Sonic Origins is about to come out, so I decided to talk about SEGA and the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog in the early 90s.

Despite of Sonic’s rocky history after Adventure 2, Sonic still continues to show that he can never truly be stopped.

This shows how much passion and ambition they had when first creating sonic, it baffles me how little effort they seem to put into sonic games now a-days.

The Mr.Needlemouse thing is actually a mistranslation due to the Japanese word for hedgehog being needle and mouse when separated. Funnily enough it was made public when Yuji Naka saw this piece of trivia on a sega themed quiz and said he had never heard of Mr.Needlemouse, as sonics real proto name was simply Mr.Hedgehog. Otherwise really great video keep it up !

This made me have a new found of respect for Sega and Sonic Team, they gave other companies the confidence they needed for their own gaming marketing.
While Nintendo and Mario have saved the gaming industry, Sonic I feel was the one who opened the doors for everyone else to share a bit of spotlight.
That gaming didn't just belong to Mario, but *everyone.*
I absolutely love this story, i love the way Sega back then tried so hard to get themselves recognized with every game, and Sonic was just the one for them, they didnt do anything shady, immortal, they just showed themselves off to the public proudly and got what they deserved.
SEGA had it all in the bag in the 90s. Created the perfect character to rival Mario and executed advertising him PERFECTLY. It’s just too bad them continuously rushing out games only took them downhill. :(
Sonic might be fast, doesn’t mean his devs should be trying to match his speed when creating his games

I love Sonic and I always will. And this video made me realize a statement that was said: Sonic helped achieve a good future for the industry. The fact that Sonic 1 became a universally acclaimed gem and broke the gold streak that the NES and the new SNES had was crazy. Sonic also helped to inspire the PlayStations and later on the Xboxes. Plus, Sonic is the reason we have animal protagonists in gaming today. Crash, Spyro, Sly, Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Kao and many more were all created thanks to this blue hedgehog.
Say what you will about Sonic after 2002, but you gotta admit that Sonic and Sega were the reason for future companies being able to get a hand in changing the gaming industry for the better
In America mostly, in Japan Sonic couldn't beat Mario hence why SEGA did stuff like Sonic CD to appeal to the Japanese market (but also failed)
Actually the rabbit idea was scrapped then reused in ristar, where he uses his arms to grab items
Similarly to the design of a man with the mustache wearing pyjamas who became the series iconic villan,the crocodile who was a part of Sonic's "band" eventually came back as vector and that "sonic band" formula came back within sonic underground,strange isint it

My man Sonic swept my heart at intense speeds when I had a Sega Genesis with 300+ games (some bootleg of Genesis with Sonic 1 built in, I got Sonic 2 in a separate cartridge with that game that featured Goofy from Mickey Mouse cartoons)
Shoutouts to the 18 year old who forgot about women because sonic was so cool.
I'm truly a huge, ENORMOUS fan of Sonic the Hedgehog since I played it for the first time. I wasn't born before Sonic's appearance so my first game was Sonic Generations, then Sonic Unleashed, then again Sonic 06 and Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing. He will forever be my idol, despite him not being real!!! Sometimes I even wish he really existed... Thank you SEGA and Sonic Team!!!

I enjoyed reading about how you became such a fan. My first experience with Sonic was playing the first two classic games downloaded on a mobile phone back in the mid 2000s, the first 3D Sonic game I played was Sonic Adventure. Sonic was one my comfort characters back in middle school alongside Mario.
@@briannawilson8845 I honestly don't even know myself how I became such a super duper big fan of this non-existing friendly creature. I just liked playing those games a lot, like Assassin's Creed (especially A.S. Brotherhood idk why), Ice Era, Kung Fu Panda, Spyro games... and then for some reason I had this feeling giving me pressure inside my heart because of all the excitement I had by playing these games and I started LOVING them, and now I'm going crazy for Sonic! I think when I was little I played the games (Spyro etc.) too much that they don't work very well. In my Sonic Generations disc, Silver chapter/act can't be played so I won't be able to get every Chaos Emeralds, but I still enjoy playing it.

@@Svngl1m I love Spyro and Assassin's Creed! I never really had a chance to really play Spyro growing up since we mainly had Nintendo systems and Spyro was on Playstation but I always thought he was cool. I preferred animal characters as a kid so I thought playing as a purple dragon would've been cooler than playing as a mustachioed man in overalls.
So in summary, without Sega genesis, we may never have gotten xbox or playstation

I remember back in the day when Sonic came out! This game was my jam! I played it in 1991 on a black and white tv! Really shows how old I am! My friends would come over to my house back then and we would all take turns playing an act in the first Sonic game. Those were the days when multiplayer video games just started to become popular!
I really hope that sonic can hit his stride again with the other three sonic projects that were getting this year.
I hope so too. 2022 seems to be a good year for Sonic right about now I'd say, especially considering the Sonic 2 movie, then Sonic Frontiers releasing later this year. I adored Sonic so much but since 2013 after Sonic Boom Sega hasn't been releasing any new projects that caught my interest. I hope Frontiers will be amazing.

Let's remember as well that in the 80s in Europe and Brazil, the Master System was popping. It wasn't as much as a success as the American NES but it was a moment, people in my own family are nostalgic for the old Alex Kidd games

Honestly is it just me or is sonics design better than mario. I mean sonic is a legitimate mutant sort of hedgehog who has nice sneakers actually while Mario is just an Italian plumber.

With how petty and self destructive SOJ was then, I actually really believe that's where the tension started. This wasn't just any ip, or hardware design/choice. It was redesigning the mascot they created.

The first sonic games I played were Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 in the Master System. From what I remember Sonic 2 was released on the Master System before the Mega Drive version in the U.K. 🇬🇧

Sega actually didn't make John Madden Football, EA did. But Sega DID make (or tried to make) Joe Montana Football, the first version was not ready for the holidays so Sega paid EA to make a worse version of Madden and stick the Joe Montana name on the box.
