I mean I’m hyped for gear 5th because I want it to be Luffy’s final, op, powerup. By the end of Wano Luffy should be top tier, and to avoid him getting too strong, I hope that the rest of the series will be about his crew trying to catch up. Blackbeard will be tough, but the tricky part with him will be getting around his darkness fruit, and that could just be solved in-arc without a powerup. Basically, I’m hyped for gear 5th cause it’ll show us kinda what pirate king Luffy will look like.

I honestly think it would be sick if in the epilogue luffy busted out a new form. like if there is no gear 5 it would be cool if like 20 years later we get to see gear 5.
@@Discarabsnation3187y luffy's hits against blackbeard should be actually stronger than against anyone else (IIRC blackbeard said his body gets hurt more when he is hit because darkness absorbs everything or something like that). as long as blackbeard doesnt grab luffy, luffy can almost ignore the devil fruit cancelling ability of the yami yami no mi. luffy can still use gear 4, still stretch his arms, still do pretty much everything as long as blackbeard doesnt touch him. only luffy's fist wouldnt be rubber when he hits BB so that doesnt really take away from any of his attacks

What I usually do is read characters bio on wiks to catch on them.
I think that an actual “Grandline Review” could be an interesting series. Talking about various locations on the grand line from the view of a civilian tourist while also talking about how they relate to their real-world inspirations would be quite fun! I’d imagine Dressrosa would rank quite highly on the list of places to visit, Whole Cake Island would be in the middle (it’s great until big mom gets hungry), and that island where lighting strikes constantly would probably be near the bottom of the list.
Gear Second to me always seemed like a clear example of Luffys combat genius and physical talent. He basically appropriated the techniques of CP9 by observing them in combat. He retaliated with his own version of it based on his body and devil fruit.
I love all the gears. I just don't like how he was about to use gear 3 on blueno but then we had to wait to see it

if haki werent ever to be introduced, most fights would probably have this "wet luffy wins against sandy-gator" vibe. haki is just a mechanism to highlight strength. i feel oda needed that to have a more sober and democratical explanation on character's strength since it would become hard to write and maybe boring if every powerful person had a fruit.
and characters such as nami and usopp were not in the first line of attack in the pre-haki era, so this system is not exactly unfair to them, they were already more of tactical/comical figures
I think that its not easy to master gives it more credit as system as well. And that haki can enhance logia as well helps a lot keeping them scary.

Also without Haki or atleast something comparable to it, we'd be stuck in a situation, where whole lot of of antagonistic characters have powers, that are basically impossible for protagonists to counter.
I feel like it’s just gone too far with the advanced ones.
There not really being a hard counter to Haki is also a problem. haki just becomes the new end all where Logias operated.
@@thats4thebirds yeah haki powercreep seems to be an issue but Oda solve it with DF awakenings an insane power up specially in the case of Zoans which seem to have the ability to regenerate, and the fact that DF users can enhance their abilities with haki. Haki powercreep was also necesarry for explaining why characters without DF like Mihawk, Garp and Shanks are as powerful as they are.
Haki also has a huge weakness been stamina, we have been shown DF users been able to spam their abilities with little issue but with haki you have to be more efficient and conservative.
Unpopular opinion : All of this is happening as a dream as luffy is still in jango's hypnosis from syrup village
Realistically, luffy only has awakening and mastered conquers left to add to his arsenal; so gear 5 doing both of those works well.
I also think any characters with too many forms fall into the dbz/bleach problem of "have a problem? Solve it with a new form!" New forms are hype, but too many are indicative of lazy writing.
Honestly Gear 5 being Luffy's awakening is the last thing I want in one piece besides romance

luffy has already mastered conqueror's. not much else to add to it now that he has the advanced version. the only way i see luffy getting awakening during the series is if Vegapunk (or maybe Caesar with the help of chopper or something) can do a forced awakening on luffy. i dont think this idea is too far out considering chopper's rumble balls basically temporarily force his awakening, and recently in the manga Caesar knew how to improve chopper's rumble balls. very possible that the WG has/had vegapunk trying to work out how to force awakenings of devil fruits and caesar was there researching it with him.

Gear 5th: Awakening Bouncy House
Basically allowing him self to turn his surroundings into rubber just like katakuri turned his surroundings to dough, But have the shape of luffy’s the shape of a bouncy house or a castle allowing him to jump around in the bouncy house propeling his attacks and speed and still be able to use other gears while doing so.

am i the only one who loves training arcs? the slow build up to the character's power up is then rewarded with the sick unveiling in a fight, they were some of the best parts of watching naruto and bleach. i love the way oda incorporated the training into the katakuri fight and i'd love to see more of that.

I think training arcs get too much hate. I loved how oda incorporated the Raleigh flashbacks into the fight with katakuri because we got the best parts of training arcs (how the character figures out the new skill) without the worst parts (it dragging on for too long).
It's like tournament arcs, it's cliche but so good and that's why there's so many of them
Depends on where and how it happens. In an arc like enies Lobby, not really necessary IMO, but something like Post Marineford worked well. I would say the Katakuri fight worked well in some ways too. For Udon Prison, I didn't like it as much as the other ones in the past.
I wouldn’t say that gear 2nd came out of nowhere because i’m pretty sure luffy said that he was working on a new move after losing to aokiji and then later after losing to lucci. And gear 2nd came as a result to both of those opponents since the heat would melt aokiji’s ice and the speed/power would help against the rokushiki techniques
I'm 100 percent convinced that gear 5th will be Luffy awakening his fruit and being able to become a giant. My guess is that Luffy's ultimate form will make him about as big as kaido and combined with conquerers will make him unstoppable. If he can also use gear 2 while in gear 5th he can also add super speed as well. Something other huge characters haven't been shown to use.

Y’all forget that gear 2nd was something Luffy thought of for a while. Ever since his crews encounter with Aokiji he needed an answer to melt the ice and increase his speed. That’s when gear 2nd was planned.
Plus it’s not something that actually needs training, why would he need to train for something as simple as increasing his circulation?

"Boa becomes a flat character, when she is around Luffy"? That makes no sense to me, her not be able to balance her emotions (since she properly never experienced love), is part of her character. I also assume, that as long as she doesn't overcome it (at least balancing it out a little bit) Luffy will not be interested in her romantically. Luffy clearly rejects her acting so weird, so even he isn't on board it. So her being "flat" is part of the design.
She basically becomes sanji in female form who in turn is basically every other anime character who sees someone they deem beautiful. That's kinda flat tbh
It’s just too silly for most, but at the same time, MetalB has a good point here - the reason for her behavior is given. She’s not flat in the literal sense on the contrary, I found it to be very good expectation subversion
I actually like the reasoning given as to how and why she fell for Luffy, but at the same time I'm very much in the camp that thinks the whole lovesick schoolgirl act basically ended up amounting to nothing, but regularly watering Hancock down to bunch of samey dreary jokes, that would continuously undermine her character and were already ran into the ground by Impel Down, so her character would ultimately be far more compelling without that aspect.
Also still don't understand anyone who would seriously ship her with Luffy based on it...

Don’t know if this counts as an unpopular opinion but, I think story developments post time skip has made white beard (at least during marineford) feel kinda weak. Kiado and Big Mom are proving to be so hard to even damage, but White Beard got damaged by scrubs like Squad.

I mean whitebeard was just that sick at the time. He could barely even use his haki. We saw him move around like a beast in the oden flashback . But at marineford, he hardly moved which just shows how sick he was at marineford

Yeah most likely because they're stronger than Marineford Whitebeard. He was 72, dying, could barely use haki and couldn't even move fast anymore. Even with that he still could easily defeat an admiral like Akainu, yes he's gonna look weak when you compare a half dead man to a person like Kaido who's in their prime.
whitebeard could have defeated anyone in marineford alone except maybe mihawk and traded blows with shanks, comparing that to irl old people, who sometimes can get internal bleeding from a little bump with a wall, whitebeard's power level was still a little above what u would expect in his old age.

3:26 Funny, I feel the precise opposite way. To me it's Gear 3rd that makes no effing sense. Inflating his bones should make Luffy bigger *and lighter*. So it would have no practical application at all, except maybe allowing him to float. The only way around this issue is if the air somehow becomes rubber when it enters his bones, but a) that sounds more like awakening than an ability Luffy would have in Paradise, and b) that would mean the air would get trapped in his bones, unless he can also turn his inner rubber back into air.
Meanwhile Gear 2 just boosts Luffy's metabolism so he'll be able to use Soru. While the pink skin and steam make little sense, at its core it works similar to an massive shot of adrenaline, which his body can only endure because his blood vessels are also made out of rubber. It should affect Luffy in other ways like making him speak faster and have a hard time standing still, but still, it makes more sense than Gear 3rd.
I agree. For the pink and steam tho I think it because of his high blood pressure from pumping his blood vessels, turning his body pink while the steam is his sweat evaporating from the body heat
Also, gear 3 could be used for area damage but will have much lesser power than a normal punch. Him punching a gaint hole on the building with a normal gear 3 punch make little sense to me but on the other hand when coated with haki in might make it heavier? thus make in much more deadlier?. Only if it heavier tho.

I think gear 3 works like balloons where you can simply fill the limb with air and then it's inflated (just that's since its rubber its logically harder to expand). And the bones are probably in the state of non existing(deflated) during gear 3 to make it easier for luffy to expand his limbs? Idk it's just my opinion though
I went more in deph on the thread where we commented unpopular opinions, I agree that the aspect of mass distribution is a logical flaw of gear third, but if we're to apply physics into the matter, pumping blood faster would not necessarily mean accelerating your metabolism if respiration isn't accelarated at the same rate, as you would be consuming oxygen faster than you breathe it and introduce it to your blood.
But that's not my issue, my main problem with the introduction is that Luffy didn't have a frame of reference for his circulation affecting his speed and getting his method right the first time. While gear third depite being inflating the bones, Luffy has already practiced an inflation ability with his stomach. I like how One Piece doesn't waste time with training arcs, but I just feel like if it was just gear third (which would've been called gear second if that were the case) it would've been better.

IDK if this is unpopular but, I think that the anime's sound design (not music and voice acting but general sound effects) is pretty dated. Like the animation is 10/10 now a days but we still get bad footsteps and punch sounds from the early 2000s

This is a very interesting opinion I've never thought of, since I'm always in awe of the music. It's honestly kind of weird that the sound effects haven't sound like they've changed at all. You'd think Toei would update all of it recently at the least
Its intentionally for the one piece aesthetic...which I personally classify as Japanese oceanic steampunk.
I was just thinking about this a while ago. The water Luffy water pistol sound effects were the same sound as kaido's blast breath which is just plain stupid. The high jumping sound is so old too. The best new sound tho was probably when Luffy and Katakuri were flying around in the mirror world so fast nobody could see them.
I completly despise the sword clash sfx and Luffy's gatling gun sound (the one against lucci was great) it makes them sound so weak and lame
The way Oda showed Luffy’s training is like how Yu Yu Hakusho showed Yusuke’s training. They skip it completely and show you the character after the training, and gradually show you over time what it is they went through.
That's lazy writing and a bad comparison by GLR in the video.

I think reviewing the actual different parts of the world of One Piece in great depth would be a really fun series actually.

I agree and disagree on the aspect of "whoever has the most haki" wins. We spend a lot of time looking at devil fruits and haki as separate power systems with individualized flaws when they are meant to be two systems that compliment each other.
Two Haki users of equal skill levels could fight each other win, lose or draw
Two devil fruit users without Haki depending on the fruits and skill levels could win, lose or draw.
A Devil fruit user could defeat a Haki user and vice versa
A person who has both a devil fruit and skill in Haki could defeat a devil fruit user without Haki (depending on the fruit)
A person with Haki could defeat someone who has both a devil fruit and Haki but their skill and power would need to compensate to counter act the fruit.
The two systems work fine and balances out perfectly in the lower mid and upper tiers as long as you look at them as a collective unit but since we have started to reach the level of god tiers dealing with the 100 (rough number) strongest people in the world it doesn't feel balanced.
If Luffy challenged someone who had the same skill level with Haki as he did right now that didn't have a devil fruit, he would likely stomp them into the ground
Likewise if someone like Tashigi post time skip fought Ace Pre Timeskip (when he was clearly not using Haki), Ace would probably be annoyed that Tashigi could hurt him but he would still be able to kick her ass.

Honestly, I don't think we've seen a fight resolved by straight Haki level yet, aside from perhaps Luffy vs Kaido round one, but the scales are still a factor.. (fodder armies excepting, I don't count those)
This would be true if kaido wasn't invincible because no one in the wg had conquerer's haki. And even if someone did, no one knew how to use it like a weapon.

I personally like gear 2nd more than third because it makes sense. Idk why pumping air makes the first heavier and not like a balloon, may be because air converts into rubber too inside Luffy's body but even the name bone balloon doesn't help much in terms of logic and stuff
All the gears are kind of a stretch to explain, but I definitely like how gear 2 and 3 impacted the story

@@pepperonicheesecake1656 gear second is based on Luffy using his legs/arms as a pump to make his blood flow faster, and since his body is made of rubber his heart and blood vessels can Handel that pressure, kind of like an adrenaline rush. And plus I also love all his gears and all the powers, it's just that pumping air in a rubber container will result in a less dense balloon.

With gear second I feel he made it up on a whim like most of his attacks. I enjoy it mainly cause in a way it makes sense. Luffy figured that he would most likely pressure up the speed off his blood allowing him to basically run at 2 times himself. He adapted during a battle like he normally does by paying attention to what the enemy is doing.

I hope gear 5th isn't about strengths but its an application of all 3 forms of haki (conquerors, observation, and armament) because that would be a really cool concept since we haven't seen much of conquerors haki yet except for making weak side charachters to fall.

The perospero one is SO TRUE, the guy even tried to let Brook and Chopper flee from Totto Land, of course they would never do it, but how many villains spare they enemies or give them chances like these? He was just an Antagonist doing his job, nothing more, nothing less.
the thing about one piece for me is, most of the side characters or sometimes even the main characters of certain arcs aren't really engaging and the reason varies from character design to purpose to time spent on building the character to panel time given to it.
I do feel like the number of plot-relevant characters has increased exponentially every since Dessrossa. I mean before the grand fleet was formed, I remember wondering why the hell Oda had spent so much time on minor characters. He even split the crew so we'd have more time to focus on other people in that arc.
I was hoping we'd get back to normal after that, and Zou toned it down a bit, but then we had to meet the entire Big Mom crew, followed right after by all of Wano and the entire Beast Pirates. And the growing number of characters does make what should have been straightforward plots much harder to follow.

tbh I disagree but that is your viewpoint. I still think that the characters are built well enough for them to be engaging even those with a lesser screen time still have that emotional impact. But wouldn't character design and the focus on the character make them more engaging, gives us as viewers to take an interest into them

I always felt that Gear 2/Diable Jamble/Dragon Blaze were all created in an effort to overcome Aokiji. Like Gear 2 to get in/out fast enough to not get frozen, and the others as a fire counter to ice

We haven't seen much of gear fourth yet and he still has backlashes from the current gear . So I don't think we'll get fifth soon we might get it at the last year or something or like the last arc. Or second last arc

1 gear/ no gear base form
2 gear increase blood transfer, elasticity to heart & blood vessel
3 gear increase of bone size
4 gear increase of muscle size

Maybe he can now use all the different gears at once, but with that its just Monkey D. Oars all over again haha
Either some form of awakening (rubber can transform into literally anything) or using Conq Haki for toughness, allowing for smaller size and more speed/flexibility.
I'd say it would be a combination of all of them but with no restrictions or drawbacks. Like he can use aspects of gear 4th but there's no risk of haki exhaustion or no life span hit like with gear 2nd and no need to blow air into his bones (gear 3rd makes no sense at all) kinda like after the time skip instead of him having to get into a stance for gear 2nd he just moved and it activated. That sort of thing. If I had to guess if there is a gear 5th it would tie into his awakening in some way
I wouldn't mind a few more gears. They might be based on the gears of a car, in which case there would still be one to three gears to cover (depending on whether you drive a car with 5 or 6 gears and whether gear reverse would be a thing).

Can't really keep adding numbers to his gears like SSJ because that's not how gears work; If his gears are based off of the concept from Vehicles then 5th will be his last, now whether or not that's called Gear 5 or "Overdrive" is up for debate as the terms can be interchangeable

@@burcopresents Its interesting because the Sand, Swamp, and Darkness logia fruits are the only ones that are shown to have special secondary powers.
Sand can desiccate(dry up) things and turn them to sand, Swamp has a sort-of dimensional storage thing happening, and darkness can negate fruit powers.
None of the other logia fruits that I remember have special unique powers that aren't just their users being creative with their elemental control.

One Piece Concern: So I really hope this whole thing with luffys devil fruit is a fake out. I don’t want it to be special. I don’t want luffy to win because of what he is. It’s all about who he is.
A thing i like about one piece is that luffy isnt special. His fruit isnt op and being a D and conquers haki were more symbolic then power ups. (Conquers haki has changed but enough people have it that I can deal with it)
Just remember that Luffy got to where he was because of his underdog creativity, and not many other people were able to do the same with blatantly more powerful fruits. It doesnt mean anything to me now because luffy is already powerful and hasn't discovered the possible secret power. Its secret power also wouldnt be accessible to anyone immediately either so yeah.
I think his fruit is special in a specif scenario and not because of the power the fruit give you. My idea is, that it can cancel Whitebear's Devilfruit from destroying the world (awaking makes anything around the user to rubber, which negates the earthquakes). This is a setup for the fight against Blackbeard later in the story, since it is opposite to each other. Blackbeard planed in getting the fruit through killing a Yonko, while Luffy got his fruit by accident from hanging around with a (later) Yonko.

Hi I'm new as of pretty recent but there actually was a moment that hinted towards gear 2nd. When luffy was climbing the mountain in drum island luffys skin turned pink and started to exude mist showing that he may have been trying to speed up his blood to prevent freezing out. Not confirmed but something I noticed.
Better get on that review of the Grand Line, Liam. Fans are catching on.

Gear 2 was hinted at when Luffy said, I believe twice, that there is a new move he’s been working on previous to the fight with Blueno
It"s actually more like the advice Endeavor gave, take your strongest abilities (i.e. Gear 2nd & Red Hawk) get used to them and infuse them into your arsenal. Make those types of low-tier moves into things that can destroy entire fortresses.

About the lack of Character development: that's part of what I love about one piece: the development of characters feels natural. It takes a lot of time for a person to change. And the Strawhats each have their Moments. Sanji and Wholecake Island, Robin and Enies Lobby, Nami and Arlong Park (and also Alabasta). It is nice to focus on one person at a time.
If you want an origin of Gear 2, it's shown in one of the early One Piece movies. I know it's not canon, but it was an interesting concept. But also, Luffy said in story that he got the idea from his first fight with CP9 after observing the mechanics behind Soru.
Bit of a leap, I know, but it further exemplifies how Luffy never loses without taking something from the fight. Learning Crocodile's weakness, finding and exploiting a drawback of Moria's ability, and learning advanced Observation and Armament Haki from Katakuri and Kaido.
