      I have the same car, T5 R-Design. Thing is, since I can afford this car then I shouldn’t be worrying about fuel economy. But since it uses premium unleaded, gas mileage gets a bit stiff if you drive around the city a lot which my wife does and she drives this one more than I do. When I do get back on the road after the enforced work from home is over, then I’ll see if I have to worry or not.

      Far to expensive, small back doors, no android auto as Volvo want £300 here in the UK for it !!! What a joke but that sums up the whole car for me everything is an expensive option even more so the GERMAN brands and those orange carpets will get Soooooo dirty in no time. I have just chosen the Peugeot 3008 over this car after driving both and adding up their standard kit ,the Peugeot won hands down.

    I drove a XC40 2023 with the Google infotainment. The steering felt more balanced in the firm setting, but it still had no feeling. Also the autonomous systems didn’t bug me once. I was surprised having heard so many negative things about how intrusive they are. The only time I felt its presence was when it emergency braked in reverse to stop me going back into a hedge, which I did want to nudge to clear more space for cars passing by ahead.

    It's not hard to applause the efforts of Autogefühl, but still I truly appreciate the great level you maintain. As for pricing Volvo's never came cheap, and where I live, you can basically put a 0 at the end, and that will then be more than €70000 for this otherwise €57000 car.

    Thomas, thank you as aways for your great reviews! From a seating perspective, of the smaller mid-size to compact SUVs (e.g. Xc40-60 sizes) , which do you like for a tall drive. I like a flatter seating position like you. I'm 6'6'' and I rarely fit in most smaller to midsize SUVs, but I live in LA and prefer a smaller for print and more sustainable mpg. Thanks as always!

Also 20-inch and even 21-inch rims are available for the Volvo XC40 ;) About the ignition, you have to press the Start button from about 3 sec to have all the electronics available. By the way, you can adjust the sensibility of the assistant system like emergency braking. Cheers from Spain

    Really interesting how the XC40 mirrors the Skoda Yeti story from 10 years ago: i.e. a dynamically excellent car that won enormous praise from the motoring journalists for the quality of the drive and particularly brave design of cool “boxy” styling. Unfortunately, here in the UK boxy styling means that only people over the age of 65 buy the car and it becomes very uncool! I say this with experience because I bought one of the first Yetis in the UK. It was a great car but people joked that I must have borrowed it from my elderly father! I like the XC40 but have ordered a BMW X2 instead because I do not want to repeat my misjudgment!

    Very good review, and I can add that sound insulation from road noice is not that good in this car from what I have heard. Apparently studded tires are really loud and if you live somewhere where you need that in the winter it is good to keep in mind.
    I also always get shocked how expensive Volvos are down on the continent. €57K for this car?! In Sweden a fully loaded XC40 T4 R-design is the equivalent of around €46,5K. That said the SEK is very low right now, but I still don't understand why the price differ so much.

    Am catching up after being away, lots of Autogefuhl to watch - great! Many thanks Thomas. 20:04 agree: I do not like a sudden AEB alarm, and it frightens passengers unnecessarily when you're trying to drive calm. Ironically Volvo always has pushed 'safety' (though 'safety' is related to the driver); however BLIS, a good feature, is not standard, but an expensive option!

    Hi Thomas, a bit not about volvo but still :).
    In your opinion what do you prefer more for Tiguan 2WD DSG 1.5 TSI engine or 2.0 TDI (as both of them are 150hp):)? Is it enought 1.5, and also isnt the consumption are too high for 1.5 ?

    Another excellent and detailed car review. I drive a D4 R Design and I generally like it. It has 20” alloys and don’t find it uncomfortable on the dreadful UK roads.
    There is quite a lot of tyre noise though (Pirelli P Zero’s) so it’s not the most relaxing cruiser on the motorways to my ears. Emergency braking is a pain at times as you’ve noticed but when it’s needed it is excellent. I’ve turned off the lane assistance aid as it’s a pain to have to fight the steering just to switch lanes without indicating!
    Acceleration is anaemic in Comfort setting so I switch out of it immediately when I drive the car.
    You can store the rear parcel shelf underneath the boot floor which is very useful and means you don’t have to leave it behind if you remove it like I do to accommodate my dogs.
    Overall, I like it. The car drives well and has some great design touches. It’s large enough for me me yet manoeuvrable enough to be able to drive and park easily. Fuel economy could be better however.

      Thanks! Let me get in detail about that. Honestly, a) I don't care at all which brand is from which country. Germany has good things to offer, but we also do a lot of shit (e.g. raise 13 million pigs per year just to - literally - make them so sick that we throw them in the trash). So I am not a "proud German". So tbh it makes me very disappointed when someone claims that just because I live in Germany, I would favor German cars. Maybe I should have claimed at some point that I was born in Poland, so people could just claim I favor Polish cars - and there are none ;-)
      Plus, another point: So many "German" cars we present are not even built in Germany. Take all the BMW SUVs (except X1 and X2). So if those are BMWs but are built in the USA, would I be biased towards ... which country? ;-)

Dont get me wrong, i have a BMW, and its a great car to drive, but not that well built in its interior, or "material quality". I also had an Honda Civic Hybrid, and it was flawless and with at least as good materials in general, which being a lot cheper car is strange. I subbed the Honda now for the new V60 R-design, and it just made my opinion stronger. BMW great cars to drive and have fun with... quality wise...not that strong. Your complaints about the gear selector are misguided. Let's compare the XC40's gear selector to a traditional selector.
    XC40
    Drive: Double-click the lever back.
    Reverse: Double-click the lever forward.
    It doesn't matter which position (P, N, R/D) you're coming from.
    Traditional gear selector
    Drive: Step 1 - press and hold the release button. Step 2 - move the lever three, two or one notch(es) back from P, R or N, respectively. (On many cars, If you simply pull all the way back, you end up in low gear instead of D.)
    Reverse: Step 1 - press and hold the release button. Step 2 - move the lever back one notch from P; or move the lever forward one or two notches from N or D, respectively.
    Both require two steps. The XC40 is simpler and faster. D and R can be easily selected entirely by touch with one finger. Traditional gear levers have to be moved more slowly to avoid overshooting the desired position, require more physical effort and cannot be safely operated entirely by touch.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure which cars you have tested, but this gear lever system was criticized not only by me, but from all other journalists I know who have driven the car. Most automatic shifting levers I know allow to jump over N with just pulling the lever a little further, and that's the easiest way. If you measure the time you need to maneuver the vehicle front and back and front and back again, the XC40 will miss out on a few seconds. So from all cars, the worst automatic shifting lever systems I have experienced are in the XC40 and in the Cadillac Escalade. In Mercedes e.g., you pull the lever at the steering wheel all the way down and are in D. Pull it all the way up, you are in R. At Audi, pull the central shifting lever all the way back you are in the D. All the way front you are in R. Etc. Could name numerous of other examples. In 90 % of other vehicles, it is easier and faster. I guess you own a XC40 and found it good?

      ..I drive my xc40 T4 inscription since 8 month and once you get use the gear selector is very easy...for example my dad with my vw with dsg he never wanted to take the car because for the automatic gear ....with xc40 he said that is simple to drive...then is not worst is simply done in a different way...maybe easier imho.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback! Just to be clear: The automatic gear box itself is great, I am just referring to that they didnt include a function to skip/jump over N gear which doesnt make sense to me, as in 99 % of daily use, a customer would never put the car to neutral.

    • @theotalma9063
      @theotalma9063 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a shift by wire system. R, N and D aren't physical positions of the lever. Unlike a traditional gear selector, you do not shift into N on the way to R or D.
      For example, a double-click backward is the command for D. The computer then puts the transmission directly into D. If you single-click back, pause, then single-click back once more, you end up in N because you issued two commands for N instead of the double-click for D.
      The lever doesn't have a shift lock and can be moved freely at all times. A single-click command for R or D would be a safety issue. Furthermore, regulations require that N be positioned logically between R and D.

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many other manufacturers have shift by wire already and you do not need 2 steps from D to R and back, although they have N in the middle. No idea why Volvo didnt do that

    Excellent review as usual. I like the exterior design a lot. Even though its a small SUV, it got a very nice stance and it looks muscular. I do not like button-less dashboards; difficult to operate while driving. Petty of the suspension stiffness, very good advice to go for the normal suspension. These type of cars should not have sports wheels. I prefer more tire wall hight; more comfort, and also great to handle sidewalk scrapes better...

Und die Generation, die sich einen Volvo leisten kann, möchte nicht streamen oder brennen, ich zumindest nicht.

    It's funny he thinks 50 000 euros is expensive living in a country with mainly Audis, BMWs, Mercedes and Porsches on the roads. While in American, Brittish, Australian etc reviews it's considered decently priced. This is a compromise car hence for example the carpet like door panels and foot space to make it more accessable, in other words budget. But of course it's still a premium car in it's core so adding them options up and it gets more expensive go figure. The XC40 is a more reasonable entry Volvo with the possibilities to go full premium for those who can affort it.
