Was Maria a Concubine? | Concubines in Islam series, Part 9 | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Dr. Shabir Ally earlier provided evidence showing that Maria could have been married to the Prophet Muhammad. Now he deconstructs counterarguments demonstrating that Maria was a concubine. He cautions that Maria isn't mentioned in the Quran. He sifts through hadith narratives that say that Maria was enslaved, gave birth to a child and was freed after the Prophet Muhammad died, and he discusses manufactured memories and the need for precedents in the development of Islamic law.

While discussing about reports about Maria, I feel that this episode only touch about how Islamic tradition is actually memory about old times with varying degrees of authenticity. This series already has an episode about it. I was expecting critical examination about the said tradition/seera, but maybe it was too complicated analysis to be put in 10 minutes video, and better reserved for advance students.
... that being said, Dr. Shabir implicitly gives agreement to my current standing, that this is not an essential topic in my life as muslim hence I don't need to put too much burden. I will continue to follow this series as part of academic interest 🙂. Thank you, Dr. Shabir 🙏

The strange thing is that 3 of Prophet wives were war captured, Safiya, Rehana and Jaweriya but as per the resources he married all of them. When it comes to Maria who was not a war captive but a gift from the king of Egypt to show friendliness is considered not married to him but a concubine. This sounds so fishy

In the west, it is okay to have multiple mistresses, to have open relationships, to have live in relationships, to have non-monogamous relationships, to live the swinger lifestyle, throuple relationships etc. and it is all acceptable in society and there is no laws prohibiting any of it. No ones makes a huge fuss about these multitude of relationship dynamics.
Yet, when Islam brings regulation into human relationships by virtue of 1) Marriage 2) Polygamy and 3) Concubinage with clear dos, don'ts and recommendations. All of a sudden, it is how can GOD allow this? how can it be from GOD? etc etc. All of a sudden we are unable to digest and unable to accept and assume high moral authority.
God created the Man and the Woman. He knows more about our sexuality, our psychology, our inclinations, our relationship dynamics, our personalities etc. because he created all of these things. Therefore, he knows better than us, what works for us and what does not work for us. So he is therefore the best rule maker.

I think the position of slave once slept with her master should automatically become his wife.
On the contention that Maria was freed on the death of the Prophet, certainly she was because she was his widow. A woman when married is under the protection of her husband, which therefore ultimately not free from him. The same was the position of Maria.
With this we can maintain the position of zina (no cohabitation outside marriage).

    Assalamualaikum brothers
    I have a request
I saw a video in which a ex muslim says that the Prophet (ﷺ) dictated: 'Not equal among the believers are those who sit and the Mujahidin in the cause of Allah.' He said: 'So Ibn Umm Maktum came and he was dictating to me that he said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah! If I were capable of Jihad then I would participate in Jihad.' And he was a blind a man. So Allah revealed to His Messenger (ﷺ) - while his thigh was against my thigh - and it became so heavy that I was worried it was about to fracture my thigh. Then he was relieved of it, so Allah had revealed to him: Except those who are disabled."
Ex muslim claims that prophet Saw Naoozubilla Naoozubilla made up this verse in favour to that blind man .

I don’t see any issue with Hadith . Allah clear thing when there is doubt. There are a lot of example when shabah ask question about any particular issue in Quran and the prophet just explained it . There was no further revelation . If the prophet had to made up he could have just explained it just like other situations.
There many examples in the bible as well . For example inOT working on sabbath is forbidden and punishable by death . In fact there is story of man killed because he was picking sticks on sabbath. However, jesus took a different approach when he was asked about this issue “
The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath”
So whether someone consider him god or prophet . Didnt he just updated or clarified the ruling on sabbath?.

@@takhtar4877 Bruh, Jesus came thousand years later. Mohammed was “updating” the verse in real time. How are they even comparable?
Jesus as God has the right to set down the true meaning of an institution like the Sabath. Mohammed was amending a revelation that was supposed to be in the “Preserved Tablet”.
What is more likely, that Mohammed got caught and had to make amends to his statements, or that God was adding to what where supposed to be clear revelations?
Recall that in the Hadith, Mohammed had not mentioned the Iddah of prepubescent girls until he was asked by a follower, “What about those who have not yet menstruated?”. Consequently, Surah 65:4 was emended to cover prepubescent girls!
But guess what, this verse is now a problem for Muslims. Mohammed Hijab says the verse is so unclear that it can suggest an extreme form of abuse.
