It’s like iPhone vs Galaxy. You can do in depth comparisons of the hardware, but ultimately, if you prefer the Mac OS, get the Mac. If you prefer Windows, get the Surface. Neither of them are bad devices even if they do have their minor flaws. Your level of comfort with a given OS is going to make the biggest difference.

I have a Surface Laptop 2. Unless the keyboard flex has gotten worse on the newer model, I really don’t think it’s that bad unless you’re consciously looking for it. That being said, had a metal option been available for the SL2 I would have definitely gotten that model just because I prefer the look. I was originally concerned that the alcantara fabric would get gross over time but it’s been over 2 years and my black model still looks like new.

Finally an objective comparison between the 2 platforms/laptops. I personally expect the i386 to become much more powerful in the future since Apple made more of a competition to both Intel and AMD (Same like when AMD came up with Ryzen, Intel had to push a bit instead of the shitty quad core CPUs for a decade). We need to keep in mind that the mac environment is kind of closed/specialized compared to Windows and Linus so its easy to optimize the SW based on the underlying platform, i386 platform is way more generic.

A couple of things that are not entirely correct: drop in performance when unplugged it is not a "windows thing" but an "AMD thing". Windows gives you options to adjust performance when unplugged but AMD processors will slow down regardless of your settings.
As for the screen, surface do not have a generic touch screen and it's not meant to be used with your fingers (even if you can). When used with the pen it gives you a similar experience to what you get from writing on your iPad... If that makes sense on that form factor, it's another story.

Competition is always good for us customers. I hope the next Surface Laptop can come at an even more competitive price as the Macbook Air can be found for $899 USD from their education store and even on Amazon or BestBuy sometimes. Cause if we've come to the point where the base model of an Apple is cheaper than the windows competitor's base model, most general consumers would go for the one that's more affordable after tax and that's become the base model Macbook Air somehow.

I agree with a lot of the comments, it all depends on which operating system you prefer. For me, I just trust macOS over Windows; in terms of reliability and support. Granted, I have never had an issue with a Windows device, however, I have never owned one long enough to find out. Moreover, I use an iPhone as my work device and take a bunch of pictures having the ability to use Airdrop, iMessage, Facetime, and some apps from the App store far outweighs what I can do on an Apple machine compared to a Windows device.
I have tried the new Surface 4 laptop, and think that it's the most snappiest Surface Laptop. However at the end of the day for me, it is still a Windows machine and I have to find more workarounds with my workflows when using Windows. As I said, I agree with the previous comments mentioned, it all depends on the software you prefer.

The screen, keyboard, and trackpad are excellent. The webcam and audio are above average too. I thought I would hate the alcantara but it is actually warm and comfortable. My verdict - I definitely could live with the SL4 but almost everything on the MBA is just a bit better. If you are exclusive to Windows, the SL4 is a great choice for most users. One other thing. Personally as a developer yes. It let me connect to a Dock with just one cable. and the Docker is connected to two monitors, power, Keyboard, Ethernet , external drive. And SD card if I needed.
On the go, I usually don’t need any port.
So personally I would rather have a thunderbolt port than having all the ports on the machine. One cable solution is very enjoyable.

Which one wins on FOB? Frequency of Bugs - I made up an acronym specially for my experience with the Macbook Air M1 with 16GB RAM that I returned to the Apple Store yesterday. First-gen tech is always buggy. The keyboard on the Mac sporadically went bananas, e.g., populating the login password dialog without my even touching the keyboard, and moving at high speed through menus. Add miserably slow internet that I couldn't resolve by following the most recommended solutions. I really can't take time from work to be trotting back and forth to Apple and waiting for my main working computer to be fixed. I used the refund to buy a 2020 iPad Pro 11" instead, because iOS is solid, and iOS on new hardware ain't.

I think you 're so wrong to say like this. It should be if you're content creators then Macbook is the best but windows laptop like XPS is still quite the same. But if you're a business then Windows is a first choice.
There is a reason why 1.4b users (especially in business market) are using Windows which is about 87% of total market share of OS, and only 100 million users are MacOS (around 10% of market share). One of the reason is MacOS can ONLY be run smoothly in their own hardware because integration to multi-hardware is unable to Apple, since they want to sell everything but not sharing. On the other hand, Windows is able to do so so well, and that why Business/organization love itm since they can build their own hardware for security and replacement, and that why most of the market share belong to MS.
So in general, for 10 tasks, MacOS can only do well in 2 tasks (mostly for content creators), and the rest is Windows. Don't need to mention Office, because Office in Mac is terrible since its MS though. About 4 million apps are running well on x86, but only about 30,000 apps running on MacOS say it all.
So the right question is why people should switch from Windows to MacOS. It depends on what users want to use for.

Unfortunately, Windows is never honest in terms of battery life claims.
According to many reviewers, It can reach 11 to 12 hours for a real world usage, which is great, but is still much shorter than what they advertised. Apple's official data is more reliable here. 15 hrs for daily usage, or 18hrs for video playback, which match the tests done by tech reviewers.

I don't have any use for Windows, except when I have to use a Windows-specific application, and in real life, that is NEVER, I have no Windows-specific application that I am interested in. In any case, the MBA is almost like Linux in many aspects abd for my specific needs, so whatever else doesn't matter to me. Plus the power consumption and no noise is superior to any Windows beast. Yeah…I don’t think a touchscreen or price is going to persuade someone who likes macOS to get a surface laptop. Then again, I don’t think the M1 chip or battery life is going to persuade someone who hates macOS to get a MacBook. Lol. 90% of the decision is which OS you want then the rest of it is picking hardware. That said, windows 10 software features seem to have been abandoned. No real feature updates to mail, calendar, paint 3D, or any of the other native apps in years. Most of their native apps are janky and missing tons of features. macOS is first class with its software…as annoying as it can be to use.
