  • This is Malaysia, the most obese nation in Southeast Asia where the obesity rate is expected to more than double within the next 10 years. I wanted to find out why is it the unhealthiest country in Southeast Asia
I interviewed Malaysians to get their take on the rising obesity rate to figure out why are Malaysians obese, are Malaysian's trying to get healthy and what is the solution to this problem as well as getting a first hand look into how a 400lbs man, Joshua Michael a Malaysian content creator changed his life for the better.
Driving conversations in hopes to tackle the rising obesity problem in Malaysia one step at a time.

Hi Kevin, thanks for shedding light on this issue.
Another group of possibly obese people hidden in plain sight in Malaysia are the skinny fat.
There are lots of information out there now saying maintaining a good proportionate of muscle mass to body fat is protective from all sorts of health issues & also cognitive issues in old age. It is now considered ok to look less than slender if you have a healthy percentage of muscle mass.
I think the issue in Malaysia is also our choice of street food snacks. If you notice in Thailand & Indonesia, they have street food snacks that are protein rich such as grilled eggs, grilled meat on skewers, protein rich gorengan options like tempe & taufu and more savoury less sweet salads, such as green papaya salad & gado-gado. In Malaysia, our snack mostly consist of simple carbs with no protein as they are usually made from flour and quite a number of them are deep fried &/or sweet too. Correct me if I'm wrong, for salads, the only street food snack salad we have is the sweet sauce laden fruit rojak. Although it looks like a healthy option, the sugar content is high from the sauce. In addition to that, there is also sugar from some of fruits, and sugar are simple carbs.
If we aren't one those lucky people who have superior genetics of both long lifespan & healthspan (haven't we all heard of stories of people who smoked like a chimney, never exercised in their life, yet still mentally sharp & walking unassisted right till their 90s), by eating less processed food, ensuring there is sufficient protein & fibre intake daily & slowing down the loss of muscle mass as we age through strength training, all throughout our lifespan is one of our best bet to have an equally long healthspan & in maintaining good mobility.
Long gone the notion that looking slim is healthy, because quite often, they are skinny fat.

Yes I agree, we all need a healthy level of muscle mass as well as needing a healthy level of body fat. I believe body scans to determine weight by measuring fat percentage and muscle mass should be standardized to ensure people don’t put on excessive body fat.
I think more education as well on how we gain and lose weight, the importance of quality food in our bodies in how our total well being will be.
Quite a complex issue to get us to be healthy but it starts with conversations like these.

My thought is the government should implement sugar tax, maybe for 100%. Double the price for sugar, creamer, soft drink, etc. The collected sugar tax should go into the fund for counter obesity issues.

Ived seen a tourist vlog said, its the good thing in malaysia shops and restaurant open up to late night even 24 hour, the city never sleep, not like their country mostly closed 8-9pm lol. I think, govt should start build and promote FREE GYM center for locals esp in urban area, just how to figure out how it work.

    KNOWLEDGE.
Apart from healthy lifestyle, we have to know what and when to eat.
Simple basics like, Calory In - Calory Out AND to know your own body. Not everyone is the same.
Another basic like the current weather/climate of your current location; especially in some states these days that is very2 hot. Then try to eat food that is less spicy or the opposite; so there will be balance. Of course it depends on your own body.
How to know? Thats why we need to do at least yearly full medical checkup. That way, we might know if there are any health issues, etc as some ailments are very2 hidden or slowly processing and might need further and detailed health screening.
Some research suggest to eat based on your blood type; I myself not sure about this but hey...sometimes if you are too rigid with your food intake also not good lah..
Remember, there are other factors to health issue as well...stress, mental, spritually, etc.
Some people may have good results by just changing their rice type, some might not. so do your own research and check with doctors and health specialist based on your body and medical issue.

In Malaysia, most fat guys have this nickname BOB...... short form for Badan Orang Besar ( Big Man's Bod)
We love lots of salty, sweet stuff and oily food. We don't eat vegetables....even vegetables are cooked in coconut milk
Nasi Lemak, Ayam Rendang, Roti Canai, Sambal.... finished off with Air Sirap, sweet artificial coloured drinks....and cakes
Bro hope you hit 1k soon man!

Busty and Thick is the new sexy i guess...sup tulang is considered as retro or old school already, especially with Tyra Banks in the west promoting all sorts of sizes as their models now. As for me, we are not that severe yet, the majority of us are still sup tulang. Maybe because we ate a lot but that mostly will only happen during the ends of every month, the rest of the day is dieting or puasa, because most of our street food now is considered as luxury food already...our current economic situation, will somehow, help in terms of keeping the diet balanced. But i can't promise anything for the foreigner from the west, because their buying power here, is quit strong. 😊
