    A few more thoughts on this S4 - I haven't spent a lot of time in the B9 generation, but drove a lot of B8 S4s in their manual and 7-speed S tronic iterations. This newer S4 feels more like an S6 to me; it's an ultra refined, comfortable, fast sport sedan. It was really planted, but it lacked the sharpness and fun-to-drive character of the previous generation. It's an interesting trade-off especially when you compare it to the TLS Type S and BMW M340i, both of which are a lot of fun to drive. It's fine, because it's probably what Audi customers want - just interesting to see the shift in focus.

      Even my mom went for the 330i over the A4 since the Audi wasn't sporty enough for her. As you said, it was extremely comfortable and nice, but sporty it was not.

      Did your tester come equipped with the S Sport Package, with the sport differential? The reason I ask - with that option, understeer should be very minimal, with the exception taking it on a race track and really pushing it into a corner.

    I've driven Audi S4s since the early 2000s, when they had 2.7TT V6, V8, S/C V6 and now back to turbos. S4 has always been very nose heavy and fast in a straight line. If you think this one is like nose heavy and understeers drive the V8 and older versions before they had the sport diff, lol. They are great all weather fast autobahn/daily cars. Type S sounds like a more neutral setup and handling focused, I think I'm liking both.

    I love the way Audis take off a stop - with massive torqueiness, but still gentle. And the broad torque range makes cruising and passing so relaxing and fun. My tuned 2018 A4 , had the best throttle sensitivity I can wish for. I have since tried everything to tune my BMW 330i, but it doesn't quite come close to the Audis smootheness and response, so I will hopefully be able to buy an S4 soon.

    • @DMCarReviews
      @DMCarReviews 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Audi's have a noticeable delay off the line and only start moving after a noticeable pause if you floor the gas pedal. I recently compared the new 330i and A4, and the throttle sensitivity is far more aggressive and sporty in the BMW (especially in Sport).

    • @zadeh79
      @zadeh79 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DMCarReviews Untuned I thought the A4 and 330i were very close. I prefer the 330i suspension . However, my tuned A4 was unquestionably quicker. Tuned 330i's tend to do 60 in about 5 seconds flat, on a very good launch - even with a custom tune, while a basic Unitronic/APR off-the-shelf tune will guarantee 4.6 s , 0-60 in the AUdi A4, all day long, (and you can easily stage 2, for 4.2 s 0-60 times in the Audi).... .4 seconds may not seem like a lot, but when you combine that with better low end response (thanks to the lower compression E888 engine), the Audi feels much much quicker in daily and spirited driving. Virtually no car (even pricier cars) have the smooth and rushed power like a tuned A4, except electric cars. The dual-clutch helps transfer between gears seamlessly and 9.7 : 1 compression gives you safe power at 2K RPM - at 95 MPH. In contrast, the higher powerband, in the 330i also does not match well with the 330i 8hp51 transmission.

    • @DMCarReviews
      @DMCarReviews 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ You can watch my 330i review. I did 5.0s 0-60 by Dragy in stock form. A tune should get you to low 4s with ease! The 330i has excellent low end and the gearbox is a beast. It's a way more fun to drive car, in my opinion.

      @Ryan Gromoll, There are factors that moderate the significance of manufacturer price point though. Most luxury German autos are leased...few eat the elephant in one bite. And BMW offers extended service coverage, further sweetening the deal. Savvy consumers negotiate-down a purchase price and then either shop their financing, or buy outright. High quality, reliable vehicles (e.g., top tier Asian machines) can factor heavily in buying decisions where total cost of ownership is considered and where one keeps a car for the long haul. It’s untrue then that the differential in the manufactures’ prices between two cars is always preeminent. Comparing the TLX-S vs. BMW 340i is a case where the long term cost of ownership is more heavily in Acura’s favor than first meets the eye...a Honda costs substantially less to operate & service than a Beemer. That aside, the visceral appeal is that a 340i sprints 1/2 sec. quicker than the Acura, and odds are good the Acura handles & corners significantly better than the Beemer.

    You didn't have the transmission in sport :( - My thoughts as an S4 owner. I just bought mine, fully optioned, sport resonator exhaust, everything. I love everything about this car. I had an M240i before this drove my dads TLX. Let me tell you, this car is built nicer inside and out, has better technology, more comfortable than both, lacks a bit of character that the M240i (I know, its a VERY different car) had, but that was all fixed by having it tuned by the Audi dealer I bought the car from (Come on, how COOL is that?), it brought back out MOST of that character. The headlights, taillights, B&O sound system, all of that is better than its competitors. I drove an m340i, loved it, but ultimately chose this because of the far nicer interior.
    I respect your opinion, and your review was great as always, but I think the S4, (Albeit, optioned out and with a tune) is on a different level than the Acura and the M340i. Don't get me wrong, the m340i is great, but Acura build quality is definitely a little cheap (I mean, it looks stunning, I'll be the first to admit) compared to the germans. The TLX is just an acura/honda, kind of like how a genesis is just a Hyundai. The Audi brand has "prestige" that the other brands just don't have.

    transversely mounted engine in Audi is FWD biased. You obviously are biased to the TLX type S. the only thing better in the TLX is the double wishbone fnt suspension. The Audi engine and drive train (8 speed Tiptronic, which is a ZF trans) is better, it weighs about 400 pounds less, has a true and tried AWD system that is designed to take a beating. I had SH-AWD that exploded the rear diff while rear wheels were spinning at about 40mph trying to get out of snow when the wheel hit dry street, which led to the rear diff being totally destroyed. Audi tests Quattro to be at full power in full slip and slam right onto dry pavement without anything breaking. Of course, this is all being looked at from the fact that the TLX is $55k to start, which is pretty expensive for a fat pig.

      @@mutualdecline2174 I can understand that. And I agree with you, another journalist should put the Type S through their performance testing, we still don’t have an official 0-60 nor a 1/4 mile time which is ridiculous considering the car is going on sale next month, typical Acura crappy marketing.

    The Audi is blanding out now sort of like washing out of the line. The TLX handles superbly and gives you that edge confidence driving at much higher speeds that just stick you to the pavement. It has the ability to keep you planted well into the turns and sharp. The TLX with a few mods is already in range of eclipsing the M3 and M4 competizione with out the XWD that you need to be faster in the M3. To me that smells like a winner not to mention price and looks plus Reliability to go with it something that AUDI and BMW do not still understand or comprehend RELIABILITY. The only crown they had was performance but it looks like the Accords and the TLX are going to take away that crown too. So Yeah BMW you go down the line in terms of value.

    might be ages old but the tech is still years ahead of the Acura. Just look at the reverse cam at 10:20, it is way better than even the advanced TLX 360 cam, and the Type S doesn't even get the 360 cam in USA. Digital dash, hud option, proper shifter no stupid push buttons, touch screen. Acura can learn a lot from the Audi still and I say that as a Acura fan

    Type-S weighs a ton more. And 10 year old acuras look 20 years old. Tried and true Audi quality in a daily driver = goodness.

    this is the b9.5 generation and honestly ive been living with a 2019 b9 s4 prestige for the last 6 months and prefer it way more than the b9.5 not a fan of the new wheel or exterior styling

    idk i drive a zf8speed and that just seems like such a delay at this point in time. zf shifts right as the paddle is getting relesaed. Thats like a .5 second delay at least after he releases the paddle. and thats a base 430i
