At the age of two, Lily Nichols tore the pink Easter bow out of her hair and, using the few words she knew, repeatedly told her mum Vanessa to, 'Take off’. From that moment on Vanessa, and then husband Dustin, from Venice, Florida realised their daughter was going to be different to other girls her age. But, far from simply going through a tomboy phase, Lily has already talked about becoming a boy when she is older: changing her name and having surgery. Despite this, Vanessa says she is in no rush to put labels on her now seven-year-old daughter and hasn’t even introduced Lily to the word transgender.

There's a big difference between a tomboy and a transgender boy. A tomboy is a person who enjoys looking masculine, is sporty and rejects feminine, girly things. A transgender boy feels as if he is stuck in a girl's body. In other words, tomboys are masculine girls (they are happy being girls, they just don't conform to traditional gender norms) and transgender boys are boys who were born in the wrong body.

@@gaminggomez3282 Mind your own business and conduct your life the way you want, whether or not it ends up being a horrible thing is up to them. I have a friend who is transgender from a young age and they are infinitely happier as who they are and are grateful they went through the struggle to become who they want to be. So not every situation is the same, and not everyone and their dog needs to give their opinion on what is and isn't right in scenarios outside of their own life.

Calm tf down. The kid isn't taking any hormones just now, no permanent things are happening, the mother specifically says that she isn't acting on it. They might grow out of it and become a stereotypical girl, they might just be a tomboy but they might be trans. As a transgender male myself I can surely say that being allowed to choose the toys and clothes that I wanted as a kid saved me a lot of pain, I came to the conclusion that I was trans when I was 12 and have stuck with it ever since but I always knew that I was different even from the tomboys. I know trans people, more often girls, that were forced to play with toys as kids that traditionally fit with their gender assigned at birth and it really hurt them. Children need freedom to be able to find out who they are and the sooner they do that the better, remember that nothing is permanent and that things can always be changed or fixed. This mother is doing her kid a favour by letting them pave their own way in the world.

I used to be very much of a tomboy at this girl’s age, I wore long shorts, cut my hair short, my room was blue and I loved superheroes and I hung out with boys. However, as I got older I started realizing that I actually did like feminine things, and just because I occasionally do something deemed “boyish” such as playing video games, that I’m still a woman at heart. Girls can like “boyish” things and boys can like “girlish” things.

The thing that bothers me is that people associate liking shorts, t shirt, video games, trucks, cars, short hair etc with the gender of boys'(same thing with make up, dresses, doll, long hair...for girls). The gender is defined in the DNA, but liking those things is not genetic, it doesn't define what gender we are. The only thing that is something that mean you want to be a men or a women is if you want a penis or noobs and a vagina.
There is not a link between what you like and the gender: this is just our society that classifies stuff for diff genders.

      @misskamibee7827 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Xuagram2405, I understand you're point of having a certain gender is only in your DNA, but that's what they want to change. So by having boys and girls thinking that boys and girls have certain things that make up a gender, (ex: boys having, like you said, trucks, video games, and cars. And girls having, like you said, dolls, and dresses) then they will do whatever it takes and use those opposite things to become the opposite gender. It is all really a matter of what the child feels themselves. And also, why would you say "you want to be a man or a woman if you want a penis, or boobs, and a vagina"? For A CHILD? This child is 6 or 7 years old. So why would she want to change herself just to have a penis? The story can be different for an adult, but for a young child, it's not about changing your part because you want to have it specifically, but because you already feel like a girl, or you already feel like a boy. (blows raspberry)

Let them do whatever they want. As long as they're happy, it shouldn't matter. If you're trans or are going through something similar, you'll go through WAY LESS TROUBLES being who you want to be, than you would if you choose to repress. In the words of Miles McKenna, "I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not."

MagicMovie MADNESS...... Oh my word. No, do not let them do whatever they want. That message says, well... I will let my kid do meth, because I let them do what they want. That is not a good message you're getting out with ''let them do whatever they want'' When I was a kid, I was a huge tomboy, and that is exactly what this child is too, a tomboy. They may always like guy things more, but that doesn't mean they need to change their body parts to become a boy. She's a kid. I still think men's clothes are more comfy than women's clothes, it's because they are more comfy, and I still sometimes dress like a tomboy, I still like sports, but I'm a girl. My mom, tried to put me in girly clothes and I never liked it either. But if my mom, had said just let her do whatever she wants, there is no telling where that could have lead me. Just because you're a tomboy, doesn't mean you have to change your sex. P.S. That quote is by Kat Graham, not Miles Mckenna.

I kinda agree to an extent, cause I feel that there's a definite chance the kid could grow up and realize 'oh I'm just a tomboy, but I'm still a girl' . Then again, I was exactly like that and I am trans so you never know. I understand the hesitation to do anything on the mothers part because I got bullied a lot growing up for looking and acting like a boy, and when I wore boxers or talking about how I thought the idea of a sex change was cool it just got worse and pushed me into denying myself and an extremely uncomfortable puberty and early adolescence

I would act like a boy, talk like a boy, play with boy toys, I remember even asking my brother if "I can be the boy and you be the girl"....got a little older, turns out I'm just a tomboy. You speak about this like you're certain...you're not. You don't know it all. It is possible she's just a tomboy but at a young age, you can't differentiate between the two

  • @aubrie9844
    @aubrie9844 6 ปีที่แล้ว +93

After reading some of the comments I figured I’d give my take on it. I’ve always been a tomboy from the earliest of ages, so when people say it’s being confused between that and transgender, it’s understandable and somewhat agreeable at this stage and age of the child. Does that mean as she gets older it couldn’t be that? No. But I agree that right now it’s more or less a waiting game in a sense. As I said I’ve been a tomboy since I was 2 or 3, and I just turned 20 this month. Growing up it was aware to my parents that I also gravitated to the boys side, was more into “boy” activities, and just would shy away from anything remotely girly. Where I’m at now, I’ve hit the stump of being confused about myself in this way, but I’m not jumping to conclusions on labeling myself transgender/transsexual until I know for sure. I’ve taken up the term androgynous for myself. Im not changing my pronouns, name or anything with this title. I claimed it because it describes me perfectly, and also mentions the fact that it causes confusion with gender roles. With being a tomboy growing up and now over the last two years I’ve expanded myself to try and be feminine and dress up and feel pretty, but I also still wear my masculine outfits as well, so it’s the best of both worlds. So, in regards to the people saying labeling right now or confusing the two terms as you say, I again can agree to a point, but at the same time it’s an opinion, as is mine in saying this. I don’t see this mother pushing her child to transition or anything. She’s allowing her to be herself, and as she grows up things will fall into place the way it should when the time is right. Wether it’s her being like me, maybe not being a tomboy anymore and just go all out girly, or if she’s trans, whichever happens, happens, and the happiness and well being of that child and being who she is meant to be is most important. So yes, don’t label them as anything at a young age but also don’t make them cover up the way they want to be presented. This mother also seems great with how she handled it and about the explanations she’s given so far to her daughter. She’s not forcing it on her or making her make these huge decisions that would potentially be set in stone. She’s explained that if when she’s older and she feels that is who she really is, there is things available to help her transition safely, fully in a sense, and supportive services. I also understand how people might jump to the conclusion that this is it and if one little display of being the opposite gender they see in their kid, they automatically assume and label. It’s good to acknowledge that this is something that could potentially lead to more later in life, but then just allow the kid to be themselves and cruise along and enjoy watching them grow up. The world is constantly changing, and this has become more apparent, yes and that’s a good thing. Letting people be themselves and allow them to live the way they want is their decision and if it’s not something you support, move along. At the end of the day, whether we’re different skin colors, body sizes and shapes, styles, gender, whatever, people are people and we bleed the same color, we’re the same color underneath our skin. We’re humans, and accepting people more than belittling them would benefit us all. Less bullying in schools, less possible mass shootings, less suicides from people after being broken so much over the years. It’d help everyone. I know it will never fully stop, but if we could lower all those percentages things would seem and be brighter. Ultimately I’m happy this kid is being allowed to be herself and having a mother who supports her either way. Don’t let someone tell you who you need to be, be who you are meant to be. Hopefully in time things will pan out to where the world is just more peaceful about this.

The baggy shorts, the shirts with dragons on them, short spiky hair etc. Loved playing tackle football and remote control cars. There was even a time when I was 14 that ideas convinced I was trans.. something about all that changed when I turned 18. I got a serious boyfriend and didn't mind wearing womanly clothes and making myself "sexy and pretty", it felt good to do those things. My whole point is, I felt certain at a young age I wanted to be a boy, but now I'm certain I'm glad I'm a woman. So be careful at that young of an age.

exactly. Society always teach girls to be feminine and delicate but a girl can like boy's toys or shows and vice versa. She needs to wait until she gets older and if she really has body dysphoria then transitioning will be a good choice.

Nobody gives hormones to little kids.... No one. That's barbaric. And puberty blockers aren't permanent. It's like $50 to change the kids name and you can do that as many times as you'd like, so they won't be stuck with a boy name if they don't want it.
Nothing that's happening here is going to largely affect her life* so Idk why people always gotta pipe up with a judgmental tone about "what if's" that would never happen in a million years in a civil society.

Back in my day I had Pokémon cards like Lily this was 2002-06 I used to play Outside on the stairs after school and have Pokémon battles with my two friends Bryan’ and Mark. People called me “Tom boy” I liked a girl (5th grade) but couldn’t tell because it was “dirty and dyke” this would be so up beyond high school, college, work, moving out. Waiting for my “woman feeling” to happen and waiting for the phase to end of tomboy after all for a 22 years old? I’m still confused?? After many suicide attempts and self harm ?? After makeup and straight sex , after being loved and hurting the person that loves me most, after grief, after homelessness and hopelessness. Before they thought I’d grow and flourish into this woman because I was a beautiful girl kid and “didn’t know what I want.” But I always did I’m not a Tom boy, I’m not a confused woman, not a butch lesbian , not mentally ill, not satans spawn. These labels are all the bad and rude things people have to say about facing the truth of self identity. My family is disgusted of what my physical body could be, they may disown me forever. But I love them more each day. May god continue to grant us peace and comfort.

I was thinking the same thing throughout. If transgender was never a category, that's what she'd be. A tomboy. The story seemed to focus most on what made her transgender was her choice of clothing & toys & hobbies. Our society has built the boundaries of gender specific clothing & toys. This doesn't (to me) make her, or any kid transgender. I think its still too early to call.

"What if". A what if question will sometimes not have an answer because most likely it won't happen. I don't imagine or see this smart child wanting to change back, but the only thing I can put the mother on the spot for is telling the child about surgeries or gender switches before the child's want to be a boy gets strong enough to the point it hurts the child, only to really test them.

In light of all the negative comments here (which, sadly, weren't unprecedented), I want to say what a wonderful mother Lily has! She just lets Lily be who she is and that is beautiful!
That being said, I think the title of the video is kind of wrong; no one knows for sure whether Lily is transgender (or in any way non-conforming) or not - they literally say so in the video. She could well be just a tomboy. But for Lily it's comforting to know that should she actually be transgender, she would have an accepting mother.

    • @notdeadyet6769
      @notdeadyet6769 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

if you're talking about what I think you are, then that isn't what happened at all. The kid got a botched circumcision and instead of the doctor going "well now you have a boy with a fucked up penis" the doctor went "welp, time to raise you child as a girl" Obviously this didn't work as the child later identified with their birth sex and went back to it later committing suicide. Also tomboy was still used when I was a child and that was past when transgender became a word, its just the media that has inflated it.

When I talk to Them now, they tell me that boy toys where fun :-) and girl clothes meant they could not be messy.Parents never talked about well do you want to be a boy or a girl..That conversation was not entertained or even a thought of.

i love how accepting the mom is, there's no need to label a child just having a different childhood, if lily wants to dress like that then let it be, if lily starts wanting to be more feminine when puberty hits don't be "told you she was just confused" because all of this is just a process of figuring out who you are and how you truly want to live your life. all that matters is that a parent supports their child no matter what they're going through and that the child is happy being themselves!

this is a very delicate situation here. i am a parent and would never want to hurt my child psychological by blocking his or her natural instincts ir telling her that her natural instincts mean that there is something wrong with him or her. i do believe that we associate too many things with gender like dolls=girls and truck = boy. i did not like bows and ribbons as a child i felt as though they were restrictive. and even though i played with dolls i loved trucks even more. i did nit want to become a boy and i believe that it may be because my parents never made me feel as though liking trucks was just for boys or that not wanting ribbons ment that i was not girly enough

I'm an adult now and am proud to identify as a butch lesbian and more importantly proud to be a woman being able to express herself regardless of what society expects me to look like.

as this child grows older they will really start to learn who they are. if they are transgender then there are roads that can be taken and if that isn't the case then they had such a freeing childhood to just be a tomboy. I'm transgender and I knew that something was off from the age of 4. If my mother had been this accepting and tolerant then I would have gone through less pain than I did growing up. just let your kids be kids for as long as they can and they will figure the rest out on their own.

Telling your young tomboy daughter about genital reassignment surgery and being transgender, then writing a blog about how it affects her is not parenting.
Maybe she is trans, maybe she will someday transition to a dude, but her childhood deserves better memories than sharing profoundly personal doubts on camera and having them documented online like she is something to be studied. She should be permitted, as a child growing up, to figure out how the world looks through her eyes, not by having the eyes of the world drawn upon her during an already difficult time.

I was pretty "girly" up until I was like 9 but then I went through this tomboy faze for like a year or 2. I kind of wish I didn't go through that faze though because tbh I was really weird when I went though that faze. I wore my brother's old clothes and it was NOT fashionable at all. I also decided to cut my hair short (not like a bob cut or anything but shorter) and I went to SuperCuts and for some reason they gave me these ugly bangs when I didn't ask for them. Also I wore a suit on picture day. A suit. It was ugly and I regretted it as soon as I came to school. I'm not saying that being a tomboy is bad, it's just that when I went through that faze it was terrible. Now I'm not a tomboy, though I'm not super girly either, and my hair grew out long again.

There's a big difference between being trans and just being a tomboy. I am trans and I have a lot of girl friends that are tomboys. They like dressing in boy clothes exclusively, buying "boy toys" and things like that and there is still a concrete difference between them and I. I think with a girl child that acts more masculine or a boy child that acts more feminine, you shouldn't bring up the topic of transgender until they're much older and have gone through puberty at least. Dysphoria starts to become more present after that and you can bring your child to a gender therapist to see if that is what is going on. In this day and age everyone jumps to the conclusion that if a girl acts more masculine or a boy acts more feminine they are trans, which is usually not the case. I don't think anything's wrong with how this mother is raising her child, I just don't think they should have brought up the topic of being transgender or srs until they were older.

Vanessa was one of my closest friends in middle school. Her son now goes by Dylan, is either already or beginning transition, and is a remarkable young man. Vanessa is an OUTSTANDING mother and Dylan is a product of her parenting. It's not just being a tomboy: A kid knows they aren't in the right body, and the mother discovers it's way more than playing boys' games or clothes, because, if they're like Vanessa, they're attentive and unconditional with her love. She's a wonderful human being and Dylan is a great kid.

I think the main problem with parents not accepting they're transgender children is that they are simply not educated and they don't understand fully what transgender means so I'm taking any parent that you feel you may have a transgendered child to educate yourself talk to other parents were going through the same thing the main issue is that you need to love your child except her or him for who he or she may be the pronouns are very important please listen to your child doing what they are telling you

I stick with her, because my parents make fun of me that I'm a tom boy. And I don't like it and I just want to stand up to them and say " Hey why does it matter that I love boy stuff, I could be what ever I want and make my own decisions of what I love!! " And I'm just so scared to say that and they say your ugly like that. Your descousting. That just hurts my heart, but no matter what they say I can't change who I am, just be you and people will epresheate you of how you are, but not your parents there assholes😐

This mom is sick, giving a child information about a gender change. This is just putting the child is specific GENDER ROLES. Let her be who she wants and take er easy. Girls can like the hulk and not aspire to be a male.

    • @missrarity1687

      okay ...
so i have seen plenty of documentaries on the case of Gender Identity Disorder.
kids who 100% in their mind know that they are in the wrong body.
Most doctors and psychiatrists talk extensively with the child to judge this.
And a lot of cases are actually phases. This is one of them.
just saying she likes boy clothing because it has boy intended items on it isint enough.
there are PLENTY of things that girls like as well but advertising only gears towards boys.
for example. when i was younger i loved videogames and yugioh and i hated anything pink and girly. I was a tomboy and wore baggy clothing. my hair was short.
my little sister the pure opposite.
everything pink. dress up. princesses. playing house.
but even though i liked these things i knew i was a girl. my mom didn't go overboard like this mother having talks with her about gender transition.
thats for the doctor to decide.
and even then when she turns 12 to 13 if they do decide to give her drugs they are only blockers.
      that PREVENT puberty.
they are taken for years until they are 18 and are given hormones that they inject into their thighs.
i honestly think she is just a tomboy. and like me she will continue to love these things and accept herself as a girl

I wanted to be a boy at that age too, but I don't know anymore. I still wear like "boy" clothes and I still do "boy" things.... but I am more confident and I believe that I can be a girl. I do not know why they just think that they want to be boys when they are that young, they should discover themselves a little first, but this is only my opinion, not theirs.

Denis Fan4Life it doesn't matter what age you decide to transform, if you are a 54 year old and decide you want to boy/girl it doesn't matter. Just because they are young doesn't mean they can't choose decisions on their own

Okay.... when I was a child I would play with ALL boys toys, I was a huge tomboy for most of my childhood.. until about 14! However, I grew out of it. I feel like instead of automatically jumping to "my child is transgender" maybe you should take a chill pill, not bring up "oh these are signs your transgender," etc. It's really normal for children to be fluent with toys and such, however bringing up permanent topics to them such as surgery is idiotic.

Yeah but there's a difference between transgender and tomboy. Tomboy is just acting masculine. Transgender is being male inside and female outside. Your gender identity according to scientists develops in the womb. Yes I think that they shouldn't legally change names, but hire one blockers can be reversed in seconds, and HRT isn't usually given to people under 14 or 16.

I feel like this little girl is probably just a tomboy. I can't tell for sure but there are signs that children show when they are very young if they are the wrong gender and none were mentioned pertaining to this child. She just likes boy stuff and these parents have put the idea that she is transgender in her head. Just my opinion. Feel free to disagree, no hate.

It was a phase for me when I was like about 9 I wanted a ninja turtle birthday party and I asked for boy toys and stuff. I always went to the boy section when my mom took me to the store cause she would pick out dresses and skirts and I would say I don't like it and don't want it and she would say ok and I would get shirts and shoes from my auntie and she would often try to buy me little kid heels and stuff I would be mad and irritated but she said I'm just a Lil tomboy and got me sneakers. But when I started to getting older I didn't like showing my skin in tank tops and crop tops but now I'm getting into my girly side.

  • @Sunflowers9191

I think the mom actually does very well but why nowadays as soon as a child seems to feel more like the opposite sex, they say he or she must be transgender? What a bullshit.
I have nothing against transgenders and I know some people are born in the wrong body but the fact she likes boy things doesn't make her a boy?
When I was small I wanted to be a boy as well and I didn't care about anything girly. Now I am 25 and I am a really feminine woman. If this little girl feels more like a boy let her but it doesn't make her transgender? I think the mom shouldn't even mention the word transgender, it puts so much extra pressure on Lily.

All the comments are saying “she’s just a tomboy”, a tomboy doesn’t want to transition into a male. The mother needs to talk to him/her about transitioning.
