    I love your take on the Jelly Roll quilt. I never wanted to make one, because they were too scrappy for my taste. I love the single print and two solids! It truly is a clean modern look. Thank you Laura!

    Thank you for your tutorial. I bought a black and white jelly roll with a purple solid color but have never made a quilt and have been afraid to even get started. I like how organized you are using the small pieces of material at the beginning and ending and the clap so you can find the beginning. You have given me inspiration to make it now. Just need to get the tape to mark the sewing line now.

    That is just gorgeous. I have made several jellyrolls and this is the most exciting one.
    Some were just scraps and some were planned, but none look as good as yours. You
    really know how to teach and give such good reasons for what you do. Loved it.

    "My name is Lauara and I have a BE-YOU-ti-ful jelly roll of black and white" she said as she slightly wrinkled her nose, twinkled her eyes, and raised her eyebrows with impish glee, indicating her love of all things black and white with striking accent colors. Yes, who wouldn't have fun making a JR race quilt using your excellent instructions? Leaders & enders, clamp, sewing guiding strip for sewing the diagonal seams, trimming excess as you go, and how to deal with a twisted end - such useful practices and tips. I've seen quite a few YT videos for JR race quilts, and not been all that enthused about making one - yet -- until now. Because of that clamp tip, I really must add "Logical Laura" to the rest of my description of you.

      Laura, sorry about the typo in your name - 12:15 a.m. and I shouldn't be typing this late with my ripe-enough but too-dry-to-operate cataracts; punctal plugs coming up this week to help with the dryness first. No using rotary cutters for me this summer :-(

    I love this! Question: How many bobbins of thread did you need? Did you need more yardage for the border fabric? Thank you!

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Bernina has a extra large bobbin, so I only needed one and a bit. But for most machines I think I would get three ready. I was able to use 1 yd for all the green. If you want a bigger border you could pick up a little extra.

    Hi there, Laura! YT had this video as a suggestion for me to watch again, so I did and enjoyed it again:-) But what I want to say tonight (June 19, 2017) is CONGRATULATIONS! on hitting 100,000 subscribers in this last week. I saw you gathering about 1,000 a week awhile ago and could see this big one coming up soon.
    Did you and your circle of girlfriends get together to celebrate yet? Or maybe you and your family got together to celebrate in your backyard? It's quite an accomplishment for anyone with a TH-cam channel. But it's not at all surprising to those of us to watch you because of your personality, talents, experience, and the excellent original tutorials and tips. You deserve every last subscriber girl, you've so earned it with your professional yet warm words of instruction. So I'll join in with the rest of the circle of viewers and friends and give you this toast, "To my favorite sewing instructor who I wish I'd met at least 40 years ago: May you have many more years of loving your job, have thousands more subscribers and viewers, and may you receive as much joy in your life as the gifts you've given to us in learning from you."

    My daughter just said Holy Cow! She is 25 today! She wants one. What are the measurements on the finished quilt! Awesome and very modern. One of your best . Thank you.

    • @newbeequilter
      @newbeequilter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +UtahGmaw99 Well, tell your daughter I said, "Happy Birthday!" 25 was a VERY good year for me and I hope it will be for her too. Here's my input as a present. If anyone else wants to be part of this "gift" please feel free to join the conversation.
      I'm guessing it's about 68 inches long x around 54- ? inches wide. Many JR quilts that just use a variety of colors/prints that have 40 strips come out to be approximately 62 L x 54 W; yet Laura sews her seams on the diagonals and cuts off the excess, so that takes up a little more fabric for each join.. But since she adds the additional one yard of Green Zinger fabric, I guess the width will be a little different for each person making it as it depends on how many of the GZ strips you use, and how many times and the length you cut up each of those GZ strips. The more times you cut it (shorter green strips joined within the quilt) the more fabric is taken up in joining them to the B&W strips. The width will also depend on how much you cut off on the sides when you square up the quilt top. It's just not one of those quilts with exact final measurements due to the nature of the construction.
      But here are some clues. One yard of fabric will yield approx. (12-14) 2.5 inch strips depending upon how accurately you can cut your strips. Put aside 6-7 to make sure you have a generous amount for the border and you have the length of 6-7 GZ strips left for your quilt top's construction. She lets us know, "The strip sets get bigger and the length is going to get smaller." I guessed 68 inches for the length because at 9:18 she states she has 16 (strips/rows) and then, "and I'm sure you know what we're going to do next. Fold it in half again and sew along the one edge. When you come to the end, trim along the fold. You're done sewing all the rows together."
      It's just my estimation, but (32) 2-inch "finished" strips/rows come out to be 64 inches depending on how consistently you sew your ¼ inch seams. Add the border at the top and bottom of two more 2-inch finished GZ strips (4 inches) and you have 68 inches. Of course if you want the quilt top bigger (increased length or width) either use more than the 20 Black and 20 White (and GZ short strips) or make wider borders. Look at the finished quilt at 10:11 and using Laura's standing body, let your eyes do the estimation of how wide it will be and if it will suit your purpose for making it. As I recall from junior high home economics class, for a medium height woman, the approximate length from the tip of one's fingers (with your arm stretched out to one side) to one's nose (looking to the opposite side) is one yard or 36 inches. I believe this is just meant to be a good-sized couch throw and not necessarily a large bed-sized quilt. As she says in the description, "just the project needed for a fun afternoon". Thanks for listening and enjoy your youth.

    I love it! Does it matter if you sew the strips together all going the same way? Some people say if you sew strips all going the same way they'll bow.

      In this case it would be hard to change the direction, But I do know what you mean. The key is to let you feed dogs do all the work and try not to push or pull the fabric under the foot. Thanks for asking

    Wonderful! So modern in design. 2 questions: could you sew another parallel diagonal seam at the joining of the 2 colors of fabrics and make a 2 colored square, inserting it in the quilt?
    2nd question: why not just put needle down in the strips of fabric , why use those tags fore n aft? do I lock seams by going back n forth on each end as i sew? why make green accent colors no less than 4 inches long ? ok...3 questions. thanks.

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you could just make them look like blocks by making a straight seam. The little scraps of fabric just make it so that you do not have to hold your threads as you sew, and you do not have to trim after. I do not lock the seams as they will get stitch over after locking them. And if you cut the seams less than 4" you will have a very small green piece in between. If you are going to straight stitch the ends together you can go smaller.Hope this helps:-)

    How can you make a queen size strip quilt

    • @SewVeryEasy
      @SewVeryEasy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would of course need more fabric and then when you go to cut it down, you will have to stop at the larger size:)thanks for asking

    • @donnarichey144
      @donnarichey144 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, i have never made a quilt. You were vague saying I would need more material, which would be how much and then you said cut it down . I am lost.

      You'll need three jelly rolls. Proceed as for a regular jelly roll quilt with each roll, but when you get to 16 rows in each, stop. Press all seams in the same direction for each piece, then sew the three sections together. You should have approx. a 96"L x 72"W top. Borders can be added for more width or length. I watched some videos by Jean the Jelly Roll Queen on TH-cam and she details this process. Hope this helps.
