Bought one earlier this year off of Apple's refurb store back when "supply chain issues" were going to make good computers hard to get. It moved my upgrade date up a year or two but I'm glad to see it's going to stay relevant until the M4 or M5. And it will stay relevant even longer against Intel-based laptops.

The problem is that the Intel processors are not competitive. The Ryzen 7640u would have been better in every aspect, more CPU and GPU power and better energy efficiency. I have an i5 1235u Laptop for work and it's really not good, too slow and the fan is constantly running.

It’s not something I would use frequently, but as someone who regularly uses an iPad and iPhone, I find that I occasionally just instinctively reach for the screen on my MBA. There are times when a touch screen is simply faster/easier.

I’ve had the M1 MBA for a couple of years, it’s my first Mac and I enjoy it but am still getting used to MacOS. Work has always been Microsoft based and I didn’t feel ready to be without a Windows PC at home, so recently I picked up the Surface Laptop Go 2 on sale to replace an old Dell XPS 13. The difference between the SLG2 and SLG3 just wasn’t worth paying considerably more for the newer model.
Needless to say, the Mac is better all round but the SLG2 is perfectly adequate for office productivity purposes, and its touchscreen for scrolling and pinching to zoom is very welcome. Both laptops are great for portability and I think are a good combo for those who like having a foot in each camp without needing the latest and greatest device.

Great video - thanks! All the relevant data, and without extraneous blabla. I particularly liked how you let the speaker comparison speak entirely for itself.
I left the Windows world, for the most part 18 years ago. I still run it on a desktop for some tasks, but do whatever I can on Macos and Ios. Your video illustrates why in many ways even 18 years later. Better engineering, smoother experience. So shocking to hear the battery usage of the Surface while IDLE, compared to the Mac - which I would guess is down to Windows doing extraneous operations during idle time - and needing to run the fans (engineering shortcomings in heat dissipation and CPU consumption compared to the M1 Mac).
I'm pretty laid back about all this: use whatever works for you, but I would be remiss if I didn't share with you the event that made me leave Windows forever. I was doing an important tape backup of footage overnight, in the field. I woke up to discover that Windows had decided it wanted to update itself without asking my opinion, and had no qualms restarting the machine mid tape backup. Hours lost, but more importantly, trust irreparably lost. I realized in that moment that the gulf between my professional needs, and the way the Windows engineers conceived of their work, would possibly never be bridged.

Purchased a MacBook Air M1 refurbished unit in Oct 22 from Apple, 16Gb Ram, 2Tb SSD, 8 core in both. It’s been an awesome machine and I haven’t fired up my old 2015 MBP 15” since then. Vowed that nothing new would replace my MBP. Boy was I wrong. While I’m ok without a touch screen, I’d probably use it once in awhile. I do just after the new. MBP 16” black max but probably not enough to fork over that amount of coin for what I use a laptop for. I’d I did lots of media work then I could see it. But I also bought a refurbished M1 Mac Studio Ultra base model just Incase I started media creation. Total waste of cash from a use case but what a beast. It does a great job of converting my owned Blu-ray Discs to digital format. Files are huge so I may need to upgrade my NAS storage before too long. We’ll see. Speaker wise, if I’m watching a movie and the Air is on my chest, I get a3D kind of sound from the speakers. Where is that sound coming from? Oh it’s in the movie. Cool. Happy Thanksgiving all.

And I don’t like touch screen in laptops. This is due to the functionality of touch screen. I’ve use touch screen if I draw or edit on screen. But not in daily bases. And OS itself, I rather use Unix or Linux as my daily driver due to its functionality and ease. Windows vulnerability to virus, adware, malware, spyware. I’ve use computers since early 90’s so, I know the architectural design of both Windows, Unix (macOS) and Linux. I’m base in functionality not popularity.

The M1 has been in the hardware game much longer than the SLG3 so performance , battery life and "snappiness" M1 will always be in the way ahead of the game. Everything else these laptops are on equal footing, guess at the end of the day it all boils down to which industry you are in weather its personal device or corporate business and types of business application required to run on that specific device.

Okay, this was honestly wild to me.
When I saw this video in my feed, I expected this to be a completely unfair comparison.
In my mind, the Laptop Go series was supposed to be mid range laptops and The Air a sort of "entry high end" device.
And I thought the price point reflects that.
But the thing is, in Germany, the Surface starts at a whopping 900€. Sure the Macbook also starts at 1200€, but that's way closer than I expected.
That's not all folks. If you buy from a retailer, the Macbook can be bought for the same price or LESS than the Surface at just 800 - 900€.
I would never in a million years recommend this Surface for that price.
I'm not sure if I would recommend the Macbook either, but it's definitely a better deal than the Surface.

    So, in short:
    -Macbook Air pros: fully aluminium body, brighter display, greater pixel density, better camera and sound quality, supreme fully backlit magic keyboard, larger and better working trackpad, faster performance, better graphics, zero noise because fanless, applications load faster, twice longer battery life without sacrificing performace, cooler temperature even though it's a fanless machine;
-Microsoft Surface pros: touch screen, better gaming experience.
Well, unless you're a gamer or heavily invested in very specific Windows apps that have no version for or alternative in MacOS, why the hell would you ever want to buy a Surface? There's not much of a prize difference and it's obvious that you get A LOT more value for your money with the Macbook Air.
Personally, I've hated Windows for the last few years. It made my long distance education hell during covid. I can't count how many times I missed online classes, failed to join a test or submit a last minute assignement in time because I was forced into a 15-30 min long Windows update! Plus, those surprising crashes, restarts, damaged files and loss of info... It sucked! When you're a full time student, worker and a parent, you can't make your life revolve around planning updated and restarts. You want something that just works!
I tried a few different Linux distors but most programs I needed just weren't there. So when I finally tried macOS with Macbook Air M2 I felt like I was reborn. Everything worked out of the box, I had all the apps I needed, and it was fast, beautiful and plain perfect! I'm so, so sorry I didn't switch to Mac years ago...

Well, even if one has to use Windows apps - Parallels Desktop has one covered on an M1/M2/M3 Mac! Windows 11 on ARM runs astonishingly fast and smooth, and even old x86 and x64 programs work fast even on an M1 MacBook Air. It is just "if you're using 95% Windows apps", then a Mac is not for you (unless you have some really cool Mac apps, iPad and iPhone alongside your Mac). The Surface line is impressive, though (I've used a Surface Pro 7 Plus for some years, and it did a pretty decent job - but know I'm glad to be back on a Mac …).

I cannot get used to the touch screens on Windows computers. I've never felt like it was missing with my MacBook Pro, nor my iMac, and I have a Samsung Book2 Pro that has it, and I've never found a need to use it when I'm using the laptop in its normal desktop state. However, fold the keyboard back, and that's a different matter, but I wouldn't be doing that for normal productivity type apps. If I want to work like that, I'll use my iPad. It's using my finger, or a pen/pointer/pencil, on a vertical or near vertical surface that feels alien to me. That's not how I would write with a pen and paper. I'd have it flat, which is how I have my iPad when I use the pencil. I do agree that Windows laptops are becoming more attractive and seem to be well built these days, and I have a Samsung Book 2 Pro, but the MacBook is worlds ahead of it in design and the way the operating system and software work.

I made the move to MacBook this month after being a Windows user all my life, which included a Surface Pro 3, Surface Go (first gen), and Surface Pro 7. I can honestly say that Surface products are NOT value for money. Overpriced devices for poor quality, biggest example being the piece of cardboard they call a surface keyboard. What made me start to question my loyalty to Surface and Windows was during the pandemic becoming reliant on Teams and my shock at how my i5 8GB ram device could not manage being on a Teams call and simultaneously do something as simple as open an email. I would have thought the optimisation with their own software would have been a priority to Microsoft. With that said, there are two things I miss:
    1. being able to log in with just my face!
    2. touch screen. I see the comments that you've never needed a touchscreen on a laptop, but if you've gotten used to it for a decade across multiple surface devices, the intuitive little conveniences of being able to navigate with a touchscreen became second nature. But I also recognise that if Apple made MacBooks touch screen compatible it would just be completely unaffordable

In spite of the reviewer's best efforts to make it look like they are both good, the M1 Macbook Air is just better than the Microsoft Surface on every single point that can be compared. It's not even close. There are two points that cannot be compared: the Surface Go runs Windows, and it has a touchscreen. So if you really need, or want, one of these things, you have to go for inferior battery life, inferior performances, inferior screen, inferior touchpad, etc. And the Macbook is now 3 years old (released November 2020)! I don't even understand the point of this video. I was expecting better from the Surface Go. I thought: "One guy took the time to compare them, so there must be something there, right?" Actually, no. Let's hope that Qualcomm's new X Elite ARM chip will shake things up next year on the PC, because the x86 architecture looks hopeless to me, and Intel is looking really pathetic now.
