Imagine an intern who did their job like Jessie, running around at top velocity, flailing their arms randomly but still getting their assigned task done.
“She doesn’t want to assume Control.” “She thinks she’s more fit for a janitor role.” Jesse, buddy, those are practically the same thing in this scenario.
love, love, LOVE THIS GAME!! im beyond content that this video now exists, it totally makes sense! impressive way to marry dream-psychology subtly with the game's lore - that is not already found in other videos
This part of the game, this dream, is such a clever and beautiful way to make the game more fun, but also it is a perfect metaphor for modern life. Daycare, elementary school, secondary school, university, workplace. We are stuck in this dream, where our actions and the result of our actions are determined by the system or the people who run the system. We are told: "Do A, don't do B. Make sure C is a part of your life while trying to avoid D. Also, you better save time for E, otherwise, F will happen" and we, who are literally programmed by reward/punishment methods to listen and obey "authority", from the moment we could understand and speak, just take it as reality and a "right way" of living. Never actually questioning the process or results of the process. Until, just like Jessy in the 2nd phase, we start to feel like our lives are empty and something is wrong with our lifestyle, goals, and actions. But even then, all those years, all that sweat and tears, all those sacrifices we made to be who we are, to be able to stand where we stand, we don't want it to be all for nothing, so we keep living this nightmare, trying to numb that feeling that is telling us something is wrong. Trying to avoid those thoughts in our heads by gluing our faces to screens and consuming cheap, accessible entrainment. But just like Jessy, we need to take CONTROL of our own lives and build them around our OWN NEEDS AND VALUES, not the needs and values we've been taught since childhood. Only then we can wake up from this nightmare and live fulfilled, and happy lives, filled with meaning that is not foreign to us. This is why I consider this game a masterpiece. Is it fun, entertaining, intriguing, and original with just the right amount of complexity. But the game itself is also a dark satire of modern society and corporate/governmental systems. Which makes it so much more, than a game. I would love Remedy to keep adding content to this universe. New games, books, comics, movies. Anything. Universe of CONTROL is so entertaining, in my humble opinion.
For Jesse, the realizations in dreams have been about self-overcoming, Janitor to Director. I wonder what will happen to Dylan when he'll wake up. A guy who was supposed to be the director and now is aware of multiple realities. I always learn a ton of new things from the lectures. Great video.
One thing about Jesse's Hiss Vision that's easy to miss. Dylan TOLD her exactly what would happen in it. In one of his 'I had a dream' speeches to her, he describes seeing her in exactly the situation she finds herself in. It makes me wonder if he either knew what vision she would create for herself...or if he created it for her himself.
Awesome video! Just a quick note, though. We don't know if every infected mind, after HRA failure, had the same level of "defense" as Jesse's. Maybe some of the minds were infected too far for Jesse to save after her awakening
Fair enough. At the very least all the named NPCs and random rangers/scientists were saved. It wouldn't surprise me if some were too far gone by the time she flipped the HRAs back on.
@@GamingUniversityUoG We know about the all powerful protagonist shield, don't we? XD The main cast had to be saved, anyway but I suppose there isn't much/any evidence supporting this hypothesis
I can't help but feel bad for Jesse. She was thrust into this world of chaos and forced to take this role of leadership she didn't want. All she wanted was her remaining family back. Her brother. Lord knows what will happen with him. Jesse really is a tragic character when you think about it. This giant paranormal/supernatural event happens. She loses her hometown, her friends, her parents. She spends most of her life thinking she's crazy. Its sad. I can actually relate to Jesse a lot.

Ahti may be the personification of the Oldest Hose or the source of the place of power... anyway I strongly believe he freed Jesse from the Hiss and helped her find the remnant of Polaris resonance (maybe even Polaris herself) inside her
For all the deep meaning and symbolism of this part of the game can I just say that I love how part of Jesse's nightmare scenario involves Emily having a boyfriend and not showing any interest in Jesse at all. Like girl just ask her out on a date already!
It's really awesome that you know so much about psychology!, i've been thinking about studying it too, also isnt Plato's cave also seen in the Psychonauts video with Lungfishopolis?
Yes I brought it up in Psychonauts in relation to Lungfishopolis. But you see this dynamic all throughout literature. Matrix is probably one of the most well known examples of it in film.
I always thought Jesse suddenly accepting her role as director was a little out of character, since there was no indication of her actually wanting the job before, but the hiss dream actually clears it up a little.
She had a sense of belonging. Once she saw that the people inside the oldest house had seen the things she saw, that caused her to feel alone in the world. She knew she was meant for it.
I agree. Jessie has two things going for her. A sense that she will fail people and needing a place to belong. She even mentions in international dialogue that, "...she doesn't know me. Doesn't know how I fail people." Just suggesting she should be in charge brings back memories of her perceived shortcomings. But the Bureau becomes a place for her to belong. Everyone outside the House thinks she is crazy and this place accepts her. One side of her is pulling her to stay whole the other is pushing back. The Hiss Dream puts this to the test and makes her choose to take care of the bureau and it's people. Helping to overcome her fear of failure.
I wonder if having some kind of mental disorder could potentially affect Hiss's ability to possess someone. Split personality, psychopath, etc. Could some people be immune/resilient because they think/are different?
Maybe if you had a mind that wouldn't accept any inconsistency, no matter how comfortable the dream. The kind of person who is obsessively honest, and insightful of their own motives. It would certainly increase your resistance.
And here is the conversations I was hoping this video would prompt! I've recently become very curious of how this dream would present in other people other than Jesse. But also how would the individual behave after the HRAs turned back on? Depending on what they saw I'd imagine some lingering psychological effects.
Interesting. Have you watched the Games As Literature analysis of Alan Wake? His interpretation of that games "Darkness" and what it did to people seems to have some parallels to the Hiss. Fitting, considering the events of the A.W.E. DLC.
The biggest question that I have (which probably doesn't even matter in the end), is why/did Trench kill him self? Did the Hiss decide they were done with him? Was he fired by the board , if so why not sooner ? I don't think Jesse killed him, like some of the dream sequences show. Super glad i found this channel, love control and Remedy. Subbed
@@GamingUniversityUoG Just finished the Foundation DLC, and based on that story I am leaning a bit towards that too. I hope they return to the control story some time after they finish AW2 and the Max pain remakes. One thing I don’t understand is that jesse fear is being director shouldn’t the hiss nightmare be her becaming the director and bureau agents turning against her leadership rather than being a bottom employer which she find very convenient
That's the point. If she finds being the bottom employer as being convenient she is incentivised to remain with what is comfortable. The trap is by giving her the excuse to stay the office worker. It is harder to rise to the position of director.
I am sure you noticed that POTF dropped their new album Ghostlights. In the last song of the album, I see connections to Alan Wake, maybe I just want to see them... Would be great to hear your thoughts. Revelations is my favourite so far! Greetings from Germany!
Slightly unrelated, but I’d love for you to do a Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe theory video. I don’t want to spoil anything major, but there’s a certain ‘bucket’ that absolutely could be explained as an Object of Power and could re-contextualize the entire game as being one massive Altered World Event.
Imagine an intern who did their job like Jessie, running around at top velocity, flailing their arms randomly but still getting their assigned task done.
Lmao now we just need her rushing around screaming randomly. I swear the workers should be too scared to tell her to hurry it up
