"Old school" is cool school. This still sounds fresh and vibrant 55 years later. In the '60s, teen or 20-something artists made very cool music for other young people. That's why it holds up and doesn't come across as stale.

On youtube there is a video of Jefferson Airplane on the Dick Clark show singing White Rabbit first then a brief intervew followed by Somebody to Love and another short interview. White Rabbit was loved by hippies and acid heads and Somebody to Love was loved by EVERYONE. It hit a note with anyone that lost love at any time in their lives. Bear in mind this was the 60's.
Watch them play and bow to the most poweful natural female voice that ever existed for popular listening. Miss Grace Slick. You've done the reaction so find and watch for yourselves.

Love Jefferson Airplane. A lot of their music feels like it's coming out of some dark dimension that can only be accessed by drugs, It's like the Doors that way. The guitarist for the Airplane is Jorma Kaukonen,a really great blues guitarist. Very unique sound. He and Jack Casady (bass player for the Airplane) went on to form Hot Tuna which is an interesting group, but perhaps not for everyone.

You're diving deep into 'The Summer of Love" (1967) and the hippie Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco scene. This was written by singer Grace Slick's brother-in-law, Darby Slick. Jefferson Airplane also sang Go Ask Alice. It eventually evolved into Jefferson Starship, and then Starship, and had hits in every version. I miss those days. Thanks for playing this.

All electric guitars here. Jorma's primary guitar in Airplane was the Gibson ES 345. Jorma and Jack (bass genius!) have been together since high school and still play together in Hot Tuna (Jorma now in his 80s and Jack late 70s). Grace Slick was one of the few female lead vocalists in bands of the day, along with Janis, and she could go toe to toe with the guys! Such a powerful voice!! Four lead vocalists in the band, Grace and Marty Balin primarily, with Paul Kantner and Jorma Kaukonen. This is another band with a huge catalog! "Crown of Creation" "3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds" (live, from "Bless it's Little Pointed Head") "Eskimo Blue Day" anything from the "Volunteers" album, "The Farm" is a favorite of mine along with "Wooden Ships" "We Can be Together" "Good Shepherd". Fabulous album! The very first Jefferson Starship album, "Blows Against the Empire" is a psychedelic masterpiece and should be consumed entirely and often! Garcia, Crosby, Nash, Billy K, Mickey Hart, Frieberg, etc. are onboard The Starship for blastoff. It's a DO NOT MISS album! Want a great, totally different, sleeper song from Airplane, it's Jorma's finger picking masterpiece "Third Week in The Chelsea"! Jorma and Grace on vocals. Outstanding!

Smoking was done everywhere. Right at the dinner table, living room, t.v. shows etc. Smoking cigarettes did not become addressed until the 90's to what is practiced today. In the sixties you were always near someone smoking cigarettes. My High School had a smoking area. I graduated in 75'.

Old hard rockers called this kinda guitar sound "jingley-jangley!" It's electric guitar but with a bit of overdrive rather than full on distortion and often played on a semi hollow-body.

Grace Slick is one of my favorite female singers. Some other songs she wrote (her brother-in-law wrote this) and sang lead on are 1) Law Man, 2) Better Lying Down, 3) Eskimo Blue Day, 4) Two Heads (very psychedelic), and 5) Rejoyce.

Brad, just about every company today that builds amplifier’s, tries to replicate those of the early 60’s, however there are exceptions with solid state circuitry. That vintage sound is very important to many bands. When it comes to guitars, there are really no electric guitars that sound like acoustic guitars, so if it sounds like an electric, it most likely is. There are electric acoustic guitars, but they sound like acoustic guitars, just amplified!

For Brad's question about electric/acoustic guitars: Jorma Kaukonen was playing lead on an Epiphone Riviera, a thin (shallow) 6-string semi-hollowbody electric guitar he used a lot during the Jefferson Airplane days, and the rhythm parts were played by Paul Kantner on a Rickenbacker 360/12 which was a 12 string electric guitar made famous by George Harrison of The Beatles and Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, and also by Pete Townshend on the 67-68 The Who recordings. It gives a very interesting thick treble-heavy jangly sound that works really well when the amp is distorted a little bit. I do not know what amp setup they were playing through, but I bet if you emailed Mr. Kaukonen, he'd be happy to tell you.
"Psychedelic" is pretty much the term for this band. They were one of the inventors of the genre.

Jefferson Airplane was an amazing live band. They were one of the few to play both Woodstock and Altamont, which was the infamous concert where Hells Angels did security and a man was murdered. Also, they knocked out the lead singer. Grace Slick was such a great and raw vocalist. If you listen to their performance of “Saturday Afternoon “ at Woodstock, it is mesmerizing and way better than the recorded version.

I used to work with the physically disabled. One of the guys got tickets for an 'oldies' show being recorded as a PBS special. I was chosen to be his escort. We were part of the studio audience. Peter Noone was the MC. From what I was told, I was expecting a show full of doo-wop and 50's groups. After recording some clips for the show introduction with on demand audience applause, the director turned to this bunch of old guys and a young woman setting up on stage, and asked if they wanted to do their set early, since they were already set up. They agreed. After a few minutes Peter Noone steps up to the mike and says, "Ladies and Gentelman, I'd like to introduce a band from the 60's, 70's and 80's... Jefferson Starship!" I couldn't believe what I had just heard. They broke into Somebody to Love, the first song in their set, and I lost it. Grace Slick wasn't there, but the young woman singing was channeling Grace Slick energy. The band was kicking sonic ass. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. I'll never forget the night I got paid to see an iconic band that played at Woodstock.

The song that made Grace Slick a star. She had been a replacement (the original singer, Signe Andersson, got pregnant and couldn't go on tour), but this song made everyone forget about Signe.
It was written by Grace's ex-husband, Darby Slick. It might have upset Darby to see Grace date multiple people in the group (she eventually married Paul Kantner, the rhythm guitarist) but, hey, he's probably made a LOT of money from the publishing rights, so…
You should do anything from their Woodstock show. "Volunteers" or "Wooden Ships", especially.

Originally recorded by the great society grace slick and brother in law Darby slick. Grace brought it over to the Jefferson airplane.
Lead guitarist is Jorma Kaukonen who says he used a guild thunderbird, rythem guitar is Paul katner playing a Rickenbacker. These brands were used by a number of psychedelic bands for their sound. Rickenbackers supposedly had a jingle jangle sound. The byrds even used that line in a song.
By the way Jorma Kaukonen is underated as a guitarist and people forget him as an airplane member. He started a band called hot tuna after airplane. Great jazz influenced stuff. Still playing today.
Also if you were in a basement or club with this playing it was probably a different kind of cigarette, and drinks were spiked with something other than alcohol.
