I’m seventy years old now, riddled with arthritis and haven’t played for at least twenty years. I’d forgotten how fit one must be to play a song properly all the way through and maintain the tempo and stay crisp. This video reminded me, it’s a lot of fun to play this song but it’s a workout. Well done Sir! Thanks for the video.
Hey Peter.
At the end of the day it‘s all about comfort and creating flow
You can play any swing/ shuffle groove to get through the song.
I wish you the best my friend 🙏🏼🥁
Elder Brother
Thanks for The
Inspiration!
Take Care!
YOU CAN END ALL YOUR ARTHRITIS BY SIMPLY WORKING OUT WITH WEIGHTS EVERY OTHER DAY FOR AS LONG AS YOU LIVE! YES! USING DUMBELLS AND LIGHT WEIGHT, DOING MEDIUM HIGH REP RANGES AND DOING FULL BODY WORKOUTS, YOU CAN BUILD LOST MUSCLE, AND ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THAT? THE JOINTS, LIGAMENTS, AND TENDONS THROUGHOUT YOUR BODY WILL ALSO STRENGTHEN, AND THE SWELLING OF YOUR JOINTS WILL END! ITS NOT OVER TIL ITS OVER! GET OUT THOSE DRUM STICKS AND DRUMS AND GET TO A GYM! YOU WILL BE PLAYING AGAIN WITHIN WEEKS!
This song, much like Tush, is one of those songs few drummers play right. Not only technically right but with the right feel. You nailed it.
Thank you Glen!! Much appreciated 🙏🏼🥁
Ya, this is how I have always heard it. It's actually kind of hard to do even when I felt like I had good chops. I sometimes would wonder if Beard had a stand in drummer for this because it was way more than what he normally did.
@@douglohr7361 I don’t believe so. Frank was the king of the Texas shuffle back of the day.
Chris, I've never seen you before, but your enthusiasm for showing us the patterns and breakdowns is so delightful!
As a living room drummer, I appreciate it!
That means more than anything to me. Thank you so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Loved this video, I just purchased a kit about 10 months ago and doing pretty good to be self taught. I've been beating on the steering wheel ever since I could drive and finally bought a kit at 63 years old. I'll keep following you Chris.
that is awesome to hear. please keep me updated how things are going. best wishes my friend!
You are an incredible teacher! I had so overcomplicated these fills from a technical standpoint, but your interpretation is spot on. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Richard 🙌🏼🥁🙏🏼🙏🏼
Nice breakdown of this iconic song. The Texas shuffle is my all-time favorite shuffle to play, and this song took me a while to learn to play it as close to how Frank does it but Frank himself varies it in live performances. Nicely done!!!
Loren, thank you 🙏🏼
Perfect structure of the lesson. Loved the smile in your face and noticing the fun you have. That’s what I like when drumming. It’s all about having fun.
😊 thank you
Great explanation of this classic Frank Beard groove! It's one of those songs that sounds so simple, but it's more difficult (for me) when played correctly. A bit like Zeppelin's Rock & Roll. Thank you for making these incredibly informative (and entertaining!) videos!!
Thanks Bryan! Definitely one of the most challenging grooves for me so far but very rewarding practicing it 🙌🏼🥁🙏🏼
So far it’s proving to be very difficult for me. I’ll keep plugging away because the shuffle groove sounds so awesome and I want to master it.
LOVE the drums of this song!
Being a long time drummer and a ZZ Top expert only in that I’ve been attempting to play la grange and cheap sunglasses now for many years as we play at every show in my cover band. One thing that I believe would assist other drummers in learning la grange etc is to help drummers get into but more importantly out of the fills here. That’s super tricky. Peace and amazing vid. Very helpful. I wonder how many folks can even play the Texas shuffle at a gig?? That’s a new one on me so I’ll start practicing. I was cheating!! Lol.
That's a beautiful drum set
Thanks for the accurate explanation. You are the only one that does it like Frank. I've been behind him on stage, playing that live 100's of times. Nobody gets the snare hand correct. Everyone does the common rock/blues swing. Nice work! 💯💯💯💥💥💥
Thank you Ed!
@@ChrisHoffmannTube not sure if you realize this, Chris-but Ed was (or is) Frank’s drum tech. That’s some high praise!
Thanks so much Ed for your feedback - really means a lot coming from you!!! 🙏
Thank you Glen for introducing us ;) Ed, it's my pleasure to meet you virtually :) Thanks so much again!
Frank beard was a great drummer and very underrated. This song has got so much more to it than u would think by just listening. Thank u for the break down but its still not easy! At least for me...thanks for the breakdown...still trying to get it here in Idaho...
Bro ... exquisite bead height on that shuffle ... lets you play it delicately as a shuffle ought to be while maintaining the power of rock.
Outstanding analysis! Playing is one thing - HEARING is entirely another and to analyse, ‘dismantle’ then explain the subtlety of a player like Frank Beard is a skill in itself. Excellent work!!
Thank you Jon! My pleasure. Really appreciate your words 🙏🏼🥁
Fantastic breakdown.
Thanks 🙏🏼 🙌🏼
Thank you. That's what I always thought it was even though some really good drummers disagreed with me.
You‘re welcome 😉
Outstanding.
😊 thanks
Brilliant‼️✌️🌻
Thanks Markie 🙏🏼🙌🏼🥁
Absolutely superb.
thank you very much :)
Alan White's drum sound from Whats The Story Morning Glory ! :D
Thank you so much for this! I've been wondering how Frank played this for years. Everything I tried didn't sound quite right. Now, I've got to practice to get it right. ✨✨
My pleasure 🙏🏼🙏🏼
The best advice I can give to any fan that wants to learn La Grange is watch multiple videos of the band playing and there are quite a few that focus on Frank starting the song out and into the shuffle
Stay at it and enjoy learning
Great demonstration and explanation. Bravo!
So well explaned. 👍👍👍
Thank you 🙏🏼
i m 73years old your a great professor and drummer ( je suis français :bon batteur 'et supere prof) merci à vous

It's my pleasure Michael. thank you.
Fantastic job! Nailed it, I learned from this for each part of the intro, grooves, and fills that I had been wondering about. Pearl President sounds fantastic too!
🙏🏼🥁 thanks
Great stuff... much appreciated!!!
You‘re welcome 🙏🏼 🥁
Very nice! Perfectly explained and I really like all of the loops over and over again.
thank you :)
Superb explanation!!
Thanks 🙏🏼
Great tutorial! Thanks for covering ZZ!
My pleasure 😊
That is the best explanation of la grange ive come across, and the drums sound sehr gut! Enjoyed watching this...
My pleasure. Thank you. Dankeschön 🙏🏼🥁
AWESOME , THX
You‘re welcome Maximo 🙌🏼🥁
Nice breakdown!!
This is great instruction. I love the three-peat demonstration. Only thing really needed, as the quarter-note triplets prove, is a feet cam. We should see the feet/hands blend.
Thanks Julian 🙌🏼 We‘ll keep that in mind for future lessons🙏🏼
Perfect instruction on this song
Thank you Derek 🙌🏼
man, if only i have know 40 years ago... thanks!!
You're welcome Rodrigo
That was a great breakdown of the song. You're a great teacher for drumming nuance. Very good actually. I appreciate the hints for all levels of playing experience. Thank you. 🙂
Means a lot buddy. Thank You.
Great Lesson Chris! You played it perfectly!
Thank You JC! 😊🙏🏼🥁
Sweet kit.
Yes indeed 🥁
GREAT DRUMMING. I didn't realise that this song was so demanding for the drummer!
Amazing right? 😊
@@ChrisHoffmannTube Yes.
Very good drum lesson!🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Thank you Arturo 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Great lesson. Killer kit!
Thank you Lima
this is a very nicely presented lesson.
thank you :)
Hard to do, nice to hear. Thanks for lesson💪
You‘re welcome 🙏🏼 😊
On second fill your example jumped (actually a huge leap) from playing single first note of trips on toms to full on/ full speed. Could you give an example of entire fill at slow speed ?
This leap from 1st grade to post grad studies is something many online teachers do which does nothing other than frustrate most students.
You are a fantastic player and teacher. Thank-you.
Thank you so much for this video. Love the way you teach 👍🏻
Thank you Jerry 🥁🙏🏼
Thanks for this video; I've practiced the song from memory but have never owned the recording. You've filled in some of the details I missed. That unison shuffle between the left and kick is so important for a real blues shuffle.
Awesome Tom 🙌🏼🙌🏼🥁
Klasse Chris 🥁🚀
Lui
Stellar! Thank you so much!
You're welcome :)
@@ChrisHoffmannTube You provide the best breakdowns, and you keep it fun! Thanks again!
@@edmasi It's my pleasure
Great breakdown Chris, and well played.
thank you Keith!
Thank you thankyou awesome
Don't need the shuffle full time on bass drum. Quarter notes and occasional shuffle is all that's needed. I do a cross stick hihat to snare drum fill instead of doubles on snare drum. Fun song to play. Thanks for lesson
Thanks Greg :)
Cool tuto merci.
You‘re welcome 🙌🏼
I really enjoyed that. Nice work!
You‘re welcome 🙏🏼 🥁
Great job man! Thanks for putting this out there...lot of fun and very informative!
It's my pleasure John! Thank you!
Very informative video! Nice Drum Kit!
Thanks Steve!
You did a real good job with this!!!
Thank you Ronnie 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Awesome breakdown. I have yet to learn the shuffle feel, but your explanation makes it much easier to understand. Thanks!
Thanks J. I appreciate it 🥁🙏🏼
This is the best Tutorial on You-Tube of this Song. I'm no beginner but this song has given me problems and now I can go back out with my nightclub band and play it right... TY
thank you great explanation and visual bring more please.
you're welcome! :)
Very helpful...linear placenent of RLK is very cool. The shuffle also adds solid groove dynamics. Thanks for your master teaching skills brother.😎🥁🤘
Thank you Phil 🙏🏼🥁
The drums on this track are way cooler than I initially thought, great video and great breakdown
Toll erklärt ❤
Danke 😊
Thanks!
Thank YOU Alan 🙏🏼🥁
Heard It On The X. Or Back Door Love Affair medley from Fandango, Frank just torches it.
Heard It On The X is very cool. Frank is a legend!
the intro fill is my favorite fill of all time from any song, but I'm not sure why.
Awesome 😎🙌🏼
I've been so long looking for help on this song!thank you so much Chris!i was over complicating it so bad!still a tough groove, but now i know how to practice it!thanks again!hope to catch more of your videos brother!
Thank you Tommy. 🥁🙏🏼 Glad I could help. There are more lessons on this channel. Have fun. See you on the next one.
Very practical and useful breakdown. Will have to go practice it now!!! One of those songs I have been meaning to learn but never got around too. YOu make it look easy ...which I am sure it is not ..but it is doable...thanks!!!
007 😎 Yes, it‘s doable!

Happy to hear that. Thank you John 🥁🙏🏼
Awesome breakdown, you make it look so simple. If only…
thank you William!
I love that you broke down Lagrange would have love to see you put it all together anf do the beginning part at the end. Just because. Lol Awesome I sent thos video to my sons. They been playing guitar and keyboard but getting into the drums. :- )
That‘s awesome Andrew. Thank you 🙏🏼 Shout out to your boys 🙌🏼
This is such a great channel. Keep up the good work!
thank you Richard! :)
The beginning triplet fill wth the hihat could also be played as an alternating triplet. As well the quarter note triple fill into the guitar solo could be a flam tap. Hands/kick. Where the flam is a little open.
I don't play the drums but I did enjoy your video!
Happy to hear that. Thanks 🙏🏼 😊
