I've been fiddling around with violin for 6 years and just found Calvin. All I can say is SHAME on the fiddle community for not telling me about him years ago. I feel like he should be mentioned right up there with the likes of Kenny Baker and Bobby Hicks.....
Well @Mark Upton, in the grand scheme of things, the fiddle world is relatively small and not a hugely popular one. Its' adherents are passionate but the audience is small. It stands to reason that a great many accomplished musicians are only well known amongst a modest number of people. I personally know a handful of certifiable fiddle geniuses but they will never become household names except amongst ourselves. And every so often another undiscovered musical gem comes onto the scene and blows everyone away. Calvin is a long time living legend and I'm glad he came across your radar.
Thanks Mark for the kind words. I'm surfing around youtube tonight and came across this video once again and see that it has a ton of views. Kenny Baker & Bobby Hicks along with ole Cal, now there's a smile on my face....thank you
I was a hip hop/scratch DJ in the 90s, an EDM dj in the 2000s, never listened to fiddling but this is growing on me and fast. Such outstanding musical fluidity. :)
Love your comment, @TomFooleryTheAustere. Always gratifying to hear from folks who may not necessarily be fiddle fans, but are able to at least appreciate what we do. Especially, when they come from very different specific musical backgrounds, genres, or cultures, far removed from our own. But it makes absolute sense to me. Many fiddlers have very eclectic far reaching musical interests outside of fiddling. I was introduced to punk rock by a fellow fiddler as a teen and it changed my life. Lead to appreciate metal, reggae, world, jazz, Hawaiian, electronic, rap...all of which in turn, influenced me as a fiddler.
I couldn't tell you how many times I've had your videos (especially this one) on repeat, either to learn to play tunes from, or as backround music while stidying for school etc. This set in particular is one to blame for sparking my love for fiddling when I started late 2019. It's been so great to finally meet and jam with some of these wonderful musicians in person over the past year or two, and I can't wait to keep learning!!
Absolutely love getting comments like yours, @allisonleroux763. The Joy of Fiddling channel has a lot of goals, but inspiring and educating are top of the list. On a personal note, it was because of this video I was introduced to (and enabled to learn) "Surveyor's Reel", which led me to the composer Andy De Jarlis, which led me to Métis style fiddling. Welcome to the fiddle family!
I'm 67. No violin music in my youth to be listening too but always been curious about it. I bought a violin when I was 14 but never played it. Needed to have the songs in my head to get it to my hands. So, a few years ago, I met this man at the senior house who played and a few songs began to take place in my head. A few months ago, I began to practice, by hear, and it's coming pretty well.My brother in law will be 80 next September 2021. My goal is to practice Reel de Ste-Anne and play it for him as a gift. He always wanted me to play that fiddle. He does not even know I practice. Just discovered your channel. This will help me a lot. Thank you!
@TheHudson51, your comment has made my day. It is never too late and one is never too old to bring music into their life. My mother had a student many years back named Ruth who was in her 80's when she started fiddling. She had no doubts that picking up her fiddle added years to her life and increased the quality of life in those years. I believe it will be the same with you. What a gift you are planning for your brother in law. So glad you found the Joy of Fiddling channel. Welcome to the Fiddle Family!
Wow vous êtes super bons je vous félicite et je vois que c'est pas la première fois que vous jouez de la musique. Vous êtes formidable et J'apprécie énormément de vous entendre c'est super ! Je vous souhaite une très belle journée xx xx
Well, first off Kaitlyn, welcome to the Joy of Fiddling channel. Always love to hear from young fiddlers who find inspiration in these videos. Secondly, congratulations on learning these tunes. That's a lot of music for anyone to digest, let alone a youngster. And third, you have chosen some wonderful musicians to emulate and I have no doubts, if you stick with it, you will reach your goals.
Kaitlyn, 10 years old and you learned all these tunes. Wow, good for you. So great to see a young fiddler with the passion to achieve. Hopefully one day I'll get to hear you play.
I have been playing fiddle for 5 years or so now, and all I have to say is that the level Calvin plays is beyond my comprehension. I know many of the songs he's playing, but can't physically go as fast as him! Extremely inspiring, I can just hope to be as well as he is some day :)
Your right Jon great fiddle playing .Thought you might like this little lady.My wife Louise Arsenault from Prince Edward Island Canada. Has been around for a few years and played in 15 Countries.
Wow. Thanks. I will certainly look her up! I just love the quality violin work....not just hacking away "bluegrass style". I am on my own violin journey now. I make them and play them. Wonderful instrument. Thankyou!!
It was a pleasure to be one of the "lucky souls who lingered"... I had been looking forward to see what would become of your video session with Calvin and Clinton -- and now we begin to see it. Thanks GW, another job well done. And thank you Calvin and Clinton. --Lyle Dixson
Hey Lyle! +FiddleSupporter Appreciate your kind words. It was a special evening, wasn't it? I'm glad to be able to share it with others. And thank you, Lyle, for all that you do for the Fiddle Family. Not only with your own fiddle-centric channel, but everything else you do behind the scenes.
WoW!! Gotta be some of the best pickin' I have seen on here!! Whatever it takes to make that wonderful sound...you guys have it in spades...thank you both!!
Calvin...every time I listen to this you remind me of my Father (Richard Callihoo) god rest his soul. He admired your music as much as I do. Thank you my friend!
Glad you found the video, Vania. (I have forwarded your comment on to Calvin) If you ever feel like having your own personal mini-Calvin concert, you can go into the "Playlist" section on this channel where you will find all of the Calvin and Clinton "Red Bluff Session" videos compiled in a single playlist.
My pleasure, +The Four Horsemen. None of the videos I post on this channel has an expiration date as far as replying to comments is concerned. The goal of this channel is not simply to have people watch the videos and rack up view count. (none of my videos are monetized/have advertisements, with the exception of one that has a copyright claim) My intent is that the Joy of Fiddling channel is also a place for the exchange of dialogue and information. Not every comment left on these videos is looking for a response. But if I feel I can offer anyone additional insight or If a specific question is asked, I pride myself on reaching out.
You noticed that one, Charlie? It stood out to me as well. Obviously, one of the lesser known tunes in the medley, but a good'un. It's on my "to-learn" list.
Are you just down the road from Red Bluff? If so, mark your calendar for the Western Open Fiddle Championships in October. Check out the "Western Open Fiddle Family" video on this channel to see what it's all about.
Calvin really made it into the big league while on No 1 West show playing with Brian Sklar and Prairie Fire. I recommend all to tune in to those shows . This was late 80s early 90s. He moved on into a solo career with Clint. mos60
That's okay. Also on No 1 West was another great fiddle player Donny Parenteau. Both Calvin & Donny were amazing during the shows. In fact, Nashville had nothing on these 2. Very talented. Enjoy. mos60
I loved playing on the Number 1 West Show for Brian Sklar. Long before Number 1 West, I played on CTV's Sun Country Show hosted by Ian Tyson & CBC's Native Nashville North TV show. Loved all the TV work I've done over the years
Miss all those great country TV shows. There was an amazing talent on the shows. No 1 West , what great performers including the great Frankie Rogers whom I know you appreciated so much. But guess you have moved on and have successful career. Enjoy all the vids with great fiddling. mos60
Dunno where to find, the video does tell you the 4 songs that are in here(incase u didn't notice, not trying to sound rude) ...Big John McNeil, St Anne's Reel, Surveyors reel and Devils dream
24 hackers with bad intonation gave this the thumbs down. I love Calvins playing, i love his influences that come from all over North America. Lotsa Tommy Jackson influence. Love it!
Thanks, Zeke. I hadn't noticed the number of thumbs down and I never know what it is the prompts an individual to go out of their way to cast a negative vote like that, but, I guess that one thing in life that is loved by everyone, everywhere, all the time just doesn't exist. I, too, appreciated that Calvin does not pigeon hole himself stylistically and he wears his influences proudly on his sleeve.
I have people in the industry that they the ones that are running everything encourage everything say oh you’re going to go along way and then they will destroy you

Calvin is more than a mere mortal musician. He’s on another level, another dimension! Great guitarist too.
@Blueyesbullet1, Cal and Clint are musicians who embody the whole concept of a musical conversation.
@@joyoffiddling That would be a wonderful understatement!!! Thank You so much for sharing this & more! So Good!!! :D
Glad you found it,@@timothywachowicz8308!
Wow! Love the unique fiddling style. I play the fiddle and the energy expended in that medley was nothing short of incredible
