I owned a coffee shop for a few years. We had a customer who had cerebral palsy. It took about four visits before he was comfortable coming into the shop with his driver. When I met him, his cerebral palsy was quite advanced. But I know enough ASL to do some very basic communications, and with his unresponsive hands, it was fun trying to interpret. Anyway, every time he would have an appointment, outting, grocery shopping, whatever, he would stop in and have lunch. He became one of our favorite customers. He was actually hilarious. All of my staff took it upon themselves to learn some rudimentary ASL (I did not ask, I did not require). They found him delightful as well. And yes, he made a bit of a mess--his brain was sharp as a tack, his body refused to obey commands. Some of my other customers gave him a side eye, until every single one of us staired them down without speaking a word. I never had a spoken conflict, but as soon as we saw it coming to a boil, the other customers knew they were in deep sh*t. When he died, I closed the coffee shop the afternoon of his funeral. Me and my entire staff went to his funeral.

Story three: The manager who failed to support his worker is the kind of jerk who makes other managers look bad. When you employ the handicapped you are participating in an act of social responsibility and human kindness that is totally destroyed if a manager fails to support the individual when the ableists act out. Kudos to the company for accommodating the disadvantaged worker and a mouthful of ostomy product to the manager who made no attempt to teach the Karen when the opportunity arose.
A Tim Horton's I used to stop at thirty years ago made a point of hiring handicapped workers, including one young woman whose face had serious burn scars that hurt to look at. I was impressed that the owner would hire customer service people with physical scarring and contacted them to congratulate them for their caring approach. The owner thanked me for my support, and told me that there had been a number of very ugly calls about "hiring gimps and cripples." I expressed my dismay at the callous behaviour and the owner thanked me profusely.
The owner then told me that the girl in question had been burnt in a deep fryer accident at another fast food provider, who then laid her off because she was had to look at. I have always thought that owner was an excellent human being and made a point of buying my after shift coffee there until I finally retired.

I have a friend with asthma, and when she'd visit me, I would even go out on my porch to smoke, in my own house, just so it wouldn't bother her. Hell, even when I was in the house or car of a smoker, I would check if it was okay for me to light up inside because some people don't like having the smell or the residue in their house or car.

Last story: non-addicts generally don't understand how the drug (nicotine) worms its way into the addict's life and personality, so that fulfilling that craving becomes *the* most important thing, and seems completely normal.

Story 2: If Karen was in such a hurry then why did she get a full cart of stuff, obviously she had time to walk all over the store to get what she needed & wanted to fill the cart up.
Story 3: That manager should have just taken Karen's complaint and trashed it once Karen was gone. She said I was being a health nut. I told her she was being a bad mother. She didn't like that. Flash forward to present day and I heard that her now-grown son and daughter have virtually nothing to do with her and she has been barred from seeing her grandkids. • @gauravminz8337
      @gauravminz8337 ปีที่แล้ว +2

My guess is that they would have probably filed some sort of discrimination lawsuit because the EM did say that she would have the wine and the EK would have the coke, and declining them could have other consequences. It was smart of OP to give the verbal warning that there would be consequences if the EK were then given the wine to drink. Now if the whole thing goes to court, the audio recording would come under due diligence on OP's part that they adequately provided the info on the illegality of serving alcohol to a minor, and the audio of the EM verbally accepting the terms and then violating said terms would also prove her to be a liar, and therefore load the case against EM and her family.
The best part about such protocols and methodologies is that doing your own due diligence absolves you of crime while it adds weight for your case.
Although, to avoid such incidences, an added protocol that we have here (of which I recently experienced first hand) is that the restaurant with the liquor licenses should have two separate sections and in one section no alcohol must be served. It is in this section that all adults accompanying a minor must be seated, or else the security comes up marching to prevent entry in the premises. Usually the wait-staff in the alcohol section politely guides the clients away from the alcohol section and towards the non-alcohol section while a guard gets ready to move in if all attempts are resisted.
I accidentally walked into said section while my cousin (the minor) was talking on her phone and just blindly following me. Although it took about 5 seconds to completely process the info, but there was no resistance on my part, and that's when I noticed the few things from the protocol, like the guard getting up from his position, the lightning quick reflex of the server directing us to the other section, etc.

    Mom's Encounter with Karen
Some Background - My mother is a cashier at a local grocery story, where she's called Momma J, because she's a mother to everyone that's thirty-five or younger. She's also a chatterer - folks get into her line just to chat with her. Everyone loves her (for the most part). I also happen to work there, dealing with produce. Now, I will say this, she, and myself, are both white - needed for later.
Now, I don't like using Karen, as I had a very nice babysitter with that name, so let's call this person AW for Argumentative Woman. Also of note, she's dark-skinned.
I'd gone up towards the Break Room, and caught the tail end of the situation, or the middle, actually, and I saw AW looking at my mother with more than a bit of anger. She then jumped into another lane. I actually asked my mother what was going on. She told me, "I'll tell you later." She did this to keep me from getting involved, as I'd of done something crazy (not easy being a high-functioning autistic at times).
A while later, as we walked out, I asked her what happened.
"I've encountered a few Karens, but that's the worst I've encountered so far," she said.
Apparently, AW had come into the line with a handful of things in her arms, claiming that she was just buying one item, and had bought the other things prior. Policy says to ask for any prior receipt - it's a CYA, as it were. Mother asked her for it. AW wouldn't show one. Mother's like, "I'm sorry, but it's policy." Offended, AW goes to the next line - same result. She then goes to the Manager, and tries to claim that my mother is being racist. Cue not only cashiers, but customers, many of whom are of darker-skin tones (African-American, Latino, whatever) coming to my mother's defense, along with the manager......
Like I said, EVERYONE loves Momma J.
I think AW left after that - I know that I had to bring back a bunch of produce stuff - don't know if it was related.

So in the UK, underaged patrons CAN drink alcohol with their family on the conditions that:
    1. The parent/legal guardian orders it for them and
    2. It is in certain establishments (like a family pub, not a bar)
The EK screwed up by ordering it herself.

Story One: As a child growing up in Australia in the 70's, sometimes as a family treat we would go to a pub, sit in the beer garden and have a meal and a drink, and as a young teen it wasn't unusual for dad to ask for a shandy (beer and lemonade) for us when he placed the drinks order. We used to get one small shandy and from then on it was lemon soda ... never had any issues, mind you we were polite and respectful.

I hope OP in the third story reports both Karen so she could get banned from the store and the manager for how he handled the situation. Let me tell you if It I is there I wouldn’t let that pink broad go easily I would go off on her and I will go off on the manager to for punishing he’s employee when she literally did nothing wrong I will not tolerate any of that able ism.

Story 3. It seems to me to be a good place for a regular customer to step in. Someone who won’t have a dog in the fight. “Madam, why are you trying to cover up most of your face? And doesn’t it take a lot of effort just to walk when you’re carrying a hundred pounds of snotty attitude wherever you go?” Then again, I’ve been shopping at the same supermarket since 2006, wear my Disabled Veteran ballcap legitimately, and still know and can accomplish some compliance holds that meet the “minimum force necessary to ensure compliance” standard.

My nephew worked in a pub, my eldest granddaughter had a fake id, when another nephew called and asked her age, I told the truth, I didn’t want anyone getting in trouble because she was underage drinking. It’s a risk she took, messed around and was found out.
