  • If you have a soprano uke, what do you like or not like about it? I took a green Kala kiwi soprano ukulele with me when I visited my mom in the last years of her life. It gave us something to do when talk was too difficult.

As a beginner ukulele player of 9 months, a petite mature female, I find the soprano size of ukulele is best for me. But to play comfortably without a strap, I must be sitting down.
Landmark for me: two nights ago
I played a mini concert on my soprano ukulele into
my Smartphone for my brother when
he was in the hospital. He said I came over the phone loud & clear. My "performance" was also over-heard by
a nurse in the room at the time.
I said to tell the hospital I was giving
music therapy to relax & cheer up my
brother. He would have preferred a visit from a therapy dog or cat, but that was not given to him.

I love your story, Phyllis. At your own pace, you can begin to video your concerts and share with the world!! Ukelandia, 100 Days of Ukulele at sites where you can post your videos on FB. Or, start your own TH-cam channel!

I agree whole heartily with everything you say about the soprano Rick. For me they are The only ukulele, if anything I would go sopranino befor going bigger concert or tenor .

Thanks. That's an interesting tip! I've never played a ukulele smaller than soprano. Rich

Necessity is the mother of invention. That Portuguese sailor that wanted a string musical instrument that would fit in his foot locker hence the ukulele was born..

And it wasn't a baritone ukulele, for sure!

Always happy to see you playing a soprano. You really have to hug them, not just out of love but to properly position them for playing. Very different handling from a baritone 😃 I recall that you bought a Flight long neck travel soprano but did not like it. Just wondered why. Personally I find the Nova minis to be too bright. The Flight Tus and Ultra travel series have a more balanced sound. And if you think that a Nova mini is small try a Martin soprano. Tiny body but big sound.

Thanks for sharing your experience with soprano ukuleles, Jeff. The Flight ukulele I bought had a bubble plastic back as I recall. I've only had one Flight ukulele so it should be on my channel somewhere. I was curious about Flight ukes but after that experience I've lost interest. Considering the many wonderful soprano ukuleles I have I see no need to buy another one! That really goes for the other size ukuleles too. I'm stuffed!!

@@richdavis4007 - I have several Flight ukes; mostly the Travel series of different finishes. You can get used to the bowl shape; especially when you use the strap (as you normally do). I have the soprano/Travel, long neck (soprano body/concert neck) and concert sizes (being a cat afficionado, my favorite Flight concert is TUC-Kitty, with a matching kitty strap).

If I could fit my fingers on the frets of a soprano I'd have kept one. Love the size, love the sound of a good one, just can't squeeze my fingers enough to make clear sounding chords. Still haven't bought a baritone yet.

Sometimes I envy folks with smaller hands and thin fingers. I've worked with my hands for decades without thought that some day I might want to play piano or ukulele. They are a bit stiff and swollen but not as bad as they might be. These days, I wear rubber gloves working with tools and in the garden.
