I can already tell you it’s going to be vastly inferior. A converter is just analogue to digital and the Wii has tons of filters built in that make the image worse. You’d need a retrotink in between to make the image better, but even then it won’t stop the wii filters as it comes out through analogue
Brother, I welcome you back to these console Mod Fridays, what a beauty of modification, the Wii is a great console and with these Mods it is honestly impressive.
This actually looks like it would be right up my alley when I can afford to get the parts necessary. I have limited soldering experience but I feel confident that this would be a good first console hard mod for me.
This is a hard one without some good soldering experience and a magnifying lens. Definitely get some practice with surface mount soldering before jumping in
I appreciate you saying that@@LIRetroGaming! I should have mentioned I've got a practice soldering board on my wish list for when I move forward with this mod to get me up to speed. I haven't done much soldering since high school but I'm always looking to learn more.
Yes! I was waiting for another digital-to-digital solution after the Wii Dual years back. I’m also waiting for homebrew devs to improve the scaling on the Wii U’s vWii since it’s not nearest or integer but it is digital 1080p.
Another option is to just get a Wii U which has a native hdmi port. It's already a full blown Wii, then you get the perks of Wii U games and you can still soft mod it all the way. Only downside is that it won't have the gamecube controller ports.
@@jlchips Yeah but I look at the console as more of a glorified HD Wii. Yeah most of its games are on switch, but the real value is in the wii, ganecube, gameboy advance, DS, N64, Playstation, Snes, and Nes games available to you by modding the console.
@@ChfHappySack I already have the capability to play Wii, GC, and DS games. Not to mention that a majority of N64, SNES, and NES games are available through NS Online already. And as for the other ones, there ain’t no good games for those consoles, too simple and primitive.
One can have a nightmare getting into a Wii with all those screws. I opened my Wii once to clean the fan and the insides, I can't say I enjoyed the experience. I put the screws all along a piece of tape in order of removal.
I bought a faulty Wii for fun once, opened it up, and wow there's many screws. Didn't find any shorts or anything and screwed it back up, only getting every screw in the right place was a win for me 🤣
Does this require the Homebrew channel or can this HDMI mod be done to a non-homebrew modded Wii? Love the fact that you use manual tools to cutout the location for the HDMI port. Dremel often gets away from you and makes things worse.
Is this higher quality than a Wii to HDMI adapter though?? And I don't mean those offbrand Amazon ones, I mean the Mayflash one which is actually really good. I don't wanna waste 200 dollars or however much it is (yes I saw that it's $120 but for the installation service it's more. I can't install this myself).
Mayflash is going to look very good. Technically this should be better because this is purely digital, whereas the Mayflash is an analog to digital conversion. But I have not compared these options side by side
Why do you switch between leaded and unleaded solder? Is there a benefit to unleaded in certain cases? EDIT: never mind I see someone else asked it and you answered. Thanks again for the great tutorial.
Would be really cool is if you could convert it to USB-C and even run PD through it aswell. Then its just one cable to a Modern USB C monitor with Charging to power the Wii.
That would be pretty cool, although I think the Wii needs 5v and also 12v to run properly. It might be tricky to do that with usb-c which I think only has +5v
Does the original component output still work simultaneously with the HDMI mod installed? My plan is to have the HDMI go to my capture card and have the Original Component go to my TV. Will that work or is the Component no longer functional with this mod installed?
Quick question. I have Wii component cables. Is there a benefit to doing this mod if I have cables that also put out 480p or is it pretty much the same?
Depends on your wii model. Wii outputs slightly worse than the gamecube because of some mis-configuration in the wii that can be fixed with homebrewing it. Wii HDMI mods bypasses that and you have the convenience of having an hdmi port on your wii.
@@samuraivader3814 I looked into it and it’s usually an option that needs to be enabled in every piece of homebrew that supports it such as some emulators. I’m not sure if it works for disc games but it is supported in backup loaders such as USBLoaderGX. Cool.

Does this mod disable the native video port? The kit description mentions "HDMI only" curious if that meant only one output at a time or if we would loose composite output entirely.
no, but it also doesn't add RGB/YPbPr (depending on the region of the wii) like the wiidual, although that is a really minor issue considering the wii already supports the one that is more widely available in the region it was sold.
The older pure digital HDMI mod only worked on later-model Wiis. Is this new chip compatible with launch and older model Wiis. If so, I'm definitely interested as I own two 👍👍
I don't remember hearing anyone mention either removing lead-free solder, or using it with mods like these. Is it a personal preference thing such as soldering temps, or is attempting to mix the 2 different solders bad practice?
It’s not good practice to mix leaded and lead free. Eventually they separate and the solder joints crack. So if there’s lead-free on the board, you either have to stick with lead free or desolder the lead free and replace with leaded. Personally I hate dealing with lead free so that’s why I removed it in the video
@@LIRetroGaming Thanks for the info. I feel like a lot of install videos don't mention this. Is there a list of consoles that use lead free, or a sure way to tell? Wondering about installs such as N64 digital DC digital GCDual etc.

Also, the jumper on the board is used for programming the firmware to flash in circuit, it needs to be closed to do the programming and open to actually use the system, so your source probably just didn't clear it after programming the firmware.
@@coopercummings8370 I know I could do that. I would consider myself to be very good at soldering so that's not the issue. I just don't trust myself to order the correct components and I trust myself even less to flash the firmware onto fpga. I've never done the latter and I'm sure I would need additional hardware to flash and that's all just to much for me. I'd rather just buy a finished product to install myself.
How does the graphic compared to Wii Dual? the graphic on wii dual is underwhelming. I have a PS1 HDMI mod. Wii dual mod is a great technical achievement but compared to the Dreamcast HDMI/PS1 Digital solution it's lacking in output option. If wii dual offers 960p native or within a boxed 1080p signal as well then it'd be fantastic
It’s the exact same video output as the dual, so it’s only 480p. If this is paired with a scaler like the retrotink 5X, then you could get a much nicer 960p result

I forgot to mention this in the video, but it has been discovered that the Wii U has some issues with accurately displaying Wii games. Apparently the aspect ratio and the colors are a little bit off when compared to an original wii
