Someone once handed me a note "can you read and write?" after i told them I'm deaf. I wrote it down on note "no and no" and gave it to them. They was very bewildered and lost for words. Lol

I've worked as a bus monitor for a local school for the deaf, and in a public School with students that are both or deaf. Top 2 I've seen are, "so they read braille?" Or after telling the hearing person the student is deaf, but look at them or who ever you are talking to, and talk normally. "OH, I'M SORRY. CAN THEY HEAR ME NOW?" Yelling in my face.

Chrissy, I hope this hasn’t happened to you. I was actually misdiagnosed as MR as a kid solely due to my speech impairment! I have the last laugh since I have two college degrees. I truly hate that term (and refuse to use it). It took the APA over 40 years to change that term to intellectual disability.
I’m glad you are doing great with showing others that deaf doesn’t mean dumb. It angers me to no end when I see others mistreat people who they think are in the slightest different from them.

The most annoying thing I have ever experienced, is when someone says something and then turns around and says “ Don’t worry about it” and walks off. The other is “ Turn your hearing aids up” . People think hearing aids and cochlear implants make you hear perfectly, but they are wrong.

Many people don’t understand what hearing loss or deafness means in full context. There are many different things that can make communication difficult. Cochlear implants are designed to give the implanted person what is considered close to normal hearing. I am quite fortunate that my CI has worked well for me, while for some it doesn’t . They aren’t perfect yes, but are far better than hearing aids. I learned Australian sign language in high school, but don’t use it much today.

The only time I've asked people if they are deaf (using voice and ASL at the same time) is to confirm it because they could be mute or have some language processing disorder that makes it difficult for them to communicate. That and I ask if they prefer signing because I know some individuals might not or don't know the langauge. I'm trying to pick up ASL and it's really fun, I really love studying languages and sign is a new type of language for me, since I've only learned about spoken languages before. It's also a lot easier for me to pick up. I was always good with choreography in plays because the muscle memory of "when this situation happens, you do this" practiced over and over would make it almost instinctive. It's obviously not the same but my point is that muscle memory kind of brings me some peace of mind to practice it and just get comfortable with it. I also like the fact that you can't really be half paying attention to a conversation, you have to focus or you'll miss something. I think people would say less stupid stuff if every language was like that.

Chrissy.. you are quickly becoming my guru.. (once I finish cringing)
I feel like I've done every single stupid thing that you say not to do!!.. where were your videos before I started learning Auslan??? Lol
Every time I watch.. I sit & wait & watch & then I squint my eyes & cringe.. I think to myself, she's talking about me again.. Ive been learning sign language for ten days & Ive already managed to offend every deaf person in history.. all I wanted to do was learn something new & make some new friends..
Maybe one day it will be funny but at the moment.. I just feel like I'm the worst human being on the planet!!!
Thanks for your vids Chrissy.. you are hilarious!!! I'll get it right eventually..

One time I was like “Hey, I’m deaf in my right ear, could you stand on my left side so I can hear you better?” And they were like, “No, I can hear you perfectly” and I was like, “No, no, no, IM deaf in my right ear so if you could just like stand on my left side, it would be easier…” and they said, “But you can talk, you’re not deaf.”

I am trying to understand. I am totally deaf but have been hearing. I was glad to get the implant. At activation, my hearing did not happen immediately. Several days later words began to form. I have gone on to improve almost to normal hearing. Thus having the second implant proved to be phenomenally better than having just one. alone.
    Ok, that is my experience.
You are exceptionally intelligent with the gift of signing. I understand it to be a language in itself. Do I see it correctly that sounds are more of a distraction to you? Did the cochlear give you any level of hearing, or did you give up on it preferring what you know best? The signing seems to me so fast, I can't follow it. You are bright, exuberant, and beautiful. Is it just a different world?

I get confused about correctness of approach. I have read that the Deaf community is very blunt or direct, in general. If I meet someone and want to know best how to communicate with that person, asking if someone is deaf, hard-of-hearing or reads lips gets straight to the point of how that person prefers to communicate. My ASL teacher begins his lessons with basic questions like these.

This video is a bit old but I just ran into it. I've been severely hearing impaired for thirty years now. I have gone thru many sets of hearing aids. I have never learned sigh language. Sometimes friends and relatives are patient. But even my wife of 15 years is not. She has a real attitude, and I always have thought she would finally understand just how disabling hearing loss can be and how hard hearing impaired people work to understand and to not be a burden on others. To frequently, when I ask someone to repeat or I say I didnt quite get that, The response is negative. What I get back is , "don't worry about it". Or, "we'll take care of it". I've even gotten, " Look, if you just don't understand the issue, we'll get someone who does". As if to imply they think you are stupid. This article is called, "Things NOT to say to deaf people". Well, its not just what people say, it's how they act. They can't SEE this disability, so they don't understand it or have any patience or desire to work with it. If you have two broken legs, people can SEE, and understand, that you can't walk. Too frequently, people with hearing disabilities are treated as if they simply are not as smart as other people. Being able to understand speech and to be able to understand subject matter are not the same thing. But I've been hearing impaired so long now that I can usually cope and even laugh about it. My doc says it's to the point that even with the latest hearing aids, I will still miss about 45% of words, so implant time is coming. None of my friends sign. Non of my relatives do. Ridiculous since my mom, my sister, and one of her daughters have or have had severe hearing loss. Mom and sister are dead now. Anyway, this video just hit a nerve. Sorry so verbose.
But I must say, that girl is fantastic. What an attitude and personality. Incredible.
