Hearing Aids VS. Cochlear Implants

  • People confuse these two very different devices all the time! I had hearing aids starting at the age of two and got a cochlear implant surgery at age 20, so I think I have a little experience differentiating the two. Hope this helps!

I have a hearing aid on my left ear and a cochlear on my right ear. Soon going get my second cochlear. And a lot time at my school. People thinks I have just hearing aid and they try to talk to me . But I don't hear because I can hear better on my cochlear side. And can't hear good on my hearing aid side. And they be like oh I'm sorry or ugh whatever. But it depend on what helps YOU. So this video really explained it. Thanks Chrissy 💗

Thanks for sharing this information Chrissy! I didn't realize that receiving a cochlear implant would remove residual hearing - but it makes sense that it would. I learned something new today! ❤️

With that being said nothing is 100% and one could still lose residual hearing even with these advanced. Think it's just gotten a lot better

Hello, thank you for your video. My son (3) has EVA, he wears hearing aids, and we are learning ASL. Recently he has had a drop in his hearing and the ENT recommended we see a CI specialist for an evaluation. Chrissy, I’ve been following you since we found out about our son. Could you give us the pros/cons of your decision to get the CI? Have you experienced any shaming or negativity from either hearing or Deaf communities since? Thank you.

My daughter was born with significant hearing loss in both ears. She wore hearing aids as an infant but her hearing loss was progressive (she lost all of her residual hearing pretty fast). We waited as long as we could to get a CI and first exhausted every level of hearing aid available - just because once you get a CI (the internal electrode portion) that’s it for life. It’s hard since technology evolves so quickly. She still only has the one CI (she got it when she was 4) and really needs a second one since she gets little use out of her hearing aid (basically she just wears it to keep her auditory nerve stimulated). Our decision was not a popular decision but it has worked out well in her case. She is now 18 and a senior in college. The only negative things that happened were 1) when she was a baby someone told me she wasn’t a robot and shouldn’t wear hearing aids or get a cochlear implant and 2) her ASL teacher at her junior college had a negative attitude towards her being deaf but using a CI. Anyway, I hope our experience helps you. I know it’s a big decision and everyone’s situation is different. I also remember a lot of pressure to get her CI no later than the 4 year range since we were told the brain is still highly adaptable at that stage. Good luck.

chrissy!!! i've been following you for a while and today i just found out i am very very likely to be receiving a CI for my single sided deafness!!! i'm excited to finally be able to hear in both ears again- are there any things you wish you would've known before surgery? is there anything you recommend researching or looking up? i'd love to know :D!! thank you for making the content you do

I really enjoyed this video. Very easy to understand and I felt like I learned a lot! I didn't know with a cochlear implant you actually lost residual hearing.
Also, I really liked the computer voice interpreting and me. I like that I can turn that off as needed (as opposed to subtitles on the video which I can't really not look at). Very nice format.
I personally am not really into the meme videos in between, but that's just me. I know everyone uses those, so I assume everyone else likes it. Just adding my two cents :)

I have bad experiences with doctors and OTC hearing aids are $700+, so I think I just need to focus on learning ASL
I am neurodivergent too (ADHD, autistic) and probably would have a hard time with the feeling and sound of something in my ear/head.

That’s some serious equipment when doing CI. There is a next level that goes behind cochlea. Connects directly to nerve. Cool and serious technology but like you have said before, it’s an aid and not a cure.

No, she was silent and the closed captions were read by a text-to-speech voice.
