The 8-hour/day work model is designed when only one parent is working. If governments now want to maintain healthy fertility rate in their countries, they can start by reducing working hours. This can spillover into employing more people too. The mental health of millions of adults and children can be improved.

I'd add a few points here: - Having children is a LOT of work! Most people are exhausted with their routines already... - Having a job is not an option for women, it's a need... we need the money to sustain ourselves and, even for couples, one salary is not enough to sustain a family (even if the guy is a good husband)
I believe the fact that there are many two-salary couples means the average family income, and thus purchasing power, is being increased, and thus prices go up, particularly for housing, making it more difficult for many one-salary couples to afford it. I suspect (and hope) you really meant "... even if the guy is a good PROVIDER". Some 'good husbands' don't have high earnings, and some wealthy husbands are not necessarily good.

The first time I realized having kids made no sense was when I witnessed my coworkers getting yelled at by supervisors every day for not breast pumping fast enough during their lunch break. The poor women would barely have time to eat their lunch and they would have to breast pump in a nasty bathroom stall that was never cleaned. This was also nightshift, so lunch was at 2 AM. That's when I realized they either had married the wrong husband, or at least should have waited to have the financial luxury of getting away from an employer like that.
Why are you blaming the woman in this? You have no idea why she would be in this situation. You dont know if her husband was laid off, sick, or injured. Also you dont know if they financially were better off but just fell on hard times. It is completely the employers fault for treating her that way. No one should be yelled out for trying to provide milk for their child during their own lunch break.
@@Anni3ization I am not blaming the woman I am just saying she is putting herself in a risky situation because she has a husband that clearly demonstrated that he isn’t able to protect her and she has an employer she was in no position to fight against. Your point is valid but I know some people who tell themselves and others that they do not want kids even though they would if they had a choice. Sometimes one just have to ask oneself; “am I actually fit to be a parent?” And if your answer is no, it is no. Your child is not a mini version of you, they can’t fulfil all your lost aspirations, they are not your possession or toy, they are an autonomous human being. And I have witnessed too many parents not getting that.
I've heard from Steven Pinker that parents don't really have much lasting influence on their children after they leave home... I don't understanding this whole idea of if parents can't be perfect they can't have children.
If you're the oldest in a single parent family where the parent works, and your sibling is 10 years younger, it takes a childhood to raise a child - yours.
I taught at a college and those young adults did not want to bring a child into the world for fear (mental health issues, bullying, social pressures). Now I did teach in nursing so they might me more aware of those situations and negative consequences, but I found them very articulate. My generation felt the need and desire to have a child for fulfillment. This generation experiences their fulfillment in other ways. I do not think we should impose our beliefs and desires on this generation. My son has said for years (since he was 18) he did not want children. For the first 10 minutes after I found this out, I was devastated. But within 10 minutes - I realized "why would I want something for him that he does not want for himself". I found my belief to be very selfish and I did a 180. I want him happy. We should want everyone happy and it should never be decided because it can provide a stable financial future for our county. That makes for terrible parenting and resulting future generations who are not really wanted. Let them be and decide on their own.

until you reach your mid 30's and start to realize that you want to have kids and it's too late - if that's the path you choose, good for you, and go for it - but look into what comes next, get the details about people who don't have kids, especially women, and look to your future. The option to adopt is there, but most people will never take it But, to all the childless couples out there, remember that when you're old, you'll have no family, only friends, no memories and nothing to drive you to work harder and be better for the generation you could be raising up - and that you're taking from society and not giving back - and as your numbers grow, your decision is simply dooming mankind
Will your career be there for you when you are 70+ and can't take care of yourself anymore? We need balance in life. You ask yourself very hard questions when the company you worked at for 30 years fires you overnight.
Let's be real here. The only reason governments are worried about this is that there are fewer people to contribute to pension funds. What did they expect with 14 hour work days, barely any increase in median salary and insanely high property prices?

Other countries that have a high population density should remain around 2.1, not much higher. I moved from Germany (1,53 reproduction rate) to Netherlands (1,57 reproduction rate) and personally do not have kids but can see that NL has a lot more child friendly policies, while Germany has long struggled to take kids and young families serious. Just 1-2 generations ago a man would spent most of his life working for one company and he would earn enough for his wife to stay at home and raise 2 or more kids but the number of jobs that can actually feed an entire family has gone done and most people have 2-3 jobs to make ends meet. Yes this doesn't effect you or I but as time moves on and the rate continues to decline. So as we see now with older generations that had more children as they age there are more elderly with not enough youth to support the aging population as time goes on it will become more of a problem. The marriage thing is a social issue and not really a factor but the birth rates is an issue. And humans have been always wanting to discover, improvise and invent newer things and technologies that doesn't mean that we're immortal... Humans have evolved in a way that they're at the top of the pyramid - they're animals with emotions and rational thought so unlike other species we cannot jus take things in terms of reproduction rate and the prospect of species continuity... There are a good proportion of the human species willing to reproduce and sustain life on planet and of course if the species is going towards lack of sustainability or regression that is natural too and in case of humans the cause could be a result of a conscious decision not to reproduce... For the sake of species continuity I strongly disagree that we should force people to marry or reproduce. Above all if the human race finds it's end by people choosing not to reproduce then let it... Reasons for not planning the marriage or having children in the present world can be understood as follows: 1. Living has become more uncertain and expensive due to inflation and no control on the rising prices in the market. 2. Unemployment or uncertain employment. 3. Work life balance disturbed. In a day of 24 hours, the number of hours used for work(including travelling) vs number of hours left for living. In some cases husband and wife are living apart under compelling circumstances for their employment/career. 4. The standard of living was brought down by the governments of almost all the countries so that both husband and wife are compelled to work for making a living. 5. Health care - expensive 6. Education - expensive 7. Transportation - expensive 8. Taxation - expensive (multi point taxation) 9. Quality of life - Inferior 10. Quality of products - Inferior 11. Crimes on rise - no control 12. Services are commercial - no more noble. How can anyone think of marrying or having children in such world.
You have put my thoughts into words, yet many will insist that “life is what you make it” but how?? When everything literally has a high price and most jobs don’t even pay a livable wage forcing most to cramp up their homes with too many people as a way to pay the bills. I don’t have privacy in my own home as it is so in my current state I should know better than to bring children to this messed up world.
Exactly! These same politicians who call us selfish also have made life so unaffordable and difficult. They are not acting in our interests, it’s only because they want more cheap labor to make them rich.

Kids are expensive and stressful. Two parents are working to pay their bills. Daycare is a grand a month for one kid for the first 5 years until school age. Kids are sick a lot when they are young, then you have the fun teenage years. Traveling and freedom is gone. Our world is a mess with wars, climate change, pandemics, drugs, poverty. Groceries, rent, utilities, insurance etc. all keeps going up. Who wants to sign up for that?
Well, to be fair our world has always been a mess of wars, changing climate, pandemics, drugs and poverty. Those will never go away. The cost to raise a family though, yeah it’s gotten unaffordable for a lot of people.
The mindset now is to live for oneself. Having children places a huge financial, emotional, and physical burden on a person. Kudos to people who choose to have them, but don't judge those who choose to live their lives for themselves. That's not being selfish.
It’s an act against humanity. TFR decline impact Will be evident in just 30 years from now, say 2050. It’s forcefull impact is now backfiring China hugely because of its policies.
Not having children does NOT equal living to only oneself. That makes it sound selfish. I don't have my own kids but rescue animals, I decided to simply help the needy that were ALREADY alive. I help my sister with her kids. Some childless people help the world in other ways. I might adopt a couple of preteens or teens later in life. And yes, some childless people are simply honest about not wanting to be bothered with caring for anything extra.

Simple reason, all females want to control reproduction and by saying these things she eliminate competition for her own kids, thus giving them a better chance of success.
That's because palki is a progressive woman. You can never expect a conservative woman to show decency towards a random child free woman.
Why wouldn't she.
Having kids have become the most toughest job and bringing up them is a huge responsibility. In this competitive world, trying to give them the best becomes expensive , because of which working in a stressful environment also becomes mandatory.
Giving children the best of everything is not always the solution. Most kids today are spoiled and honestly want shortcuts to money and success.

choosing not to have children is something I would describe abortion supporters as well. And staying childless as a result. Like a child who intentionally chooses not to be adopted or to reject having a parent, being parent-less and parent-free.
Problem is that the wrong people are having too many children.
Narcissistic people believe being in competition with people is the meaning of life. So they need to have kids in order to feed their ego and keep up with the Joneses. Unfortunately the kid suffers.

I'd add a few points here:
- Having children is a LOT of work!

It's ridiculous that an employer should do that. they would get sued to oblivion today. That company is the problem what an asshole manager.
@@jimbopurple2652 yeah i totally agree, the employer is the problem not the woman.
Why are you blaming the woman in this? You have no idea why she would be in this situation. You dont know if her husband was laid off, sick, or injured. Chill...Evolution will have it's course!

With climate change happening, what we need now is less drain on our water and electrical systems, not more. Same, I have not wanted kids since I was 13. Im now 34 still no children and have no plans to ever have kids.
They are too expensive, education is spotty, politics is entering the education system, and inflation is going crazy. Why on earth would I make my life harder just to have kids? @Susanne Boretsky Agreed that sympathy is difficult but once again you put it all on women. They did NOT get pregnant by immaculate conception. This whole cycle of having kids helps in providing the labour force for a country's economy but the country's policies rarely reflect anything positive for these parents to go through with it

Reasons for not planning the marriage or having children in the present world can be understood as follows:
5. Health care - expensive
6. Education - expensive
7. Transportation - expensive
8. Taxation - expensive (multi point taxation)
9. Quality of life - Inferior
10. Quality of products - Inferior
11. Crimes on rise - no control
Very true.... marriage and babies is not going to be affordable.....being single working person in a family with no pension in future and money being first criteria , it is very difficult to raise kids and to care of them .....

I have 1 child and a baby on the way in a few weeks, raising a baby has been difficult, but rewarding. It forced me to get serious about finances, and consumerism. We are now minimalists placing our value on education, travel, and self enrichment instead of hoarding a bunch or consumer items, as well as focusing on being debt free, I don't know if we plan on having a 3rd child, mainly not due to finances, but our ability to give the much needed attention to our two children, and not have to divide up our time too much between so many children.
