    MAF Sensor: amzn.to/2ln69L9
    NGK Spark Plugs: amzn.to/2lgK40z
    This videos show you how to replace the PCV Valve on a Toyota Prius (2004-2009)
    There is another method where you remove the weather seal instead, but I find this method better as it provides access the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) for cleaning and the spark plugs also!
    You only need some basic wrenches, no fancy tools used!

      Update I flipped that wire harness over and got a long 19 mm socket on it broke free with one turn. With a breaker bar. thank you so much I looked at a lot of videos but they were all saying way more complicated stuff..

    Thank you for the nice video! I followed your procedure to replace the original PCV valve on my 2008 Prius without much difficulties. I am the original owner of this 2008 Prius with 185K miles, but I have never changed the PCV valve on this car before. I ended up using a 19mm socket to loose the PCV valve (very tight). To my surprise, the original PCV valve is still in good condition which rattles freely as the new OEM PCV valve. I replaced it anyway. I also cleaned the MAF (only slight dirty). My 2008 Prius does not consume any engine oil between oil changes (once a year/every 12,000 miles or so with 5W30 Mobile 1 extended performance full synthetic oil). I still can get about 53 MPG on this car with mixed local and highway driving!

    Just changed mine with the help of this video. Toughest part was getting the plastic clip off the wiring harness. I ended up taking the bolt off the bracket that holds the clip instead. I was able to use the closed end of 19 mm wrench to remove the valve. Had to go buy one from Home Depot for only $5. Be sure to have a regular wrench. A ratcheting wrench would not fit on the valve, too little clearance from the block. Thank you very much for making this video!

    Spray some PB Blaster around that PVC, and let it soak in. Should make it easier. Also a 19 mm crows foot with a 1/4 ratchet will work.

    Just replaced PCV Valve today on my 2009 Prius. When it came to breaking loose the valve, I used a 19 MM wrench, open end on valve, then a short length of pipe on other end of wrench, broke free on first attempt. Using 2 wrenches would have worked as well.. Great video.

    Didn't need to disconnect battery. I recommend using a wire tied to the hood to hold the relay box out of the way. At first it seemed impossible to move the whole (stiff) wire loom out to the left, in order to get to the PCV valve: I had to get more aggressive, and it was difficult to clear, but it can be moved! I used a 19mm socket on the valve, as it is really tight (the open end wrench slips off). As for the MAF, I removed it and cleaned it up nicely with just a toothbrush (no need for special spray). Now my Prius purrs like a kitten. Thanks! Saved $200.

    Excellent, direct to the point. I like the recommendation to take the opportunity to clean the MAF sensor (was going to suggest it myself if you didn't). Maybe only check the plugs if not time to replace. Certainly when it IS time to change the plugs, also clean or replace PCV valve and clean the MAF sensor.I always use compressor to blow away debris before pulling plugs.
    Tip: Any project where I have more than 3 kinds of bolts I use a parts storage case (Harbor Freight) to store each type in a compartment with a note describing where it goes. Was useful when I did remove the wiper assembly and cowl to get to the strut mounts. Those magnetic trays are also helpful.

    Another thing to do while doing this is also clean the throttle body. While that's off you can look inside the hole and you'll see how much oil has been seeping past the PVC valve mine was kind off bad. I thought about these job since car was wasting to much oil. Another way is putting finger inside tail pipe escape bon rear, if you're fingers come out very dark it's burning oil. Just hope it's this and not the piston rings

    Nobody has done upper radiator hose replacement on 2004-2009 Prius ... From what I see in your video it looks like this is the way to get access to the hose on the engine side... too many things around the hose.

    • @TutorialGenius

      Yes, but not from the PCV itself. The code will be a result of the bad PCV. Usually P0171 and P0174... Perhaps others too.

    • @luvpants2012
      @luvpants2012 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, having to remove the ignition coil wires to reach the pvc seems like an extra pain. 90% of Prius owners probably don't change it. And most Prius's consume oil like mine. I may bite the bullet and change it. I want to clean the throttle body anyway so the air filter housing will be moved already.

    How do you know when to change the pvc valve

    • @TutorialGenius
      @TutorialGenius  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      usually when its stuck closed, the crankcase cannot vent. this causes engine pressure. With that: black smoke and/or misfire at idle and/or increased oil consumption
      when its stuck open... you'll have surging
      They are cheap and easy to replace, so if you're at least 75% sure, i'd start there. sometimes the diagnostics would cost more in time and patience

    • @Q.Lawrence
      @Q.Lawrence 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Another thing to consider is if you have an issue with the catalytic converter getting fouled from oil. You can check the throttle plate to see if there's any oil build up there.

      Once it gets fully clogged like my 05’ with 260K. Every once in awhile during long periods of idle it’ll burn some blue smoke out the exhaust. I thought it was rings but ended up being the PCV. Also thought the 0W20 was the reason for the oil burning about .5 (half a quart) every 2K hard driving. WOT. Come to find out it was the PCV valve
