- Rumors and video games go hand-in-hand, and fighting games are no exception. From the 90s to today, gaming publications and just the developers on their own release information about a character that turns out to not real at all. Perhaps they become real in a later game in the series, but for the specific game they were said to be in, the rumors of their existence are greatly exaggerated, as in completely fabricated. So for this video, I’m looking at “fake” fighting game characters, whether they existed in the lore and were rumored to be playable, guests that were reported, but never came to be, or plain old made up characters that were still publicized.

Here is another example of an April Fools prank: the character of Tenn in Def Jam Fight for NY, who was supposedly the brother of the character of Nyne. It was revealed to be a joke, but really, I thought the character of Bo was supposed to be that character initially.

I loved seeing EGM's infamous Sonic and Tails leak on this list (But just a tip, it wasn't a duo character. If you look on the roster mach up, he's a seperate playable character) Still, I think Smash's best publicised rumour was Bowser in the original Smash Brothers because the source for that one was SHIGERU MIYAMOTO HIMSELF
I hope MK goes back to nice Ermac some day like they had in the PS2 games. He was friends with Kenshi. What's a better backstory than that!
Also, Juri would totally be the not-so-mysterious voice that would explain "that" thing and Gals Fighters looks like my type of game!
He's also Liu Kang's trusted ally in Deception. Liu Kang (his spirit form) is the one who guide Ermac after he has lost his purpose due to Shao Kahn no longer own him. He help Liu Kang free all the good guy from Onaga's evil spell.

I remember those Ermac rumors driving me crazy. Well actually, they drove my friend crazy who (in turn) drove *everyone* crazy by never shutting up about it. We actually had to forbid him from saying "Ermac"... I mean, you can only say "I don't know" so many times before nerves start snapping!

I remember that Sheng Long hoax. As a kid, I was confused about who Sheng Long was. I thought too he was a hidden character in SFII or something.

It was still a time when Internet wasn't as widespread. It took about a month for most Internet communities to confirm who all was in it and how to unlock them, but that didn't stop people from posting about Sonic after these hoaxes showed up.
Hoaxes in the early to mid 90's were on a whole different level. I remember using my tickets at an arcade to redeem for basically a doublesided printout of MK3 moves and secrets. Like 80% of the secrets were false, and even some of the fatalities were made up. I carry that childhood anger to this day, I could've gotten a rad rubber pencil or larger-than-average bounce ball.

When screenshots of Akuma were first revealed, many magazines actually reported him as Sheng Long.
BTW, I’m looking for info on the original Street Fighter Zero/Alpha. It was originally supposed to take place before the first Street Fighter, and had stuff like Sagat without his scar. I would love to know if any remnants of this version survived, but all I have is my memory of the EGM article that showed it.
Sheng Long was probably the first rumored character for a fighting game. In fact, he was probably the reason why there are so many fighting game character rumors out there in the first place

I've learned more viewers prefer a consistent upload date/time rather than certain videos being uploaded on themed days since not everyone sees the community tab or my Twitter where I post these updates, so I'll stick to the normal upload time when uploads are ready. Also, when I uploaded my last video on the actual holiday, apparently not everyone was notified. Maybe Halloween videos will still be up on Halloween itself, but I was fine with this being ready a few days early.

Just a little note; Harada was actually implemented into Tekken 7 as a cosmetic set for almost every character (Excluding certain DLCs) named 'The Bearded Man'.
Since it's only a cosmetic set he still uses the move set of whatever character you originally picked, but this is almost better than having Harada be a single character, it's like Harada is a part of every Tekken character.
So if you put it on Devil Kazuya or Devil Jin then you get Devil Harada?

Oh man the Sheng Long rumor. I so bought into that big time! In fact I was telling people about it all throughout Elementary and Junior High. Freshman year of High School the new friends I made told me it was a joke and I didn't believe it. Even when my friend beat Alpha and you saw Gouken I swore that was Sheng Long and Gouken were different people. Till they reminded me why Ryu's win quote in Street Fighter 2 on SNES changed and why they made Ken look more like him in Alpha. Ahhh young stupidity.

@@MrTopTenList might be the PAL version only. It had screenshots of a fighting Statue of Liberty and some dog on the box. Tried everything to unlock them as a kid, years later I found out they were cut and put back in a US rental only Sculper's Cut version.

You missed a plausible one. There was a April fool joke of being able to play Simon Belmontin in TMNT 2 "The arcade game." About Marcus Fenix, I seem to recall that Netherrealm leant into this rumour by saying they were working on him and then xbox decided they didn't want a guest character.

the EGM pranks are just "take screenshots of your best attempt at our challenge we wanna see high level gameplay" was the national/north american esports high score list. i will admit that i knew it was a prank but i would practice multiple attempts at it anyway. during the month of april i did believe the prank but i still wanted to try the challenge because the next month's issue would tell you the name of the highest ranked player who sent in screenshots of success and how many kills they got in the cruel melee.

I never realized how close we were to that in MK9 until I just read this. I'm fine with Reptile's more animalistic design, but they always need to a human skin costume since it's his most popular design. I'd totally be down for Chameleon (or Khameleon) to return, though!

I had a hunch that Sheng Long was going to be on the number one spot of this video when I saw the title. But then again, I assume pretty much everybody expected that. Didn't know about the Virtua Fighter April Fools prank though, so I was glad to learn about it. But still, I think characters from Sega franchises like Streets of Rage, Yakuza, Shenmue, Shinobi and Fighting Vipers would make great Guest Character fodder for the Virtua Fighter franchise. Or in the case of Fighting Vipers, have that kind of be it's own seperate thing that's still closely related to Virtua Fighter. Something similar to Fighting EX Layer's relationship with the Street Fighter franchise, so to speak. As in, Fighting Layer EX and Fighting Vipers would be the Art of Fighting to Street Fighter's and Virtua Fighter's Fatal Fury, so to speak. To take it one step further, I wouldn't mind if Capcom and Sega tried to make Capcom Fighting Evolution and Fighter's Megamix their equivalents to SNK's King of Fighters franchise. Rambling aside, here's a list of ideas for top ten lists in the future:

I kind of have a story with a "fake" character that's actually real, back in 2003 KOF 2002 was the game that i played the most in arcades and one of my long time friends told me that there was a secret Kyo like character hidden in the game, he told me a stupid ass complicated process to see it but at the end it didn't work, so i try it many times becaues i was a dumb young kid back then with no luck of seeing that Kyo look alike character so i gave up and tought that all of that was fake, until KOF 2003 released and for my surprise one of the sub-bosses was this Kyo look alike character named Kusanagi, so i went back to play KOF 2002 to try that process that my friend told me with no luck of seeing it... again, until years later i found a neogaf post with the various secret characters in that game and again for my surprise Kusanagi was actually a real playable character but with a different process to unlocking him... so yeah, many of us got fooled by a friend or even official magazines back in the day
I tried looking for an SNK fake character since I never heard one that truly turned out to be fake, so at least we can be happy that KOF ultimately never tried pulling a fast one on us like some of these other developers (to my knowledge)!

Sheng Long is Sho Ryu of Sho Ryu Ken in Chinese. 昇龍(券) Chinese Sheng/Japanese Sho means rising and Chinese Long/Japanese Ryu means dragon (Ken means punch). Rising Dragon Punch.

I know it isn't a fighting game, but there was once a rumour that you could unlock Akuma as a playable character in, of all things, Resident Evil 2. Had a joke article with fake screenshots and everything.
That sonic for melee got me fooled. I tried to unlock him for about a year, but cruel melee was just too hard, and I gave up. At the time, my house didn't have internet, most of my information came from the game informer magazines and G4TV.
Question: Why would they do this?For what reason?To bring more hype to the game?
