    These points are all valid! One important thing you missed out is that high profile tyres resist potholes much better, whereas low profile tyres can end up with punctures or even dented/cracked rims compared to high profile tyres over the same pothole. Ask me how I know 😅
    Also low profile tyres tend to follow road undulations, eg, trucks making tyre grooves in heavily used roads. I’ve found that cars with low profile tyres tend to want to follow these and you can feel it in the steering wheel.

    I chose the SXT Challenger partly because it was available with 18" wheels instead of 20". I do a lot of driving on both city and country roads and for the reasons you mentioned in this video I chose the high profile tires.

      Yeah I was slightly unhappy when I bought my wheels because I couldnt find a set of 18's, I bought 17's. They were Cobra R wheels, it was the early 2000s, wheels were a lot smaller back then on average. But everytime I went to buy tires, I was always happy that I went with the 17s.

    The problem is that cars are coming out from factories with low profiles tires. Proof that style sells more than efficiency. These low profile tires are so uncomfortable when hitting a hole and they sacrifice the car components so much. Stupidity...

    • @DriveAndBeDriven

      This is sadly true! More and more cars are rolling off of the assembly lines with very low profile tires.

    doesn't the rim size have to do with how big the breaks are. smaller rim less room. larger rim more room

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for commenting, number1 bonefan! You are absolutely correct. Brake size has to do with rim size... But, if you are considering two identical wheels with the same circumferences. The wheel with the lower profile will theoretically be able to fit the larger brakes. While the vehicle with the higher profile will theoretically be able to fit the smaller brakes. I hope this clears up any confusion.

      I would think that depends more on the tire type, like make and model. Although stiffer side walls might help make a bit more noise over bumps maybe.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely correct, Ben. Also, the wider a tire is, the louder it tends to be regarding cabin noise due to the increased road contact. Once again, this is dependent on brands, but in general (company same brand/style tires from the same manufacturer) these theories hold true. 😁✌🏽

    Yes there is more rubber since the sidewall is higher but there is also more air between the imperfection in the road and the rim. My tires are lower than a high profile but not considered low profile and they can be harsh especially going over those damn ridges they leave for weeks until they can repave the grated roads.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate your comment, Mick Taylor! That is absolutely true. High Profile tires typically offer more ground clearance than Lower Profile tires (when equipped on a vehicle with the same wheel size). As a result, if there is more rubber (like found on a high profile tire), the ground clearance will be higher. Furthermore, there will be more rubber/"air" between the road and the wheels of the vehicle... Allowing for more of a smooth, and less of a harsh ride (like in Lower Profile tires).

    Good points being made ; there is absolute madness with low profile tires on today's cars..!
    Unless you mostly drive on perfectly smooth roads OR a race track "avoid low profile tires".
    ..................................................................................................
    I regularly drive two performance cars (same model) original wheels & tires, but one came with large wheels & low profile tires. The ONLY advantage, the low profile tires provide is an improvement in fast cornering - sitting flatter and more predictable on a good surface.
    ...................................................................................................
    The same model car with a "more normal profile" has more traction accelerating & braking. The normal profile also performs way better on pot holes & rough surfaces ( where the LP would shimmy and slide out ) also the normal profile is way better on a wet road....
    ....................................................................................................
    As for looks of Low Profile?? That's personal taste - I like more than just a "rubber band".
    You don't see top Dragsters running Low Profile ; they look & work better than Low Profile.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are all excellent points, Marsh! Thanks so much for leaving such a detailed comment.
      Also, I wanted to mention that high-profile narrow tires will experience more "lateral sidewall flex" due to the ratio of tire width vs tire profile. Essentially, the sidewall on vehicles with this tire setup will feel as if they have more of a flexible sidewall. This would result in the car feeling as if it is wobbling slightly while driving around corners at increased speeds. A few pros to this tire setup is less road contact, which (in general) will result in higher fuel-efficiency numbers. Also, a higher-profile tire will equate to more sidewall, meaning you'll typically have a more "plush" driving experience.
      While on the other hand, low-profile wide tires will experience more of a "planted confidence" while cornering at higher speeds. This is due to less sidewall flex, and more width to grip the road surface. A few cons to this tire setup is more road contact which (in general) will result in lower fuel-efficiency numbers and possibly more road noise inside the cabin. Also, a lower profile tire will equate to less sidewall, meaning you'll typically have a bit more of a "harsh" experience when riding over road imperfections.
      I hope this information, and my video helped you out! If you enjoyed, please subscribe and like this video for more awesome content coming soon. Thanks so much!!

    Low profile tires or high profile tires have nothing to do with if you can run large brakes its the rim size that matters you can get low profile tires in almost all wheel sizes.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate you choosing to check this video out, fathertimenc! You are 100% correct. Low profile tires and high profile tires have nothing to with if you can have larger brakes or not. The point I was essentially trying to make was that if you are considering two wheels, with the same radius (including the sidewall), the higher profile tire will have a smaller rim size due to the decrease in circumference, because of the larger profile tire... While a lower profile tire will typically have a larger rim. Resulting in more room for larger brakes. I hope this clears up your concern. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

      Obviously on the same size car lower profile tyre allows you to have bigger rims. Come on it's obvious.

  • @Zickcermacity
    @Zickcermacity 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I prefer 60- or higher- series profile tires because their contact patch is parallel to direction of vehicle travel. Common sense. They track more like they're 'on rails' than do 50/40/30-series low profile tires, all heights being equal. Wider tires tend to be 'distracted' more by road imperfections, requiring constant correction and reduction of power steering assist. Narrower tires, given same height, tend to track straighter, and resist turning effort more, lending some heft when steering into turns.

    • @roxximusik8958
      @roxximusik8958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zickcermacity : your point about relative contact patches and their relationship to 'direction of travel' is interesting - but I'm not sure I understand it ! I wonder whether relative camber values play some part as well ?

    • @Zickcermacity
      @Zickcermacity 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike Carter: A relatively taller, narrower tire 'wants' or tends to go straight. They also require less caster or SAI to do so, because more of the vehicle weight is concentrated in a narrower patch parallel to direction of travel, not perpendicular to it as with wider tires. In all cases, increasing positive caster also increase negative outboard camber in a turn, which enhances stability and traction in the turn. IE if you are turning left, the right hand front tire will assume a negative camber angle(top inward) while the wheels are pointed left. For the 'all rims no rubber' crowd, I would suggest a taller wheel of equal width to the stock one, with same tire width but lower sidewall wrapped around it. IE: P195-75R14, upgrade to P195-55R17(if such size tire exists). You are preserving both original tire diameter and width, just changing proportion of sidewall to wheel showing. Just make sure that 17 wheel preserves original mfg offset and thus scrub radius! :)

    • @roxximusik8958
      @roxximusik8958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zickcermacity : Many thanks for the words of wisdom. I now realise that this whole subject is rather complicated, and quite hard to visualise for dunderheads like me without recourse to crayons and walls ! I also get the impression that you need to modify (from stock) with care, since changes in geometry and vehicle components have knock-on effects which may not always be desirable. What's that saying about' a little
      knowledge '?
      I have a current interest in the 'orientation' of front strut mount bearings : they are designed to be installed in one position only - typically with 3 studs and a locating pip. Does this ensure correct caster and/or camber ? And what would be the practical result of mounting it say 90 deg. off (looking down from the top) ?

    Thanks for the video. I got a standard highway tread on my new RAM. You're right it handles city and the highway very comportably .On rough and gravel road it picks -up tiny pebbles at slow speed no problem but when you're on the highway with higher rate of speed those things slingshot all over like crazy and you can't slow down because the one following you is driving so fast . Yeah, I thought about bigger thread but also bigger stones .

      I am glad you found this video helpful, Ruben Calixerio! I had tons of fun creating it. Also, you have some pretty valid points there. The smaller tread on your RAM is more prone to throwing pebbles around. While, bigger tread may pick up bigger stones, but how often will a big stone get stuck in your tires? Probably not that often.

      So something in between would be good

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't heard the term used before but yeah, that should exist. Use a tire size calculator website or talk to a mechanic about which tires sizes will fit, find a tire you like in that size (although it might be best / more important to just find a good tire and get a size that works for you vs doing it the other way around since the tire brand and model will make more of a difference than size).
      There are sites like willtheyfit.com and/or tiresize.com/calculator/ which help you calculate and find a similar height tire, so basically you can go from a 16 inch tire to a 15 or up to a 17 inch tire and adjust the side wall height up or down so your tire is about the same height even though it's mounted on a different size rim.
      Tire size 185 / 65 / R15 means the tire is 185mm wide, and 65% is the side wall height (65% of the 185mm) and the Radius is 15inches.
      For regular higher profile tires, the middle number is generally 60 or 65,
      For low profile tires they're usually about 40%
      So if you want a slightly thinner side wall you'll want to go down to 55 or 50, but that number is also related to the width of the tire (first number).
      Usually you go up in tire size (like 15 to 16 inch) if you want a thinner profile, so you keep height relatively the same, otherwise you throw off speed sensors and stuff because the tire circumference changes and the car doesn't know what speed it's traveling at.
      For example switching from 185 / 65/ 15 to 185/50/16 would give you about the same height, but side wall would be reduced from 4.4 inch to 3.6 inches.
      But keep in mind there might not be a good selection of tires for uncommon sizes, or sometimes they're expensive.

  • @thomaswilding8818

    Bigger rims and low profile tyres will make your car slower in all respects except cornering. With same overall diameter, low profile tyres on a bigger rim is heavier than smaller rims and higher profile tyres. As well as being heavier overall, more of the weight is near the outside of the wheel, increasing rotational mass. And that's why, all else being equal, low profile increases 0-60 time, increases your braking distance, and uses more fuel.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for viewing this video, Thomas! That was quite an immaculate explanation for the reasoning behind Low Profile Tires increasing 0-60 times, increasing braking distance, and using more fuel than High Profile Tires (when all else is equal).

      Absolutely! Not only is the low-profile aspect working in your favor, but the fact that your 2nd car's tires are wide also helps. 225 width is a pretty decent amount of rubber to hug you to the road. 😁👍🏼

      Thanks for commenting, hao duong! You are absolutely correct. Low profile tires having a stiff ride can be both a "pro" and a "con". I guess at the time I didn't even think about 'faster response time' as being a "pro" to having a stiffer ride. I appreciate the clarification, though.

    The high profile tires on multi million dollar formula 1 cars seem to be working out well for them so no reason to ever get stupid low profile tires.

  • @briank10101
    @briank10101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    In my opinion higher profile is better as lower transmission of road imperfections is going to provide benefit all the time where as more responsive steering feel from low profile tires is going to provide benefit for a very short time if one even gets the opportunity in most driving situations. For me the pros of higher profile far outweigh any benefit of lower profile tires. It's sad that auto reviewers and customers alike seem to fall for having a firm stiff "sporty" ride during the test drive and then have to live with this when the novelty soon wears off. This is like the crowd that's into dropped suspensions, high revving high strung engines and sporty loud exhausts. For most of them they eventually realize the coolness wears off and privately regret it when their body aches after a 30 minute commute and some eventually learn from their mistakes. Just watch videos of cars with dropped suspensions and rubber band tires going over average bumps with all the occupants being launched in the air - the drivers will be covering their faces with embarrassment in a few years.....really funny stuff.

      +Brian K, I agree! Both high profile and low profile tires have their upsides and and their downsides. Ultimately though, high profile tires will provide the most comfort, and will result in less of a jarring ride (when compared to low profile tires)! 😏
      Also, this is very much a current "craze" or "fad" that will soon pass over! Many automakers are going towards more "sporty" driving dynamics, tires, and modes in even entry level economy cars!

      Actually, when *vehicle manufacturers themselves* engineer a car with large wheels and wide low-profile tires, they generally tend to account for it in several key areas(uhhm, some better than others!):
      1. Maintaining same relative wheel 'offset' on factory wide/tall rims as specified on factory narrow base rims.
      2. Maintaining same scrub radius by calculating offset in step #1. This is crucial in maintaining same road-feel and steering response across trim levels of a specific model vehicle.
      3. Reducing(slightly) amount of power steering assist(electric or conventional doesn't matter!) on trim levels with greater diameter rims with wider low profile tires, since they are easier to steer - as I said elsewhere almost too easy to turn. *Or* as Hyundai, and other mfgs notably did, offer Steering or Drive modes which alter the amount of steering assist provided to the driver. 'Light/Comfort', 'Normal', 'Heavy/Sport', for example.
      Remember: wider low-profile steers easier, narrower, high-profile steers harder, generally. That is of course dependent on alignment angles engineered in, observance of correct tire pressures, and speed-rating of given tires. If even the base trim level of a model features 55-series or lower profile tire/wheels, more SAI and/or caster angle should be designed in to self center such a vehicle at higher speed.
      I, for one, like heavier steering feel with quick centering steering wheel, than the average driver.
      4. Tuning shocks/struts to account for lower-profile sidewalls and alleviation of rough ride they lend.
      On the other hand:
      When after-market plus-sizing is desired on an existing vehicle, the items in steps 1 and 2 are often not carefully considered, and the result is twitchy, unpredictable steering, and other side effects, not limited to tires rubbing against parts of the body, etc etc.
      In those cases, it's better to return to the dealer, in the case of an older used car that you want to plus-size the wheel/tire combo on, and purchase wheels or rims made or specified by the manufacturer of that make and model.

    This misses the entire point of high and low profile tyres. Its called "sidewall force", low profile tyres have less space to be affected by sidewall forces and have less of a yaw, more feedback, and generally better grip on a race track. A road isn't as smooth and so the grip may be better with a conventional tyre managing bumps better but they will still suffer with a higher yaw and will tend to struggle with higher downforce levels. Of course this isn't the only way to manage sidewall forces, if anything it seems like a pretty lazy measure to do so only popularized because of their looks. Real race cars will use tyres with a far stiffer sidewall and constructed to resist these effects with a high sidewall through proper engineering. Everything else mentioned in this video is secondary, the reason such tyres are used is because of an improved grip and better driver feedback. I mean shit, if a Formula 1 and GT cars can get away with small brakes there's little reason for a street car to need a set of 15 inch brakes.

    • @bmac9736
      @bmac9736 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The sidewalls on Real race cars are very soft, especially F1. The sidewall will bend and warp so the contact patch remains.

      Thanks so much for commenting, Pilap S! The profile of a tire typically doesn't affect fuel economy. Technically, if you get a higher profile tire, you will be looking at a lighter unsprung weight (typically). So, in turn, that may affect fuel economy, but for the most part tire profile won't cause any drastic changes to fuel economy.

    I checked a few different brands and types of tires, low profile tires don't have less tread. You can check on tire rack website and look up specs of higher profile and low profile tires, they're the usually same or very similar depth. Changing the depth of the tread is going to change the properties of the tire which is probably why they wouldn't do that.

    • @BensCoffeeRants

      Pretty sure low profile tires are cheaper because there is less side wall rubber, but not sure about the tread being smaller, that could easily be measured. You can check different tire depths on tirerack website they don't vary that much.

      Yes, and in the case of a front-wheel drive car, you will probably gain lots of negative scrub radius, which will help reduce torque steer on takeoff from traffic lights.

    My MX5 with 17" wheels came without a spare. I don't like the goo stuff, so I carry a plug kit for the common puncture type damage. I have had to make quick repairs a couple of times, and found that the smaller profile makes using the plug insertion tool more difficult as it tends to bottom out. I managed well enough with the 17" but may not have succeeded with more narrow sidewalls. Maybe inserting at an angle?

    Is there any sig diff between 235/60/18 to 235/55/18? I plan to change my tires from 60 to 55. Also, arent brakes fitted with rim size instead of tires size? Big or small tires doesn’t really matter if you were to get bigger brakes you need bigger rims than tires am i not correct?

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for commenting, Syakir Bin Abd Karim! The only difference between those two tire types (235/60/18 & 235/55/18) will be the tire profile. Since both tires have the same width. The 60mm or 55mm will resemble the thickness/height of the side wall. The difference between the sizes is very 'slim'. As a result, I wouldn't expect there to be a huge difference in the overall driving dynamics of your vehicle.
      Also, you are completely correct! Brakes aren't fitted with tire size, but rather the rim size. The point I was trying to make was that if you are considering two wheels, with the same radius (including the sidewall), the higher profile tire will have a smaller rim size due to the decrease in circumference, because of the larger profile tire... While a lower profile tire will typically have a larger rim. Resulting in more room for larger brakes. I hope this clears up your concern. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

    I kinda like high profile tires. When I took my fwd boat to a road corse the extra profile makes the steering kinda have a spongy feel between when you turn the wheel and when the car reacts. It's Suttle but it kinda gave me a feel of How far I could turn before I started loosing traction going into a corner. I probably don't know what I'm talking about. Lol the tires were shredded after 8 laps hahahaha

    • @DriveAndBeDriven

      Thanks for commenting, Salvatore! High profile tires usually have a softer ride. Therefore, you usually can feel their limits a bit earlier than those of low profile tires which tend to have more steering feel (and are typically a bit more engaging to drive).

    U did not mention the performance.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Gich Raval. Here's a more detailed description covering "performance" comparisons between high vs low profile tires. Hope this helps! :)
      High-profile tires will experience more "lateral sidewall flex" due to the ratio of tire width vs tire profile. Essentially, the sidewall on vehicles with this tire setup will feel as if they have more of a flexible sidewall. This would result in the car feeling as if it is wobbling slightly while driving around corners at increased speeds. Also, a higher profile tire will equate to more sidewall, meaning you'll typically have a more "plush" driving experience.
      While on the other hand, low-profile tires will experience more of a "planted confidence" while cornering at higher speeds. This is due to less sidewall flex. Also, a lower profile tire will equate to less sidewall, meaning you'll typically have a bit more of a "harsh" experience when riding over road imperfections.
      I hope this information helps. If so, please subscribe. Thanks so much! Take care, Gich.

      Thanks for commenting, jugheadfk! Increasing your automobile's tires profile typically will result in a slightly softer ride feel and an overall softening of road imperfections. Thanks so much for commenting, reuven mats! That is a great question. The only reason why I may think this is the case is that on "economy cars" high profile tires are usually standard equipment. With optional larger rims (which usually translate to lower profile tires). Also, as you upgrade to larger rims manufacturers tend to improve the performance of their vehicles by offering wider tires (which may reduce fuel economy), but offer more "performance" and look more visually appealing. • @DriveAndBeDriven

      Thanks so much for commenting, Rama Roopa! That is true, High Profile tires typically offer more ground clearance than Lower Profile tires (when equipped on a vehicle with the same wheel size). As a result, if there is more rubber (like found on a high profile tire), the ground clearance will be higher. Furthermore, there will be more rubber/"air" between the road and the wheels of the vehicle... Allowing for more of a smooth, and less harsh ride.

    Hey there! I Hav Currently a Honda Fit 2015 and its stock tyre is 175/65 R15 and iam looking for an upgrade.Suggest me an alloy wheel vch wuld increase its acceleration and grip with neglible compromise in fuel efficiency..
    The grip in my mind is around 185mm and size is around 15 /16 kindly suggest..✅✅TIA

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I appreciate the comment, Nikhil Banger! Installing alloy rims on your 2015 Fit will allow for a lighter overall weight. Which, in turn, will most likely result in the vehicle to be slightly more nimble, and offer slightly better fuel economy (due to the lighter weight of the alloys). If you want more of a clarification on this topic, feel free to refer to my Alloy Wheels vs. Steel Wheels Video by clicking here: th-cam.com/video/Pics0X7vRCY/w-d-xo.html .
      Also, keeping the same 15-inch wheels will result in more of a DRASTIC 'change', in improving fuel economy and agility. While the larger 16-inch wheels will most likely make the vehicles ride more firm... Since you will have to opt for lower profile tires.
      If you consider getting thicker 185mm tires, over the stock 175mm tires. Expect to see a slight drop in fuel economy. Since more traction/friction will occur. Resulting in more resistance, and a drop in combined fuel economy. Overall, I recommend you upgrade to the same sized 15-inch alloy rims with the wider tread. • @DriveAndBeDriven

      Thanks for replying, Nikhil. I am glad this information helped. If you go for the same sized 15-inch rims, you will still have to purchase wider tires that match the wider width of the 185mm rims. You, unfortunately, cannot put 185 width tires on 175 width rims, or vice versa. However, if you can find rims that have the same 175mm width and are also 15-inch alloys, you could technically use the same tires that you currently have on your Honda Fit. Also, I strongly recommend you check out my Alloy vs. Steel Wheel video (posted above). It will help with your decision greatly.

      Hi, Raj! Indeed! You are 100% correct.
      In the video, I wasn't referring to same diameter rims which was a flaw on my end. Sorry about that. But, you totally got it correct. If both rims are 19", but one is lower profile, it'll still be able to fit the same sized brakes inside. 😎👍🏼

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      s.khan, Thanks for commenting! Low profile tires will probably most likely work! They will most likely give the vehicle more of a planted feel to the road. You can possibly even add slightly wider tires, too. Keep in mind, though, that wider tires typically result in less fuel efficiency. Also, if you go for low profile tires your ride will be affected by making it a little more jarring, and feel more harsh over road imperfections. I hope this helps! 😉

    Does high profile tires have less acceleration? I’ll be waiting for your response.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! This is a great question. The difference may be negligible in the real-world, but typically higher-profile tires will result in better straight line speed thanks to them having more sidewall and being a bit less stiff (aka more flexible) to accommodate the immediate rush of torque acceleration.
      While lower-profile tires will probably result in a higher probability of "wheel hop". But, lower-profile tires will tend to handle better (and feel more planted/hugged to the road) due to them having less "lateral sidewall flex" during fast cornering.
      I hope this answer helps you out. Let me know if you have anymore questions! I will reply much sooner this time! My apologies for the delayed reply.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely correct! In this example, I used two extreme scenarios. But, in the real-world, more new SUVs tend to be in between high and low profile. Therefore, it would be best for you to compare tire sized amongst competitors and go from there.
      But, remember things may look a certain way on paper, but once you get behind the wheel it may feel different. So, I stronf urge you test drive cars before completely ruling them out of consideration (especially if it's just due to tire sizes).
      I hope this helps. Best wishes on your new car shopping journey. I have reviewed quite a few new SUVs on this channel. So feel free to check them out. I recently tested the 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid, the 2021 Kia Seltos, and the 2021 Ford Escape! Let me know if you have questions, Ludelyn. :)

    hi. I'm using 235 40 18 tyres now, I want to upgrade to 245 35 19 wheels. I know if the tyres become wider, it will effect the acceleration and making the steering wheel heavier to turn. but are these changes gonna be very obvious (especially the one with steering)??? thx

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +peter zhang, Thanks so much for commenting! Changing your tire width will most likely result in a pretty noticable change. All cars are different, but a change of 10mm may result in a pretty noticable outcome. Especially, if you are considering to make the profile lower (by adding larger 19-inch rims).
      I recommend you talk to a mechanic or "car person" that you trust to examine your car in order to give you a more accurate answer.
      Also, was that tire "setup" a factory option at the time the vehicle was new? If so, ypu could probably check the adverse affects of that tire choice.

    195/55R16

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, Rajpoot! Regarding you specific scenario, here are my thoughts:
      The 185/65R16 tires will experience more "lateral sidewall flex" due to the ratio of tire width vs tire profile. Essentially, the sidewall on vehicles with this tire setup will feel as if they have more of a "flexible sidewall". This would result in the car feeling as if it is wobbling slightly while driving around corners at increased speeds. A few pros to this tire setup is less road contact, which (in general) will result in higher fuel-efficiency numbers. Also, a higher profile tire will equate to more sidewall, meaning you'll typically have a more "plush" driving experience.
      While on the other hand, the 195/55R16 tires will experience more of a "planted confidence" while cornering at higher speeds. This is due to less sidewall flex, and more width to grip the road surface. A few cons to this tire setup is more road contact which (in general) will result in lower fuel-efficiency numbers and slightly higher cabin noise. Also, a lower profile tire will equate to less sidewall, meaning you'll typically have a bit more of a "harsh" experience when riding over road imperfections.
      I hope this information helps you with your Suzuki Baleno. My apologies for the delayed reply. Please subscribe for more awesome content coming soon. Thanks so much, Rajpoot! Best wishes to you and your Suzuki. :)

    Low profile I assume will have a lower rolling resistance and better or higher mpg? Wheel damage more likely with low profile tires and cost effectiveness is leaning towards normal would also be my assumption?

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks again for commenting, Thomas! Your assumptions are quite spot on. Low profile tires typically increase fuel economy due to them having "less tire" (less mass/weight) than a high profile tire. Therefore, less energy is needed to get them to a rest (stopping) and less energy is needed to get them in motion (accelerating).
      Also, wheel damage is absolutely more likely with low profile tires. This is mainly because there will be less sidewall protecting the rim (and this will ultimately result in raising the height of the rims 'contact point' in relation to the ground). Therefore, curb rash usually just impacts the tire (which is less costly). Rather than damaging the rims and the tires (which can be more costly).
      Once again, stay tuned for more videos coming soon, Thomas Sutherland! If you have any future video suggestions, feel free to let me know. Thank you.

      Hey there, Ahmad! As far as handling goes, low-profile tires tend to handle better due to the stiffer sidewall.

    how about fuel economy...which of the tire profile is better?

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Muhammed! The profile of a tire typically doesn't affect fuel economy. Technically, if you get a higher profile tire, you will be looking at a lighter unsprung weight (typically). So, in turn, that may affect fuel economy, but for the most part tire profile won't cause any drastic changes to fuel economy.
      Tire width would arguably have more of an impact due to more road contact. The wider the tires the less efficient they tend to be (in general).

    • @DriveAndBeDriven

      Hi there, Loony! Regarding you specific scenario, here are my thoughts:
      High-profile narrow tires will experience more "lateral sidewall flex" due to the ratio of tire width vs tire profile. Essentially, the sidewall on vehicles with this tire setup will feel as if they have more of a flexible sidewall. Hi mate. Good video. Would you consider 18’’ low profile or a good in between option?

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question, Stacey! Tire profile is actually based on the aspect ratio of a tire. In other words, an 18" tire can have different aspect ratios... To find the aspect ratio of a tire, it will be labeled on the sidewall. Usually, a tire will be listed reading something like this: P225/55R18. The 55 would be the aspect ratio.
      The higher the number, the higher the profile (or the more rubber you have showing on the sidewall of the tire). Generally, anything under an aspect ratio of 50 is considered low-profile.
      I hope my response helps you out. If you have anymore questions (or need further clarification), let me know. I am here to help! Thanks for leaving a comment. I'm glad you enjoyed this video, Stacey. Take care, and best wishes with your tire selection!

      It honestly comes down to personal preference... Which do you prefer? Here are some tips to help you out:
      Wider tires tend to offer more road contact, thus you'll receive lower fuel-efficieny and more road noise inside the cabin. But, you'll notice better handling/grip (in general).
      Thinner tires tend to offer less road contact, thus you'll receive higher-efficiency and less road noise inside the cabin. But, you'll notice worse handling/grip (in general) due to a characteristics called "lateral sidewall flex". Meaning the tire will hold its shape a bit less around corners, which you may feel if driving at higher speeds.
      Regarding pricing, yes! Since you generally get more rubber with wider tires, they tend to be a bit more expensive.

      Hi there. Road noise tends to be more dependent on tire width based on my particular experiences. But, technically, noise can also be due to the amount of side wall. Less sidewall typically means less air and less rubber. Thus, less sound insulation/absorption. As a result, you may have more sound energy radiating from the lower-profile wheels, if the change is drastic enough.

      @@DriveAndBeDriven Thanx for response. It is difficult for me to make up my mind whether to upgrade to lower profile or not. My car is pretty weak, wheels are pretty narrow and high and even though the car has only 67hp and 112nm of torque, there is barely enough grip. I'm afraid that if I put more high profile tyres (not extremely) and wider wheels that I may lose on grip due to skitting in rain. Or maybe if I also upgrade to high quality tyires that wouldn't be a problem? But then, since a car is weak there would be a lot of strain on the engine due to coefficient of inertia. Or maybe if I upgrade to lighter, aluminium wheels, that would equalize because the total radius would stay the same and high profile tyres also cause some inertia. I'm pretty much stuck there, I drive a small European fart Skoda Fabia mk1 1.2htp. And I would also like not to reduce fuel economy.

    im driving a 7seater AUV, most of time carrying 5people. stock tires are 185/65/r15.
    would changing it to 185/70/r14 deliver better handling and ride comfort?
    thanks and more power.

      I appreciate you considering to view this video, collapsar27! Going for smaller R14 tires with a slightly higher profile will result in a slightly more comfortable ride, but it is important to keep in mind that this may result in your 7-seat SUV to be a bit more top heavy... The comfort won't change dramatically, though.
      So, smaller R14 probably won't result in the greatest change. Especially since comfort also has to do with dampening and suspension tuning. Furthermore, those smaller R14 tires may change the appearance of your vehicle, too. I hope this helps. If you any further questions, or need clarification, feel free to ask me.

      Hi there, Jassima! I am not 100% sure whether or not those new wheels will clear in the wheel well when turning, going over harsh road imperfections, etc. But, I'd expect it to be no issue. Just double and triple check.
      As far as quality goes, a slightly higher ratio the 2nd number "50" will allow for a higher profile which will result in a more cushioned ride. Not to mention, going with a narrower tire will also help with ride quality since less road contact will be made, but the difference will mostly be marginal considering you buy tires of the same brand and quality. But, of course, if you look into tires that are designed more for comfort as opposed to sporty driving dynamics, no doubt that setup will feel a bit more plush.
      Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Let me know if you have any more questions. I will try my best to respond much sooner next time. Feel free to SUBSCRIBE too. Take care, Jassima!

      Thanks so much for commenting, stockingandblossom1! You are 100% correct! High profile tires can totally be stylish. I was just saying how generally, low-profile tires tend to offer more style (typically). Also, that SS Cragar looks stellar with low-profile tires... Very classy, yet aggressive.

    I have tyre in my i20 with the size 185/65 R 14" 86 H but now I want to replace this tyre and shopkeeper recommended me new tyre size 185/70 R 14" 88 T forcomfort ride. I would like to know about the pros and cons with new profile tyre. What's mean by less road feel with high profile tyres and less break rooms in high profile tyre. Any less breaking grip with high profile tyres ????? And any odometer reading change if I choose this new profile. Should I go with this or remain with old profile tyres. I want reply as soon because I want to change my tyre as soon as possible. thanks in Advance

    Nice information but a little bit misleading. Low or high profile tires has nothing to do with the brakes. It does with diameter of the wheels.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.
      Indeed! The point I was trying to make was more in a theoretical scenario. Meaning, if the diameter of two wheels were the same (one high-profile and one low-profile), the low profile would have more room for brakes.
      But, you're correct. A bit misleading. Maybe I'll make an updated version in the future to help work out the kinks. After all this is an older video, and I have gotten much more knowledgeable over the years.
      Thanks for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated, Welly! Take care, and please subscribe for more videos coming soon.

      Thanks so much for commenting, Tuff Gong! I appreciate you choosing to view this video. You are 100% correct I didn't mention the pricing of high-profile tires vs. low-profile tires in this video. This is because tires vary greatly, but if you are looking at two of the same make/type/quality of tires, the higher profile tire is usually slightly more expensive. This is because they typically contain more rubber. As a result, "higher profile tire's" prices tend to be slightly higher when compared to "lower profile tires".

    Great video! But unless you're a car maniac and all about racing, less/more room for brakes won't mean anything as 95% of people and I am being generous here won't change their stock brake system (rotors, caliber and pads). Furthermore, I am not really sure how the low profile tires have a better road feel as a pro -since it makes your ride stiffer- and vise versa regarding the high profile tires as a con, I believe you switched them, unless you mean by a "better road feel" as having a more precise steering and lesser body roll around corners which again I won't call it a better road feel.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much!! Glad you enjoyed this video. Also, I truly appreciate your constructive feedback. You are absolutely correct!
      Unless you're really looking at the nitty-gritty (and trying to track your car), having less room for brakes is negligible. Honestly, you were being generous. That probably applies to about 1% of the people who watched this video (and that honestly might be a bit too generous). Lol!
      Regarding the "better road feel" as a pro, I was referring to having less body roll and more precise steering... Understandably, this doesn't really equate "better road feel". So, I totally understand where you're coming from. My apologies for not clarifying! :)
      I should definitely consider making an updated version of this video since it's been a few years. I have learned a lot since then, and would love to share it in a more high-quality production!

    Not one person in the first 10-20 comments have stayed the truth about low profile tires. They go flat!!

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! You are correct. Due to low-profile tires being more firm and typically having a bit less flex, they are more prone to going flat. Also, they tend to be more costly to maintain due to their higher vulnerability to potholes and curb rash.
      Thanks for leaving your comment!! Please subscribe, if you enjoyed this video. Take care, Sven! 💯🙌🏽

    What about the grip?? High profile should be significantly better.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, Pawel! You're correct to a certain extent. Grip is highly dependent on the width of a tire, but surprisingly profile also plays a role.
      High-profile tires will experience more "lateral sidewall flex" due to the ratio of tire width versus tire profile. This, of course, could be remedied by wider tires.
      If you're looking for just straigh line acceleration, yes! High-profile tires tend to be a bit more superior due to them having more flex to accommodate the high amount of acceleration torque. While, a lower-profile will have a higher probability of "wheel hop".
      I hope this information helps. If so, please subscribe. Thanks so much! Take care, Pawel. 😁👍🏼
