It can go for Turkish and kazakh speakers. Kazakh can understand Turkish a lot easier than Turkish people trying to understand Kazakh. Same applies with Polish and Czech speakers. The average czech speaker can understand Polish than a Polish person understanding Czech
I had a chat with an Italian colleague of mine at job, he's also having Latin language knowledge (n.r. Latin language is the language spoken by Roman Empire people), The point is Romanian language is one of the 5th inheritors of Latin, along Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and French. So Romanian kept the declination in grammars which give a special type of plurals sometime just like in old Latin. I hope that helps. Cheers.

I believe the closest language to Romanian is Sicilian. I got a book to learn Sicilian and the author said that Romanian is actually closer to Sicilian linguistically than Italian is. A side by side comparison between Sicilian and Romanian would be interesting.
Linguists usually talk of Southern Italian varieties as being the closest. Not one in particular. There are many similarities with Neapolitan. In fact, Neapolitan can explain the schwas or the reduced plurals in -i in Romanian. Some Neapolitan varieties may explain certain sound changes in Romanian. Then some note a lot of almost similar expressions in Pugliese. This is not to diminish from the similarities with Sicilian.
Romanians can very easily learn italian, however we have some words with mostly slavic and maybe dacian influence, maybe 15 - 20 % cant know for sure but that makes it for italians way harder to fully learn romanian :).
Dacian wasn't a written language, they pass knowledge orally and by story telling. @@MrBegliocchi Only Latin is pure Latin 😂 None of the languages are exactly like latin, but it doesn't mean they are not derived from Latin. Example: in other Romance languages you say blanc, blanco for white. In Romanian we say alb. In Latin the word for white was album/alba. Make the differences, sometimes we are more Latin than you :)

Also, many of the words containing an L in Italian turned into words containing an R in Romanian ex. popolo (people) -> popor, that's the reason "miele" in the video turned into "miere".
Intervocalic -L- from words inherited from Latin and Dacian underwent rhotacism and became -R/-R-. But words that were adopted later on did not go through that change so that explains some of the intervocalic Ls in present day Romanian.
i'm Brazilian (portuguese speaker) and i can understand romanian more than italian in some words, but here in my region (Rio Grande do sul) we have a lot of italian and mostly german influences so italian sound more familiar with our dialect of portuguese.

The romans only ruled romania 167 years and they didn't actually completely give us the language like people think. We actually were already Latin speaking nation. This is a very wrong misconception people seem to think we are decendents but there is a lot more than meets the eye. The turks were in control much longer and we don't have Turkish base language, the Roman's conquered many parts of the world and never ever changed the language of the places they conquered and this is also true for romania. We already the dacians had a formed Latin language before the romans and after.
We also have a lot of disimilarities especially with it comes to entire phrases / practical day to day conversation . Make a video of how we say phrases differently. Also it is very difficult for an Italian to learn Romanian but Romanians find it very easy to learn Italian.

Actually is 30% from latin and 30% from french. That's why english is more similar to romance languages than it is to german. English grammar however, have lots of elements from german.

My friends tried to learn romanian, but they just can't. Romanian is the Romance language most similar to Vulgar Latin. Latin had the "tsi" sounds which have been lost in Italian but are still present in Romanian and written as "ț". But of course, Romanian suffered many linguistic influences because its geographical position so that might make it seem like the weirdo of the romance group.

Obviously when I am in Greece I speak English only, but when I hear them, I can get few words here and there thanks to the interaction between Latin and classic Greek. Especially scientific or medical names.
Larry F We do have a stronger accent, but except for the region of Moldova and the Republic of Moldova, it has no relation with Russian whatsoever! Romanian does have Slavic influences but it also encompasses words from Turkish, Greek and even Albanian. However, the most important substrate besides the Latin one (or at least this is the official story) is the Dacian. There are still 15-20% Dacian words.

I can understand when he refers to Romanians finding Italian one of the easier languages for them to learn. Maybe as opposed to vice-versa. Because Italians trying to understand Romanian might comprehend some words, but the syntax might confuse them because of the use of cases that don't exist in Italian. Whereas Romanians can probably understand, or read, Italian more easily because although what's said might sound a bit weird and "drawn out," Romanians could understand it easier as their own speech but with prepositions being used instead of case to explain out the association of the words in the sentence and, as a result, its meaning. (E.g., Her (indirect object) bread (direct object) I (subject) gave, vs. I (subject) gave THE bread TO her, etc.)
It's probably easier because : 1 We have latin sinonims for most used slavic words , that most people know even if they are not used. 2.We had alot of italian television in Romania , I doubt they had any romanian television in Italy. 3.Alot of people left to work in Italy but they return often or speak to their families often and even if it's mostly in romanian I am sure many italian words are exchanged. I am sure italians can understand alot of romanian if it was read or if they heard it spoken slower and with the latin sinonims used more.
Just a small suggestion, if I may: Have them say it separately. It's OK for us watching because you have the written but the pair of them have to re-say it each other to clairify pronunciation and spelling.

I had a chat with an Italian colleague of mine at job, he's also having Latin language knowledge (n.r. Latin language is the language spoken by Roman Empire people), The point is Romanian language is one of the 5th inheritors of Latin, along Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and French. So Romanian kept the declination in grammars which give a special type of plurals sometime just like in old Latin. I hope that helps. Cheers.

I believe the closest language to Romanian is Sicilian. I got a book to learn Sicilian and the author said that Romanian is actually closer to Sicilian linguistically than Italian is. A side by side comparison between Sicilian and Romanian would be interesting.

Romanians can very easily learn italian, however we have some words with mostly slavic and maybe dacian influence, maybe 15 - 20 % cant know for sure but that makes it for italians way harder to fully learn romanian :).
After all, the Romanian language is not called the only eastern romance language for nothing. Plus more eastern influence when it comes to languages.

i'm Brazilian (portuguese speaker) and i can understand romanian more than italian in some words, but here in my region (Rio Grande do sul) we have a lot of italian and mostly german influences so italian sound more familiar with our dialect of portuguese.

Romanian is a earlier iteration of Italian, due to the fact that Romania was a hub of the Roman Empire, part of the "Latins" region.
The romans only ruled romania 167 years and they didn't actually completely give us the language like people think. We actually were already Latin speaking nation. This is a very wrong misconception people seem to think we are decendents but there is a lot more than meets the eye. The turks were in control much longer and we don't have Turkish base language, the Roman's conquered many parts of the world and never ever changed the language of the places they conquered and this is also true for romania. We already the dacians had a formed Latin language before the romans and after.

It's because in Romanian, the articles are in the word that is the object
In the case of the video, the word "casă" means literally "house", although, when we want to say "the house", that "ă" turns into an "a": "casa". This happens in all cases were the word is feminine and ends with -ă.
For example
Baiat: boy
Baiatul: the boy
That "-ul" is used like the "the" in English (for masculine singular words)
In Romanian, there is even a word that end with "-iii", which is "copiii", meaning "the children, the kids", all because the articles, because the word without them would be "copil", "child, kid".

I am from Romania and I dont speak italian but I speak french, wich is more difficult to understand for a native romanian, so I think that for a romanian, italian is very easy for understand after 6 months of studies this language.

Romanian is the Romance language most similar to Vulgar Latin. Latin had the "tsi" sounds which have been lost in Italian but are still present in Romanian and written as "ț". But of course, Romanian suffered many linguistic influences because its geographical position so that might make it seem like the weirdo of the romance group.

Larry F We do have a stronger accent, but except for the region of Moldova and the Republic of Moldova, it has no relation with Russian whatsoever! Romanian does have Slavic influences but it also encompasses words from Turkish, Greek and even Albanian. However, the most important substrate besides the Latin one (or at least this is the official story) is the Dacian. There are still 15-20% Dacian words.

I can understand when he refers to Romanians finding Italian one of the easier languages for them to learn. Maybe as opposed to vice-versa. Because Italians trying to understand Romanian might comprehend some words, but the syntax might confuse them because of the use of cases that don't exist in Italian. Whereas Romanians can probably understand, or read, Italian more easily because although what's said might sound a bit weird and "drawn out," Romanians could understand it easier as their own speech but with prepositions being used instead of case to explain out the association of the words in the sentence and, as a result, its meaning. (E.g., Her (indirect object) bread (direct object) I (subject) gave, vs. I (subject) gave THE bread TO her, etc.)

It's probably easier because : 1 We have latin sinonims for most used slavic words , that most people know even if they are not used.
2.We had alot of italian television in Romania , I doubt they had any romanian television in Italy.
3.Alot of people left to work in Italy but they return often or speak to their families often and even if it's mostly in romanian I am sure many italian words are exchanged.
I am sure italians can understand alot of romanian if it was read or if they heard it spoken slower and with the latin sinonims used more.

Just a small suggestion, if I may: Have them say it separately.
It's OK for us watching because you have the written but the pair of them have to re-say it each other to clairify pronunciation and spelling.
Great language video series. Could you ask your subjects to not speak at the exact same time? I can't seem to hear either one properly when they speak at the exact same time.

In Portuguese "roxo" is the mixture between red and blue. It has the same pronuntiation of Romanian "roșu
" but this late means "red".
