His journey still requires much more guidance friend, eventually he’ll be counting on us to let him know to listen to songs like Parabol/Parabola, and Lost Keys/Rosetta together
If you WANT to know some of the timings they have for their songs, I am quoting a comment of someone who tried explaining it; its amazing. This is for the Tool song "Jambi" "The “trick” for finding the beat with Tool is to NOT try to find the beat, but rather try to find “the pulse”. Try to “feel the pulse” of the song. To get technical, the song is mostly in 9/8 (except for the groovey guitar solo part, which is in 6/8). 99% of all hip hop (and honestly most rock and pop too) is in 4/4. That’s 4 quarter notes per measure before the pattern repeats. 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4. The easy head-nodding beat. But this song is mostly in 9/8. That’s 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-1-2-3...etc. You can count along from 1 to 9 and the pattern repeats. But that’s hard. And that’s because the song has “subdivisions”. Instead of counting 1 to 9, try counting 5 + 4, like 1-2-3-4-5-1-2-3-4. The first 5 has a pattern, followed by different pattern of 4 counts, and then back to the 5, then back to the 4. There’s a “pulse”. There’s clearly an emphasis on “the 1”. ONE two three four five ONE two three four ONE two three four five ONE two three four, and so on. Easy right? Fuck no, Tool makes it hard. That’s because each instrument is doing different subdivisions. Remember how I said the 9/8 pulse can be subdivided as 5+4? Well in the beginning the pulse is 3+2+2+2! (1-2-3-1-2-1-2-1-2) And then each instrument takes its own subdivisions. The drums become 3+3+3, while the guitar becomes 2+2+2+3, and the vocals are doing 3+2+2+2. The bass is doing 3+3+3 like the drums, but are leaving every 3rd beat out, so it feels like 1-2-__-1-2-__-1-2-__, which creates an triplet feel over the rhythm. So each instrument has their own pulse, but they come back together after 9 total beats, every single time. The “easy part” is in 6/8, which can feel like 1-2-3-4-5-6, but to me feels more like 3+1+2 (1-2-3-1-1-2) Then it’s back to 9/8, with all the different subdivisions, but then it switches to a half-time. The pulse slows down and the timing drops from 9/8 to 9/4. The brilliance of this part is that lyrics talk about breathing in union and coming together and becoming one, and all the instrument fall into a 5+4 pulse. They finally come together on the same pulse, to “breathe in union”. Anyway, yes almost all Tool songs have crazy time signatures and polyrhythms and polymeters. Jambi is far from the hardest to groove to, but it’s also far from the easiest. Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk"
Honestly I think they actually start from groove rather than the mathematical when it comes to writing. (not saying thats what you are saying, just made me think of this). Not saying there is anything wrong with such ways of breaking music down With the exception of Lateralus the song and specific sections in songs where they are being deliberatly poly rhythmic (some of these are even feel based too) s much of what they do to me is about groove even if its an odd groove. Thats what is so amazing to me about this band, there are hundreds of band s that use poly rhythms and although Tool was not the first they did pioneer some of it as did Meshuggah but for me the thing that sets both bands apart from many other is how groove based they manage to be.Another band that has this poly rhythm but groove based balance was Botch and at points DEP but they were a touch more erratic with it. But Meshuggah Botch and Tool all share a similarity even if they are all quite sonically different. They understand not just rhythm but how to use the accents, how to play accents across each other and do it in ways that are musically pleasing and easy for the ear to comprehend. They also get how different signatures can actually share accents and use these as pathways or bridges (like a 3/4 accent might be the first part of a 5/4 cycle to use an example) They all use it for feel of the section or the entire track they are using it in. I suspect with all 3 a groove based riff or beat is written, and the maths will come after that and/or be partially already present. What I am am taking a very long time to get around to ,is I think groove is actually the key to understanding and breaking it down is useful but it would not surprise me if in the case of all the bands I have mentioned, some maybe all are not using that way of counting consciously, its feel based, compartmentalised and bolted together, but feel not the less, and this is why these bands are great they are marrying maths, feels, technique, and of course great riffage and drumming
TLDR version, Danny is amazing because he makes the complicated easier to digest than it should be,and im postulating thats because it begins with groove
Good on ya. Great comment. I know f#%& all about music, but I have literally, intuitively described Jambi as a pulse forward. Again, not being equipped with musical literacy or nomenclature, it “seems” like Danny drives the journey forward versus laying down a foundation, although he does that as well, which would appear to be his unique genius.
Love that Tool reactions are pretty much their own genre of video now, definitely without question the best internet trend that 2020 has produced 😂😂 New sub here, love your reactions man, love that you appreciate the insanity of their musical complexity. If you liked the drums on this, *YOU MUST check out “The Grudge” next, it’ll absolutely blow your mind.* Keep up the great content! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Parabol/Parabola next please and it must be listened to together in that order. Parabol is the intro to Parabola. It sucks you into a worm hole and spits you out on the other side!
I've been a TOOL fan since 93 when my girlfriend took me to a little club to see them and I had no clue my life would change that night. I've been asked so many times "what's your favorite TOOL song?". I've come to the conclusion my favorite is whatever song I've heard last. Epic band.
I love how you'd start to crack a smile when DC would impress you early on, and as the progressive song progressed in intensity your smile got much bigger and frequent and was in sync with the progression of the song.
FIRST TIME HEARING TOOL..... Now I know why you like them and compared them to LZ! That was great! Thank You! This is classic example of how much good the technology can be when put in the hands of raw talent! The drummer was amazing!!! Being able to see it close up while it's happening - unison with the lights!!!!! (Hats off to the technicians on the set-up too!) EYEGASM and EARGASM! ROCKON!!!
danny carry is definitely one of the goats. jazz trained, tribal trained, absolute genius in meters, and polyrhythms. he is the lord of polyrhythms imho!
And so the Legend goes, shortly after Danny Carey's 19th Birthday he felt an urge to walk to a local lake near his residence in Lawrence,Kansas. It was there that a very dark storm cloud formed upon the lake. Danny was compelled to move forward to the edge of the lake, when suddenly the Loudest Thunder ever recorded in History was encountered & a hand emerged from the Lake holding two Hickory Promuco drumsticks. And so it was. From the hand of the Ghost of John Bonham to the new King of Rock Drumming. And the world has been blessed ever since! Danny Carey is a Human Octopus! Listen & React to Led Zep's No Quarter!! You will be blown away like all of the rest of us?
What i like about Tool the most is usually these ''out of order'' or ''irregular'' drums that somehow make perfect sence. If you try to keep track of drums and figure the rythm, you get lost but, it all makes sence when you listen to the song as a whole. I would say, they have quite unique drum sound!
Never apologize for appreciating Tool! They are today's led zeppelin meets pink floyd.... They have created a sound all there own! The level of complexity in the music is untouched. The depth of lyrics is astounding. You really have to do a lyric breakdown and research the meaning to come close to a full appreciation of what they do. A one of a kind band! And Danny is by far a unique talent on the drums. So few can recreate what he does. A virtuoso! Enjoyes your reaction. I saw you cheesing on the screen pretty much the whole time. That with you being a drummer says it all! I enjoyed you reaction style. Keep it up. Wish you the best and much success.
That's the TRUTH MY BROTHA!!! Not only are the greatest band since Led Zeppelin, Zeppelin is their favorite band too especially DC Bonham being his favorite drummer!
He drums with the vocals and bass at the same time!! Danny make me wanna cut my hands off as a drummer. Lmao...for realsy. Tool is muscle memory and I know these songs forward and backward and ALWAYS miss that dang snare hit....grrrrr...he rocks my a$$
my favorite part is 12:33 when he's just like "fuck you" to the cymbal off to his left. Doesn't bother to even look at it. Just pimp slaps it casually and moves on
Part of his set are “tablas” his signature electronic drum pad...he also runs roto toms a lot in place of regular toms (sometimes lol) like in this video He is a beast and one of the best in drumming for a fact Check out ticks and leaches, won’t be disappointed
I have been skirting around this reaction for quite awhile thinking do I really wanna see Tool. Well all I see and hear is fucking brilliant 👏 so glad I finally typed in.
I've been a LZep fan my whole life. Tool, by far; as skill, wonder, uniqueness, though an acquired taste that; has deep talent and meaning (especially). But they are talented beyond words. I look forward to seeing them in concert someday. No denying that feeling of spoken words and fearless music.
Helene here: I KNEW you would love this! I think we all did. So glad you got to it! (I’m writing this before I watched your reaction...we’ll see if I’m right).
Chod, don't feel bad!! There are probably only about 5 humans on the entire planet who can do this! It's the same way I feel when I hear or watch Guthrie Govans, or Martin Barre, or Al DiMeola, or any of those giants in the field of guitarists.
Third Eye - an intense, chaotic song that and is perfect for a reaction video - yet nobody seems to really have made one yet. You should do Third Eye asap because the whole Tool Army fanbase will go nuts over it!
He uses Mandala pads which are crazy cool and have something like 127 different programable strike points. Also just a friendly FYI the song is pronounced “new ma”. Great reaction thought your smile and head shake says it all!
Masterful. Great at the front with vocals and instruments. Carey's command of a very large and diverse kit reminds me of the great Neil Peart. I'm a new fan of this band. I drum and know a few things about drumming but Danny Carey wears his kit as part of his body. The syncopation and time signatures he is executing perfectly are something to behold. These songs require concentration and athleticism even with his natural skill set. I would say Danny is one of the greatest drummers of our time, and especially with this genre.
Dude I caught a sliiight mishap at around the 9 minute 5 second mark. He allowed the high hat to sizzle juuuust a little longer than he wanted to. And right at the end when he smiles at camera he slips just a bit with timing but he's a pro and covered it easily. That's freaking IT! Live? Crazy talent. Like best living drummer talent
You've acknowledged the drummer and bassist, but it's Adam (guitar) that does it for me. Just my opinion, but his tone and style is that ingredient that sets off the recipe and makes them uniquely recognizable. I love them all, but Adam is my guy. So many more goods ones for you to discover haha!
If there are or have been other drummers at Danny's Level God, they have yet to compose the percussion to a song, at anywhere near the degree of dificulty, that Danny does on every single friggin song and kills it, like it was nothing.
I've been waiting for months for you to watch this. You don't have to know anything about drumming to know Danny Carey is special. He is one of the GOATS. Amazing talent! Watch Gojira live. The drummer is another one.
I may have to send you into another wading pool and suggest Gojira. I'm not sure if we went that heavy yet but if you like heavy with groove, nice basslines plus hard riffs.. give them a try as well. I discovered Tool and Gojira around the same time and both bands changed my life in different ways. I would suggest Pray (live at red rocks), Silvera, The Heaviest Matter of the Universe, Flying Whales or Oroborus to begin to see if you are into that sound.
Yeah I'm a Zeppelin fan as well. And i believe that Bonzo and crew were the greatest until Tool came along. I wanted to yell "good luck" and "try not to count" at you before you watched this. Lol All in all i appreciate your reaction to Tool and appreciation of my favorite band. It's awesome to see someone new slip down the Tool rabbit hole. 🤘
Yeah man. As soon as you mentioned being a drummer I knew you had to see this video. Lol. Love the Tool journey your on man. Keep spiraling out. You should check out Ænema next. I love Danny Carey’s drums in that one and the lyrics are incredible. 🤘
Nothing quite like watching a master of his craft weave a tapestry of pure perfection. Enjoy boys.. guys like Danny and Neil don't come around to often and with todays bland over inflated processed music we may not see it again.
Great comments on how every musician/drummer has their own strength. For instance, DJ Johnson (of Khruangbin) is a FANTASTIC drummer, but could not possibly be more different from Danny Carey. (You'll see what I mean immediately!) Or like Bernard Purdie, totally amazing (see for instance the "funky groovy jam session").
U need to re listen to the studio version to hear it in a different more uniform light... this is gr8 too but u don't need crowd sounds n maynard in and out octaves n tones since its focused on just Danny. Peace yall TOOL ARMY UNITE!!!!
You oughta get adblock. It's free and stops all the ads. Works fantastic on youtube. Glad you are appreciating the talent level and artistry that is TOOL! I look forward to more reviews.
I'm surprised you haven't done Antonio Sanchez...! Antonio Sanchez Drum Solo - Drumeo This man is a BEAST also....!! I'm wondering if you ever read my comment from 10 months ago...? Peace
The smile that tool puts on your face brother is priceless ...I recommend Deftones ...you can't have tool without Deftones and vice of versa lol true story tho
I’ve got a group that I think may make your list of bands that kill those transitions. The Mars Volta! Here are a few songs to try out. Roulette Dares Eriatarka Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt Meccamputecture
Good reaction. He's unbelievable. If you want another amazing drummer to check out, look into Gavin Harrison/Porcupine Tree's song 'Anesthetize'. Also, Joey Jordison with slipknot is impressive.
I just watched a drum teacher react to this song and he said "I'm a drum teacher and I don't know what the hell he's doing". Which is probably not really true, but he also did admit that he couldn't do this.
There’s a different live version of this song from same show. The light show is crazy!!! Video quality is good, someone’s head gets in the way. Lol Td garden in Boston
"started when i was six, im now 27 and still could not do that" and neither can most people. he is a god and he is doin that while pushin age 60. if you really want him to throw you for a loop, listen to Chocolate chip trip. its all Danny. if you can find a live video of it, may make your brain explode more, not sure. keep riding the spiral man. diggin your reactions so far and i just recently found you.
Helene here....I know, right? I mean, I can name 10 rock drummers off the top of my head that were/are OUTRAGEOUSLY good....the best of the best. But Danny Carey? Holy cow.........my one big “I wish” was that Bonzo had been gifted with another few decades on this earth.....It would be wonderful to see what he would have gifted us with.....But right now? Carey is the MAN. Imho of course......
Really enjoyed watching! Since you brought it up, No quarter by Tool is more than an homage, of course you must listen to the original by Led. Sure hope seeing you react to that.
Dave Lombardo from slayer my personal favorite. Actually my favorite drummer is Frost from Satyrican but you probably shouldn't listen. It's super fast but Frost is a pro
I respect how humble you are a great character trait every man should have. Danny, to me is just a hair below Neil Peart mainly because Neil wrote the lyrics for the band. Dan is an octopus.
Great reaction. You refer to Led Zeppelin a lot on your Tool reactions. Check out Tools Led Zeppelin cover “No Quarter.” You will not be disappointed.
I was just gonna say that! He definitely needs to check that one out next fo sho!!!
One of the only covers I know of that dwarfs the original many times over.
He’s a bad man 🤔 HE IS THE OCTOPUS 🐙 🐙 the GOAT 🐐. TOOL ARMY our work is done here, no more requests, he wants more, just like us🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
His journey still requires much more guidance friend, eventually he’ll be counting on us to let him know to listen to songs like Parabol/Parabola, and Lost Keys/Rosetta together
Danny is almost 60 in this video. The guy's a beast!
I love the way they arrange their music. Tool is in a league of their own. You can't compare tool to anyone.
If you WANT to know some of the timings they have for their songs, I am quoting a comment of someone who tried explaining it; its amazing. This is for the Tool song "Jambi"
"The “trick” for finding the beat with Tool is to NOT try to find the beat, but rather try to find “the pulse”.
The “easy part” is in 6/8, which can feel like 1-2-3-4-5-6, but to me feels more like 3+1+2 (1-2-3-1-1-2)
Then it’s back to 9/8, with all the different subdivisions, but then it switches to a half-time.
Not saying there is anything wrong with such ways of breaking music down
With the exception of Lateralus the song and specific sections in songs where they are being deliberatly poly rhythmic (some of these are even feel based too) s much of what they do to me is about groove even if its an odd groove.
This was a quality TED Talk 👌🏻🤣
@@connorsmith377 It was so long I'm ready to watch the live version of Pneuma again
We got another one converted.Welcome to the family of TOOL.
Love that Tool reactions are pretty much their own genre of video now, definitely without question the best internet trend that 2020 has produced 😂😂 New sub here, love your reactions man, love that you appreciate the insanity of their musical complexity. Tool reaction videos may have supported the global economy more than any other single thing during the pandemic!
Parabol/Parabola next please and it must be listened to together in that order. Parabol is the intro to Parabola. It sucks you into a worm hole and spits you out on the other side!
yes !
This is just insane monster musicianship goodness
Honesty of one's own ability is so underappreciated. Shows that you probably ARE good and at least have a well-balanced and GOOD soul. Drum on my man!
I've been a TOOL fan since 93 when my girlfriend took me to a little club to see them and I had no clue my life would change that night. I've been asked so many times "what's your favorite TOOL song?". I've come to the conclusion my favorite is whatever song I've heard last. Epic band.
When someone asks me what my favorite Tool song is I aways reply "Yes"
The smile on your face while watching said it all. Great reaction!
Ive watched this video 1000 times, and it still blows me away
I love how you'd start to crack a smile when DC would impress you early on, and as the progressive song progressed in intensity your smile got much bigger and frequent and was in sync with the progression of the song.
I’ve lost count with how many times I’ve watched this. 🔥 Please check out the original version too. 🔥
Me 2
This is a brilliant musical composition, IMO. Practically modern classical. Wow.
I’ve rarely seen such clean, musical and virtuosic drumming.

Love Zeppelin and their wouldn't be TOOL without them. But TOOL is the best band ever. They do not have a bad song.
danny carry is definitely one of the goats. jazz trained, tribal trained, absolute genius in meters, and polyrhythms. he is the lord of polyrhythms imho!

you're lucky. i've been waiting 20 years for tool to release something like this ffs.

Hiya! You're right, there is nothing like TOOL; so Welcome to the TOOL Nation! Glad to have you luv! : )
The "Konga" Sound was a Korg Wave Drum Tabla Sound. The other Electronic Drums where Mandala Drums, which are made by his Co owned Company afaik.
my favorite part is 12:33 when he's just like "fuck you" to the cymbal off to his left. Doesn't bother to even look at it. Just pimp slaps it casually and moves on
Part of his set are “tablas” his signature electronic drum pad...he also runs roto toms a lot in place of regular toms (sometimes lol) like in this video
He is a beast and one of the best in drumming for a fact
Check out ticks and leaches, won’t be disappointed
Great reaction. Means so much more coming from someone who plays the drums.
Yes. He is a bad man. So many good Tool tracks in your future, you lucky dog. Check out "The Grudge", "Stinkfist", or "Bottom" next.
I second those suggestions. Especially Bottom.
I have been skirting around this reaction for quite awhile thinking do I really wanna see Tool. Well all I see and hear is fucking brilliant 👏 so glad I finally typed in.
All 4 appendages acting independently playing different rhythms and timing🤯
Now you are ready for vicarious with lyrics!!!
Michael Mangini from Dream Theater is kind of fun/interesting to watch. He's about the same age and also a cool dude.
I've been a LZep fan my whole life. Tool, by far; as skill, wonder, uniqueness, though an acquired taste that; has deep talent and meaning (especially). But they are talented beyond words.

Hey Mr. Wilburn, so much fun to see your mind get scrambled. And trust me I am right there with you.......
Helene here: I KNEW you would love this! I think we all did. So glad you got to it! (I’m writing this before I watched your reaction...we’ll see if I’m right).
I think the song itself was key. It gave the drummer a lot of creative leeway to show his chops. Truly a gifted artist!
Chod, don't feel bad!! There are probably only about 5 humans on the entire planet who can do this! It's the same way I feel when I hear or watch Guthrie Govans, or Martin Barre, or Al DiMeola, or any of those giants in the field of guitarists.

Different timing on every one of his 4 limbs...how?!!! The guy is insane, best drummer on the planet IMO.
You like rock and roll!!!! Try FUNKADELIC (Standing on the verge of getting it on, One Nation under a groove) all black psychedelic 70’s rock group!
He uses Mandala pads which are crazy cool and have something like 127 different programable strike points. Also just a friendly FYI the song is pronounced “new ma”. Great reaction thought your smile and head shake says it all!

Just subbed for the Tool rabbit hole. 🤘

Just found your station! Fantastic!
That beat is insane.
You’ve got to hear Vicarious and Aenima with all that’s going on these days. Have the lyrics pulled up.
So well said man. Danny Carey is a monster...scary amazing on that kit! I think, as a huge Zeppelin fan, Danny sits alone on that drum stool throne!!!
You must check out Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree live at Tilburg if you have been a drummer that long. Gavin Harrison..amazing drummer.
Lol
All in all i appreciate your reaction to Tool and appreciation of my favorite band.
You have incredible content on your channel. Great work! 🤘🤘
Ya he rocks that out. Danny Carey is on another level
i saw Tool in phoenix on halloween one year , and they sort of dressed like led zepplin and did 4 zepplin songs it was cool
Nothing quite like watching a master of his craft weave a tapestry of pure perfection. Enjoy boys.. guys like Danny and Neil don't come around to often and with todays bland over inflated processed music we may not see it again.
Best song live when I saw them in Tulsa before COVID hit. You know it's complex but you have no idea until you see it up close.
Some say that Danny made a deal with the devil, no one knows what Danny got but the devil got drum lesions.
You oughta get adblock. It's free and stops all the ads. Works fantastic on youtube. Glad you are appreciating the talent level and artistry that is TOOL! I look forward to more reviews.
The rabbit hole goes deep.
I must have watched the Vic video 1000 times and I still bum out every time it is over.
Check out Simon Phillips and Protocol. Another of the greatest drummers on the planet.
Nobody follows Danny on drums except Jesus and Neil P. RIP
You should definitely check out the studio version and get the full instrumental and lyrical effect (it's like going on a trip).
Roulette Dares
Eriatarka
Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt
Meccamputecture
Good reaction. He's unbelievable. If you want another amazing drummer to check out, look into Gavin Harrison/Porcupine Tree's song 'Anesthetize'. Also, Joey Jordison with slipknot is impressive.
It is said Danny Carey's ability comes from the fact his brain has 4 corners instead of 2 halves, each capable of controlling a limb independently.
I just watched a drum teacher react to this song and he said "I'm a drum teacher and I don't know what the hell he's doing". Which is probably not really true, but he also did admit that he couldn't do this.
I love Tool! But if you want to see the GOAT of drummers, check out any solo from Neil Peart from the band Rush.
There’s a different live version of this song from same show. The light show is crazy!!! Video quality is good, someone’s head gets in the way. Lol
Td garden in Boston
if you like complex drums, check out Rosetta Stoned, lots of drummers cover it just because its so crazy. Cool to watch.
great reaction
Danny is an octopus. confirmed.
"started when i was six, im now 27 and still could not do that" and neither can most people. he is a god and he is doin that while pushin age 60. if you really want him to throw you for a loop, listen to Chocolate chip trip. its all Danny. if you can find a live video of it, may make your brain explode more, not sure. keep riding the spiral man. diggin your reactions so far and i just recently found you.
as soon as you said you dont pause, I hit subscribe as fast as I could!!
Dude is a BEAST!!
Take away Neil Peart, my favorite drummer I've seen
Helene here....I know, right? I mean, I can name 10 rock drummers off the top of my head that were/are OUTRAGEOUSLY good....the best of the best. But Danny Carey? Holy cow.........my one big “I wish” was that Bonzo had been gifted with another few decades on this earth.....It would be wonderful to see what he would have gifted us with.....But right now? Carey is the MAN. Imho of course......
Why has no one recommended Rush? Since he's a drummer, he needs to know Rush.
This was my exact thought when he said he hadn't heard better than Led Zeppelin or Tool.Neil Peart is my favorite drummer.Bonzo 2 Danny 3.😅
💚L E G E N D💚
tHAT was badass drumming
Danny is hands down the GOAT
Really enjoyed watching! Since you brought it up, No quarter by Tool is more than an homage, of course you must listen to the original by Led. Sure hope seeing you react to that.
It was your headphone stopping your smile from going all around your head.
I want to genetically engineer an octopus to learn polyrhythms.
I paused it b4 vid started simply cuz I'm excited to see ur face when u see octopus arms in action. Enjoy.
Everythingyou can put on a set
he got it got it. Top 5 easy. great review
