It’s easy to get overly excited after an NFL player’s first professional season. But, as the saying goes, “it’s a race, not a marathon." And that can definitely apply to the career of any NFLer.
Some rookies throughout the years have caught everyone by surprise with a jaw-dropping first-season. But unfortunately, many of these rookie sensations fail to build off their promising debuts. Call it beginner’s luck, we suppose.
Here are 10 NFL players who had great rookie seasons, but turned out to be busts.

I got one you missed, Steve Slaton. Rushed for almost 1300 yds as a rookie in 2008 and 10 total TD’s, then only 600 yds the rest of his career. Tanked my ‘09 fantasy team! 😂

Injuries derailed many of these of players from building on their stellar rookie season's. RG3, miss management by Mike Shanahan was nothing short of criminal. Go Hawks
@Christopher Bingham yeah i thought for a long time it was mikes ego but after doing the research, RG3 was the real culprit. Apparently Mike wanted to sit him out for the rest of the season because the long term injury concerns he had but RG3 said no he play through it and now look at him.
I blame Mike but RG3 ego and attitude and failure to progres at reading defenses and going through pregressions really added to it all as well.

No matter how big, RG3,'s ego was or bad his attitude may or may not be, look at his play before his catastrophic injury. Mike Shanahan, was a 2 time SB, winning HC with years of experience, , it was his job and his responsibility to manage his rookie QB, better than that. Go Hawks

Cousins had proved he could manage things by then..but RG3 did himself no favors fumbling the ball twice a game, not reading D to make adjustments, and never getting off his first read...and i was a high rg3 at one point.

MS, was a two time winning SB, HC, RG3, with years of experience, RG, was a rookie. And you're telling me that a HC, is going to defer to a rookie. Teams pick QB's, in the 1st round to be their franchise QB. If and when they actually become a franchise, QB, then and only then will the dynamics of the relationship change and the HC, will at times defer to his QB and give him the latitude to do things his way. RG3 was at least 2 seasons away from that , so it had to be MS call. Go Hawks
Eddie Lacy had 2-1,000 yard seasons but I'd still call him a bust given he only lasted a handful of seasons. Injuries and over eating can hamper the best of us lol
There were several of these entries that are odd.
No one remembers the season where Bradford went undefeated before getting injured with the Vikings

Remember when Fisher was his head coach? Nothing else needs to be said about why bradford didn't develop into a great qb.
Undefeated? I could've swore he lost to the Eagles in Philly that year he was on the Vikings.
I'm sure RG3 wouldn't be on this list if Washington took good care of him.
@Christopher Bingham Damn Straight, the team wanted him to sit out in the playoffs for the future...he argued with the coaches, you can even see them trying to pull him out in the playoff game when they saw how slow he was moving...so they coddled his ego and said "okay if you say you are good to go then that is your risk to take"....love how blaming Washington is the go-to here...
Na RG3 added to his demise by having an ego, and not learning to read defense's, and go through progressions.
Injuries don’t make them busts. Especially since most players only have 2-3 great seasons during their whole career

If they were held to be the next league superstar and didn't become that wether that's injury attitude or whatever then they are a bust. Injuries are a part of the game and unfortunately some people just can't hold up for long in the NFL. Busts they remain

It's so unfair to put Griffin on this. That knee injury destroyed everything which was out of Griffin's control.
RG3 brought in a very short lived Redskins bandwagon.
I’m not sure about this video...RGIII came out in 2012-2020...that’s not a bust. His career wasn’t as good as it could’ve been, but he wasn’t a bust.

He had back to back 1000 yard seasons than he tore his acl this past season but looks to be rehabbing well that proves that he was a top running back it would be injuries plagued him not that he was a one hit wonder
@@Z_Rodriguez13 well that was the same thing with RGlll tbf. All the talent in the world, a potential to be one of the best, but terrible management and coaching along with injuries hold them down. It’d be sad to see that happen to Saquon, so I hope he doesn’t have an injury riddled career. Kid has serious HOF potential if he stays healthy

Anyone who has watched the things/throws he created/made. Would never believe it was all just a "fluke" or "lucky" season of football... He seriously made a handful of throws in his first 2 starts that I don't think I've seen anyone besides Arod or P.Manning in their primes make. Pretty sure it's why we don't hear that kinda talk from the analysts on ESPN/NFLN even bring such a thing up! He's definitely gonna make Dolphins fans jealous until the time comes when they draft a young QB they won't have to bench halfway through the 3rd quarter in every close game

Bell had a better sophomore season than he did a rookie season. 3 all pro selections too, I don’t think calling him a bust is at all fair.

The one that immediately come to mind, before getting into the video, is Jamarcus Russel.
Here in Mobile nobody I talk to about JR can tell me exactly why he had a good LSU career, but was such a bust at quarterback in the NFL.

@@fratkinjonathan047 because in college natural talent can often cover personal shortcomings. He was the big fish in a small pond. Then he went to the ocean and found out he was nothing but a minnow and being used to having everything handed to him developed the worst work ethic possible.
Video idea: Teams that have had great players at specific positions throughout their history. Like the Seahawks have had excellent(and underrated, ie Chris Warren) running backs through most of the franchises' existence.
Not sure if it's already been done but I reccomend making videos on.... Top 10 Statistical Seasons for every position. A different video per position.

Try some video about some promising players but counterwise. Guys who were drafted high, busts their first year, but who bloomed better lately or in another team. I know that it's not an easy task but for TPS? C'mon Man☺

One you guys missed was Mark Anderson. Defensive End out of Alabama. Drafted by my Chicago Bears in 2006 in the 5th round. Recorded 12 sacks his rookie year and never came close to that production after that
