My Fishing Canoe Setup with Trolling Motor Mount

  • this is how I setup my canoe when i go out fishing. all wood was hand cut by me i still need to stain and polyurethane the two pole holders but i wanted to test it out on the water before "sealing it up"... which was a good idea because my buddies bait caster doesn't fit so i need to bore his out a little more. Also I am going to drill several small hole along the edge to hang additional lures and gear, other than that no problems yet. Old Town 174 canoe(S.S. Fish Sticks), Minn Kota 30lb thrust trolling motor, Everstart Maxx-29 Marine battery, 40L Outdoor products dry bag, net Dicks Sporting Goods, recorded on Droid Razr Maxx

    Chris:
    This is some great advice.
    (And as a former pilot I can attest to the effectiveness of a physical checklist, but this is the first time I thought of doing the same thing with a canoe).
    I initially found this video because I was searching for the specifics of mounting an electric trolling motor on a canoe, but I found out that the rest of the detailed info here is invaluable, especially for a fairly new canoe owner like myself.
    Very well done!
    Thank you!

    Great job! I made a similar trolling motor mount. Attached differently but same principle. Some of your other ideas are very good and I will incorporate them when we take our canoe out next time. I like the idea of how you transport it with the foam to protect the roof of the car. Is that all you use and you find no damage (even rubbing from the canoe shifting back and forth) on your car roof. If true I may go that route. Thanks for the video.

    Using a checklist is smart. I found when going on diving trips that to just lack one O-ring can ruin the day, same goes for business trips. It takes a certain amount of discipline to create such a list and then use it, but the alternative is worse.

    Nice job Chris. Where did you get the little red cup holder that snaps on the side of your canoe? Are you happy with your Minnkota motor? What do you have to pay to register your canoe in your state since it carries a motor? Have fun on your trips and be careful. Sponge is very handy for a canoe.

    thinking about getting one for some small stream fishing with the flat bottom you could make it throuck the small rocky rapids and.also easily drag it through the gravel bars and spots where the river is only 2 inches deep

    I believe the registration number on the hull is required because a motor has been mounted to the canoe.

  • @chriswagoner2007
    @chriswagoner2007  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    David Whitehorn I've taken it on four consecutive trips without recharging the battery, my trips usually last between 2.5 and 5 hours using all 5 speeds on the trolling motor going with the current and fighting the current to stay in one spot. about halfway through the last trip you could tell that the battery was starting to die. with two people in the canoe its not going to run you up on the beach. it will get you close enough that the front person can get out and pull the canoe up

    • @ThePols87
      @ThePols87 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chris Wagoner You shouldn't deplete your deep cycle batteries like that. Don't let them drop below 45% and always recharge after every use. You'll prolong your battery's life. Good video though. How has the mount held up and the blazing 3mp/h top speed?

    • @chriswagoner2007

    Landed here looking for a good way to mount the transducer on a fish finder, but I'm definitely stealing the sponge idea! Nice work on your set up. I put the motor on, but now I think I need to cut some thin wood to add a rudder to the shaft of the trolling motor... Try one out! I betting it will work, haha. ;0

    I bought a canoe and it came with a motor mount. Going to buy a motor, but just want to ask you what else I need besides battery. Do you need to store battery in a compartment? How do I charge a battery. May sound like a dumb question but I'm a mom trying to figure this out :) Also, where did you get the cup holders for the canoe. Can I buy pole holders? Thanks so much, I love your set up

    • @chrismouchet1056
      @chrismouchet1056 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They sell water proof battery cases for like $25 and the cup holders on Amazon and for the motor I use a minn Kota c2 40 lb thrust. Also don't forget to register your canoe with the DNR in your state and put tabs on it because it is now a motorized boat. Be safe and have fun :)

    My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

      The cheapest and easiest would be to train your dog to sit and lay on command, Get a dogtra trainingcollar. Other than that you would have to lower the center of gravity in the canoe By lowering your seat or adding weights to the bottom

      Hi im thinking of getting same motor and battery how long can you run it for ? And does that trolling. Motor kick up so you can beach it easily? Like a normal gas outbrord does ?

    • @chriswagoner2007
      @chriswagoner2007  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roman Max it will last 2-3 trips down the river (our trip is about 2miles/2-4hrs) before you notice the battery dying. We hardly ever paddle so it's running the whole time. Yes the motor flips up which comes in handy when the current throws you toward a log. All and all I feel this is a perfect combination, if a fire destroyed everything tomorrow I would buy the exact same setup I have now.
