Social Media Really F**ked Us Up

  • One of the main ways that social media contributes to poor body image is through the constant exposure to idealised and often unrealistic representations of beauty. Social media platforms are filled with images of thin, toned, and seemingly flawless bodies that can create feelings of inadequacy and pressure to conform to those standards.
    Additionally, social media can be a breeding ground for negative comments and bullying related to body size, shape, and appearance. These comments can further exacerbate feelings of self-consciousness and contribute to poor body image.
    Furthermore, social media can create an environment in which people feel the need to constantly compare themselves to others, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.
    Overall, social media has the potential to contribute to poor body image through its emphasis on idealised representations of beauty, the prevalence of negative comments and bullying, and the tendency for users to constantly compare themselves to others.

      @@nif2009 I agree but I also think we should keep the good stuff and get rid of the bad stuff. It should be self correcting. For example we should actually get rid of instagram, tik tok etc. Imho they do far more harm than good. I understand that's some people's brand or business but it's a business that ultimately leads to more societal consequences. Not to mention jobs existed before those apps existed so they are not actually essential. Some entitled kid will just go back to being a normal person with a normal job. If anything that's a good thing. Normal jobs are good.
      We should also get rid of dating apps as well such as tinder, bumble etc. Once again these are causing more societal harm. It harms the way we socialize with one another in society. Porn as well we should get rid of. Its not good for the brain to watch this stuff. Go back to jerking it to a Sears catalogue photo is much healthier imho.

    Once upon a time I used to read the Australian version of Mens Health( what was I thinking) My young son was about 13 at the time and was just getting into fitness as he was training Muay Thai. I sat him him down and showed the ripped Fitness model on the cover and had a frank discussion with him about the unrealistic physique he had and to read on the back ( they always had a little bio of the model) about what the guy ate to look the way he did. The guy lived on a bottle of chemicals and protein. Probably one of the only times as a teenager my son listened to me :Þ An adult now and still trains clean and realistically.

So they'll notice clusters of people with various similar interests ie they watch, comment, click on the same things and the algorithm will learn this and then show other people similar stuff that they haven't see. I’m so glad for having autism, it made me figure out who really cares for me and more important, who I am and where I feel comfortable. People degrade each other not for bad actions, but for being different than their group. I read a book about a boy living in a Burundi neighborhood right when a civil war breaks out and his Tutsi friends urge him to support them to hurt Hutu people, no matter whether what they did. The boy didn’t understand why he had to take part in a horrific war and felt alienated. If people urge you to adapt their ideals, they don’t want you to think for yourself and are your actual enemies, until they realize that they do no good to you and themselves with that mentality. I really hope that everyone will put the wellbeing of anyone’s soul above any culture or ideology.

And while I agree genetics play a huge factor in physique, it would be defeatist to hold this view when diet and physical excercise are just as important and effective in shaping a good physique imo. Important not to be unrealistic if you are naturally skinny and you want to be looking like the rock you will feel letdown but anyone can get in good shape.

    I've got mixed feelings about this.. in a way you are right, because indeed what we can see in social media is unrealistic perception of a great physique, as most of them are enhanced by PEDs. On the other hand however, personally it doesn't really make me feel depressed or worse about my results, which are nowhere near the peoples' I admire. It leads me to the conclusion that "pulling out" yourself from social media and neglecting it completely is not really a solution. What if you will see that elite physique in real life in your gym? Should you avoid looking at it because you might feel bad about your results? I think that's kinda silly. In everyday life, intentionally or not, you will be exposed to things or events that could influence your perception and potentially could make you sad. Based on your experience, knowledge, self-confidence and values you have to be immune to that, so it won't negatively impact you. Many great things in our lives can be achieved by aiming towards "unrealistic expectations". Don't neglect this opportunity to get inspired - even if you will fall a little bit short when trying to achieve that goal, you might still end up with a pretty successful outcome of that journey. Cheers!

    • @sfkeepay
      @sfkeepay ปีที่แล้ว

      I think your argument has merit. But for many, or even most, people, constant (as opposed to occasional) exposure to unreachable goals goes from a source of inspiration to a cause of discouragement, self-doubt, and even despair. It’s the comparison that can be so detrimental, and we’re bombarded by advertising to keep on comparing,endlessly, about everything.
      Your examples seem valid. And without goals, and role models who’ve achieved those goals, it’s pretty hard to even know what’s possible, let alone to work hard for what we want. So I agree with that. But again for most people, those ultimate levels of “success” can never happen. We don’t have a language that really talks about that. And many people end up feeling deficient and despondent. There has to be a balance.
      Very good points though, and they should be incorporated into the overall discussion.
