    Though my primary uke is a tenor, I love my bright orange soprano. Everyone needs a soprano. Non uke players seem drawn to the little instrument. Maybe it is less intimidating. I love taking it to nursing homes and passing it around for residents to strum after our group plays. Guaranteed to bring smiles. 😎

      That’s great to hear Shirley! I agree with you… There’s something about the smaller size that is very inviting and of course adorable 😉 That’s wonderful that you do that kind of service work… My work at a cancer hospital had a similar effect for patients & families there. Thanks for watching and saying hello 😊

    Stu, there is so much love and appreciation shown for this unique little soprano. I also have a sentimental soprano that I love to play. Although it just came into my possession during the Covid-19 lockdown last year, she is a lovely 1959 Kamaka with a sweet and bright voice. She is light as a feather, completely void of cracks and fret spurs, with a super slim neck and easy to strum. Although she’s a bit challenging to finger pick as she has a one piece fret-mounted neck with no additional fretboard, which makes for a nice low action and wonderful to fret chords.

Anyone got an Aklot mahogany tenor like me..... wow what an instrument. under £60 and it easily rivals and outperforms ukes which are £1000+. the sound has me smiling all day long. Intonation is unbelievable, keeps tune extremely well and the build quality in general is sublime. Really enjoy learning these blues techniques Stu. keep up the good work and God bless

    That was BEAUTIFUL! I was given a Fender 'Grace Vanderwaal' soprano uke for my birthday in March and am slowly getting very into it! In fact last night I performed at a 70th birthday party in front of around 50 people and sang and played a version of 'happy birthday' My uke journey has only just begun and I hope it goes on for many years to come. The legendary George Formby used to live very close by so his soul inspires me! Thanks for a great post - love the song and will strive to get to that level of playing in the coming years! Cheers from Manchester, England.

    Loved the story about your soprano, and it sounds great too! Your ukulele tricks always make me smile😀. My first ukulele was a soprano that I bought in Hawaii for $10 at the International market. It was very small. I enjoyed playing it and put new, better strings on it after a while. Now it belongs to a friend of mine😀. I never thought ukulele playing would become such an important part of my life and bring me so much happiness!

    I started to play with a soprano, but also tried concert and tenor. I always came back to the soprano because from my point of view it produce the most typical ukulele sound for my ears. Located in Germany I got 3 ukuleles from BRÜKO. Custom made with arched backs and long concert necks to have a bit more space to play on the upper neck. But I also have an ANUENUE Moonbird concert UC 200, which is a very nice instrument.

    Hey Stu,
    I’m pretty good with identifying wood species, so my thoughts are:
    Soundboard is made of Sitka Spruce. I’ve included sample photos for reference. Notice the similarity in the wide grain pattern down to narrow grain pattern in the sample versus “Peanut”.
    The neck is likely a mahogany species, although too hard to tell from the video.
    The finish is orange shellac, a durable and common finish made from bug excretions and alcohol (see below). Shellac is impervious to almost everything except alcohol and has been around forever. It is actually an amber finish at first, then ages nicely to the warm finish of Peanut now.
    I’ve made a few instruments in my time - a mountain dulcimer and a 13/14 hammered dulcimer. The mountain dulcimer had a Sitka Spruce soundboard. The hammered dulcimer has a native (NW PA) black cherry soundboard and a black walnut frame that provides a bright, clean sound.
    I hope this helps. 😎
    Sorry - not sure how to add photos to this comment. I’ll work on it.

    I have a Kala soprano. It’s also a powerful little thing. A lot the sound has to do with where the body meets the neck! It meets at the twelfth fret on yours and mine, that’s ideal for any sized uke or guitar.
    More often these days they are set at the fourteenth fret so people can reach farther. But it’s worse for the sound.
    I have a vintage uke too. It’s a tenor made by Gibson in the 20s! It’s set at the twelfth fret and it’s as loud (or louder) than my resonator uke!

      Thanks for watching and saying hello…Lucky you on having a vintage Gibson! I agree with you on the 12th fret meeting the body… The balance that it creates with the words residence is powerful… I can hear it on my classical guitars 😊

    I've shied away from a soprano uke because the narrow frets can't really accommodate my wide fingers. I do like the bright sound of the soprano though. And yes, I'd love a tutorial on this song, one of my favorites! Thanks.

    I have a Flea soprano. But I put a low G string on it. Gives it a much richer sound. I don't care for the friction tuning pegs, almost impossible to get it finely tuned. I can only get it "close enough" but at least it stays stable there for months. The 4th fret on the A string and the 3rd fret on the E string is dead, won't ring no matter what pressure or placement of fingers is used. I don't play [or sing] well enough to justify getting a better uke so I just deal with it.

    I don't have a soprano uke. I have no need of one. Strictly tenors for me.
    Good video. I like the histories of things.

    I have a Martin S0 soprano ukulele. The action is poor. The tuners are hopeless and the tone is SUBLIME! For a ukulele made in Mexico it has an incredible sound. The build is excellent. I have a hundred reasons to give it up but Oh … the music it makes. I’ll keep it for now. 🎶👨🏻‍🦳 MikeinMinnesota

      Hey Mike…Thanks for saying hi and watching. Tone will always win my heart over. That said, it’s nice to have a comfortable action as well 😆 Perhaps a local luthier can lower it (sometimes there’s not much that can be done).

    I have s Ohana soprano SK21. I have a question. Is yours also difficult to tune? A slight turn, almost nothing, gives 1 note difference... 🤔

    • @UkuleleZen
      @UkuleleZen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ohana ukes are very nice indeed. These tuning pegs are so old that yes I do have a heck of a time turning them in tuning them… Luckily, once it settles I really don’t need to tune in much… Unless a certain toddler starts to play with them 😉

    Is it a handmade uku?? So lovely uku

    • @UkuleleZen
      @UkuleleZen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Moli! I’m not sure… i’m pretty sure there were some handmade elements to it… But most likely it was made in a factory not a one at a time workshop.
