    You have no idea how much I'm loving your videos!! Over the last 17 years I've gone from quilter & President of a local Quilt Guild to single mom working full time struggling to make ends meet. Now retired and so so eager to get my hands back into fabrics & yarn crafting!! Your videos are wonderful!!

    Nice tips for the jelly roll quilt. Seeing it demonstrated and not worrying about twisted strips and color placement gives people permission to relax and enjoy the process.
    Loved your dog wandering in and out then waiting patiently for you in doorway. When our cats did that, we called them "speed bumps". I don't think you need anything to slow you down. Great channel.

    Regular jelly roll makes a perfect throw size quilt. I made a queen size, no borders and started with 116 strips.
    54 rows x 90" wide =4860 inches /42" strips = about 116 strips to start with.

    To eliminate "finding the end" , just use soft stick painters tape to attach it to the Sewing table somewhere, it will be in place when you finish sewing all the strips together.

    Hello from southern Florida. I worked on quilts when I lived in Chicago. They don't need heavy quilts in southern Florida, so, I make quilts for my winter family and friends in the cold northern states. I enjoyed watching your channel tonight and will be back for more.

    When I was young, I used to live near the garment district. My sisters and I used to go out to the alleys and hunt around for scraps of fabric so that I could make clothes for their dolls. One summer, I made a quilt out of long strips. I wish I could go back there again to get fabric in order to do more quilts like the one you have created. I enjoyed this video immensely. Thank you!

    I like the way you sewed all of those patches together and they look great too. I am working on a quilt from pieces of material my grandmother was working on many years ago and didn't get to finish before she got ill and passed away. I am going to make a quilt out of those pieces and if I have enough I will make two quilts and then work on one from my ideas and see how it turns out. I won't be working on this full time since I have other things to work on like my lawnmowers and utility tractors so they will be ready for Winter and next Spring.

    Instead of sewing two at a time I have seen people take the end of a previously sewn strip and sew the next onto that much like making binding, and so on and until they have one huge long strip, and then cut it in half, so it together and repeat. Interesting to see it done another way.

    I’ve always enjoyed your videos & learn new things,so thank you! I recently went through my scraps and ended up with enough 2” wide strips to make almost a king sized top. It needs a border - I’m planning on 4” all the way around. After measuring the length - that is, from the top of a strip to the bottom - I have a variation of almost 2”. I’m stymied as to how to trim top &/or bottom to square it up before adding the borders. Any advice would be really appreciated! And, thanks again for sharing your skills. I have to admit that watching you put this together I’m ready to make a second one! Although, more likely, I’d like to make pillow shams/cases to go with my quilt 😉

  • @kathyclayton4318
    @kathyclayton4318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    YES! I did notice you dropped a bunch of strips but I figured you discovered them at some point before you finished! LOL. You could just add them to the bottom, cutting them off to the right size to match your width. Usually though with Jelly Roll Race Quilts, getting enough length is not the problem, but getting it wider is. Can’t add your lost strips to the side though. Well I guess you could.....would change the look but that’s ok too. It’s your quilt. Do whatever you like. You could add a that wayward strip to the side edge making it long enough to match. I have made at least 3 of these connecting the strips a little differently. So fun and what you get each time is so different than what you might expect. Lots of random color and some places where the same colors come together. Thanks for doing this even with your injured leg. You are a trooper!

    • @TheFabricPatch
      @TheFabricPatch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are so right about all of that. You and I think alike!! I think I’m going to insert an 8” panel and put a short 10” strip set on the side.

    WHen I have made this pattern I join the strips the same way you put together your strips for binding, giving you a join on the diagonal. It adds a bit of interest and also you can join them in a chain fashion and snip off the selvedge after. I have also seen it done where a small contrasting colour or a tiny 4 patch in between each strip.

    I have made 3 of those quilt tops so far. I found it was handy to take a binder or bulldog clamp and clip the clamp with the beginning strips to something that will keep thos close by until you have to add another set and they reclamp your nesest end so you don't have to go find them.

    I did notice, but the quilt top still looks great, so who cares 🤩 Thanks for the tutorial!

    You make finding the other end of the long strip look so easy. ;) Ha ha! I had to laugh as you searched for it. Loved this video. After a very difficult few days it was fun to have this to watch. I had to come back & edit. I loved seeing Lizzy laying in the doorway at the end. Really missing my golden girl, Lola, though she always tried to lay under my sewing table to get as close to me as possible. Ha ha!

    • @TheFabricPatch
      @TheFabricPatch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! She gets bored with my sewing. Are you going to get another golden? Sounds like you still have so much love to share. I remember you telling me about Lola.

      Cindi, I would love to get another golden. It’s not a good time right now, but maybe in a couple of years. I’ll just enjoy my little glimpses of Lizzy for now. If I lived your way I’d come out and take her on walks while you healed. I’m glad you’re doing better. ❤️

    I made this project last year and to save time after i sewed my first 2 strips together while still under the presser foot i took the opposite end of the strip on top and pulled it back to the presser foot right side up and sewed the next strip on and continued that so when i cut them apart it was one big piece and didnt have to do the sets of 2 together, sets of 4 together etc it was all done. Hope that made sense.. 🤗

    I did not know that Batiks do not have a selvedge, been sewing with them for years and never knew or heard this although there have been times when I wondered why it was so hard to find where the selvedge ended... Lol... Thank you so much!

    Hi Cindy, I just love this video cos I've got heaps of strips left over, just like you did. And this idea has got me excited about using them up. Like you, I have no idea how many I have, but that's half the fun isn't it? And when if I discover at the end that I don't have enough to make a very large size, I know I have loads more fabric which I can cut into strips r even add a very large border. What happened to your leg? I haven't seen you for a while so I didn't know about it. In any event, I hope you're on the mend now. Be happy (from Oz with love). Suzie

    You've really inspired me to make some more Jelly Roll Race quilts for Christmas presents. Unfortunately I think I only have one jelly roll so I will be using fat quarters and maybe my fat eighth bundle. I plan on being in WA in October for mine and my twin's birthdays. . Hopefully I have the opportunity to visit.
    In the meantime, stay off the leg and heal quickly . Regards, Diana

    Just finished my first one! Took me longer than 33 minutes, though! It’s all pressed & now I’m wondering how to quilt it. Do you have any suggestions? Also want to let you know I didn’t “do anything crazy”! LOVE this video. Thank you!

      Oh thank you so much! You really can do anything for quilting. It actually looks great with simple lines on a domestic machine. Or of course it’s easier on a long arm.
