as a hearing student, the more ASL I learn the more I wish everyone could sign! sometimes other hearing people mouth words slowly to try and communicate silently or through a window and I never understand it, lipreading is so damn hard T-T
I remember when I was younger noticing two people signing while waiting for a train to pull out, one was inside the train and the other was on the platform. I thought that was hella awesome, something people who don't know sign language wouldn't be able to do. They were just so chill and having a long and detailed conversation, which passed the time and was obviously a nice way to say ciao before the train pulled out.
As a HOH person who is only becoming immersed in ASL and the Deaf community (hearing upbringing) at 15, life is so much easier now that I can sign. I also feel a lot less alone in my experiences! Finally I know people who can understand my problems and stuff.

I am Hungarian and hard of hearing myself. I've been learning ASL (more from a Sign Supported English heavy perspective to get used to signing more) and Hungarian Sign Language and my dream is to become an interpreter / translator. That's the good thing about learning two different sign languages that I can translate too. Can't wait to learn more. I always loved sign language since I have been introduced to it as a child and wanted to learn it straight away but unfortunately there aren't many opportunities to learn in my country, especially as a child ir adolescent. As I had more and more hearing loss the more it interested me. I think it's fascinating how different ASL BSL and HSL are. They are all very beautiful. I have been following you for a while and just love your energy and your attitude to life. Can't wait to see more of you and the content you create. 🤟🏼
Sadly I’m the unfortunate one not having access to ASL because of a hearing parent. And learning at my local community college I’m sorta conflicted when a hearing people learn asl for both negative n positive reasons. I think most ASL classes should include deaf history because a many few don’t understand they can’t make their own sign names cursing in asl is funny
"I’m sorta conflicted when a hearing people learn asl " - This is a thought experiment for many languages, traditions and culturally appropriated antics. A great place to go if someone want's a dose of anxiety😅 . Just consider the uniqueness of how you interpret the world and how those hearing people don't have that very beautiful way of experiencing the world. Those other classmates may use ASL for their "childish" games, but the emotional experience and perspectives you have may allow for some meaningful depth and exploration that reaches further than what those others could ever grasp at. People have their reasons for learning something. I can hear, I guess well enough, and that sensation can leave a sensitive person exhausted and seeking quietness in a world moving so fast. Looking for other senses to focus on.
I'm hearing but learned ASL as a child because my best friend is deaf. Now I'm teaching my step daughter ASl because I want her to be able to have wonderful friendships with no barriers. It's a beautiful thing when we can all communicate with each other.
Hi there! I just started watching some of your videos and they've been really helpful! I am hearing, but I've been losing my voice. Communicating has been a challenge and so I started learning ASL. Made me realize how important it is in every day use even if I am hearing. I wish they could have taught us this in school
Finally some positive things being said about deafness! Love the video! P.S. I recommend you get someone to Accurately caption your videos, your voice isn't too bad but there are words that are a bit harder to understand and you sign quite fast. You can just have a family member do it if you can. (This was not meant to sound rude but I understand if it does seem rude, but I mean for this to be polite)

I've been holding off on taking more ASL classes until I can take them in person but I've been finding your videos to be super helpful in making sure that I don't lose all of my vocabulary. I see how good these are. I sleep well, I have minor hearing loss so I will hear plane. I try to hear people but don’t catch all that’s said. Learning ASL but it’s challenging me. Love it though.

Hey! Thanks for making the video! I recently discovered that I am losing my hearing, and I was feeling a little down until I watched this video. It is good to know that there are some positives in being deaf.
As someone who was born with hyperacusis...number 1 & 2 make me mildly envious.

Without my hearing aids, I’m almost completely deaf. I never got to learn ASL growing up because my family firmly believed that hearing aids were all I would ever need in life, and I’m expected to wear them no matter what. I got yelled at if I did not wear them. Without my hearing aids, I still hear crying, it just does not hurt. I still hear loud noises, they just don’t hurt. But with how I was raised, I sadly don’t fit in with either community. Deaf or hearing. I’m too deaf for the hearing community, and I don’t have the communication for the deaf community. I’m only now learning asl. I can barely do the alphabet. Maybe a few basic signs. I’m 26. I hate that it’s taken me this long to be able to start learning. My partner and his family have been doing their best to support me. His mom helped me get new hearing aids that Bluetooth to my phone like ear buds do. And they come with a microphone so I can hear whoever is wearing it, up to 6 feet away. But neither of them expect me to wear them if I don’t. I choose to now, because the ringing in my ears gets too loud sometimes. But it’s less stress now.
One semester of ASL and I’m changing my major!! #lovedeafculture

Would be awesome if everyone in the world learned sign language, it would be really useful even if none of the people in the conversation were deaf or hard of hearing. for example my workplace have loud machines and it's really hard to communicate or concerts where you almost need to scream into the ear of the other person to get your point across
Even though I'm learning Auslan not ASL I still find these videos entertaining and interesting.

I am hard of hearing. The ability to fall asleep while my wife is watching television is a benefit since the noise doesn't bother me. Likewise taking out my hearing aids on an airplane is so peaceful.

Cool so true that what I like about being hard of hearing, I can even interpret my deaf friends to help them, what hearing people are saying, or on tv and movies too! And I take off my hearing aids on the planes, so it'll be less noisy and distraction. Btw ur dog is cute, seem interest to see ur signing there also
Hi Chrissy. I'm loving your content so far. You have loads of fun personality and its great to see. I am just starting to learn ASL because I believe the deaf or hard of hearing community should be able to communicate with the hearing community as much as possible and it seems like alot of the hearing community expects the deaf community to compensate for that gap. I also wanna learn cause i wanna make content that both hearing and not hearing people can enjoy online. Im gonna go watch more of your videos. Have a lovely day.
I have worn hearing aids for around 30 yrs! Until two months ago! I had a severe to profound loss! But most of my hearing suddenly went so now I am profoundly deaf! I am from the UK where we use BSL but because of a brain injury when I was 20 I get brain fog & have a form of dyslexia so cannot sign or understand it! Luckily for me most you tubers put captions on their videos & I use a setting where you tube auto generate their captions!
Yes it's great for sleeping at night,also I have an indwelling Foley catheter because of nerve damage so I don't need the toilet at night also!
It's good being deaf when your on a bus or train! And the youngsters who have their music turned up full volume in their headphones! They could be the next generation of deaf people!☹️
I am hoping more powerful hearing aids will help! Here in the UK we get them for free but there is a wait! But I am also thinking about asking about a cochlear implant!
Another perk of being deaf is i use captions when watching TV so the volume does not disturb the neighbours!
The biggest plus point is you make new deaf/hoh friends on you tube & social media! 💖💖
Chrissy I don't have a problem understanding you I can't comment on your signing but I can understand you. I even listened to the video with no problems so I don't know just my two bits I realize people are just trying to help. How is college life?
Your videos are so uplifting. I am not deaf, but I have only one ear 😂😂 and I totally agree with the sleep one. I woke my roommates up accidentally one night by playing loud music because I was laying on my good ear and I couldn’t hear how loud it was. But it’s great because I don’t hear anything and sleep very well when laying on my good ear.
I love you videos and they have really opened my mind to how things work being deaf. I have learned so much and I even find myself throwing random trivia questions to friends about the things I have learned from you. Your spoken voice is progressing so well! I’m so happy for that! Is it because of the implant? Keep smiling and making videos! I also follow a TH-cam gal that is blind and she does the same sort of thing you do. Lots to learn! Cheers

I love #4 im hard of hearing (getting worse) but i LOVE picking up my camera and going on walks, mostly wildlife and i find that even though i do have some ability to hear that im more visual i love looking for things that you cant hear or that most wouldn't .. i love insects and strangely i love old decayed things. But even at work my coworkers are starting to pick up more that im visual and will point / gesture when they talk to me to help fill in what im missing with the masks. Added bonus being more visual as a guy ... i always notice new hair styles, shoes, outfits that most guys WOULDNT notice lol also thanks to you im starting to teach my 5 year old daughter sign language and learn as well which is helping me and her communicate better but it seems to have spilled over into my workplace now i have several co workers who are learning including my co manager. Its so nice that when my ears hurt from the noise at work that i can stick in my earplug and she will sign some of the instructions to me as well as speak so not only its easier on me but also so i can practice :) keep up the awesome work
I really wish to learn ASL especially with my hearing getting worse and me not always being able to rely on hearing aids or relate to hearing folks. Hoping to learn at a local community college this year! That is for your videos 💜💜💜

Thank you for making a couple of videos helping hearing people understand how hard the world is when everyone has a mask on!! Is there ANY tiny chance the Valid shirts will come back?? I just saw the video and I was so sad it was 2 years ago. That is just the message we need right now, when we try to communicate with people and they give that dismissive hand swat when I indicate I can't hear them :( I could point to my sweatshirt!

I started studying Quebec Sign (QSL) a few years ago.
I discovered that I began to get worse at spoken French as I grew more comfortable and fluent with sign. I suddenly had to put some mental effort into speaking and listening to spoken French, it became less "natural" (even though French is not my first language). Other people notice it more than I do.
So my question: do you find your sign gets worse as your speaking improves?

I get more bothered by the sounds of the wind and outside of the plane personally. And my ears still always hurt on decent. Don't know if that's relevant.

Hopefully, this isn't a stupid question, but even though you grew up speaking English as your first language, I'd presume it'd be more comfortable to use it. Even though ASL is your second language, what makes it more natural than English (even though it's a visual language, it's still second, which I presume would be harder)? Hopefully, this doesn't come across as insensitive. I'm just trying to understand your perspective better. (hard with autism)
And I definitely agree with the perks of being deaf and hard of hearing. However, I would love to not have to hear a screaming, crying baby on a flight and be able to sign underwater, from far away, and with your mouth full. Loved the video!
Deaf people have a barrier to hearing English and most deaf don't have any kind of barrier to communicate with sign language. So wouldn't you prefer to use the language that comes easier to you? Language barriers might not be a big deal when you're trying to communicate something simple but you can't have any deep meaningful conversations with language barriers. Which is why all hearing parents must learn ASL to communicate with their deaf children. Otherwise they are leaving those children out.
@@jjochems True, I just thought that since some deaf people still use and speak English even if they can't hear it well, other deaf people might feel the same way.
@@AnnieHarrison25 I can't speak for all deaf people. They all have their own individual preference. Some deaf people like using their voice to be understood by hearing people and some feel like it's something they have to do to be able to get jobs and form relationships. But hearing people often assume that deaf people can lipread like it's some magical skill and lipreading is very very difficult and no matter how skilled you are at it you are still going to miss a lot of information. Hearing people assume that it must be easy for the deaf but it's actually more difficult to lipread words that you never got the chance to hear. I can't imagine that deaf people prefer to communicate in a more difficult way, they just don't really have much of a choice because they live in a world that communicates with voice and they have to survive in that world just like the rest of us.

One bit of advice from a hearing person who understands some American Sign Language. You should try to get someone to closed caption your videos for you because I can barely understand you when you're talkin and you sign a little fast for me that I can't follow up with things that you are saying. Caption said on your channel now are Crap. So you should try to get your videos professionally closed captions or ask one of your family members if they can do it for you or one of your friends.
Deaf person here, it you want to be an Ally to our community you could caption the video yourself, instead of making Chrissy do it or making her hire someone.

I am hearing and have been learning ASL for a year almost. Your speech is actually amazing. I understood your voice and your signs which I don't get a lot of from anyone I know. Keep showing how amazing deaf people and ASL is. 🥰
