@@shwicaz yep. TH-cam has “Eskimo Blue Day” live at Family Dog and a 1969 video of “Greasy Heart” that the Airplane did. Both great. But I love the live rooftop performance of “Pooneil” - that band had so many firsts.
Grace Slick paved the way for ALOT of female singers. She started the whole female rock voice. She predates Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson, Patti Smyth, Pat Benetar, all of them.
Yes that shaky note is Vibrato that Singer Grace Slick uses. Jefferson Airplane was one of the best groups showing the "San Francisco Sound" in 1967 the :Summer of Love" . I met the bands Bass player, Jack Casady in 1984 he came in to a San Francisco club I was playing in a blues band. Jack complimented my guitar playing , which I loved because his band was so great and he also played with Jimi Hendrix on the song "Voodoo Child".
Grace Slick is the vocalist. "Miracles" by Jefferson Starship is a great track and worth a listen. If it's a later version of the same band. NIce reaction.
Oh and when they went from Jefferson Starship to just Starship, Mickey Thomas was lead vocals on "Jane" Great song. And if they do that one they need to do Elvin Bishop "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" the Midnight Special Version. Mickey Thomas sings lead on that as well. Powerful voice.
Singer is Grace Slick. TIME magazine wrote about her that she "had a voice that could haunt a house". More evidence is th-cam.com/video/dyMtIwobqbI/w-d-xo.html
An iconic singer Grace Slick, an iconic song. Was out in 67 Summer of Love. Dug it then still do. Has a good physadelic mix popular then. Great vocals, one of the greatest singers ever. Kudos to the band also.
SPRING OF '67, THE 1ST SONG RECORDED WITH GRACE SLICK, WHO HAD JUST JOINED THE BAND. GRACE WAS A TOTAL BABE, WITH A POWERFUL VOICE. ---------------MJL, 75 Y/O
Grace Slick’s voice has gave me goosebumps every since I was a kid! Could you check out “white rabbit “ by them? Another one of my favorites by Jefferson Airplane.
I was a roadie for another SF band, the Sons of Champlin. We worked on many shows with the Jefferson Airplane. New Year's Eve 1969 with them and Grateful Dead.
Great Hippie band from the mid to late sixties. In the 70s, they changed the name and some members but still carried on until the 1980s I believe. Under the name "Jefferson Starship. The original Airplane is one of my favorite bands. Thank you for covering them.
A 60's classic from the San Francisco band Jefferson Airplane who later became the Jefferson Starship. The name changed but not the great music especially in 1975 with the haunting song " Miracles". Couple of songs that are classics by the Jefferson Airplane are, " White Rabbit" and " Pretty as You Feel"
Grace Slick.. the amazing and powerful front woman of the Jefferson Airplane / Starship. She possessed a strong contralto voice with a killa' vibrato. Young people now don't know about the usage of one's vibrato when singing as modern singers tend to not use or develop it. Listen to the greats of yesteryear.. Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, all possessed amazing vibrato's. The stylistic usage of one's vibrato makes the music more dramatic and intonative.
This song came out in 1967, i’m glad there is no video so you two didn’t get distracted and actually listen to the music and the lyrics, good reaction. More Jefferson airplane, White rabbit,. Volunteers,. Then they change to Jefferson starship,.” Miracle”, “Jane”, “Count on me”, “Runaway”,. have fun enjoy the music.
Yesterday, was Grace Slick's 82md birthday. She is only 2nd to Janis Joplin, for the Queen of Rock, in the 60's. Truthfully they're 1a and 1b and who cares which one's top. They both so much power in their voices. While I never saw Janis live - I did get to see JA, and hear Grace live when they came to Houston, in either '70 or '71.
Worked on alcatraz island for 24 years, one day my older coworker showed me the record cover of quicksilver, and in the back ground was my coworker walking by in the picture!
Back in the early 70's the Airplane and the Dead played a game of softball against each other on a little public field about a 1/2 mile from where I'm at.
This is Grace Slick on lead vocals here. The band had a two main singers. The other was Marty Balin. The band later became known as The Jefferson Starship.
I loved this song growing up and Grace Slick was a great singer, and now my favorite band Liliac covered this and killed it. Melody's voice is perfect for this song and Darby Slick commented that he loved their performance. Thanks for the great reaction. Stay safe.
The lead singers daughter used to be a very popular VJ on MTV during the 80's. China Kantner (Grace's daughter), Ricki Rachtman, Adam Curry, Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, Karen "Duff" Duffy, Downtown Julie Brown just to name a few who were there with her before and after.
Grace Slicks stellar voice, great instrumentation all good from start to finish. Very fortunate to have grown up in this time and countless great songs on the radio. Believe this was out in 67.
Grace Slick held that last note 'LOVE' for like 9 seconds. When I first heard this from the Album "Surrealistic Pillow" I remember asking out loud "Who is THAT singing this?!'
A friend of mine was working at a Grace Slick concert and when the limo pulled up apparently Grace Slick was wasted. This was typical of her. My friend was sure that they would have to cancel the show but Grace went onstage was sang an amazing concert.
As a teenager growing up in Southern California in the’60’s I saw any number of bands, the Airplane twice. My all-time favorite. She had voice like a laser - even live. She could hurt your ears, and I didn’t mind one bit.
Jefferson Airplane was one of THE iconic psychedelic westcoast bands in the 60-s, early 70-s. Their absolutly immortal masterpiece is imho "Wite Rabbit". Short, but a buildup, what was rarely reached in music history...
They were a psychedelic band, but if feels worthwhile to note that most of the content is based off of the Alice in Wonderland story as the song/trip's basis.
IN 1967 at the Montreal Worlds Fair they with The Grateful Dead were to perform on the floating stage. Gracey Slick found out at an interview at a radio station that the prices were a bit high for there normal fans so she announced that they and The Grateful Dead would do a free concert that they put together really quickly downtown. It was a huge success and they even footed the bill for thousands of free flowers for the fans
Grace Slick at times sings in vibrato, the voice is alternating subtly and very quickly between two pitches that are very close together. This periodic variation in the pitch (frequency) of a sustained musical note or tone should not exceed a semitone either way from the note itself. The effect is believed to add warmth to the voice.
The lead vocalist is the legendary Grace Slick. If you haven't already reacted to the song White Rabbit, also by Jefferson Airplane, you will definitely want to do that
An iconic song. Grace Slick is one of the greatest singers to me. White Rabbit is much different tho quite good. I dug a few of their songs when they morphed into Jefferson Starship.
There is so much reverb turned up on this it's sounds like they recorded in an empty Airplane Hangar lol. But that's the way it was released back in the day.
Jefferson Airplane is a iconic band that was formed in the late 60s and remained relevant into the 90s but they changed their name from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship and then to just Starship the lead singer on this song is a lady named Grace Slick what a cool name huh

Her life and career has been an incredible wild ride. Look for past interviews with Grace on TH-cam.
White Rabbit, Greasy Heart...songs written and sung by the one & only Grace Slick - the voice that launched a thousand trips.
Greasy Heart is THE JAM. I find JA two 'hits' the least exciting or explorative of their songs. "Eskimo Blue Day" is one of my faves.
@@shwicaz yep. TH-cam has “Eskimo Blue Day” live at Family Dog and a 1969 video of “Greasy Heart” that the Airplane did. Both great. But I love the live rooftop performance of “Pooneil” - that band had so many firsts.

Grace and Janis, SF sound
Heart is good and Ann Wilson gives respect to Grace Slick for doing it first - Grace sings back-up vocals on Heart's "What About Love"
That’s right.. Janice Joplin was in the same era though.. but Janis was a different type Not sexy… but fantastic none the less
Grace Slick, the voice that launched a thousand trips
The female vocalist is Grace Slick. A great psychodelic band from San Franciso. They morphed into Jefferson Starship.

The phrase for the vocal style you're describing that Grace uses here is "vibrato", where the vocal notes waver back & forth intentionally.
Ahhh….. the ‘60’s❤️❤️❤️
When you guys were talking about part of her vocals, it was a vibrato effect she was doing with her voice.
