I was a Theatre major in college back in the early 90s. I read this play in an anthology my freshman year and when I was a senior, I directed it. It was this play or nothing. Now that I'm in my middle-aged years, I want to act in it.
Back then they thought there were "carriers," truthfully there were no carriers. If you were HIV positive, you'd eventually contract AIDS. It just took some people longer then others. I know, I was there from beginning to now. By 1996 I lost all my friends. My kid brother was HIV positive in 1987, he got sick on and off throughout the 90s until the "cocktails" came out, and he's still with us today. Healthy and still working.
I'm one of the few people that actually saw "Safe Sex" on Broadway (I think it was at the Lyceum) the show closed after 6 days...I thought it was brilliant and clearly ahead of its time
That's because Harvey is the same person, and there was a hell of a lot to be pissed off about during that period. He was one of very few people who worked to let others know if the horrors perpetrated then, and those people who suffered... from HIV/AIDS, of course, but moreso from the callous, intentionally cruel, disregard shown by the Reagan Administration for everyone affected.

First time seeing this, I cried.
Remember watching this when it first aired on HBO. Stockyard and Harvey, so brilliant! So weird to see how young they both were back then.
Amazing. On all characters. Has always had an impact on me since I was a kid.
Revisit time and again. Harvey, Stockyard... Brilliant. Thank u.

So sad but so good
So powerful

why does Harvey always seemed pissed off or mad about something? This was his same character in Torch Song
He was pissed off. His entire community was being shunned and left to die.
