  • Welcome to another episode of The Eight Nine Garage. My Yaris with the 1.5L had squeaky belt syndrome. In this episode, I do an upgrade to the 1.8L Belt tensioner. This required some modifications. If you choose to do this, modify at your own risk! It worked well for me.

That's fantastic to hear! I've been really happy with my modification. That belt squeal is very annoying. Thank you for the feedback, and watching!

Thanks for making a detailed video on this! Just got the bracket and I can’t wait to try it out.

Great idea with the method of tensioning. I got the feeling that there's a big variance in terms of belt quality on the Yaris P9 series. Bought my Yaris XP9 (1.4l Diesel) with round about 100.000km in 2015 and never had any issues with squeaking. Then, 2020 and about 60.000km (~37.300 miles) later my alternator failed and got exchanged for a new one (OEM) together with the belt (the belt was more than done at this point). Since then I get squeaking every 2-3 months and I am already on a other belt. To me it seems like the belts are hit and miss. Tensioning with a bar freaks me out every time so thanks for the advice :)

Thank you!! I agree on the belt quality. They don't last long at all. I actually didn't know there was a diesel version available. That's really cool... I wouldn't mind owning one. I bet you get great economy with it. I appreciate your comments!

@@89G Fueleconomy is great but diesel prices in Germany since Corona and Ukraine aren't XD
Mine was built in early 2007 (pre Facelift) with the "semi" automatic transmission and I got down to 4.4l/100km with AC on and in city traffic (according to Google that's 53,5 mpg)

@@best591 mine gets in the 34-36 mpg range. Yours does pretty dang good!! Diesel here is right around 5.20 USD per gallon. I'd have to do that math on that....

@@89G Well, the Diesel version is also only 90hp but as I said damn efficient. Other cars are more fun to drive at the "Autobahn" but as a daily driver it's perfect for me (it still manages around 120mph so it's even kind of fine for that). Especially because there is not much electronics in it and you can fix the most stuff by yourself.
I did the math (hopefully correct): 5.20 USD per gallon equals 1.37$/l (USD and Euro are at the moment 1:1 so that's pretty easy). That's more expensive than I thought but still way cheaper than here.
Diesel here is around 2€/l so around 7.57 / gallon. Quite comical if I remember 3 years ago it was around 0,95€/l ( 3.60$ / gallon)
Btw: I love it when creators interact with their community so props to you :)

Oil Pressure sensor. I broke one trying to tighten a belt.

I don't understand why Toyota failed to put an automatic belt tensioner on this engine, it is a pain in the a$$ having to adjust it every time, when I don't, the belt squeals when I start the car and the a/c doesn't cool at idle, unless I put it in neutral.

I know! It has a serpentine belt (albeit tiny), but it should've had an auto tensioner for sure.
