Chinese SUV Fight! Haval H6 vs new Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max (in-depth comparison)

- Just 10 years ago, when a number of Chinese brands entered the South African market and then hastily retreated, it seemed that the established brands were safe from Chinese competition.
Fast forward ten years and the situation has changed dramatically. Haval is a top 5 brand in SA and Chery leapt into the top 10 within 1 year of trading.
The two SUVs featured here represent the flagship variants of their respective brands (the Haval H6 hybrid notwithstanding) and yet both are available at a price point below R700 000 (as of October 2023) which in today's market represents excellent value, especially with the level of tech and comfort features fitted as standard equipment.

My vote goes to the 2024 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max. Reasons; has 184KW Battery Power output,Panaromic sunroof ,7passenger seats,voice activation etc. However it comes short of heated&cooling seats and more ground clearance for me. Anyways CONGRATS to it❤. It won the Challenge and has answered all questions from this assessment😊😊😊😊

Hello, I own the Tiggo 8 Pro Max.. it does have heated and cooling seats. Both driver and passenger. Wonder why the vehicle driven in this video doesn't have that option.
I think it's in the menus on the touch screen and doesn't have dedicated buttons which is why he may have missed it. It's standard. Also, congrats on the Chery. It is truly the best SUV out there in my opinion. Period. For the money, it feels so high quality. It has better interior quality than cars double its price from Mercedes like the GLB and new GLC. It's crazy! I absolutely love the Tiggo 8. What a car. If people aren't looking at it, they really are doing themselves a disservice. I think if someone needs an SUV, the Chery Tiggo 8 is the only one to get.

Having the spare wheel under the car is actually better. If you're traveling with a boot packed to the brim, you don't need to take out all your belongings next to the road to get to the spare wheel... And I have to agree, it's only R70k more, but it's like having a car that;s R200k more.

Agreed. As ciro said. Back then it was about the badge and all we saw was German perceived as the pinnacle of luxury and here our roads are flooded with Chinese now in this segment. Haval needs to just work on their after sales service as many complaints has come from a few branches of late here in CPT. I simply love the chery in that dark purple color and YES it's just a tad bit more refined than the Haval.

Love the comparative test. This was great. Just the power figures of the Haval H6 where missing at the beginning, if I remember correctly? Ciro did mention them in the end though.
You know what would’ve been fun to watch? A drag race between the 2 with maybe a 3rd benchmark car, maybe a polo gti or any other small hot hatch.
Thats true, young guys are with no familes starting to shop these, would be nice to have a yard stick to compare to.
I wouldn't say a Polo GTi. It would just walk away from these things. A normal polo TSI would be a better base to benchmark. But still probably quicker, tiggo 8 has a 0-100 of 9.5 not really exciting or quick by any means.
@legrangedylandlg , tiggo 8 2.0 turbo is 7.3s to the 100 and 1.6 turbo is 8.9 from standstill , I wonder where 9.5 come from?
@@legrangedylandlgyou’ll be very surprised how fast the Pro Max is. It struggles to put its power down off the line, but after 60km/h I promise you it is very quick. I wouldn’t be surprised if it beat a polo GTI from 100-160. I have driven many Pro Max’s so this is from personal experience.

I was seriously impressed when I first laid eyes on the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro in 2021. I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy one though. I can't even afford eggs these days, but I would absolutely love to drive one some day. Especially the 2.0 Pro Max with it's 180 kW. It's ridiculous in the best way possible!
Haval also seems great and I have generally only heard positive things about them, apart from the fuel consumption of course. Chery remains the winner for me.
I feel like now i know what to buy i always had a big debate on what to get, this kind of reviews are so helpful thanks guys for your honest opinions

last weekend i actually saw this cherry pro max in metal, its quite a looker, very nice
Great comparo video first off. I would prefer the H6 over the Chery , as they said if you dont need 7 seats(which as Chiro correctly stated are crap, if you need a car that has good 3rd row seating, get a Ertiga)otherwise the Chery is the better bet.
The one thing that set these cars apart for me was the seat width for comfort. I found the Chery seats narrower and the "bucket" shape hurt the sides of my legs.
A good comparison video eould be between the haval H6, Chery tiggo 8 pro max, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson at the same or very similar price point. Then you can show what South Africans actually get for their money
Having used a Chery Arrizo 7 for the past 8 years in the deserts conditions of the UAE. I can't wait to get a Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max when it's released!
Still love my H6 Ultra GT. Visually it appeals more to me than the Tiggo. Although it is a fine looking car.
The remote start works so well during hot days.
Its impossible to hop into a Cherry Tiggo 8 and not love it. I remember the 1st time I got into it I felt like im in a Range Rover

The Chinese have arrived and mea business. The Cherry and Haval brands represent great value for money and are highly specced as standard. The Cherry is the one I would go for as it looks more upmarket with a higher standard specification. The Cherry also has a more powerful motor. The Cherry brand has the upper hand over the Haval.
Is it advisable to cherry in south africa, i here machanics always complain about getting parts with these imported cars?

This was a truly an eye opener...but the 2024 Tiggo 8 pro Max does come with Heated Seats, I think Ciro missed that. Nevertheless an awesome review guy, thanks!!!

The biggest problem here is that the are two fantastic presenters , marketed both vehicles so well I had to watch three times before I came to a conclusion.
There is a lot of comments about the after sales (or lack of it) with regards to these two brands. Has anyone had personal experience of it improving / deteriorating ? Given the number of these that are being sold per month, it stands to reason that they would want to address this

Gents absolutely love your reviews, however I think that this was not a fair comparison. H6 should be compared to pro 7 both in the same segment. Pro 8 vs Tiguan allspace (other 7 seaters in the price & size bracket)
I would have loved to see the Tiggo 8 Pro Max vs the H6 HEV. Nearly a rand for rand comparison at R669 000. My assumed outcome would havr been luxury vs fuel efficency.

The Chery is a great car and feels worth the money. Driving a Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Executive myself and people are impressed in it. I will definitely go for T8 myself if my budget allows. Haval looks abit more basic.

@@m2ngwa89 80 percent of the time I don’t need a 4WD car but I do visit relatives in rural areas a lot and I once got stuck in the mud while driving with my wife and kids in the middle of nowhere, Ofafa near Ixopo KZN. It was a nightmare. That’s when I decided that a car must be a 4WD. It doesn’t have to be an extreme 4x4
