  • Colin Woodard is an American journalist. He is the author of American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America.
In this week’s conversation, Yascha Mounk and Colin Woodard discuss the ideals of America’s settlers and why they remain influential many years later; how the tension between individual freedom and concern for the public good has shaped America’s regional divides; and whether a shared national narrative can help to unify our divided groups.

The idea that an "authoritarian ethnostate" was ever a serious possibility or even wanted by more than a small minority of the country is completely ridiculous. The fact that was even invoked damages his credibility for me to some extent. Real bummer, seriously enjoyed it all until he went off the rails and started talking like the second coming of the Austrian painter is right around the corner.

Maybe not in 2016, but certainly if you look at his plans for 2024, he is way more extreme now.

@@kenlandon6130so you think he really will be "lliterally Hitler" this time? I don't care to find out but still very much doubt anything close to it.

@@chickenfishhybrid44 No he won't go full Hitler and massacre millions of people systematically, but he'll definitely try to eliminate any legal restraints on his power.

Check his credentials, academic history and think tank affiliations. He is very "mainstream" establishment.

@@chickenfishhybrid44 No. He's many things, but he's not going to order a genocide of Jews much less any other group. Or try to conquer an entire continent. That still doesn't negate my point that he will be more extreme in 2024 than in 2016. Not necessarily because he has become more extreme, which he has, but primarily because the MAGA right is planning ahead of time. Project 2025 is already putting together a MAGA "administration in a box" with a 900 page policy manual and their search for thousands of far-right political appointees not only for the typical political appointment jobs but also for many civil service roles that they plan to eliminate with Schedule F and replace with hacks who will have no willingness to disobey obviously illegal orders or policies.

Calvinists also believe that there is a predetermined elect that will go to heaven regardless of what they do and others that could be a Saint on earth but are not chosen for the kingdom of heaven.

1:09:08 Bruh, no way he just made the "They voted for Obama twice so they can't be racist," argument. Reminds me of Get Out.

@@kenlandon6130that's my point. Noone needed to try and smear her with "Neoliberal" which I think is something like he implied if i remember right
