Did the Prophet Muhammad Marry Maria? | Concubines in Islam series, part 8 | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Dr. Shabir Ally explores arguments that the Prophet Muhammad married Maria. He says that marriage practices were rudimentary, and it wasn't always clear to people if a man had married a woman or taken her as a concubine. The Prophet was instructed to follow the dictates of the Quran as were other Muslims; the Quran says enslaved women should be married off. Moreover, the Quran instructs people to set slaves free, and the Prophet is reported to have encouraged this as well. The Prophet freed two captives of war and they married him. We also know that the Prophet was foremost in doing good. It is more likely that the Prophet would have freed Maria -- if she was even enslaved to begin with -- and married her.

Since Allah says men are not to marry sisters, and Rasulullah gave away one sister, seems like he actually married Maria, as otherwise he could have had both the sisters as slaves

Find me a book older than 150 years that criticized Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. marriage to Hazrat Aisha R.A. or Maria R.A.
This is a very recent thing. 200 years ago they criticized him for giving daughters property rights knowing that daughters have nothing to do with the farmland that the father left, since they're married by the time they're 12-13 yr old. Darwin was labeled as a Muhammadian because he was so "progressive" just like early Muslim scientists. The criticism will change with time.

You think they would let Aisha’s age go if this was not socially acceptable. There are a lot of things about Islam that being in the US, I find atypical such as, slavery.
Before Islam, Mohammad S.A.W. had a slave named Zayd who was gifted to him by his then wife Khadijah. He was abducted as a child elsewhere and was sold at a market and purchased by Khadijah’s nephew. After some time, Zayd’s father and uncle found out the location of the kid and offered everything they had to purchase him back. Prophet refused to take any money and told Zayd that he is free to go if that’s what he wants. Zayd told his father that this man is more of my father than you could’ve ever been and refused to leave prophet’s ownership. Prophet held his hand and as by the law of the time, took him to the steps of kaba and announced that from this day on, this boy is free and he is my son. He will inherit after me and take my name. Most scholars believe that had Zayd not died, he would have most probably been voted as the first khalifah (Islamic political leader and head of then Islamic state).

Of course, the Prophet Mohammed had married with Maria and had gotten a boy named Ebraham (Ebrahim). The lessons we should learn here are:
1 The Prophet in his life is the only source for the explanations and implications of Quran. His behaviours and deeds are the source of the Jurisprudence.
    2. Married with Jaws and Christian is allowed and we have common grandfather is Ebraham.
    3. Married with Slaves is allowed and preferable to elimination this phenomenon that was dominated from the era of ignorance.
Remember Prophet Muhammad has a view number of marriages much less and nothing to mentioned in comparison with all Prophets' marriages mentioned in the Bible. Also it's worth to mention that the Nine marriages of the Prophet they didn't happened at once to say it due to sextual lust, in fact it took separate periods and most of them are older than him, with the aim of rooting good behavior or eliminating a bad phenomenon in society or bringing people's hearts closer and honoring some of the companions killed in the battles and appreciation to their sacrifices to including their families to the house of prophecy. There is another reason, which is documenting the jurisprudence of women after the death of the Prophet, such as the example of his marriage to Mrs. Aisha, may God be pleased with her.

To make a romantic image, one could say that the beginning of Islam started in the arms of a woman Khadija and ended in the arms of another woman Fatima.

      Slavery was necessary, dumb.
Today we have modern technology but in past we didn’t have.
The war before modern civilization was based on man power.
Empire power depends on How much you have men.
The bigger empire the bigger chance to survive..
When you wage war against some empire you have to kill all the enemy men to win war..
When you kill almost all the men in war then only women are left.
What you gonna do with a big amount of women in empire?
      You have 3 option
      1.kill them
      2.Spare them
      3.Enslave them.
If you kill all women you are cruel.
If you spare womens they will make a small group to rebel Against you or join your enemy, then the enemy will get bigger.
Then you will be annihilated by your enemy..
So you have only option that enslave them..
But the muslim slavery and Other society slavery aren’t same...
Because in islamic slavery you have to feed them what you eat,you have to give clothes what you wear, you can't beat them, you cant torture them, you can't prostitute them, you have to fulfill her desires, basically its like a family member.
There are multiple verse in Quran to free slave.
If the master die, the slave is automatically free.
If the slave gives a child, the child is free..
That's why you will see in islamic empire many slaves were king..
So automatically if you take slave, You have took care of her/his like family member.
The "slave" word doesn’t fit in islamic slavery.. Rather it should be family memeber.
The slave master relationship in Islam is better than brahmin and shudra relationship..

In Surah Al-Ahzab, there are seven rules about marriage peculiar to the Prophet.
Four of these granted him relaxations and three put restrictions; and while the Prophet certainly abided by the restrictions, we know from some reports that he did not opt to benefit from two of the relaxations. You can read the detail explanation in Ma'arif Al-Qur'an Translated by Muhammad Shamim (Karachi: Maktaba-e-Darul Uloom) Vol.7, 191-200.

    • @nooriarizvi3279

Because by that time the verse was released the prophet already had more than 4 wives and after this verse even he wasn’t allowed to marry anymore according to the Quran (excluding what his right hand possessed) he did not marry anyone else after this verse and on top of that his existing wives could never be remarried even if they got divorced so he couldn’t divorce them either after this verse he only married what his right hand possessed
“Not lawful to you, [O Muhammad], are [any additional] women after [this], nor [is it] for you to exchange them for [other] wives…” (33:52)
And the timing may have been right as well because the prophet was responsible for spreading Islam and he mainly did this by marrying for business reasons also all of his wives were divorcees or widows besides Aisha RA and he was monogamously married to his first wife for 25 years until she died

pretty hard to accept if these stories are true, and marrying a child of six, "consummating" the marriage
when she's still playing with dolls, does not present M in a very flattering light. This troubles a lot of believers and rightly so. Some Shia scholars have even suggested that Aiisha was responsible for M's death. Scoring points and making childish comparisons, is debasing the subject and does not add to knowledge. All faiths are sacred and need our utmost respect. It's clear God sent numerous "messengers" and religion needs to be seen as a continuum. The purpose of which
is to guide us how to coexist in peace with fellow human beings. My remarks I repeat were for Dr Shabir's attention only. The subject is quite complicated and yes needs to be seen in context. I suspect it needs comprehensive study of why and how things evolved. Presenting it in short bursts does not satisfy my objections. It's good to be critical and question. @@sau2949 you should know by now 2 of his concubines wanted to be his wife(one of them even cried),and all the four were let go after his death, and yes they were slaves but they were treated a lot better than what slavery you saw in history(In Islam you can't even hit a slave let alone starve him and overwork him) plus there's a contract for freedom anyway and a Muslim should never reject it,So why didn't his concubines never even uttered about the contract? and you can't use fear as your argument here because then the other 2 concubines wouldn't have asked for marriage(plus Rayhanna(ra) crying when the Prophet (saw) divorced and happy when he took her back, now a person in fear wouldn't do that right?) and considering the fact that in this list his NURSE MOTHER is there absolutely screams this list is not authentic. And if your curious why slavery wasn't demolished is because when you go to war,you leave everything and when you lose, you have no where to go sometimes because often people got left behind,if you get into a new city and are not under anyones supervision, you are more likely to get blackmailed and abused or even murdered,In order to nor treat slaves like animals, many strict rules were put in Place and enforced upon the owner, plus when your a new citizen you don't get a citizenship immediately.

do not lie please ! mohammad not marry Maria

  • @msstar7109
    @msstar7109 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

This doesn’t make sense, Any woman taken as captive technically is forced to marry or was threatened in some way has no choice to have a better life. How do you know she choose that option. Secondly, him saying they were married when he wasn’t married to her from the beginning but was with her physically and eventually did wife her. And ironically this was during the time when his Wife Hafsa caught him with her I’m assuming being intimate. She told his secrets to the other wives which of course caused them to be moody at him, and then he then declared the new verse in the Quran that he can punish them by not sleeping with them for one month or they will go to hell etc for not keeping their husband pleased or whatever, Within that time he was with Maria and even Had a son with her perhaps to wind up his other wives even more. Who knows the way he explains it isn’t deep in the roots, it sounds more like a man with sexual needs. He had multiple wives and the ones he had were not enough. Maria was known as beautiful so he tried to conquer her and all the other woman that were shared across the Muslim men when they were captured and their families were killed. That is not realistic to say they all agreed to marry those men. So you need to maybe wake up abit and apply more logic

7 th. Century Arabia was like or maybe worst than the Wild Wild West with Islam being the only safe heaven. Freeing slaves marrying freed slaves with their buy in ie no force causing oppression was the best that any women would hope for being women had no rights outside the fold of Islam. The respect islam provided to women was the first of its kind with many liberties when coming to a woman. Please research academically to see the beauty of islam slowly bit surely wiping out slavery. Marrying, freeing expiating sins, respect and rights of not overburdening slaves, feeding same food as the masters, clothing same quality clothes as the owner etc. Many slaves did not want to go free when under rich muslim masters. Not knowing where to go and how to survive they wanted to stay as slaves having roof over, food and clothing and much more.
We tend to see things with 21 st century lens and not having or understanding of the 8 th century arab society and its brutality with harshness of desert life tend to not grasp the reality, many making nonsensical comments not baring feom calling names and slandering the Prophet pbuh of Allah. Whatever the Prophet pbuh could have not been wrong as all of his actions related to deen were per command and guidance of Allah well within the allowed bounds from the Creator of the Worlds!
Pls think and ponder before uttering nonsensical comments. Prophet pbuh was sent by God as a mercy to mankind. Also do not think and say y this or that but remember we r the servants of Allah and Gods will is going to be done here on earth as it is in heavens. Allah has blessed and preferred mankind over many of his creatures. Remember not all creatures but the Quran states “many”. Still whatever whoever is the best of all is still the servant of God including us and the entire creation including all creatures. Simple! No more and no less! Period is it! Fin!
