I don't know what you people are talking about. The description clearly says 1988, not 1998. And I certainly wouldn't have entered the wrong year by mistake and corrected it afterwards because I'm infallible as you well know.

I think it's funny how, with this review, you ran out of stuff to talk about the primary film, "Cocktail", at 10:41 and then talked about other bad films from that year.

I think there's an even simpler answer to the riddle of why this movie won Worst Picture than Rain Man - this movie itself was a massive hit, the 9th highest-grossing movie of the year in fact! So basically a similar situation to the Rambo movie.

The making of Cocktail was mainly the inspiration behind the creation of TGI Fridays. It all started when Alan Stillman opened the first TGI Fridays restaurant in 1965, in New York. He lived in a neighborhood with many airline stewardesses, fashion models, secretaries, and other young, single people on the East Side of Manhattan near the Queensboro Bridge and hoped that opening a bar would help him meet women. At the time, Stillman's choices for socializing were non-public cocktail parties or beer-drinking taverns that women usually did not visit. He said that "There was no public place for people between, say, 23 to 37 years old, to meet." He sought to recreate the comfortable cocktail party atmosphere in public despite having no experience in the restaurant business. Sounds a bit like Tom Cruise's character learning the bartending business.

2:31-2:37 - Well, to be fair, Obi-Wan wasn't exactly a saint in the original trilogy.
4:02-4:09 - Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God-given right.
7:55 - And he drank himself even stupider when he made The Mummy. Come on, you all knew this was coming.
9:24 - Doesn't have nearly as much ring to it as "You complete me."

Some bars do get so busy that 10-20 people just shout their orders at the bartender. But that's usually a nightclub on a Saturday night or an actual bar during a big sports game and both of those cases usually don't happen that much. It sure as hell doesn't happen at a restaurant bar like TGI Fridays or Applebees.

This trope always irritates me to no end; the young, ambitious person who says they have no plans to start a family (have kids) that ALWAYS ends up changing their mind. Would it kill Hollywood to have at least a few characters stick to their guns when it comes to children? Not everyone wants them or has to have them; this ain't the 1950s anymore.

Okay I usually think Bobcat's schtick gets tiresome but that seems to be because the people behind the camera don't know when enough is enough.
But you should check out Shakes The Clown if you haven't already. Bobcat directed and stars in it, and Martin Scorsese calls it the Citizen Kane of drunken clown movies.

I hate that I’m old enough to know this.... T.G.I. Friday’s ny was actually the place that popularized the style of bottle flipping etc for the mainstream.
It was famous for it at this time so it’s probably not unreasonable to show a scene like this - as it would have seemed exotic to everyone else / but a weekend at T.G.I. Friday’s
The restaurant is nothing like it used to be in the 80s and you’ve only seen this in Vegas because of Friday’s back then.

For me personally I agree with you Hot to Trot is not only bad it's not even so bad it's good while Mac and Me would be a close second one of the upsides is that it gave Paul Rudd his favorite prank to pull on Conan. I feel like Bobcat is a better director while just ok as a supporting actor provided he's given a good script two good examples are his roles in Hercules as Pain and the guy who goes crazy in Scrooged.

I don't remember anyone disliking this film when it came out. Jamie Foxx even used call Cruise, 'Mr. Cocktail', because the film was so successful. Cocktail was the 7th highest grossing movie of 1988. To compare, Beetlejuice was 10th. I think since people now see the RT score, they automatically think that's how the film was thought of back then, but it was not. Rotten Tomatoes wasn't even around when the movie came out.
Cocktail is a really good movie.

Fun (personal) fact: I actually saw Mac and Me before I saw E.T.
Let me explain. E.T. was in theaters the year I was born and I am guessing my family had seen it because I was flat out forbidden from watching it. My grandma thought the movie was too violent if memory serves so Mac and Me was something I watched instead. Despite the fact that I am very well aware that it is a crappy movie, I still have fond memories of watching it (remember I like Hudson Hawk and Howard the Duck so... I am very familiar with cinematic excrement). My grandma didn't like it... but enjoyed watching it with me.
Another fun fact: I was forbidden from watching E.T. but I used to watch Alien Nation the television series with my grandma (yes, the same one). She had... weird rules. Some things I wasn't allowed to watch and yet other things was perfectly fine. Wasn't allowed to watch Nightmare on Elm Street nor Friday the 13th... but watched the sequels with her full knowledge (Also watched Tales from the Crypt and Tales From The Otherside). Wasn't allowed to watch Heavy Metal (I doubt I need to explain why) by my DAD, my grandma said it would be fine. :D Her logic with that one was: "It's a cartoon... she loves cartoons!" Enjoyed listening to my dad try to tell my grandma why I couldn't... while they were actively watching it and she was in the same room. My family is weird.

Cocktail is Kind of a Diss-Movie against Tom Cruise if you listen closer to the Dialogs told to Tom's Character. The Movie would be great if there actualy wouldn't be a Happy-Ending. I would make the Ending like this: His Girlfriend doesn't forgive him and he gets then beaten up by the Bodyguards of her Dad and get kicked out to the Streets. He becames a total lunatic Stalker then and after he cathes her up to try to talk to her again then she uses a Protection-Spray on him and calls the Police. He gets arrested and later he commits Suicide by hanging himself up in Jail. That would be such a wonderful Ending and the Movie would be so much better :)

What’s with the ageism? Why are you judgemental of lovers with an age gap? That’s a bit shallow. You also haven’t paid attention to the details of the film. He didn’t just run into Jordan in New York, she told him when they met that she worked at Jerrys Deli. Also, Coughlin admitted he was full of shit in his suicide note. I know it’s not a great film but Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue are fun to watch and the 80s nostalgia in the film is wonderful.
