What I have an issue with, is how the Karen and the old lady thought it was a great idea to act like OP’s time wasn't valuable as theirs. I will never understand people who think it's okay to make decisions on someone else's behalf as if they don't have the autonomy or awareness to decide for themselves.
I don't have children myself as I decided back in my twenties that I was child-free (I'm midway through my 40s now). It's just staggering how some types of parents (not all), think that they deserve special concessions, privileges, to have everyone bend over backwards for them and hand them everything they want in life through no effort on their part solely because they made the life choice of having children.
Conversely, I know some really wonderful people who totally dig being parents and they absolutely understand why I'm child-free. Raising kids is a lot of work. I'm an uncle five times over and I have two godsons. I also worked in child care back in my early twenties. That was my final test on deciding whether or not I wanted to be a parent. I think you can figure out what my decision was.

@@TheFlyingClutchman You are more or less correct - not just in trains but in most public places like libraries, shops, etc - but some Japanese (typically young people traveling in groups) do that anyway - and get yelled by older people. But I guess locals living near touristy areas at some point get fed up by very loud tourists and some proceed to berate them in very broken English - yes, causing even more commotion in process.
Japanese people as a whole are quite respectful and mindful of social boundaries - at least they do well to keep such social moniker publicly. But sadly even that country did not entirely escape the plague of karenship which appears to be an international disease.
Please understand that since unlike US or Europe historically-isolationist island nation Japan is very mono-national and mono-racial, they had much less experience with inter-cultural tolerance and tend to project their frustration with some foreigners (many of whom are in fact very obnoxious from their cultural standpoint) to all of them. They typically aren't doing it on purpose and not because they are thinking of themselves of a "greatest race/nation" but because of their history their cultural understanding of interracial/national tolerance is still not entirely caught up with modern societal standards.

In most custody agreements, the law is highly in favor of the mother. Imagine how badly this woman must've treated her daughter, to the point that she didn't even get supervised visitation and actually received a restraining order.

I always knew she was a bit weird, but that had to be way out there bizarre. And finding it funny!?

We don't have all the details because the story was told from the nanny's perspective, but given how the Mom behaved here, I'm going to assume that the reason for the divorce was either child neglect or abuse.
Possibly, she was mistreating her daughter and the father didn't know because he was so busy with work, hence why he eventually hired the nanny telling the story.
The Mom could've been neglecting or even abusing her daughter, and when the father found out, he divorced her and the courts granted him custody.
Though, I found it legitimately hilarious when the Mom said that the courts and cops had no right to keep her from her daughter. I wish I could tell her "um...lady, yes they do! The courts made legal declarations that you no longer have parental rights and are no longer allowed to see your daughter, and the police are there to reenforce that and make sure that the laws are being upheld. And besides, you just pulled a gun out on someone with the intent to shoot...you ain't EVER getting near this little girl ever again!"

The state I live in tends to be heavily in favor of the mothers sadly. When working security though there was a supervised visitation with the father at the CPS office where he thought it would be a smart idea to bring the kids mother. This mother had no right to see her children which was surprising until the person who brought the kids for their visitation said she was going to leave with the kids as the mother couldn't be there, to which the mothers reply was that she was going to go out to her car and get her gun and come back into the office if we didn't let her see her kids. Became very clear why this woman was not allowed near these children and their father lost all rights to them as well for bringing her along. Felt bad for those kids having horrible parents like that and I hope they are doing well.

On the other hand, he didn't need to get so aggressive and verbally attack the mom. First off, it's not that big of a deal. And second, it was the old lady who suggested it, the Mom didn't say anything nor did she even act on it. There was no need for OP to get so testy

Story 2: Japanese people are taught to be polite to one another, but many of them especially the older generations can be very xenophobic against 'outsiders'. Westerners are thought of as being incredibly untrustworthy, and its very hard for visiting outsiders to even rent in Japan because landlords are convinced outsiders will just break the lease and leave the country, so sometimes even if they do rent to you, you have to pay the full lease up-front. It doesn't help that outsiders stick out in Japan like a sore thumb.

100% NTA for the last story. The old lady can't volunteer other people's places in line, only her own. I actually went back to re-read the story. If the old lady had said for the mom to skip ahead of herself only and then the OP said what they did, my verdict would be different. But the fact that the old lady told the mom to "skip waiting in line and go to the front because she had a child" solidifies my NTA verdict. You opening up your legs and getting knocked up doesn't give you priority or a right to always go first. Other people's time is just as valuable as yours, and no one has any right to to say it doesn't. You can give up your place and time for mothers, but don't expect others to follow suit.
Edit: I wanted to add this for Dark Fluff - I'm an introverted and quiet person, and I hate confrontation and drama. But there comes a time where you can't keep quiet need to speak up and stand up for yourself. That's exactly how entitled people become entitled and get away with it - because no one says anything. We can go and say "Oh, they could have been nicer about it", but the point still remains.

word to the wise for any cat owners, don't leave your cat outside unattended. They harm the natural environment by killing off native wildlife (mostly birds), and they run a higher risk of being hurt or killed by larger wild animals, cars and cruel people. you can take them for walks or accompany them while they're outside, just don't let them go wherever they want. Also microchip your pets if they do manage to runaway.

The barn cats we had lived outside almost completely on their own. Any "damage" they did consisted of controlling rodents.
As for larger animals... they were faster and nimble than anything around, and I saw the momma cat make it clear to our German shepherd that momma was the boss. I pity any creature that tried to attack those cats.

    • @melkiorwiseman5234
      @melkiorwiseman5234 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The correct procedure if you believe a pet is being abused is to call the appropriate authorities (in Australia, that would be something like the RSPCA). You only take the pet if you believe its life may be in danger if you don't take it, and then as soon as possible, you turn it over to the local pound or similar authority and explain exactly what happened and that you only took the animal out of fear for its life. That covers your backside.
If the pound can't contact the owner, you may be able to get yourself a pet for life.

Story 3. I'll never understand why some parents try to get randos to give them their belongings for their children.
First off, way to teach your kids to not talk to or accept things from strangers when you're going up to a stranger and asking him for his DVD player, Karen!
Second, yes he's a grown man and that means he's entitled to watch whatever the Hell he wants. If he wants to watch cartoons like Tailspin or even freaking SpongeBob, you are no one to tell him not to. It's a free country.
And lastly, think about the children? Like he said, if he had kids, he would do that. But since he doesn't and it's your kids we're talking about, he has no obligation to care about what they want. You're not family to him and so what you do or want is none of his business nor is it his problem that you couldn't be smart enough to bring your own DVD player to entertain both your kids.
That's your fault as a parent, not OP who is a random person just trying to enjoy his spring break.

Why do they feel themselves that entitled? I'm starting to think there's some cult out there that breeds Karen's. Cult of The Karen

It's usually parents too lazy to actually parent that raise spoiled brats that grow up to be even more spoiled adults. Also the "Karens" are usually not very smart to begin with. Because even if you're raised wrong, if you have any intelligence at all, you can figure out how to be a civilized adult.

@@damien678 Nope - not really anything new. Personally I truly do not like Anime - to me it’s not very pleasing to even look at and rather crude in the drawing. I grew up on great animation and good cartoons on TV. I love the Disney movies but just don’t like what Disney has become and I have noticed they are remaking their very good animation movies with live and animation. I think it’s dumbing down the kids - my granddaughter is only allowed the original animated movies and I’m happy with that! Sure do wish my Mom hadn’t thrown away all those old comic books I had back in the 1950s when I went away to college. Oh, and I love Mad Magazine but haven’t looked at an issue for a very long time.

Story 1: Laws regarding cats in Australia vary by state and council. Some (like mine) have a 24 hour curfew. I’m very much of the mind that cats should be contained in your property as dogs are expected to be, not just because of the damage they do to the native wildlife, but because it’s so much safer for them. Cars, other cats, horrible people, skin cancer from sun exposure, more exposure to diseases, etc. Having said that, it’s never ok to just take a cat in - if you’re concerned about the welfare of a wandering/stray cat you turn it in to a vet, not take it upon yourself to rehome it. And you absolutely do not poison or otherwise harm it.

Last story: if the old lady wants the mum to go in front of her, no problem. But she doesn't get to make that choice for others in the line. As for the mum feeling uncomfortable in a public space because of people like the OP - perhaps it was the OPs comment about not bringing the baby to the store that caused it. She may not have anyone else to leave the baby with, or to shop for her. So OP, you may be tired of entitled parents, but at the same time she may be tired of judgmental people. But yeah, everybody sucks here

I once stayed at a campsite that was part of a campground owned by a large national chain of such ( they use a picture of a certain cartoon bear in their logo) I pitched my tent, and left my site to get something to eat in town, ( I always pitch my tent so that my head will be higher than my feet, inportant later) imagine my surprise, when I returned to find two adult males who were in the process of moving my tent! They had already pulled the stakes from the rock hard ground, bending them beyond repair. I was furious, and demanded to know what the thought they were doing, one of sneered and said " this pos is facing the wrong way, and it's violating our privacy" here they had a large travel trailer with all sorts of gear hanging off of it while we stood there arguing, the park ranger arrived and on hearing the problem sided with me as I was there first, well these two were poor losers, but left me alone or so I thought, they proceeded to haul out lawn furniture, a few motor scooters a large stereo system and ( strangest of all) a portable plastic picket fence, that they put up within inches of my tent, they then set loose two small but very vocal dogs, they put up strings of Japanese style plastic lanterns and turned their site in to party central! When I went to purchase new tent stakes from the camp store I wasted no time in registering a complaint with the management of the place but my complaint fell on deaf ears, the night that followed was full of bright lights, loud music, and generally loud and drunken behavior, and my biggest thought was these people are supposed to be camping? What little sleep I got was interrupted at dawn by the two dogs barking, upset because they wanted to be fed I pulled camp and got out of there swearing I would never stay in a campground owned by that outfit again.

That last story reminds me of a situation a few weeks ago - I wet shopping and there'd been a festival close to the store. Many people had only 2-3 items and I had my cart full. Normaly I go in line and wait for my turn, but this time I had to wait for the train back, so I did let a few people in front of me. There'd been a mom and her daughter (around 10yo) and when I let them in front, the daughter said "mom, it's not okay to cut in line, we have to wait our turn" her mom said "It's okay, he's let us in front" and that's when the daughter thanked me like 5 times - it's sometimes moments like this that make my day. I told the mom that her daughter is raised well for being that polite and honest.

Last Story: One thing to remember is that there's a theory of the law that states how silence is a sign of acceptance. The old lady was in the wrong for suggesting the mom cut everyone, but put OP in a position where not saying anything would take away her right to object.
Another thing is the disrespect that old lady gave assuming OP's situation... I always try and consider if there would be a valid reason for someone to act in a certain way, and in this case, I played the story back with the added detail (most likely fabricated) that OP recently had a miscarriage. Which then puts the grandma and mom fully in the wrong.
My theory is if someone's claims (such as the grandma claiming to think of the children and telling OP she's ungrateful for being barren) can so easily be overturned, then it can't be held as a true statement and becomes one of entitlement.

That kidnapping mom was out of her mind in a very bad and dark way and I'm just glad that Ellie had a nanny like the one she had because not everybody would have been able to respond in a similar fashion especially when faced with a gun probably for the first time in their life not to mention a crazy person holding it and pointing it at them. It makes total sense that the nanny was studying child psychology to help kids.

There are people in Japan that feel that only those born in Japan should be allowed to live there. I have seen people in Japan be asked that question, and I would say a good 20% say foreigners should stay out of the country. Even more, when asked is it okay for a Japanese to marry a non-Japanese person. Sadly, every country have those types of people.

Story 1. Outside cats should NOT be a thing full stop, having wiped out over 50 species, the non native "house cat" subsect of cats compete with humans for most animals made extinct due to lack of natural predators in many places. In places like australia with a sensitive ecosystem for example they are shoot on site pest animals but they're also invasive elsewhere too despite everyone drooling over them. Yes I like cats too but they are to remain inside and not killing off the local wildlife

      @damien678 ปีที่แล้ว

My FIL used to do that. I don't appreciate his gleeful attitude about it, though.
I wouldn't be able to kill any cats here tbh, but I do wanna learn how to hunt rabbits. I honestly also adore rabbits and love them, but it's at least more normal in my head to hunt and eat them than it would be for cats. I wouldn't wanna kill anything I wouldn't then use.
I'd absolutely get in the way of someone trying to hurt someone's pet, or feral kittens (because they can still become someone's family) but, with a heavy heart, I gotta say I don't begrudge those that have treated feral cats as pests.
