- Just another night of music at Jeff and Eileen's. Gary, Tabby, Andy, and Doug drop by to play a few and it was decided to jam out on tunes in specific keys. This particular round was in "D". Video 1 of 3.

Amen to that, Chris. Where would we be without the pickers and the pluckers? They make the fiddle sound better. They make the fiddler feel good. Which makes the music better.

We love to hear that, Dube'. That's what it's all about. It brightens our spirits as well when we're able to play music together, which, unfortunately has not been possible for many months due to Covid-19. Doing out best to stay positive, keep our fingers nimble, and look forward to when we can be together again. In the meantime, it's nice to hear that folks enjoy the videos.
Y'all are just phenomenal, I started listening to you guys with 'Brilliancy' and found myself coming back for more. Keep up the good work!
Very kind of you to say. No one is more surprised about the reaction to and reach of that first "Brilliancy" video. As fiddlers and pickers playing this style of music, not only are we used to small audiences, we expect it. So, we are regularly dismayed that these videos receive any attention or comment at all. It's flattering to think that the draw is the musicianship, but I would imagine also that there is just something very appealing about good friends getting together to play for no audience whatsoever...but simply for the love of the music. Which is what we do on a regular basis. (barring any deadly virus that may be ravaging the country at the time) Come back as much as you'd like, Tallonfall. Everyone is welcome all the time. More videos will be coming again sometime down the road.

I remember 1970s Scottish fiddle jams in Glasgo with strathspey and reel societies rallies of 100 plus with one accordion.

Kind of you to say. I think at least part of what you are hearing is due to the fact that we're just a group of good friends who fiddle and pick (several of whom are not present in this particular video) and are blessed to be able to play together regularly.

Hey there, Alison. Glad you found us. Indeed, J and E's is one of our regular places to be around here, but jams like these can and do happen anywhere at anytime. You just need good friends who love this music and the rest takes care of itself.
You guys are musical geniuses. Absolutely beautiful how you guys work together on the transitions.
High praise, Jason, but I can assure you that everyone in this video would blush at being accused of "genius". Just a group of friends who are bonded together by a deep love for this music and for each other and who get together to jam regularly.

My grandfather enjoys fiddling music and your videos make him happy. Its nice to see people coming together to share talents for the sake of feeling good and happy :) mywasin that's nice in our language .
Hi Carla. I was very moved by your comment about your grandfather. When I was a kid back in the 70's and 80's fiddling was "a big deal" and we seemed to always have enthusiastic crowds and large audiences for this kind of music. Since that time our audiences have dwindled and sometimes the only people in the audience are family members or friends of the musicians. The good news is the quality and quantity of new young fiddlers and pickers has only increased over those same years. One of the main goals of this channel is to inspire this new crop of musicians. I forget that there are still some folks out there who just like to listen. Every so often a comment like yours comes in and I am reminded. So, thank you for that. Please tell your grandpap he is always welcome to pull up a chair and hang out at our jams anytime.

My grandfathers grandfather lol was a fiddler as well. I forget that they were influenced by someone at one point also because they are my biggest influences too. I am now a fiddling fan too lol oh and George Jones as well lol. Love your videos thank you for sharing your talent with us!

The fiddle bug has a tendency to manifest in a family's DNA and often gets past down and along over many years, although it sometimes skips a generation or two. Even in one's own lifetime, I've known many, including myself, who left fiddling behind for one reason or another, only to have fiddle fever roar back with a vengeance later in life. Music and tradition are a powerful combination that can become an irresistible force. For myself, I don't think I ever made a conscious decision to come back to fiddling. I just decided not to resist and to surrender. As though I had a choice.🙂

Now, full discloser, @@B.R.0101 I'm not sure how the Irish might feel about it...😬... but we're an open minded group who embrace all styles of fiddling. And we know many of the tunes we play came from Ireland, even though we may not play them in a strictly Irish style.
It's not so bad playing irish style or similar honestly it's so well played! Cool jam indeed and I hope to watch a video of them together again

Hey @Sarah Brooks. Everyone is this video has spent countless hours over their life time to sound like they do. All of us had goals when we first started. We all had our idols...other fiddlers we wanted to be like. And ALL of us today wish we could play just a little better than we do now.😉

Hey guys. I need a decent bow for learning. Are the one's you find in Guitar Center (or places like that) considered a decent bow for beginners? I've been playing guitar for 40 years, so I understand the benefit of learning with a good instrument! Thanks in advance
Well, Todd, that is not an easy question to answer. None of us is personally familiar with what Guitar Center is currently carrying in their bow department but even if we were, we would be hesitant to advise you one way or the other. Asking a group of fiddlers about what the "best" bow is, is like asking a group of ice cream lovers what the best flavor of ice cream is. Each person is going to give you a different answer based on their own personal taste and experience and each is going to have very good reasons why they chose that flavor. Even if we all agreed that vanilla was the best, we'd still have differing opinions on what version of vanilla is best....French vanilla? Vanilla bean? Slow churned? Classic vanilla? Sugar free? Fiddlers are always on the lookout for new gear, rosin, strings, horse hair, tuners, pegs....or making adjustments to the set up on their instruments...anything that might make playing more enjoyable, comfortable, or help the instrument itself reach it's full sound potential or help the the fiddler reach their full potential as a musician. For many it's a never ending journey. A perpetual work in progress. None of us are "bow snobs". None of us is wedded to a single brand or maker. Some of us have expensive equipment...but none of us believes that you have to spend a ton of money for a decent bow. When I came back to fiddling after a 27 year break, I was on a budget and my local luthier at the time recommended carbon fiber and he laid out ten of them on the counter. I began trying out every single one even though he told me they were basically all the same...but they didn't feel/play the same to me. I whittled them down one by one until I felt I had a "winner" and walked out with a $70 bow. I have since moved up to $200 bow (still extremely cheap) but I still have that carbon fiber. I have played on many bows appraised at thousands of dollars. Some of them were like butter. Loved them. Others made me wonder what all the fuss was about. Bottom line is...you will need to take the time to go into an instrument shop and just start trying out bows. When you find the "right one" or the "right one for right now", you will know. It'll give you a little kick. Hope this helps. Best of luck.
@@joyoffiddling Thank you for the response! I'm a beginner, so at this point it may be difficult for me to know what a good fit would be. I loaned my bow to a decent fiddle player several years ago, and he told me that he'd rather not use it, for many reasons. In fact, he said he'd throw it out! LOL. I guess I'll just have to search for what makes me a better player. I was hoping that maybe you could give me the make or model of the carbon fiber bow you prefer? I think I just need a place to start looking. Thanks :)
@@Todd_Connelly remember, just because a decent fiddler did not like your bow, does not mean it was not a decent bow. It just means that at least one fiddler did not like it. Also, a better bow can improve your comfort or playing experience which can lead to better performance. And a better bow can help get you a better sound out of an instrument. But a better bow will NOT make you a better fiddler. Only practice and playing makes you a better musician. It's been a number of years since I picked up the carbon fiber bow but I believe the maker was JT Jet. However, a simple online search for carbon bows will give you a healthy list of options in the $100 and up area.

Hey ZzZ Kan! While the piano was not played at this particular jam session, it has been played plenty of time at others. It just depends on who shows up to the jam. Piano pounders are always welcome.
Why do they all sound the same? I couldn't tell when you switched songs, except that the screen announced it was a different tune. I don't understand that.
Well, @Patricia Slocum, tunes in the same key do sometimes sound alike depending on one's ear for fiddle tunes. However, the last two tunes played would definitely sound the same, because they are the same tune. Andy didn't intend to play the same tune that Gary had just played, but anything can and does happen at a jam session.
@@joyoffiddling They say there are only three fiddle tunes and two of them are Liberty. :-)

@@joyoffiddling I try to play fiddle tunes on mandolin. I start by "tabbing" a tune out by ear. It takes a good bit of effort, but it is doable. Now, I have noticed a good number of phrases in one tune are, or can be, interchanged within another tune in the same key signature. There are only so many notes to be played within a measure or 4, but an unlimited combination. Sometimes these combinations overlap into a different tune that sounds like another tune. Just listen for a number of years and you will see what I mean. Cheers, Bob

Hey Petrina! You (and everyone!) are welcome to play along with us anytime. You won't find any tabs for the specific notes for the variations of the tunes in these videos, as each fiddler has been playing them for many years and they have evolved over that time and much of it is improvised. But, you should have no trouble finding notations/music/tablature/etc. for basic versions of the tunes. Just choose one to start with and internet search it (adding words like "fiddle tune", "notes", "music", "tabs", etc will help) and you should find a few different sources to select from. Joy of Fiddling You are most kind. I did suspect as much! I will do as you suggest and download some basic versions but also play along best I can and see what happens. Who knows, I might find myself improvising in order to fit in. I have listened many a time and just thankyou for taking the time to record and share-such an inspiration.

A great many of us learned by ear...and I personally cannot read music. I always start out learning a new tune the only way I know how...by listening to them over and over...and then I start putting in the work on the individual notes. I never thought I could improvise either...until one day, I did. Enjoy your journey and you will reach the destination.

Absolutely right,@@PetrinaKent. Freedom. There is no shame in "following the black dots". Written music is a wonderful tool for learning new material, but there is no feeling in the world like going off the map, straying off the beaten path a little, to explore your own voice in the music. Playing music with others is a conversation and it is a wonderful thing to learn to 'talk"...to discover what you have to say on your instrument. It's what makes fiddling one of the greatest forms of musical self expression around (my humble opinion.) Meet a new tune. Get to know it. And release yourself into that wonderful space where you allow the tune to tell you how it wants to be played.

@@joyoffiddling No, the woo-ing just means the music is "hot stuff", deserving of congrats and high praise. Listen to other recordings and you will hear other sounds that denote approvale

Well, biggysground, to each his or her own. Every fiddler has their own personal preference for what is "too much" or too few, but we tend to love having our own personal wall of rhythm.
@@joyoffiddling It flew over your head. The video title says "Fiddle Jam" and should have said "Typical Guitar Jam Session." and "Watch the guitar players try to steel the show.." This is what I experienced playing at "get together's" and the main reason I stopped playing them. Your video does a great job in showing exactly that. Yes there is good talent in the fiddle playing here but add 6 or more guitars to the mix (again typical) and this is what you wind up with. I don't know why guitar players get excited and feel the need to play louder than your buddies who are also playing loud. In a song the guitar is used to set the background cords while the fiddle is used to play the main melody, or the players take turns in showing off their talent in the song's arrangement, not playing louder than your buddy to be recognized. Typical and Pathetic!
On the contrary, @biggysground, I understood you clearly. I am very familiar with the sentiment you expressed as I have heard it from some fiddlers before. I am very sorry to hear of the negative encounters you've had at jam sessions. I cannot speak to your personal experience but perhaps I can try again to shed some light on what you see and hear in this particular video. All but one of the pickers at this jam are also fiddlers and all of them understand the role of back up in performance, competition, or jamming. You say above "I don't know why guitar players get excited”. They are excited because that’s what music does. It moves us. It thrills us. We lose ourselves in it and sometimes get carried away by it. I can assure you that none of the pickers in this particular video are in a volume competition with another. They’re simply having a good time. And not only is their enjoyment not an infringement on us fiddlers, it’s contagious. It's a compliment! (We) Fiddlers feed off that vibe. But as I stated in my original reply, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s ok. Again, to each, his or her own. My sincere hope is that you are able to find someone or some folks who can meet your jam session requirements. Music can be very healing. Playing with others should be a source of joy, not frustration and resentment.
@@joyoffiddling :) No resentment here. I played with bands around the country and your video made me laugh as it brought back memories of the past. I can play the violin, the viola, the mandolin and the guitar. Having played jamboree in the hills a few times and meeting a bunch of well knowns in the past has been a blast!

We are in divided times and music brings people together, and although fiddle music has countless different styles, traditions, tastes, in the end we are all fiddlers, pickers, and pluckers, and my hope has always been that we stick together. It's important to remember we all have a very beautiful thing in common...no matter how many guitars might be in the room.
