I really feel like we're in the golden age of hardware hacking. I just got done modding my GameCube to use HDMI, be powered off of USB C, and have a bluetooth connection for controllers, and can't wait to see more wii mods.
There are more options than ever before and the important thing is that these mods are safe and clean. You don’t have to turn your console into some kind of disastrous science project like mods from 15 years ago
The lack of HDMI on the Wii really is odd considering when the system came out. HDMI was pretty standard for new TVs in 2006 as far as I know. Nice work as usual!
I think Nintendo made the right choice as not only did they save in manufacturing, but it helped sell to places like nursing homes, hospitals, daycares, etc. I feel HDMI became more standard in like 2009. I had many friends at school, (as well as long distance over the internet), who were playing their Xbox 360s and PS3s with composite/component cables. I personally bought my first HDMI TV in like 2008, but it was to mainly experience 1080p games like Gran Turismo Prologue.
I personally didn't have a HD TV until around 2009/2010 myself so it didn't bug me and it actually looked surprisingly good on my HD TV with it's AV ports so I was never bothered by it until I upgraded to a 4K monitor a few years back without any AV ports. Luckily that's a easy fix by just buying a retrotink to line double it to make the image a bit cleaner and output it in HDMI.
A VERY tiny correction, but while the PS3 had HDMI out of the box, at first the 360 only had analog too, though it supported full RGBHV through VGA as well as component. It wasn't until the later "Elite" model that they finally provided digital HDMI output. Still, it's a very tiny nitpic since the majority of the 360's lifespan, it had that port post- Elite. Not to mention there's very few of those pre-Elite consoles still in working order for red ring reasons...
I would love to buy a refurbished or well maintained wii with a HDMI Mod done by someone. I don't have the soldering skills to do it. Definitely the best route to go for a modern tv if you want the best results possible.
@@josteinkallevik WiiDual is technically better because you get simultaneous dual output of analog + digital. Just make sure it has been flashed to the latest GCVideo 3.1
Personally if you are playing a bunch of old systems with older outputs like AV, S video, scart, etc., I reccommend investing in a Retrotink 5x. It's somewhat pricey but it saves you a lot of money and time in the long run from mods and adapters by giving you really good image quality out of any console you throw at it. It can even tackle the N64 pretty well which is saying something considering how notorious that console is to get a decent image out of on modern displays. Really big fan of Mike Chi's work. I want to save up and get that new Retrotink 4K since I hear it's even more impressive than the 5x.
I've not installed mine yet, I've had it for a while now haha just building up the courage to do so. My soldering skills aren't amazing so I'm nervous!
I accidentally ordered the IR sensor board thing. Not sure where I could mount it on the regular Wii. I tried PMing Electron-Shepard but no reply, so guess it was intended for the Wii Mini.
The IR sensor is for Wii consoles that don’t have the GameCube ports. If yours has gamecube controller ports then you can omit installing it altogether
I am looking to get into some mods, I noticed you have the $100 hakko station I was looking into that or the pinecil I want to do the picoboot mod and a RCM X86 chip for my switch, which iron do you think is the better choice? I like the idea of the pine iron being cordless but is it good enough for those mods ,not looking to do anything more complicated like mariko mods
Personally I like the Hakko a lot as an all purpose, high quality iron. It will certainly work for those mods you mentioned. The wireless irons are nice but in my experience they don’t last all that long
One thing to consider is the thermal mass of the soldering iron. A cheap soldering iron would work fine for most stuff, but will usually struggle to melt solder that is connected to a large ground, power plane or heatsink. A higher quality iron will be able to handle such things much better.
i did my first ever mod on a gamecube using that soldering iron. its awesome! installed a picoboot. took a second but it is worth it. get heldersgametechs quick solder flex. it’s easier. they even send it presoldered to the picoboot! i got the pinecil too! its still in the box. i reinstalled the ave hdmi mod on my wii. after i assembled it😢 had to take it apart and reflow the vias. what a pain😅 its good now..stayed up all night disassembling it and fixing it. oof
Any recommendations on microscopes to use when doing this and other HDMI console mods? I see a Celestron Labs microscope in the background of the video, any good?
I have been using that binocular microscope for years and it works well. It has good depth of field and I can do all the hdmi mods without issue. Only downside is that I can’t capture video, but that’s only a problem for making TH-cam videos
I was wondering if it would be possible to remove this disc drive to clear space for a external drive inside the console I have 4 wiis and thinking about just going for it if I don’t get an answer
Would you recommend this mod over the WiiHDMI from Arthrimus? I see that this one is smaller but the other one looks more solid for lack of a better word. Are there any benefits from one to the other? Any better sound or visual clarity on either?
I have the wii2hdmi adapter. Does this have any advantage over that? Is there a difference in latency? I am still using composite cables for the most part, just considering a low/no latency hdmi option. And the Wii U is good, but no gamecube support.
yes, the wii2hdmi translates analog to digital while this hdmi kit is digital to digital, thereby offering a cleaner, purer signal. some might not think that to be worth the effort or investment, and some do.
@@MrKevinritsema if you ever get a Wii U, I could help u out. GameCube has 100% support bc it can run GameCube natively but you cannot use ur memory cards or controllers u need a virtual memory card and u can use Wii and nunchuck (not recommended) Wii U pro controller (kinda recommend if u have it) or my case the Wii pro controller because you can find ones with the GameCube layout
Not to mention, Wii and GC games picture quality is diminished on the WiiU. It’s not too bad, but considering the larger availability of Wii units compared to WiiU’s, and the relatively low cost of this mod, it’s really nice to see.

powering off USB-C legitimately sounds cool as hell
makes me wanna mod my gamecube to do the same
Just wait for the M.2 SSD adapter.

This will be great to use with my HDMI to composite adapter
this made me laugh
hilarious😂
nice

I forget who it was but I remember someone who was a lead on the Wii saying they regretted not adding an hdmi port
I think Nintendo made the right choice as not only did they save in manufacturing, but it helped sell to places like nursing homes, hospitals, daycares, etc.

Not really odd considering CRT’s were still around then. The original XBOX 360 released the year prior, and it didn’t have HDMI either.

Hardly standard in 2006. It was certainly available in 2006. It wasn't really 'common' until 2009-2010.

Happy Friday! Always excited to see when you post!
Thanks! It’s always good to get a video out
I love watching your videos, thank you so much for all your hard work and for putting these videos together.
Thanks so much I really appreciate that and I’m glad you enjoy the videos
The day they manage to make these old consoles at least 1080p, we win.
There will be a 1080p mod released very soon for the Wii, which is awesome
George is a genius keep up the good work bro 😎 thank you for putting me on to the mister fpga

Nice install :) I still have a dual kit to fit into my wii. this made me whanna do that install now :)
The Wii dual is awesome as well, that’s what I have installed in my console
So no big upgrade to go for the AVE I guess, the wiidual will still performe good?

The Tink products are great and I have them too. I think it all depends on how you use your setup and how many consoles you own
Nah too expensive. A GBS-C or OSSC is much cheaper and works fine. I personally use the GBS-C because of the motion adaptive de-interlacing.
I've not installed mine yet, I've had it for a while now haha just building up the courage to do so. My soldering skills aren't amazing so I'm nervous!
It’s definitely a bit challenging. Do you have a magnifying lens? That will make the install much easier
Why didn’t 480p get recognized when you plugged it in?
You did a good I would like if you do this with my Wii Console
Sure, you can contact me at 1uprestorations.com and I can install it for you

Looks great! I just got my avehdmi in the mail. What wire gauge did you use?
I used 28 gauge copper stranded wire
What would it cost to send you my wii for the hdmi installation, as i live in the uk?
Can you make a video about how to put HDMI mod on wii mini ?
There isn’t a mod for that yet, but hopefully some day!
How do I install the ir sensor?

Can you still play gun games on HDTVs?
That’s a big topic and it depends on the console. For the Wii, yes you can play gun games on a modem tv.
Would you recommend this mod over the WiiHDMI from Arthrimus? I see that this one is smaller but the other one looks more solid for lack of a better word. Are there any benefits from one to the other? Any better sound or visual clarity on either?
The two mods both provide the same quality video and audio, but the AVE HDMI is easier to install
What type of flux and gauge wire do you use?
I normally use MG Chemicals No-clean flux and 28 gauge copper stranded wire

Sadly this is true. I try to make it clear that these things are not easy but people always try when they have no experience or tools

The Wii U outputs awful video quality for Wii and GameCube games.
That’s like saying PlayStation made a hd ps1/ps2 the ps3 although you can play those games in hd they are completely different consoles
That’s not a Wii, that’s the Wii U.
These mods are cool, don’t hate on people’s hobbies.
80 € plus tax and shipping > buy a used wiiU instead.
I thought the same thing until I saw how much worse the wii U hdmi output is
when i installed this on my system it says 686x456i 60
on the wii menu it wont let me choose hdtv on screen settings??? am i missing something
