*** Hopefully very helpful in your learning of my opinion of the 'drumming' & ins-and-outs of ZZ Top's LA GRANGE, from their wonderful 1973 album TRES HOMBRES.
This video contains no actual music whatsoever. It is just me teaching and playing.

I have struggled for a couple of years to find a drummer who's enthusiasm and commitment to his beliefs exude so much passion. Your interpritaion of "La Grange"....warts and all, is amazing. The mistakes are unbelievably helpful for young drummers starting on the long road. All they see on you tube are well rehearsed clips with no errors. You havea taught me so much about the way Frank Beard played this song..... A bit too many shuffle options for my liking, I just play it straight with snare accents on the two and four but hey ooh your research is amazing....You have brought a smile to my face ...keep on posting!!!....Baz the Brit

I like the fact that you mention it’s the way You hear/heard it on the 73 recording. My friend was saying there was a bass drum note first on the flam triplet triplet break, whereas I don’t hear the bass drum note. Cool, love the tutorial!🥁

Thank you, thank you! I’m a long time musician but new drummer. After mastering Back In Black (cool shades, ha ha) and some basic beats, learning to play with others. It’s been a challenge being the drummer, realizing you’re the time keeper and then start to fall apart but jump back in. All in good time.
I appreciate this video you made with all the other options and ways it sounds from recording to recording. I just subscribed to you because I like your honesty and how you break it down a bit more than others who just show me a great tab or no tab but play it straight though and call that a lesson.
I have just been playing the shuffle on the ride more vs the snare with ghost note to note two times each measure and 1, 2, 3, 4 on the kick.
Love you breaking down the fills too! Thank you! Keeeeeep on rockin’

I want to thank you for these videos! I'm a teenage drummer whose been watching these for about a year or two and they really help! I think personally you should put more videos of music from other bands like Van Halen, Cream, etc. that would be really cool to watch a breakdown from since no one on the internet has any videos of songs from those bands. I used a drag, Tap, flam on the opening part with the sticks on the snare rim. For someone who is just learning this part, all you have to do is loop that part, saying to yourself, "a drag tap flam, a drag tap flam, a drag tap flam", etc... with a triplet feel and it comes out exactly the same. Well, that's how I taught it to myself. I think it's the same thing.

I think you are right and he shuffles his left hand and plays quarters with his right. I have a guilty secret I covered this song many years ago as I had a bass player who lived ZZ Top but I never really listened to it as I was never a big Top fan so I just played a shuffle on the snare RR LL RR LL with the occasional ride on the on the 1 and it worked. After watching this I wish I had paid more attention but for me there are drummers one analysis every single beat like John Bonham and Clive Burr and those where one just wings it and for me ZZ Top were in the latter category but I really enjoyed this and made me think about Top in a different light. Eliminator was one of my earliest albums as it was rock but also accessible to parents. This is good fun.

Another great one Terry! Pretty sure the absence of dynamics live was/is because his drums were/are triggered with dynamic response all set to zero. I also believe I remember reading that a lot of the drum parts were not played live in the studio, in essence. Frank would play a bar or two and then that would be sequenced/looped, recorded back onto tape, and fills spliced in. That's why it's so crazy consistent.

    • @bonzoleum
      @bonzoleum  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

***** No shit? Thanks for the info, Dennis! It's not that he plays it bad live-it's just not the ultra smooth groove sound of the recording.

At the 10:25 point in this video, what I do when playing this is grace notes on the first three strokes, then snap my wrist with a bit of authority. All wrist, very little movement in the forearm. The grace notes > 1 and a
TWO! 1 and a TWO! And yes, quarter notes on the ride and bass drum.
Good stuff here! Love your videos.
Also, at the 14:00 point, he stays the same, just switching from ride to hats. Still 1 and a TWO! on the snare. Yes, the grace notes do give the audio illusion that perhaps there's more going on, but that's really just quarter notes on the hats. Hey, hes Frank Beard and this is the Texas shuffle.
At 20:14 point, what I do for the fill is flam on the snare, then single strokes > right foot left foot, floor tom rack tom....then repeat. It comes out sounding like the 1973 Tres Hombres recording. I'm not saying I'm positive that's what Frank plays, but it sounds great when I do it.

You might be right about the way he played it.
I never watched him do it but, to my ears, back when I was all "chopped" up, (the 80's), I heard something different and played it a different way.
    When counting - 1 and A 2 and A 3 and A 4 and A -
I played my bass drum, only on the "A"s.
Try this "shuffle" and see what you think.
    ;)

+drumsticknow I know exactly what's it's called. But in Texas we call it a double shuffle. I personally know Frank. We pride ourselves on having things named after our great state. But down here we just call it a double shuffle. Plain & simple. We don't go around calling it the "Texas Shuffle"! Thanks for the reply. And thank you for the FYI but I already knew that. But I was just trying to help you since you said you couldn't distinct what Frank was actually playing. Have a nice day & God Bless.

La Grange is a small town about 1 hr west of Houston TX. I used to drive pass it during early 2000. Consider ZZ Top is from Houston, I assume they use that town name for their song
