Fabricating a Canoe Motor Mount (and Test Drive)

  • Recently I picked up a 55 lb thrust trolling motor for a good deal. Of course i had to stick it on my aluminum canoe and see how fast she can go. I never tested the speed but it's alot faster than I can paddle! I believe the motor is a motorguide X3 or something like that. I used a 100 Ah deep cycle battery to power it, and a 50 amp inline breaker as a safety precaution. It runs really smooth, and I can't wait to try it in a longer creek or something.

I’ve been thinking about mounting mine on the end of the V. Have to get mine down and see what’s comfortable.

Thanks Sneaky Z! Despite the so so production values this is one of the best videos I could find on this particular build(there’s a lot of them). I’m about to begin my own install as well and I wanted some more info regarding extending the power lines so I can install the battery in the bow for ballast. You addressed this issue perfectly 👌 I also have to salute your bravery in testing an unrestrained open terminal battery in an aluminum boat⚡️Good show, man!

Been there, done that! They turn great to the right, but poorly to the left! Motor needs to be mounted on centerline of boat to track properly. Currently planning an air canoe. This will be my 2nd air canoe build, first was 6.5 up with 24 inch prop... New build will have a 225cc 2 stroke with a 32 inch prop. Will work so much better in Lilly pads and swamp grass.

far be it from me to mention this but no one else has yet.
Bein experimental, maybe throw something that floats on board. If you have a few seconds you can always dump the beer outta the cooler and keep the lid tight.

I would of used square "C' clamps ,for the cross piece, and used the holes already there. Saving a lot of time. Also, you were running the canoe "Stern" forward, instead of the "Bow"

been my experience he's set the canoe up correctly.
You'd want to turn it around if there was the weight of 2 on board
which a small battery does not constitute.

How straight does the canoe stay with it mounted on the side?

  • @rockypecheur

Or - 2 pieces of wood, loosely joined by rope/zip ties. Clamp motor directly to hull - power is closer to centerline.

Nice. I'm about to do a similar setup but for a 17ft rowboat. I'm wondering whether to go up to 55lb or if that'd just be overkill? How much run time (or distance?) are you getting off your 100 Ah battery?

Nice project but two thoughts on your video. First, get more light in your work area. You were back lit and it was very dark and hard to see what you were doing. Any old light would help. You can even get a cheap clamp light at a department store. You know the kind, spring clamp that can clip to a thin shelf or pole and then on the other end there’s a small conical shade to direct the light. Some are just the clip and light and others have a flex shaft. Second, for your pond video, set up a camera on the shoreline then you can go past at the different speeds and it will be much easier and obvious for us viewers to see how well it’s working. Just a few thoughts, free advice as it were, weather you use them or not is up to you. I blame any or all improper words on spellcheck. You have a great day.

I like the idea of the canoe with the murder but I'm thinking about a two-stroke motor for my canoe what do you think will it be too fast

Building mine right now. But making outriggers for it, cause swimming and losing the gear, no thanks. Cool vid, cheers.

Thanks, and good luck. I’ll make a battery tie down eventually so that it’ll stay with the boat if it flips.

@@SneakyZeke you'll also want to account for the required buoyancy to keep the canoe at the service once it fills with water. It's more than you think. My pontoons are 8" in diameter with nose cones. Total length about 35" and they each have a buoyant force of ~50lbs. Minus the fact they weigh about 7lbs each.
