Since I haven't seen it in the commentary, I'll go ahead. At the end of the whole monologue about his screenplay, it all went south with the studio. But at the end of his stage emoting, I remember the phrase; "well, what do you know, a fucking giant spider!" Watch Kevin Smith's stage show. Anyway, enjoy.

In Will Smith's defense in choosing this movie, before The Matrix, the Wachowskis weren't very well-known. Also, he had just made a huge hit (Men in Black) with Barry Sonnenfeld, the same director hired for Wild Wild West. In that context, it seemed like a safer bet.

I have a theory that the original script for this came out as a very dark civil war drama, and the studio mandated the comedic elements be added later. That would explain the tonal problems. Because if you strip out the comedy, what's left is a story about a Southern inventor who gave everything to the war only to be betrayed versus a Black army captain seeking revenge for the slaughter of a town of free Blacks.

Sean, not to be rude, but the blu-ray version of The Matrix (specifically the first film) is kind of a waste of money . That version is infamous for being digitally color grated greener than the films original theatrical release and the DVD release (You can find comparison of frames from the blu-ray with the same frames from 35mm theatrical prints online showing their differences) to the point that the movie looked nothing like its original release (or how I say it, printed on a dollar bill). On the plus side, the 4k blu-ray is a far better version since Warner Bros. made no alterations to the film outside of a digital restoration to the original negative (they had to for a film that was almost 20 years old).
