I think it's interesting how powerfactions where more along the lines of rome, pike heavy factions ect. but now it's moved a lot more towards the barbarian sword spam with tylis, the arverni and boii, kind of like the actual progression of history
How to play Boii: Step 1. Oathsworns, celtic warriors, sword followers, levy godmen. Step 2. Control A, right click enemy Step 3. ????????? Step 4. Victory Screen
There needs to be a bonus (something like +5 or +10 against inf or universal) for formation attack units. Should also probably consider dropping the charge bonus by 5-10 for barbarian units. The bonus are just too high presently. If the tactics of combat come down to simply delivering a charge its not really great for the game. I also agree that sword cav should probably get a bonus against infantry to make them more useful. Shield wall also needs sorted immediately.
Hey, i've been following your videos for quite some time on and off. Thing is, i finally got a good enough computer to be able to play Rome 2 and because off this im very late into the mulitplayer arena for rtw2. Id like to thank you for some excellent beginners and faction focus videos, yesterday i played my first three games and i won them all. So yet again, thank you for your efforts on helping new players into this game. If there would be any upcoming tournaments that you know of for players that are new/newish to this game or the upcoming Attilla id love if you would hint about it in some video. /Love from Sweden
Christian Johannesson that depends on what you are into. Caesar in Gual adds the Boii and Nervii to multiplayer as well as a campaign. Hannibal at the gates is a fun campaign in my eyes and adds more factions. Tylis is good in multiplayer and comes with the Balkan pack.
Christian Johannesson I think it really up to your preference to time period. I always enjoyed the punic wars, so i had a lot of fun with the Hannibal at the Gates campaigns. Whereas Ceasar in Gual never enticed me. Or just monitor deals light humblebundle and grab them when they are on sale :)
I think one thing that this video reminded me of in terms of changes from Rome 1 to Rome 2 is the lack of quality vs. quantity fights. I remember seeing a lot of videos and playing a lot of games in Rome 1 where I would take a smaller number of upgraded units against a large unupgraded force. Those battles were interesting and highlighted the importance of maneuvering. In Rome 2 it always seems to be that numbers win
Wish thracian warriors have frenzy. Wish cheap spears like eastern spearmen, vigiles and other non hoplite cheap spearmen for other factions have javelins. And Shield wall is removed from every unit or seriously nerfed. Formation attack aquires some bonuses as there is no incentive to use formation attack. And sword using cav gets bonus vs infantry.
yes but that would require basic thought into how units interact on a higher dimension then ROme 2 currently allows. CA might have some seriously talented game developers but they are wasting time and energy in places it doesn't matter. Kill moves? Seriously, soldiers did not kill each other with kill moves, soldiers killed each other with quick stabs to the face, neck, thighs, arms and arm pits with a rare opportunity in the central mass.
tbone martinez ^^^^ Holy shit this. Who the fuck cares about some fictional, action-movie "executions" when it ends up making the actual gameplay worse?? The only time I see kill moves is when I take the time to watch a replay and zoom in on the combat. Not when I'm actually playing the game. It honestly looks worse with the kill moves. There isn't enough variety. I end up watching five dudes kill someone in the exact same complicated and inefficient way; all at the exact same time. It's fucking stupid.
A good build against boii could be : tarentine cav, or numidian cav, particularly against the heavy cav of the boii, and then, to block infantry a spam of thureos spears with javelins and square formation perhaps....
As one of the folks who's been out of the loop since last spring, I'll be very interested to see how the Suebi stack up when their faction focus rolls around. (Yes, I know it will be quite some time, since the FF videos run more or less in alphabetical order). That said, I imagine the answer to "how do the Suebi compare to the Boii?" will simply be "badly."
Thorax swords actually used to have a decent charge, along with hoplites, they should give some of it back back so they arent, well useless, though hoplites can actually hold. Maybe formation attack should confer a melee defense bonus as roman hellenic and punic units typically have a lower charge in addition to lower melee defense when compared to celtic or germanic troops.
never knew maximus's conclusion of expert charge defense on cav being useless was contested, it seemed completely decisive that it does absolutely nothing in his video
What is a good Macedonian army to take then? Is there even one? Macedonia is one of my favorite Rome II favorites but it feels like they are so outclassed by every other faction in Rome II.
a pike box haha. there is literally nothing macedon could have done against boii. heir brought a terrible boii army as well. Barbarian sword spams are ridiculous
Boii and Tylis the current most used factions in tournaments. With some nice tournament rules such as 8 max of the same type etc you can however make things a bit more interesting. Thank you for the focus. P.S. I wanted to talk to you about something involving the Blue tournament currently going on and sent you an email but you probably didnt get to read it. Too much mail I guess. :)
Heir, would you be able to do a Rome faction focus next, because I have been playing with them for a while but I never can get a good hold on what to expect from my opponent and what to take into battle with me. So just a small request
with that Illyrian faction I tore through Hastati like a knife through butter with axesmen. Not the levies, the next step up. Same thing with Epirus' phalanx. Damn that was a slaughter fest. The axes get overlooked a lot in this game.
Wow, you have actually seen anyone use flaming arrows in multiplayer, because I havent! It is near to impossible to fire flaming arrows without it hurting your own men and they will not get any kills. But wait a second, if it decreases melee attack so may it be very useful in hoplite armies. I will go and check on that rigth now!
StoneWolf In the older patch where morale can be broken with a succession of morale decreasing factors like fear, attacked in flank/rear, flaming arrows, etc..., people used to use fear units combined with flaming arrows and other factors in succession to break even roman infantry with few casualties. The newer patches made units stayed longer and is harder to break render these tactics very tough to succeed, thus people gave them up. Another point to notice is flaming arrows are not effective at killing, so people rarely use them now unless they want to run elephants amok or break a wavering unit. Otherwise standard arrows are better off in terms of killing power.
ofi123 I know, I have watched heir of carthages videos for a while know, what I rather meant is that I have not fought anyone that uses flaming aroows personally.
Why do hellenic, eastern, Latin sword infantry have so low melee defense? The barbarian swords have as high armor and as much if not better missile block chance.
I will still follow you thorough attila. But win u still play rome 2 because I don't have a a lot of space on steam Evan when I have 1 game so I can't play attila but I love rome 2 so are going to be still doing it?
what if formation attack was more like an automatic shield wall without the bracing? would that help balancing, i know what formation attack does but if it raised melee defense a bunch that would be a big help to thoraxes.
I agree, its part of the debate since the game was released that there seems to be a lot of features in the game that make it very arcade like. For instance shield wall is an un-necessary addition to the game. When units fight in formation they automatically formed a wall with their shields. Making it a button to push that magically creates better melee defense is just more tedious micro management. Other examples are frenzy charge, hoplite wall, and trample, seriously these are things that should be passive!
It'd be cool if there was more difference between them (apart from Suebi and Iceni). Like, the low-tier sword units are all the same, the mid-tier ones are the same, etc.
I know this may sound stupid, but I'm a relatively new player, and I was wondering how I can play as the Boii. They aren't in any steam culture pack I can find.
Not really. You're going to be out-maneuvered by the Boii sword infantry and once they get around your pikes you'll be screwed. Pikes are very difficult to use in multiplayer. Macedon has nothing in the way of solid infantry to secure the pike formations flanks and their cav will lose to Boii cav if supported by infantry (which should almost always be the case). I'm sure there is a way to beat Boii with Macedon but it wouldn't be easy.
no, a human player is never going to send his sword units head first into pikes which is why they are pretty much pointless in multiplayer. Sending heavy shock cav into sword formations might work in the first few charges but again no human player(unless they are brand new) is going to set his troops up in a line to be cycle charged by shock cav without bringing in spears to support. Levy freemen in particular have a javilins that can kill at least 10 -15 heavy melee cav in a single volley if they have already lost hit points.
Couldn't Macedon bring hopilites as his main force to hold the enemy swords and then go cav heavy? I haven't played in a while but I feel like this could work since I feel like Thessalians could beat heavy horse and then cycle charge
Rush4in Rome has to be THE power faction in the game. Roman swords are the best. Best armour:melee defence:melee attack ratios in the game. They trounce anything in a slugfest. Barbarians only win because they kill so many on the charge giving them a massive numerical advantage for the rest of the grind out. But since Rome as so many fodder units, and access to elephants, great skirmishers etc. they have to be the best. Barbarians are one dimensional - sword spam only. I've seen so many different builds with Rome that you never quite know what to expect. Some players take sheer sword spam, some take a balance with cav, others take the elite skirmishers, others try elephants. Using meatshields as Rome is the only conditional factor and to be honest it isn't difficult. Hastati and those cheap-ass spears, just spread them thin in front of your main line - others use cav to blunt charges too, there are too many options. This is why Rome beat the barbarians in the game for me, they have more options than the barbarians giving them more adaptability.
I find it strange but Iceni seems to be a good counter pick for other sword armies, as they can almost match them sword for sword, but also have chariots which destroy any enemy in sheild wall.
Not good for game play but also what bugs me just as much is the lack of historical accuracy. There is way too much mail and javelins among Celtic fractions with the exception of the Iceni.
Attila begins in 395 AD so past most of those factions time. Rome owned Egypt and Greece by that point and had for quite some time. It will be focused on the decay of the Roman Empire and the great migrations of the barbarian tribes.
I do still think that rome is the swordmasters out there it is so easy to speedbump barbarian charges and if the charges are gone the roman infantry just are more powerfull
Hardly anything can beat Roman Inf in a slug fest without a charge. It just all comes down to how each opponent handles each other's speedbumps. I sometimes like to bring a Praetorian Guard and leave it behind the main engagement just begging for an enemy to start to break through lol.
simontigerhajen you need meatshields and that means more lines and its easier to outflank the romans barbarian sword spam is simply stronger and the boii have better cav than the romans
hahaha titans indeed! A friend of mine told me that when you use boii all you gotta do is forget flanking, run straight forward. Boii are easy to use then!
All spear units should have the option of throwing their spear at an enemy and doing extra damage compared to say leves with just having javelins. Once thrown, they draw a short sword or long stabbing dagger and take a buff to their attack since they are fighting without a spear. Levy freemen in particular should have 2-3 javelins, and then at the end throw their spear or keep it. Axmen should be using their ax like they really did in combat, hacking at an enemy shield and should kill with concussion or deep gashes. Right now they stab with their axe instead of swinging it? Stupid
A spear isn't designed to be thrown unless it's a throwing spear like a javelin. If a spear unit throws their only weapon that would make them defenseless and useless, in addition the spear would do less damage and have less range than a throwing spear or javelin.
Boii what an army.
I see what you did there
Hehehe
Im a boii....my ancestors and dna prove it... oh man i wanna play
Oh boii I thought I left this comment 4 years ago, I guess it wasnt me
Rome 2 - $ 59.95.
Heir saying MLG Freemen - Priceless.
Are u not entairtained!!!??!?!?!??
After seeing boi freeman wipe a chariot unit with one simple javelines throw...yep that's mlg
The only thing that can beat MLG Freemen... is Cheatstati
Pastati - Praetorian guard dressed up as Hastati.
-.- Really maximus? Haven't we settled this debate.
Scout: General, here come those Boii
General: oh shit waddup
Legit Real Skeletor lmaoooo
Yea Boiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
I think it's interesting how powerfactions where more along the lines of rome, pike heavy factions ect. but now it's moved a lot more towards the barbarian sword spam with tylis, the arverni and boii, kind of like the actual progression of history

Step 1. Oathsworns, celtic warriors, sword followers, levy godmen.
Step 2. Control A, right click enemy
Step 3. ?????????

The Night Mother Step. 3 getting around the meat shields
The Night Mother way to accurate
"Getting rear charged by Naked Swordsmen..." "Throwing Javelins into their rear..." Heir please keep this PG 13.

I love your tutorials mate! Has anything changed in the last couple of years in RTW2 since the time you made these faction focus videos?
YEAH BOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!
Boii are da bois
"here comes the joke about being rear charged by naked warriors, Always comes"
I think that Naked Warriors should have the 'Immune to scare' passive ability. It would reflect their boldness and they could be useful against Suebi.
Boii
The power faction in disguise
hell yes man, thanks for this video, this is my fav faction for aggressive gameplay :D
When your charging it from behind but then the Roman commander says: "Cavalry Charge!"
I think one thing that this video reminded me of in terms of changes from Rome 1 to Rome 2 is the lack of quality vs. quantity fights. tbone martinez You're a bit late on this topic, guys.
Solitudo Infinita am I late?
@@trippfields279 not as late as me lol
MLG freemen xD
Also, naked warriors doing rear charges. Joke never gets old... :P
18:20 IT'S DAT BOII
You know what I appreciate about you Heir? You respond to comments, that's awesome! Great vid as usual btw!
I lost it at a "rear charge from naked warriors" buahahahah
Proud to be bohemian

When I bought this game and did the campaign I used to shout boooooooiiiiiiiii whenever I saw the boii in the next turn thing
But the tribe of the booooiiiiiaaaaaaaaaj will never be defeated
My last name boii..... last of the tribe ...
whats the difference between Weapon Damage, and Melee Attack
wd is damage inflicted when attacks hit, melee attack is the chance of hitting (the opposite of melee defence)
I notice flaming arrows usage is lower in the recent patches with the melee focus and harder to break morale.
Wow, you have actually seen anyone use flaming arrows in multiplayer, because I havent!

Caught me off guard that Boii and Tylis became so powerful. What would be a good faction to counter?
Just have a good relationship with other factions and ask your allies to attack them. You should be fine
I've come to hate barbarian factions besides Suebi and Iceni since EE which is sad because barbarians were really really cool irl. :(
It'd be cool if there was more difference between them (apart from Suebi and Iceni). Like, the low-tier sword units are all the same, the mid-tier ones are the same, etc.

Buy the ceaser in the Gaul dlc
"Close" Victory cx
can you please do some online battles i cant wait for it
with macedon could you not get a few pikemen a few rhodian slingers and a few shock cav and whittle away at a boii army?

possibly yes if you got your men into hoplite wall.
Fighting a faction with naked warriors with a hoplite heavy army is like dropping the soap in a prison shower
Can you skip some boring factions and do some of the cooler ones like the seleucids?
Yo Heir.. Who would you consider to be actual power factions now??.. because back in the day it was pretty much the successor kingdoms and rome:)..
Boii, Arverni, Tylis and maybe Rome but only if they manage to use their meat shield hastati well to block the barbarian charges. :/
Rush4in Rome has to be THE power faction in the game. Roman swords are the best. Best armour:melee defence:melee attack ratios in the game. They trounce anything in a slugfest. Luke of Lancs Definitely, but Rome isn't THE power faction currently, they are just A power faction. Plus all the barbarians have shieldwall.
I find it strange but Iceni seems to be a good counter pick for other sword armies, as they can almost match them sword for sword, but also have chariots which destroy any enemy in sheild wall.
***** But I'd not consider them a power faction in the least
Not good for game play but also what bugs me just as much is the lack of historical accuracy. There is way too much mail and javelins among Celtic fractions with the exception of the Iceni.
uhm, i was looking for yea boii
Boii or Suebi?
Lmao, boii
RetroWell lmfaoo bro
Set Plax at flak and swords at middle????? Wtf
I haven't been living under a "Total War rock", I just refused to give CA any more of my money after that launch and have never played as the Boii.
I really hope CA nerfs barbarian sword spam before they move on to Attila
I don't follow attila a whole lot so would sparta Athens rome or Egypt be in it? And who is attila?
You don't know who Attila is? You could use some history lessons... btw you could just google it
Attila begins in 395 AD so past most of those factions time. Rome owned Egypt and Greece by that point and had for quite some time. It will be focused on the decay of the Roman Empire and the great migrations of the barbarian tribes.
Attila the Hun and his horsemen of doom.
HeirofCarthage what are you going to do since Carthage was a historical footnote in atillas time?
Oh
please do tylis next!
It is going alphabetically.
thats why i ask tylis next lol
Are the Boii to powerful?
yeah Boiiiiiiii
Boii RULE.
here come dat boi
So many celts have javelins
heck of a one sided fight.
I do still think that rome is the swordmasters out there it is so easy to speedbump barbarian charges and if the charges are gone the roman infantry just are more powerfull

simontigerhajen you need meatshields and that means more lines and its easier to outflank the romans barbarian sword spam is simply stronger and the boii have better cav than the romans
TH-cam what the fuck is going on?
what pack can I get the boii in
ohh Boii!
men this faction hav som great warrior in battle they stand in the figtht lik crazy
hahaha titans indeed! A friend of mine told me that when you use boii all you gotta do is forget flanking, run straight forward. Boii are easy to use then!
What dlc are they in?
Ceasar in Gaul I think.
ty I looked it up couple days ago totally not worth $15 for one faction...
+daniel reed it's actually 2 and a new campaign
what is mlg freeman
He has already said that in the video...
Major League Gaming. The meta-game has played out to where, for their cost, they are one of the most versatile units.
tq for giving answer
How do I get the boii?
purchase Caesar in Gaul campaign and you also get galatia
All spear units should have the option of throwing their spear at an enemy and doing extra damage compared to say leves with just having javelins. bababoi
*BOII*
3 silver Celtic warriors cost the same as Legionaries (660) and can beat them.
boii
Second! Yeah!
Me and the Boii sacking rome
Broken faction
This battle just shows what is wrong with Rome 2. MLG Freemen? More like bad game design.
clearly you don't understand they are a good anti cav unit and have javelins that's it using them in campaign they are near useless
BOII
