my Cobra build (302 SBF engine). Not only are they still smoking like mad after a couple hours of heat cycling, they now also look like crap! I tried aircraft stripper (didn't touch it), and this (also did nothing). They cost me $110, so they're going in the trash for some plated ones.

    • @josephplank1203
      @josephplank1203  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, this hack is for the protective coating that you're supposed to remove before you add the high temp coating.

  • @DAskew

    Will this remove rust from headers as well

    • @josephplank1203
      @josephplank1203  ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt it... As a matter of fact, if you don't clean off the brake fluid, I'd be it will accelerate rusting

    Don’t know what brand headers you are using, but this is not really working on my Hedman headers. Sitting here after 30 minutes and scraping the paint with a knife. It’s definitely softened up the paint, but I can wipe it off like you did in the video after 5 minutes

    • @josephplank1203
      @josephplank1203  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would normally agree with this but on a 2000 Ford F-150 with the 5.4 getting the headers on and off is no easy ordeal. So to put them on run it until the coating comes off and then take them back off again did not seem like a very good option to me.
