As a British working class lad aged 11 when this came out, I could instantly identify with it. I think what it shows is how culturally and time related music is. It's born from the culture of the musicians from that time and place.
Attitudes, sense of humour, irony, fashion,... may perhaps be "culturally and time related". Music not so much. A good composition from the 1970s (or the 1600s) still works today. Good music is good music.
I grew up in N.E. England, late '70s to early '80s, working class. I'm Jewish, now residing in Israel for the last 40 years and servicing the local manufacturing industry, centered in the Haifa Bay area. Hard working decent people are the backbone of sociaty, the economy and are the creators of tangible wealth, turning raw material to finished products. I'm blue collar and flat cap for life.
Brad got this right - its just a fun, catchy song. One of my favorite memories of this song - I remember about 15-20 years ago, I went to buy a sandwich from this local bakery. There were about 5 or 6 people in back doing baking bread, making sandwiches, etc. Then this song comes on, and ALL of the employees start to sing along and you can tell they all just loved this song. It was great.
As soon as you play Baggy Trousers the next song has to be the slow version (Madness - Le grand pantalon) they did for the Kronenbourg 1664 'Slow the Pace' advert. The contrast from the young youthful band to the old men in a band is very good.
This song is from 1983 and Madness is from the UK. I remember they used play this music video a lot on MTV when it was new in the 1980s and yes I've heard it on a tv commercial recently.
It’s a nostalgic celebration of London working class family life, set to a ska beat. Ska (with Reggae) was originally Jamaican and came to the U.K. with immigrants. It was first popular in the late 60s and particularly in the working class London depicted. “Madness” were part of the late 70s/early 80s revival, particularly on the “Two-Tone” label. The use of brass instruments by many of the groups was a conscious reference to the musics origins with Jamaican “Show Bands” in the early 60s.
I love this song! It is so nostalgic for me. Pure 80s goodness. "In the middle of our street" is different in UK English. They mean that they had the middle house on the block, but they say "in" instead of "on" over in the UK.
@@gmunden1 yeah my musical tastes were pretty much shaped by the post-punk and new wave stuff that you could find on MTV. I wouldn't have told you that when I was 21, but you realize these things as you get older. And I'm totally OK with it lol.

It's a fond recollection of the house in which the narrator grew up. There's no hidden meaning. "Our mum is so house proud, nothing slows her down and a mess is not allowed".

The first song I remember hearing by Madness was One Step Beyond. It opened the world of Ska to me. Our House is relatable to anyone who grew up in a working class neighborhood and experienced the 'everydayness" of life; every family member had their role and you were expected to follow it. Near the end of the song there is a line that really brings forward the feeling of pride and safety you felt at home..."Our house was our castle and our keep."

This is early 80's music, and it is what I listened to as a teenager. Madness is a British band that was very big in Western Europe (where I grew up) during the 80s. It was one of my favorite bands at the time. In the early to mid-80s, there were a lot of genres of music that morphed into cult-like movements with fans dressing and acting the part. You had Anarchists, Punk-rockers, Teddy Boys, Rockabillies, Skinheads, Poppers, Motts, etc. Each had their own genre of music, dress code, rules, and political leanings. Most groups fought against one another, and I remember epic street battles in Berlin during that time. Crazy times.
You've got it, Brad - it's about living an ordinary life in an ordinary house in some very ordinary times... and how extraordinary that could be. It's catchy coz it's SKA!
Madness was part of the second great British invasion of bands from the '80s; loved this song back in the day! This video got a lot of airplay in the early years of MTV (back when they actually played music videos). And it's not a joke, it's just a sweet little fun song about their family home where they grew up.
They are British (you can tell by the accents, c’mon guys!🤦🏼♂️) and its early 80s. Some working class Brits weren’t into disco or polished sounding American pop/rock and so this sort of sound emerged which people identified with. Personally I wasnt into them but they had a couple of fun hits back then.
At the our Queens last Jubilee 10 years ago, this video was shone onto Buckingham Palace. The group sang it live as well. (I live in Yorkshire, England.)
Madness was one of the best Two-Tone (early 80's) Ska bands. You guys should really do a deep dive into their music. Check out One Step Beyond and Night boat to Cairo!
I think it's an homage to their home & upbringing and Britishness, in a way too - there are obvious references to Monty Python- Madness were one of the main 80's bands bringing Ska to the wider public, me included. They were just a lot of fun...good memories!
Those of us who were there saw Madness grow from a bunch of lads playing at pop music to becoming some of the best songwriters and musicians of their generation. It was fantastic. _Our house_ and _Tomorrow's just another day_ and _Wings of a dove_ clever, foot-tapping, singalong pop songs. Brilliant.
Madness aka the nutty boys......crazy video to unique pop songs absolutely loads of uk hits... most fun i had was playing their hit Night Boat To Cairo ....at a wedding where the groom was a rugby lad... all his team mates were in tuxes dancing.... really funny
The great thing about madness is their sound was theirs alone, and they're fantastic live, so when they get to perform at whatever event or festival is going on they're still incredibly good.
Madness the definitive sound of the 1980's so many great artists during this period, Elton John, The Police, U2, Madness, George Michael, David Bowie to name but a few.
Elton John was definitely not the highlight of the 80s hahaha, there you were confused, that he continued making songs and had his audience because Elton John was already a legend that's fine, but in the 80s there were new artists and bands that made much better songs that he.
Part of a movement called "Two Tone", most of the bands were integrated ska bands. These guys and their spin offs were massive world wide. Late 70's into the 80's. Specials, Madness, The Selector
Several British bands have done catchy little songs about where they grew up... Madness kind of specialized in kind of silly songs with very odd videos. When I grew up our house was also in the middle of our street... the middle of a row of terraced houses. We all knew a house where something was always happening and usually quite loud. As teenager we would gather in that house as kids do, we played music and ate toast.
I love Madness and Suggs. Born in 77, so they remind me of my childhood. My favourite Suggs song is actually a collab with Audio Bullies called 'This Road'. Only an album track, but it really resonates with me. Suggs actually used some iconic lines from The Great Gatsby in his lyrics. Very subtle and cleverly done.
This was always a funny video to me. The band portrays a working-class family. They perform with their instruments in the living room, as they prepare for work and school. The family play squash and relax in a hot tub. The brother get ready for his date. The sighing in sister's sleep. Mom kicking out kids 😂. Back then my uncle looked like a Mexican version of the singer😂 they had the same facial expressions too. Weird.
You may be interested that Madness were part of a British Scene (along with other bands) called the " Two-Tone Movement". ( 1978- ) They were heavily influenced by Rocksteady, Ska and Reggae which they had been exposed to from the Carribbean immigrant communities in the English cities.
Just a fun song from the 80's Britain.... about their house in the middle of the street and aren't we lucky to have a house with a busy family, no matter how rich or poor we are. memories. ...
The late 70s early 80s UK Ska revival!!!!!!!!!! now ur cookin with Gas. Madness, The Specials, The Selector, The Beat, Bad Manners, The Body Snatchers.....the whole Album Dance Craze still blows my mind with its quality.
I love this song! Madness is a British band from the eighties! This was a huge hit in 1983! It reminds me of growing up with mom and dad and 5 siblings and our house was in the middle of our street! ❤️❤️
Madness were 1 of the Top 4 British Bands in late 70s and early 80s leading the Ska revival with “two-tone ska”. Our House is from their 4th Studio album & was released NOV 1982.
Madness was a British Ska Pop band formed in 1976, debuted in 1979, and more or less bisbanded in 1986, but came back in the late 90s, to put out a handful of new albums thru the 2000s into 2016. This song here, "Our House" was the first B-side track oh their 3rd album "7" from 1981. It was one of the early hits on MTV back in the day, but it didn't get much airtime, but the song itself got a decent amount of radio airplay. As I watch this video, I don't think I ever saw the video, because by the time I really got into MTV in like 1983, it was already out of rotation. Well, yeah, because we didn't get cable until 1983, so I missed the first couple of years of MTV. So a lot of those early 80s music videos I missed. It wasn't until Michael Jackson's Thriller album that MTV really blew up in popularity.
I once read a review about this wonderful Madness song that said something like: "It's because of songs like "Our house" that, if you don't enjoy listening to music, you don't know how to enjoy life"
Madness are still huge here in the UK, they've been headlining festivals this summer. A great catalogue of catchy songs about everyday working people and an amazing live act that gets everybody signing and dancing.
Great band! Got to hang with them for an afternoon at the Tower Records I was working at in AZ, probably in early 83 when that single took off (their only US Top 10). They were there for an "In-Store" appearance, autograph records etc before the concert that night (Rise and Fall Tour I think). I was the Import, Reggae, International, Electronics, etc buyer ("Leftovers"), even blank cassettes, etc. and I'd been a fan/promoter since 79/80, so I was happily picked to be the store lead for them, take the pics, chat during the slow times etc. Boy, do I still miss record stores. This isn't my favorite cut of theirs, especially at the time but it's a great song nonetheless. Brad & Lex, you've gotta play something from their earlier Ska and Nutty Sound dance days! "One Step Beyond" would do nicely 🙂 Back in 79/80 when I first heard them and The Specials on import singles, then their 1st album import and "finally" the 1st record released in the US in 80, they were a ton of fun and they got played a lot in-store by a couple of us (in all of the stores I worked at, whoever was working the register shift, had absolute control over the turntable, except of course for customer requests, so we were able to "promote" the people/groups we liked. The sorta New Wave and Ska/Two-Tone look was black and white (thin black ties/white shirts) and the One Step album artwork and look were the same, black and white. The record company promo stuff for the band was amazing! Collecting/wearing promo badges/pins was a big thing and the pins for that album were the best ever. Never saw another set like it during the next 5 yrs. On the back of that album there are 16 photos around the edges of them plus one in the front. The US distributors (Epic/Columbia? Island?) went all out with all 17 pics put on individual buttons. I was so jazzed when I got a full set instead of the normal one or two. Ha! Had them for years but too many moves. Oh well. Great days and years. I've gone on way too long reminiscing but hearing this after a bunch of years while you guys hear for the first time triggered a waterfall of 40+ year old memories. Also, I Love what and how you guys approach all these "new" sounds. Anyways, I thought I'd end with part of an article/interview with them over in the UK pretty soon after they were signed by Stiff Records (HA! What a Label!!) that gives an idea of what can be found in a lot of that 1st album: Dance! "We’ve had punk and funk pub rock and disco. We’ve got mod and ska. So what’s next then? Get ready for the ‘nutty sound’ of Madness! What’s that ya say? ’Aven’t seen Madness yet? Where have you been reader. It’s the Hope and Anchor tonight. So humid that even the walls are sweating and a heat haze hangs over the seven incredibly energetic performers. Odd mixed bunch the audience. Punks and students and mods and skins. And they’re all dancing [*that was big! These groups usually spent their time fighting each other*] in spite of the risk of annihilation by evaporation. It’s not surprising though ‘cos this is the purest form of dance music that I’ve heard in many a long gigging session. It’s totally irresistible...." And it still is!!!

This is just a good vibe. Like a cheer up song. Like the music is saying, "Hey, lighten up 😄"
I can remember Madness playing on the Young Ones tv show, ohh those were the days!
this is one of those early 80's hit
Madness from over 40 years ago, classic British band, loads of great tunes from this band, late 70’s and 80’s best times ❤
This modern song is from 1982. The song is used in several TV commercials.
this song was played many times over on MTV in the early 1980's
The great thing about madness is their sound was theirs alone, and they're fantastic live, so when they get to perform at whatever event or festival is going on they're still incredibly good.
Good Reaction to a classic and humourous London, England Band of The 1980s.
They once played in front of 500,000 in Brazil😀.
Madness was one of my favorites ska bands. Of the song is from the '80s it's been on commercials TVs movies you name it it was their biggest hit.
Loved these guys in the early 80s. They were a Ska band that, like in this song, dabble in New Wave. One Step Beyond is another great one.
One of the most fun songs of my childhood.
Yessssss fun, silly and very catchy!!! Ahhh the memories!!
Part of a movement called "Two Tone", most of the bands were integrated ska bands. These guys
and their spin offs were massive world wide. Late 70's into the 80's. Specials, Madness, The Selector
Dont forget Buster Bloodvessel😜....that would be bad manners😛
That fat bass line mate, bangin
Maxwell House coffee is what you’re thinking of. They used the chorus of this for their commercial for like 20 years
Several British bands have done catchy little songs about where they grew up...
Back then as kids on our estate we were all into Madness and The Specials
This was always a funny video to me. The band portrays a working-class family. They perform with their instruments in the living room, as they prepare for work and school. The family play squash and relax in a hot tub. The brother get ready for his date. The sighing in sister's sleep. Mom kicking out kids 😂. Back then my uncle looked like a Mexican version of the singer😂 they had the same facial expressions too. Weird.
Their song House of Fun has some good lyrics, and is a cracking tune too.
I wonder if they will work it out.
@@AlmosttheGoodlife I only recently learnt what is was about! 😉
Agreed!
A song about buying condoms. 😄
You may be interested that Madness were part of a British Scene (along with other bands) called the " Two-Tone Movement". ( 1978- ) They were heavily influenced by Rocksteady, Ska and Reggae which they had been exposed to from the Carribbean immigrant communities in the English cities.
The thing with Madness is they’re music was always good fun. To my mind, they never really took themselves too seriously.
To this day you will see the Madness logo tattooed on many cool guys n gals...Ska is a way of life!
@@SEANBANOG4 spirit of 69
Madness went another route away from 2tone/Ska after their first album and went pop on us.
I love this song! Madness is a British band from the eighties! This was a huge hit in 1983! It reminds me of growing up with mom and dad and 5 siblings and our house was in the middle of our street! ❤️❤️
Brad's explanation is right, just goofing off singing about ordinary life. 👍👍👍can't think too much into it
Madness had about 20 hits, mostly in the 1980s. They're from London and were a kind of ska/pop band
Great 80’s!
You are right Brad and Lex, the chorus "OUR HOUSE" WAS recently used in 2021 for ALLSTATE INSURANCE, so that is likely where you heard THAT part
Even after 40 years this band still brings a smile to my face and a need to sing along like a fool. Thx for that.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “One Step Beyond”!!
edit - "Our House" appears in a 2021 TV commercial for Allstate.
No they won't
Love this song. Try their One Step Beyond and Night Boat to Cairo
"One Step Beyond" is great, a (mostly) instrumental, early Ska music.
It's a good song about fond childhood memories.
YES!!! Please do more Madness, Nightboat to Cairo, Baggy Trousers, Must be Love,.......and more SKA
I once read a review about this wonderful Madness song that said something like: "It's because of songs like "Our house" that, if you don't enjoy listening to music, you don't know how to enjoy life"
I took this 45 to school and our teacher let us all listen to it. So much fun!
Madness are still huge here in the UK, they've been headlining festivals this summer. A great catalogue of catchy songs about everyday working people and an amazing live act that gets everybody signing and dancing.
"It must be love" and "Embarassment" are also very good by Madness.
I forgot how cool this song is. Ao well constructed and played. Loved it!
England, early 1980's
this song has been in many TV commercials.
Brad always looks like he's skeptical or ambivalent when hearing a song while Lex seems delighted all the time, LOL. 😄
I love the bridge in the song 1:55 “something tells you that you’ve got to move away from it” 😂🤣
This is from the early 80's, Madness were a different flavour. everyone has a soft spot for Madness.
"One Step Beyond" would do nicely 🙂
Back in 79/80 when I first heard them and The Specials on import singles, then their 1st album import and "finally" the 1st record released in the US in 80, they were a ton of fun and they got played a lot in-store by a couple of us (in all of the stores I worked at, whoever was working the register shift, had absolute control over the turntable, except of course for customer requests, so we were able to "promote" the people/groups we liked.
Congrats guys on the news from the UK 👍
This song was used some years ago in an internet/phone/tv commercial.
My son was shocked to hear me singing along with the chorus!
Ah Madness, one of my staple bands of the 80’s. It reminds me of The Young Ones, a Pommie cult tv show. It must be love is worth checking out. I’m sure Lex will enjoy it.
It's British and it's old 83.or so that guy singing is funny as hell. He could have been a comedian.
Madness was one of the original SKA bands, check out their song One step beyond. Check out The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones: Some day I suppose.
