This car sucks, you will be paying thousands on maintenance and repairs for this car after the warranty expires. Looks and performance is fine, but quality and reliability is pure junk.
I would take the Golf R over this, but not because of the manual, but because of the hatch. When I was looking to upgrade my old Mk7 Golf R, I tested an S3. The drive was great, but the tiny trunk space and back seat were deal breakers.
With the back seats up, the Audi trunk is actually larger than the Golf R I think. I had a MK7 Golf R and now have a 8V RS3. Can actually fit quite a bit in the trunk of the Audi. Can fit my kid's travel stroller with no problem. Back seat I think is the same? I have the same child seat installed in my RS3 that I had with my Golf R, no problems fitting in back seat.
If it had the torque vectoring I would say yes. For that reason, more power in golf r and lower weight I would say golf r is better. Plus you can get golf r in the states with a manual.
Wait, no comment on lane centering? That's what stood out from tsp reviews. Please don't forget to rate that feature. It's the only thing I'm interested in

Was debating between this and the Golf R as I was looking to upgrade from a MK 7.5 GTI, went with the S3 because even though the R is more powerful (not by much, but still) and has more sporty options like the torque vectoring and all that, the interior didn’t hold up for the price they are going for. But the real deal breaker was the climate controls. If I’m gonna daily a car I don’t want to have to screw around with menus to change the temperature or fan speed, I just want a few physical buttons, is that really so much to ask?
The golf R interior makes it a non starter. I would probably literally buy one if it wasn't for that. As it is even though this is a downgraded interior in some sense from my A4 I still want one.
@@MySonicDragonI have had the golf r for a month now. Unless you live with it can’t comment about the interior. It’s super easy to learn and works awesome. I’m 50 too and the tech is so much fun once u take about 5 minutes of your life to learn it. Awesome daily. Hatch is great. Always have something need to toss in. S3 trunk was a hard no for me. No heated steering wheel at 58k. A joke. No vented seats. A joke. Less horsepower. Inferior awd system. List goes on.
Can’t believe Canada is not allowing the 2022 RS3 to be sold here because of new regulations, good thing I took great care of my TTRS. I guess my TT is stock with me for another 4 years or so😁.
I'd only get the this over the R because of the physical buttons. I don't know why Audi won't sell the Hatch S3 in America that's the best of both worlds!
@@nextleveljourney6612 My wife has a Golf. I'd prefer the RS3 in hatch. Driving a A6 now and want a smaller car, but still want the ability to haul stuff. The RS3 sedan is so tiny that that trunk is pointless.
One thing I don’t understand is the packaging on this Audi. The golf R has heated and ventilated seats and heated rear seats. The Audi which is supposedly VW’s luxury brand is not available. Only heated front seats. And also no heated steering wheel in the Audi vs the Golf R. If I am paying 15k more, these features should be on the S3
I dont understand the new shifter at all. On the old one you can pull it back in D to go into S mode instantly. I cant imagine doing that with that little thing lol.
I looked at the vw golf r before this, I'm looking for something with similar specs at maybe a more affordable price. Also putting maintenance and fuel cost in consideration too
I've been debating between an S3 (or RS3) vice the Golf R. I really want a manual, but so much of the comfort and usability of the R is getting really bad feedback. My answer for now is to keep my tuned (just over 300 hp) A4 that has a manual and quattro. Saving a bunch of money too
I had a 2017 S3 and it was a terrific car. At that time, the S3 was quicker than the Golf R. Not sure why a VW is quicker than and Audi for 2022. RS3 will solve that problem. I might take the S3 over the R just for the interior. The 10k delta might be worth it. VW offers more for the money including heated steering wheel and cooled seats.
Sure it may have been quicker than a manual Golf R but DSG vs DSG the Golf R for Mk7 and Mk7.5 is quicker than the 8V/8V.5 S3. This is because both cars had exact same drivetrain and power figures year to year as well as the fact that the Golf R is actually lighter.
@@slow8r Golf R was lighter by like 10kg, definitely not a difference, if anything I always saw the S3's getting slightly better 1/4 mile and 0-60 times.
Great review guys. I love my 2020 S3 despite the back seat lack of room, and I'd take it over a Golf R any day but that's me. You mentioned the upshift problem a couple of times and previous models, like the 2020, allow you to engage "manual" mode by moving the shifter horizontally, where it will not shift up unless you do it yourself with the paddles or the shifter. Does this 2022 model not have this feature, or did I miss it in the review?
was thinking the same thing. no way Audi would take that away, it defeats the purpose of having paddle shifts. on all Audis with paddle shifters i’m pretty sure it’s the same. If it’s in auto mode, you’re only downshifting to get the extra grunt to overtake and stuff. of course it’ll automatically shift up gear if you’re still in auto-mode.
1.43 million subs, doesn't know how the share button works? C'mon Yuri! 😃 Gotta go S3 though. But I'm creeping up on the middle-aged crowd at this point and I like a little extra room. The Golf R would have been the easy choice for me 10 years ago.
Not enough new or better with this car to make me upgrade from my 8V S3, and quite a few things got a little worse. Other than the engine and diff, the drawbacks displayed here are going to also dampen my enthusiasm for the RS3.
One small comment and one bigger one.: You mentioned the strange circular "button" on the console for adjusting the stereo volume. I would note that there is also a nice "rotary wheel" on the steering wheel that adjusts the volume as well. I pretty much ignore the console button and use wheel on the steering wheel. The bigger comment is that I went shopping for a 2024 VW Golf R at years end to replace my 2016 VW Golf R (6-speed manual). I tried several VW dealers in both Northern and Southern California and they were all asking a $15,000 premium for the Golf R over MSRP. One dealer even had a "leftover" 2023 VW Golf R and was asking $15,000 over list for that one as well. Meanwhile, I decided to test drive the Audi S3 at the Audi dealership which was 2 blocks away from the VW dealer with both the 2024 and 2023 model VW Golf R at $15,000 over list. I had test driven a 2016 Audi S3 prior to buying the 2016 Golf R and just liked driving the Golf R more. BUT, the Audi dealer had a fairly loaded 2023 Audi S3 Premium Plus and was willing to talk a deal. I was very impressed after the test drive (much nicer interior and had the adaptive suspension, moonroof, and killer Bang and Olufsen stereo that were not available when I bought the 2016 Golf R. AND, the piped-in exhaust sound was, in my opinion, much better than my Golf R synthetic sound. Bottom line, I got the Audi S3 for $8500 below MSRP which looked much better than paying $62,000 for a Golf R (about a $10,000 savings in the instance). Yes, I no longer have the 6-speed manual, but this sucker is plenty fast and fun to drive, more fun than I remember of the S3 from my 2016 test drive.
I had a previous gen S3 (2016) and it was so underrated. Could keep up with 5.0 mustangs and C6 Vette's. Such a sleeper car and I can imagine the new S3 is even better. Audi reliability wasn't great though, which was the reason I sold it. You guys and Savagegeese are my two favorite car TH-camrs out...keep up the great work!
I would take a S3 hatch over the Golf R, mostly because in my country the S3 is actually cheaper than Golf R by like 5k. However, if i really was looking to buy one, i would get a used MK7.5 Golf R, better interior and cheaper.
Agreed. And if they were worried that would put it too close to the RS3 power levels, then they could easily bump the RS3 numbers up without any real effort. I just can't see their logic here.
OK. So Quattro and 4Motion aren't always just interchangeable terms. Audi customizes each Quattro system to each specific vehicle. And, as the S3 has transversely mounted engine, it uses a Haldex (Borg/Warner) system, as does the Golf 8 R, which comes with a limited slip front diff. 2022 S3 uses Borg/Warner Haldex system with up to 85% to rear, FWD biased, reactionary, All Haldex systems uses transversely mounted engines, center diff. is not required, has open diff. at front and rear, with Haldex system in rear diff., turns on-off on-demand, standard is 90-10 F-R and able to switch to 50-50 max to rear, thus is FWD biased and reactionary; Haldex is lighter than Torsen; Haldex is NOT full-time AWD; Torsen has engine moved forward, reducing handling; new Haldex (2022) can split up to 85% (possibly) to rear and has front LSD. To upgrade to active torque vectoring full-time AWD Quattro requires buying in at the higher price bracket vehicles that use Torsen systems.
"with up to 85% to rear" I'd like to see where you get that from. I've continuously heard that even the newest Haldex technology can only send at most 50% to the wheel. And the whole trick is that it can send 100% of that 50% to one particular rear wheel. But I've never heard of it sending 85% to the rear.
@@DarthChewie yes. The 2022 S3 no longer uses Haldex, and can distribute 85% to rear. Transverse mounted does not get true Quattro, in my opinion. Haldex works great for most people. To get what I'm talking about one needs to go Audi and higher price bracket. I'm not referring to the MK8R in that regard.
@@chobocops It did. Well, it's a Magna system. It's still only 50-50, but at rear can use up to 100% to either axle or anywhere in between. To get the Torsen system, true Quattro, you need to go Audi high trim levels.
I owned the previous gen one and sold it due to the handling dynamics. It was a great little car but you just couldn’t hoon it really. I hope someday they find a way to make Haldex something that can tear up the corners. Don’t think it’s there yet.
You can get aftermarket haldex controllers for the previous gen that can customize the split and make the power distribution however you want (within the physical limitations of course)
Good review, thanks guys! I'd take the Golf R over the S3. I like the looks of both cars. I like how sleek the S3 looks, but the Golf R gives you the manual option and the utility of a hatchback. I doubt the infotainment design and haptic feedback buttons in the VWs will be an issue once a driver gets used to them.
This is a difficult sell to me when the R exists. Maybe the buyers of the two are different. I know I'd consider both but go for the R. The R is underrated, power wise. Why is auto upshift such a complaint. It's downshifting that matters more when driving hard. I suppose it's that one instance when the driver wants to bang off the rev-limiter instead of shifting up then down again?? Makes no sense
@@RandyAugustus So would you just bang it off the limiter mid corner? Bear with me here. By _mid corner_ won't I be accelerating out of the turn? If it downshifts mid corner then I'm slowing and doing something wrong. A DSG shifts so fast that it won't upset the car. Am I wrong? Downshifts definitely help braking and balance etc. The computer knows shift points way better than drivers. Ahh! Autocross! It would be shit in autocross. In this case it would kill times because when the driver expects to slow the car, it suddenly upshifts.

@@bobdell2851 Aha agreed but this new interior is very promising! I don’t mind the exterior at all either I find it quite nice actually lol but a lot of people seem to disagree
@@bobdell2851 yeah i test drove an rs3 a few months ago and tbh i thought my gti interior was better. i couldn’t stand the circular air vents and the overall vibe
@@aj.1505 months ? In Canada here they said probably won't hit dealers til 2023 or later. Got myself a new 2020 and honestly love the 8v look with the proper shifter more. The only thing I prefer from the new one is the new infotainment system.
Such a beautiful design. Wish the 2023 RS3 came to Canada
The engine and 7-speed dual clutch are great in the Golf R, and it's great in this S3 :)
You guys deserve the subs and the likes, great reviews.
How much were you able to go under msrp? Here in Illinois I am able to go 10% under msrp.
Love you guys and your reviews, but the word is "anyway". "Anyways" is not a word!! 😀
I know Audi is part of the VW group but certain angles reminds me so much of a current Jetta.
I've had mine for a few months. It truly checks all the boxes when it comes to a fun daily driver!
3:45 Holy overhang.
Those GI Joe clips are great. Brings me right back to my high school days.
This new Audi A3 is the car that I want to own
I can only recommend it as a satisfied A3 hatchback (European) owner since August.
Always so much fun watching your videos! Keep up the great work!
Can’t believe Canada is not allowing the 2022 RS3 to be sold here because of new regulations, good thing I took great care of my TTRS. I guess my TT is stock with me for another 4 years or so😁.
I m literally debating on wat my next is going to be and this vidoe just makes it possible for me to make the best decision
I'd only get the this over the R because of the physical buttons. I don't know why Audi won't sell the Hatch S3 in America that's the best of both worlds!
Rs3 hatch ftw
If rs3 hatch was in America I’d have sacrificed everything in my life for one already.
Skoda RS 2.0TSI DCT 245hp for 40.000$ here in Europe. Currently the best value.
Dear Audi,
We want the hatch in the states.
Best regards,
NA Audi people that don't like sedans
Don’t forget we want a manual transmission to go with that hatch.
Answer: that’s simply the Golf R - Audi is the luxury version of VW
That's why I've also gone with VW. Get a lot more for the money in this price category.
Valid point!
I dont understand the new shifter at all. On the old one you can pull it back in D to go into S mode instantly. I cant imagine doing that with that little thing lol.
That S3 is such a perfect car. It’s the most amazing mix of performance and utility. Not affordable, but it would make for a dope commuter.
I looked at the vw golf r before this, I'm looking for something with similar specs at maybe a more affordable price. Also putting maintenance and fuel cost in consideration too
Love the old GI Joe! Great reference!!
They really tried so hard to make it sound like an inline 5
I've been debating between an S3 (or RS3) vice the Golf R. I really want a manual, but so much of the comfort and usability of the R is getting really bad feedback. My answer for now is to keep my tuned (just over 300 hp) A4 that has a manual and quattro.
Saving a bunch of money too
U have a audi a4
I had a 2017 S3 and it was a terrific car.
If u can afford it def the s3
Sure it may have been quicker than a manual Golf R but DSG vs DSG the Golf R for Mk7 and Mk7.5 is quicker than the 8V/8V.5 S3. This is because both cars had exact same drivetrain and power figures year to year as well as the fact that the Golf R is actually lighter.
@@slow8r Golf R was lighter by like 10kg, definitely not a difference, if anything I always saw the S3's getting slightly better 1/4 mile and 0-60 times.
9:30 the gas tank is on the same side as the hose on the gas station icon. you don't need to pull up the range to see that
Great review guys.
Yeah they missed this, likely also didn't know the easy way to shift from D to S mode for transmission
Love Audi. Love VW. But I would 100% still get a golf r over this. I just love hatchbacks too much.
In Europe you can get this as a hatchback.
@@fernandovazquezcueto9606 that's sick.

RS3 or TTRS please. That’s all I need. That sweet in-line 5cyl is just glorious
1.43 million subs, doesn't know how the share button works? C'mon Yuri! 😃
Gotta go S3 though. But I'm creeping up on the middle-aged crowd at this point and I like a little extra room. The Golf R would have been the easy choice for me 10 years ago.
Great video guys, thanks!
Not enough new or better with this car to make me upgrade from my 8V S3, and quite a few things got a little worse. Other than the engine and diff, the drawbacks displayed here are going to also dampen my enthusiasm for the RS3.
Not if you're in Canada. The RS3 isn't coming here.
the interior just makes this 100x better than the golf, fuck capacitive touch buttons
This is a significantly better looking vehicle than the golf, so it has that going for it. Audi doesn't miss on styling
Great review guys
Previous version looked so much better.
the review i was looking for !!
Nice video and as always nice audi

The S3 should be making more power not less than the Golf R. Weird decision to make
Agreed. And if they were worried that would put it too close to the RS3 power levels, then they could easily bump the RS3 numbers up without any real effort. I just can't see their logic here.
Outside of the 1% enthusiasts, most are not cross shopping the 2
Great video keep up the good reviews
2022 S3 uses Borg/Warner Haldex system with up to 85% to rear, FWD biased, reactionary,
All Haldex systems uses transversely mounted engines, center diff. is not required, has open diff. at front and rear, with Haldex system in rear diff., turns on-off on-demand, standard is 90-10 F-R and able to switch to 50-50 max to rear, thus is FWD biased and reactionary; Haldex is lighter than Torsen; Haldex is NOT full-time AWD; Torsen has engine moved forward, reducing handling; new Haldex (2022) can split up to 85% (possibly) to rear and has front LSD.
To upgrade to active torque vectoring full-time AWD Quattro requires buying in at the higher price bracket vehicles that use Torsen systems.
"with up to 85% to rear"
I'd like to see where you get that from. I've continuously heard that even the newest Haldex technology can only send at most 50% to the wheel. And the whole trick is that it can send 100% of that 50% to one particular rear wheel. But I've never heard of it sending 85% to the rear.
Wait i thought the mk8 golf r ditched the haldex for a new system
MK8 R has a rear diff, not front. And Haldex is max 50% rear, not 85%. 85% is on the full-time Quattro systems.
Great vid

LETS GOOOO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!
I owned the previous gen one and sold it due to the handling dynamics. It was a great little car but you just couldn’t hoon it really. I hope someday they find a way to make Haldex something that can tear up the corners. Don’t think it’s there yet.
The new Golf R dumps the Haldex :)
@@keithgatzke5390 it's still haldex loll just a new rear diff
@@victorchen8484 correct. It’s still haldex just an improved one.

S3 over the Golf. Based on looks and interior. The manual option doesn't bother me that much because of how quick the newer transmissions shift
Manual elitist jerks will have a lot of fun with you lol

Good review, thanks guys! I'd take the Golf R over the S3. I like the looks of both cars. I like how sleek the S3 looks, but the Golf R gives you the manual option and the utility of a hatchback.
You don’t want to shift mid-corner;up or down.
