Should You Quit Learning Russian Language

  • This is something that I would advise myself if I were in doubt about learning a language. Hopefully it can be helpful to you too!
    Questions:
    1. What made you start learning?
    2. What makes you keep going?
    3. What are the benefits of learning Russian?
    4. Is the sacrifice worth the outcome?

Learning a new language is a never ending process. I've been learning english since I was 8 years old and now I'm 22 years old, and I never stop learning english. Same with Russian language, I will never quit.

Well for me it is like an obsession. I like the melody of the russian language. I also think that it is a very mysterious language. Every time I learn a new word or a new rule about russian I feel like I am one step closer to a very big secret that will be clear for me. I just need to learn it. :))

It’s great the some people think that you are a native English speaker! Motivation is key and as you pointed out trying to discover why you lost motivation (got discouraged) One concept is to find how to make learning fun each day so the reward is not just at “the end”

I started in 2018 as a hobby since discovering its beauty in music. Since then, I have had several durations of "giving up" and was intimidated o go back because all that I forgot. Well, I realized it's not always a linear process! and lately I have spent more time on Duo than anything because in the end it gives me happiness and fulfillment. With how rocky the world is lately, it helps me cope and keep my mind busy, and also not rot my brain watching TV shows relentlessly. I started writing russian this week and the only thing I regret is not starting sooner! Thank you for your videos, you helped me realized it's become more than just wanting to understand lyrics but possibly preparing for a future in Russia! :)

Good content as always. I'm studying Russian at University and I'm following this channel because offer more details than the books I have. At the beginning was very hard to memorise cases and in particular I'm still struggling with participles, but once you study the rules, increase your vocabulary and study the words with the respective cases it will be more easy to understand and do many exercises as you can. Thx again for your lessons :)

We never stop! Your videos are amazing! These are the best Russian learning videos on TH-cam, hands down! Thank you. I wake up and the first things I think of are what I’ve learned from these videos :) I started learning Russian because I heard a song while living in Turkey called Медина. Do you know it? I heard this song and listened to it probably a thousand times, then for that following week watched A TON of Russian learning videos. First I learned the Cyrillic alphabet then went on to your videos. Why am I learning? Honestly I’m the type of person that loves to experience other cultures. Hence why I’m here in Turkey. Russian has so many brilliant thinkers, philosophers, mathematicians and so on...Yes of course it’s worth it and despite the difficulty for me it has always been a delightful challenge and never depletes my motivation but rather adds to it. Very happy learning Russian, thank you for these videos. I love them so much. благодарю вас ❤️ TH-cam is amazing because you never know whose lives you touched. Keep going! You’re awesome 😚

I feel like the reasons I continue to learn Russian and the same as when I first started 1 year ago. I got a taste of traveling in Eastern Europe, met a Kazakh friend in the US, want to be able to have a deeper enjoyment of Russian culture, and want to be able to make Russian friends. These are still the payoffs I'm working towards.

Wonderful video, thanks! I stopped learning Russian about 16-17 yrs ago after I travelled to Russia three times. What little I learned was still useful for me in being able to get by, like reserving rooms in hotels, buying train tickets, ordering food, etc. I started to re-learn Russian 2 months ago when I decided that travelling around Eastern Europe (incl. Russia, Belarus and Ukraine) would be my priority in this new decade (despite COVID-19), including countries where it might be understood as a second language, at least for the older people. I went to Serbia last December - relearning the Cyrillic alphabet helped.

This was moving, and solidifying. My life, and the lives of people within my sphere will benefit through the effort in ways that can't even be predicted; much like how YOUR choice, Фёдор, to master English as indeed you have has had an altering influence within the cosmos of these many thousands of people pursuing this common goal.

My native language is Spanish, I came to the USA at the age of 24, now I am 60, and I have master English at a very high professional level; then I heard from experts that learning a new language helps to delay Alzheimer disease; so here I am. After two years, I now can read in Russian 60%, understand 30%, speak 15 %. All this studying on my own using Y-T videos here and there. I picked Russian for its uniqueness and interesting culture; not knowing the level of difficulty, but now, I love it! The concepts and philosophy about life, embedded into the language, are very fascinating to me. My goal is to master it as soon as possible. Thank you Fedor for the encouragement. Your lessons are great! Keep it up!

Watching this made me realize that learning Russian is one of the few things I wanted to do just for myself. And for that reason, I am going to continue learning. However, life is busy and I can’t study as hard as I was. At least for a while.

Hello Fedor! Great video. Of course, the answers are different for everyone. The benefits for me are still worth it. Although I can't devote as much time as I used to, I remind myself that there is no finish line. I have learned to be happy with giving it as much time as I can. Sometimes I get better fast, other times it has to wait. But I find that every new breakthrough ( "oh, that's how that works!") is enough to keep me going. It helps that I now have a HelloTalk friend who I just adore and can't wait to meet! Still one of the most interesting and rewarding things I've attempted to do. Keep up the good work!

The Russian language is difficult, however, I desire to learn Russian. I’ve set goals wanting to travel there as a missionary to develop shelters for homeless children and make a way for those that want to come to the United States. Although there will be interpreters, one should possess the ability to speak with the people they’re reaching out to help. I want to be able to speak with the children in their language.

YOU QUIT FRENCH ? I started to learn russian in february this year, couple hours a day, like 2/3, i already know words like жабры, колодец, тяговооруженность, известняк, сланец ... My goal was “mastering” russian за год, and i guess i got some great work done. I’m a native french speaker, I speak fluently in English, I moved to canada and now I’m learning Russian, I read and listen as much as I can, my GF actually is Russian and she learns French so... Really good motivation, good luck to everyone for learning this language (russian), i know sometimes its fun, and sometimes its less ...

Hi Fedor! This video really resonated with me. I have been teaching myself Russian for
several years on and off now (on and off because, as I have no one to converse
with, I get soo get frustrated and upset when I feel I am stagnating that I lose
hope and give up which results in me forgetting everything I have learned when
I come back to try to pick it up at a later date!) So, I cannot seem to
progress my vocab, speaking, listening or writing skills. I know that I am so
nervous about my pronunciation and have no confidence in speaking Russian as I
have no one to practice with and no real structure to how I am trying to learn
it. I want to travel Russia for my 30th birthday in October 2020 so I really really want to try hard to improve now that I have a goal and motivation to work towards, as I will be travelling to Russia alone and need to
be able to navigate the country and all that entails being a geeky tourist. Can
your course help me ? In reality, I need a Russian husband so I have someone to constantly practice with ;) !
I feel I learn best in a structured learning environment
but even so, when watching your videos I have a terrible memory and struggle to
remember new words, which again leaves me feeling that my journey to becoming
fluent in Russian is hopeless. I would like a teacher and I enjoy your style of
teaching so I am considering the 129.99 option but just would like some advice
on how you may be able to help me after this 30 day course finishes?
    Many thanks

I'm learning Russian for 2 months now and I truly love this language, how it can be elegant and rich. I learned to appreciate every nuances of it, even though I'm still a very beginner, but I've done so much progress in these 2 months that I'm even more motivated to continue. I've always been fascinated by this huge and strange country, so different from mine, and after I met a Russian boy I decided to start learning the language.
I'm Italian, I realised that there are so many similarities between Russian and Italian, and this makes me enthusiastic and always curious.
I speak English fluently and I've learned French when I was a little girl, I'm very aware that Russian is a hard language but I'm not afraid from it. I think learning a language can change your life in better, even if minimally.

What actually is so discouraging is my own grasp of English. I’m a native English speaker and every time I chat with friends, every time I watch comedy or listen to all the slangs, idioms and word contractions in English, I keep thinking there’s no way I would have been able to learn all this if I hadn’t grown up here and made friends here and gone to school from beginning to end here. What are my chances of learning Russian and becoming proficient in the same way without the same opportunity? I have a life here, I certainly can’t move to Russia to immerse myself. I’m limited to internet resources and probably a couple of lessons with a tutor weekly. Am I wasting my time??? There’s also the added discouragement that for practical reasons, I really don’t need to learn any other languages. English, for better or worse is the lingua-franca of most of the world. Why torture myself? But I try to keep myself motivated by celebrating the little wins. By continuing on a little every day, I know just a little more than the day before. And maybe I’ll never become fluent, but at least I’m learning something new. But yeah it’s frustrating and hard.

Interesting video. Especially for me as i don't have a great answer to most of the questions; I started because i had always wanted too since i was maybe 16 or 17, but its very hard in Australia as there are few russians. You can't do it at school, you can't do it at most universities and doing it at a language school can be hard to fit in with your schedule. I decided to start because i met a great girl who is my co worker and is russian. I realised hey now i have a chance to speak to a native to help me learn so decided during quarentine to go and do duolingo. Not satisfied with that course i then found youtube and started doing a combination of youtube, duolingo and speaking with my co worker.
What benefits will i get? Probably not that much to be honest outside of the satisfaction of being able to speak a langauge that very few people in my country can speak. If i get good at it, i might apply to transfer to my companies Moscow office for a year or two to make use of it and have a bit of an adventure. But reality is outside of that i am just doing it for myself. Oh and also to impress the girl, lets be real, impressing the girl is a part of it for sure. But she has a boyfriend already so i am realistic about my chances there. Great video, thank you.
Also would add, don't feel bad for qutting french, i learned french for like 10 years at school, went to france, everyone speaks english, hardly worth it at all. At least with Russian it makes a bit more sense because russians speak a lot less english than french/german/italian/spanish people, so you actually get to use it. When i tried to speak french everyone just told me 'i speak english'.....

Русский мой второй язык, Я говорю по-русски и по-английски, Я изучал за 4 месяцев, но я только А2, Я очень хорошо говорю по-русски для 13 лет. Я буду быть fluent!
(I am VERY surprised I pulled off making this paragraph, with me only not knowing 1 singular word.)

This video has been very honest and soul searching for me. I've put 2 hours everyday for the last 6 months . I tried with a teacher and still could not find any happiness in learning Russian. I felt very little improvement for the hours of hard work. Always miserable and unmotivated so from this video I have decided to quit! Hand on my heart I tried my best and it wasn't enough...😪

I'm going to post here my personal history.
1: It started back in 2014, I guess, when the Ukraine's revolution happened. I was watching western media and russian media. But a lot of information was in russian so, it was a block. Also, I work in cybersecurity and there's plenty of information in russian websites which I cannot read. This is my motivation. But when the motivation started I just tried to know the letters and pronunciation. Then, I stopped. 6 years later, here I am. Why? I work with an Ukrainian person (two actually but not as often). So far, I made a lot of progress but still, I need at least 1000 hours to be able to at least express myself without hard issues.
2: My goals are to write and read proper russian. I don't need to speak it well. I just need to have the skills to understand what people are saying on the news, on dark stuff forums and so on. Of course, I want also to look cool by speaking with my coworker in russian and my friends are like "wtf! spies! :D" joking ofc.
3: I will be able to understand more stuff and also kill fake news when people misleading translations. And look cool. 😎
4: Well, apart of point 3, it trains my brain in different way.
I don't know how I learned English. To be honest I was bad at it, back in school, but when I started to play games online with team play, I made a really really high jump on knowing ok (at least reading was ok) to pretty much fluent. I speak English like in my native tongue (almost). Sometimes I think in English, sometimes in Portuguese, it really depends. I'm too much exposed to this language (I work on a company that there are a lot of people around the world, so English is critical).
Another language I was studying, in school, was French. It's easy compared to Russian. And to be honest. I would "profit" more by knowing French than Russian. Anyway, I lost it because I didn't practice much and I hate it. :)

Well, I didn't have any specific goals for learning Russian, and still don't have any, except that it can make me communicate with many peoples from the post USSR countries.
Talking about the difficulty, actually, Russian is not extremely difficult, it is nearly at the same difficulty of French, and I can speak French fluently as a second language, where my native language is Arabic.

I've started to learn Russian in the view of travelling on the Trans-siberian train and being able to communicate with people. Started about 1 year ago with a Russian lady giving me a tuition 1 hour a week (I know it's not a lot) here in France. I arrived at a point where I realized I had learnt a lot grammatically and also the vocabulary. Maybe too much. It became all confused. So I stopped the lessons 4 months ago and I don't know if I'll return to it. I love the language and Iwould be very proud to speak a little of Russian. I don't know if I'll be courageous enough to learn more or if Ishould only focus to the vocabulary knowing I'll never be fluent (I'm 57 yo and learning at this age is more difficult than when younger).
    Any idea? Thanks

My problem is that I love the language but it's not very useful to me, at the moment the goal of my life is to move to Japan so now I'm focusing on learning Japanese because that would be actually useful for me. I still like Russian and I want to learn it someday but I think you're right, I'll focus on the more important things for now.

I started learning Russian 2 years ago. The purpose behind it was to communicate with a friend in Ukraine. I struggled... allot. I had a willingness to learn because I seen the circumstances of how people live in Ukraine and Russia. 2 years fast forward I can walk into a Russian grocery store and have small talk with the locals. Russians understand me, they say you can speak but mistakes. The more you study this language the less difficult it becomes. Most people are shocked because I'm a black guy and the first question they ask is "pochemu tbl hatchu govorit russuki yazik :) "

    Hello Fedor,
I want some help. I'm planning to learn Russian language by watching movies having Russian subtitles. So while I'm trying to do it what all things should I keep in my head so as to make the most out of it? @Not Bugarev I don't have any personal Russian language teacher to teach me. I'm just into self tutoring, so I just teach myself Russian by watching videos on TH-cam and listening to songs. I'm also trying to learn Russian by watching movies. So that's why I asked

@@arunimasaha4171 Try doing an online course like duolingo (free), it's not perfect but it gives some structure to the learning and helps explain things. Movie translations wont help you understand the language, just remember what words translate too from one language to another. This doesn't teach you how to form sentences and so on.

I almost quit after learning Russian isn't as widely used in ex-Soviet countries as I thought (now only ppl older than like 40 speak Russian in those countries).
I was planning on learning Russian to use it in Eastern European countries that don't use a lot of English.
I ended up recognizing that my initial goals with Russian are also to read literature like Dostoevsky in native Russian, better understanding Russian perspective of international relations, and to work with Russian researchers. Now I continue working steadfastly in learning Russian)

And Russia has a literary and poetic rich culture. And because I am Portuguese, I want my kids to learn Russian as a second language, because English is everywhere, and French, Italian and Spanish are easy for us.

I have a humble suggestion, perhaps it is good, perhaps not, but maybe it is a good idea to try and immerse oneself in the language as much as possible, even if not living in a Russian speaking country. For example you could watch Russian TV series, movies etc, watch Russian TH-cam videos.

I learn Russian just for fun, especially because of an upcoming vacation, and I don't take it too serious. Another benefit is that I can mess with my Ukraine coworkers :-D
Growing up in East Germany, I had Russian for eight years in school, and despite being in my forties now, I still remember quite a lot, so it's not a big deal. E.g. it's nice if you already know the alphabet, or if things "sound" correct, even if I don't know the exact rules anymore.
